    Facebook groups are also the way to go. I've focused mainly on prequels/prominent OT characters and the most I've had to pay for a fig over retail was $34 for Commander Cody last year. I just hope Hasbro continues to re-release/archive popular figs so everyone can get what they want

    My tip would be if there is a figure you really want pre-order it. I know it is fun to find in the wild but nothing worst then not finding the figure your heart was set on and having to pay ebay prices for it.

    • @Nerdzoic
      @Nerdzoic  4 года назад +11

      I’m getting to that point

    • @ryanbarker5217
      @ryanbarker5217 4 года назад +2

      lol, you pre-order it and months later after you see them on the peg at your local store you get it. that's assuming, too, your order isn't cancelled. i'm inbox, so any amazon exclusive makes me cringe. it's all moving online, though, and a huge reason while i'm getting out the game. my walmart doesn't even carry BS anymore, and the other stores can't even stock their own exclusives let alone new waves that just keep coming out amounting to 60-70 figures a year.
      be prepared to not even get it at pre-order given the competition between bots, scalpers, and other collectors. this is why staggering the pre-order times is something i expect will be common practice.

      In all fairness I've had a few steals on ebay from auctions - I got Endor Han and Endor Luke for £14.00 each - but definitely see a lot of those ebay prices you mention!

    I don’t really have a said “focus” because I love all of Star Wars, but as a relatively new collector I made a list of the figures I need and ones that I’m just keeping an eye on. I also split them up based on if they are older or available for pre order/just coming out. I think it’s also important to list which figures you have pre ordered and when they are expected to arrive in order to budget.

    A big key for me, especially since I don’t have a lot of space: Only collect what you love. Don’t buy it just to have it. That’s saved me lots of money and headache.

    Having a focus is a really good tip. For ANY toyline. It saves you both space any money. Because like you said, unless you have unlimited funds and space, it's next-to-impossible to be a completionist.
    When it comes to the Black Series, I only collect movie and video game characters. I don't do any characters from novels/comics or animated series', since I haven't dabbled into that side of Star Wars and therefore have no attachment to anything from it. And even then, I tend to get the movie and video game characters I actually have an attachment to and feel are essential to a Star Wars collection. I'll skip out on a lot of background characters that only appear on-screen for a few seconds and don't really matter to the lore, as well as main or supporting characters that I don't really care for. I didn't get most of the Rogue One or Solo figures since I found those movies to be underwhelming...and have no attachment to those characters or those versions of the OG characters.

    Matt, your top 5 is spot on!! Making #1 talk to your spouse is essential to successful collecting. Not many “Top 5 collecting” videos in the community touch on this!! I can only remember justice Curry always always always stress this & stress budgeting for your collecting.
    #3- find your focus- I literally just went through my collection & thinned it out. As a collector some figures don’t give me the “fizz” as much as others do.. Toy Galaxy hits on this too & it’s so true. Your interests & focuses change..
    great video & awesome channel! Just found you & have already enjoyed majority of your videos! Keep it up!

    My Black Series collection is a bit on the small side at the moment, but I already have my “focus”. I’m a sucker for Clone Wars, Rebels, and the OT characters so that’s what I mostly collect. Thanks to you and other collectors, I’ve learned that one of the smartest things to do with a character you really want is to pre-order them. However, I do already try to limit myself with any figures over $30 since most of the time, Hasbro will re-release those figures in the future and I can get them at retail price. For instance, I never got to buy the original Wolffe when he first came out and he skyrocketed in price. I wasn’t about to spend $80+ on him so I decided to bide my time and see if he’d get re-released, then woe and behold, he got re-released on BBTS for his regular retail price.

    You hit it right on the nail with having a focus. This can be tough with any toy line as there is so much out there and it can be really if you’re just getting into collecting and feel that added pressure to play catch up to everyone else.
    I like the tip about asking your spouse. My wife was all for me in this when I started collecting again. Now, she can get pretty upset when she see’s a package from eBay or Amazon show up. 😂

    My tip is to always be patient and buy what you like. My strategy: if I miss a figure, I don't pay resale for it, I just wait for another wave or archive release. But if it's a figure that I don't really like but still want to complete the numbered series, I get it on an aforementioned Amazon deal. Were those first edition figures cool? Yeah I guess but I didn't feel like I needed them and just got the regular issue ones.

    • @itsthemumu8585
      @itsthemumu8585 4 года назад

      I’m kind of in-between on that tip #3.
      I will more often get figures from my favorite 3 films (ROTJ, ESB, and ROTS in that order), but I generally just stick to the main characters, and maybe an extra background character if the figure is really well done. So personally I’m totally looking forward to ROTJ’s 40th anniversary in 3 years as I’ll be having a hayday (and my wallet is probably gonna take a few hits)

    I’m not sure if I’ll be collecting or not, this month I decided to outright buy the 6 bounty hunters from empire as they’re my favorite characters from Star Wars. It came with a price, Dengar was insanely expensive, this is a hobby that could get very pricy which is making me want to maybe just stick with the bounty hunters

  • @scotthintze5901
    @scotthintze5901 4 года назад +1

    Nice tips. When I go to conventions, I always ask the dealer to make me an offer or try to bundle at one price. Sometimes they will/won't but it depends on the dealers. Also, try estate/garage sales and who knows, you might buy both loose and carded figures. When I shop on Amazon, I check on the prices and discounts. When ordering, try to get at least a few figures so you get a box instead of the envelope type package. Thats what causes you carded figures to get damaged. And thanks for the Action Figure 411. I will use this for checking prices. As far as collecting Star Wars, I will stay with the VTC and Black Series.

