Re: Coke Studio being the 'greatest export' from the subcontinent, what's the basis for the comment? Is it anecdotal or based on some information? Also don't you think that it's important to note that there was already a precedent. Estúdio Coke Cola in Brazil? Albeit only two seasons. 2007-8. ❤
Coke studio was never about original songs, but live performances and fusion with western music to revive old music history. And since xulfi the whole essence of coke studio has changed. We want rohail hayyat back. Period!
@@MusicofKarakoram No, in Season 14 we see new Genre and fully experimental where Old which is Produced by Rohail Hayat he was stuck in Old Nostalgia ...where season 14 is totally different more detail and quality

Excuse the long essay but Really enjoyed this conversation. well to the point of cross border music labels coming in, you are right it is signing the deal with the devil because its very very likely that in order to cater to the bigger market local musicians will end up losing their local organic Pakistani identity. This is something not unique to our region I have seen a some of the big names in kpop do exactly this to cater to the much bigger western market the lose the k of kpop they make money but they lose their identity. Also what irks me about cross border labels is they take a hit Pakistani song and repackage it and relabel it as 'global or south asian' . its just like them selling salt mines pink salt as Himalayan salt. We don't have many things that youth owns as a part of their identity other than music, kind of reminds me of how on a international grad college campus we had an atif song and this idian guy suddenly said to his forigen friend you know hes an Indian singer and the three of us friendly collectively went excuse me he is from Pakistan to them because no one is taking our adat and atif away from us lol. I feel I would still have this sentiment for noorie, aaroh, mizrab, najam shiraz, karakurum, ali azmat, junoon, and artist whose songs I hold dear . Although we have similarities you can tell Pakistani music has its own identity and they strip it of its identity in the long run it benefits them out local aspiring artist in the long run especially when you consider they copy right issues. For the point of toady's musician not having much to say I feel like while you do see a lot of opinions on social media spaces but if you look at the society as a whole there is regression and lack of freedom in being able to have an opinion or maybe its a generational thing and we are officially in the hamary zamany main ganay achay thay lol . I dont know but the lack of things to say in songs seems to be issue in worldwide main stream music but in indie space you do find good lyrics I dont think we have such a things even in indie space . Interestingly for me I do find kpop song writers especially rapper even with the confines of their strict state policy are able to express in their writing but this applies to their writers , film makers too. AT time I feel like at end of the say there is a huge lack of will to be creative in our songs, drama its all about How much do I put in to get X payment and this is what gets you junk food not a fine cuisine Also I dont think everyone associates nostalgia by place to local music, for me sab bhula kay by call, hum bholay by noorie , teri perchiyan by ali azmat or ayo wahan chlay were not about childhood memory but what songs that were a source of comfort just like linkin park was.
Thoroughly enjoyed your reflections! Sound thoughts and beautiful articulation! Please seriously think about writing articles in print or on digital media, if you already aren't, that is
With all its inclusive approach, Coke Studio, or Rohail Hayat, failed to look beyond the conventional understanding of the various cultural and ethnic communities which are a part of the wider Pakistani society. Majority of our population thinks that there are only 4 cultural groups in Pakistan: Sindhi, Punjabi, Baloch, Pukhtoon. This understanding is based upon the notion that each of the geographical unit in Pakistan represents a single culture and language. Did we ever see any Gujrati, Kuthci, Kathiawari, Barahwi, Hindkoh, Shina, Khuwar, Potohari, Kashmiri, Wakhi, Hyderabadi, or even the rich Ganga-Jamni cultural songs in any of the seasons of Coke Studio? An occasional one here and there, yes, but not as a permanent fixture. There's even a considerable number of Dari and Persian speaking people living, especially in Karachi. 99.99% of Pakistanis have an extremely monolithic understanding of Pakistan and its cultural diversity. Platforms such as Coke Studio can do a lot in educating our wider population regarding this rich diversity within the socio-cultural fabric of our country.