    Great video and excellent points: for me #3 is CRUCIAL!!! I only collect the original trilogy Black Series 6" and I collect them for nostalgic purposes only, never as an investment - that's what my equities and real estate portfolios are for. That's probably because I was 6 when Star Wars ANH came out and those three movies were such an integral part of my childhood. I also pick up a few characters I like along the way, but don't consider them part of my collection - rather just fun pieces. For example, I did pick up all the characters from Rebels and a few from the AOTC and it's animated version CW, just cos they're DOPE. I mean who doesn't like Mace, Dooku and Obi-wan, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, any of the clone commanders and a young, pissed off Anakin? And a few others here and there, mostly droids, cos I like dem droids, too!

    This helps it good advice I just started collecting at the end of December 2023 and I am obsessed staying focused on a certain series or movie slash show is what I gained from this video and it makes sense I'm going to start by collecting the book of Boba fett and go from there just starting I got 10 so far of the characters I am fond of the most . But after viewing this vid since I have most of the book of Boba fett I might as well complete that and go from there . What is difficult for me I want to collect enough to make a Battle Diorama but don't want to take any of the figures out of the box

    i will add have an exit strategy.
    as i'm going to try to sell my BS collection soon, i went to actionfigure411 and came up with $4493.48. i'll ask $3500, throw in a lot of doubles to help offset some price differences in the real world, and if someone picks up locally i'll throw an unopened radio flyer landspeeder into the mix. the point is i'll be thrilled to sell it at a thousand bucks below the 'list' price because when someone buys a collection they expect a good deal. if you part it out you'll get a better price, but you'll also be stuck with a lot of junk you'll wind up practically giving away, plus parting out definitely takes a lot of time and hassle, so that extra money you get back you will have to earn. (i'm an inbox collector.)
    i'll ask $250 for S&H, if it's less than that i'll refund the rest, if more i'll eat the cost. be paypal ready and expect to pay the 'goods and services' fee -- *never* use 'friends and family' unless you want to be scammed. i'll meet someone somewhere as long as it's only 2 or three hours away for me, and that will obviously take off the shipping cost, but only $200 as i try to mitigate my travel expenses for a potentially 4-6 hour round trip.
    first i'll offer the collection on the FB collector groups i'm in (if you collect you should belong to many), offering shipping to the lower CONUS (the continental united states minus alaska and hawaii). i suspect that won't go anywhere, so i'll wind up putting it on feebay.
    at some point most people will dump their collections for whatever reason. that time for me has arrived. don't think it won't for you, too, just in case. my plan is reasonable, and remember that when you collect that you usually lose money barring a focus on more the 'holy grails' which tend to keep their value if nothing else. then again, collectibles often have the bottom fall out, so don't for one second consider it an investment.
    when i started i built a collection quickly because i bought in lots and got good deals. then i paid what was a very fair price from collectors and flea market vendors. i bought a lot at retail places, sometimes at a discount, so i'm not really 'losing' a thousand bucks, but i'm probably breaking about even, and that's all i can hope for.

    One topic about investment collecting often overlooked and never mentioned. Figures purchased at or below retail will typically maintain their value. It's like money in the bank. Should the need arise that you need to sell off items, rarely will you lose money.

    In my case I’m just focusing on the main characters of each trilogy. Say the sequels: Rey, Poe, BB8, Finn, Kylo & (maybe) Snoke, that’s it. I don’t need 20 stormtroopers, 50 phase 1 clones or the entire Jedi Council from the Prequels. Just the main cast & that’s it.

    Hey big nerdy, love your videos! I have a video idea for you that can help out new collectors like me! Similar to this one! There is a lot of new terminology like "die-cast" and 1/6th scale that I don't understand. Does 1/6th scale just mean it is one sixth the size of the actual person? Maybe I could find all of this out with a simple Google search, but I would enjoy seeing a video of you explaining exactly what new terminology a new collector might come across and what they mean. Thanks again! Stay nerdy!

    • @anakinsolo4529
      @anakinsolo4529 4 года назад +2

      The scale is 6’. So 1/6 is 12”, 1/12 is 6” etc. die cast is just that a die cast figure.

    I would add 2 more tips 1. Look out out for figure switch outs. You see a figure that is one you think you want and then you see that the figure in the box is not the figure advertised on the box. Somebody bought the figure and switched if for another and returned it and got a refund. Basically stealing it. bring it to the attention of the store manager ASAP 2. When asking about certain figures, at stores like Target or Walmart(I would say avoid Walmart) most of the time, the employees don't know shit about the actual products and many figures in a particular genre will share the same scanning number so their scanner might say they have 5 Anakin's but it might be only one figure or other figures of that wave. There are many more tips I think you could include, maybe do tips 6-10 in another video

      @@Nerdzoic It's really about the people in customer service. not being diligent and looking at the product closely. If they would take the time and look closely , it doesn't take a college degree to see the figure is different from the picture on the box. They just scan it and toss it in a basket.

    A Re-release won't keep the original figure's price down for a long time, the Archive Anakin is heading for the hundreds while the OG release is back in the hundreds range. Same with Boba Fett, That 40th re-release will just hike up in price inevitably. If I see it I'm getting it then and there, unless I left my wallet at home then well sh*t.
