It was July 9th, 1961. Soviet air force day.
Spectators were in awe as a completely new supersonic bomber flew over the crowd escorted by 2 MiG-21s. Sleek design powered by 4 engines with the maximum speed of up Mach 2 was a sight to see.
It was the first time the new aircraft was presented to the public, but western military analysts had been debating for years about how the Soviets managed to create the next generation, nuclear-powered ,bomber.
But, the story behind the bureau and new aircraft project was a lot more complex than what was shown on the surface.
This is the story of ambition, ingenuity and politics, but most of all the story of one of the best-looking aircraft ever made.
The Myasishchev M-50 Bounder.
Imagine this converted into a supersonic airliner. The windows would be under the wings and offer amazing perspectives.
Did this plane ever achieve supersonic flight?
@@winternow2242 Yea but they had to empty it and and make it as lightweight as possible
And they reached supersonic barely and that pissed off soviet authorities so they decided to keep building those tu95s
good luck on those gas chugging engines though
You know what's even more amazing? Vodka
This plane looks like someone attached 4 jet engines on a dart. Looks cool tho
It was from that cool era of aircraft design when planes looked like the sleek chrome hood ornaments on American cars. One of the plastic model kit companies issued a kit of the M-50 and labeled it as the Russian atomic powered bomber.
Ngl, the B-58 is a much prettier plane
Good one :)
@@roanferguson8873 imo its look like a mess
More like a mig 21 on steroids
I always thought the Bounder was a great looking aircraft, love seeing it in the old footage and those graphics are top notch.
Dunno' man, I personally think XB-70 Valkyrie to be the most beautiful plane ever made...
I agree
@@starwarsgeek8960 I mean, just that Valkyrie's wide thicc ass look mmmmm-MMMMM!
I think the Concorde deserves that title
@@kommandantgalileo lol what. The Concorde is pretty cool but the xb70 is way better looking.
Absolutely right
this looked like a MIG 21 with high wings and a LOT of vodka, Stalinium, and from the looks of it someone can squat dance in there
Again such a nice video. Keep this quality up 👍👌
I’m fascinated with this particular aircraft. Thank you for the video.
with?
Recall seeing a show on TV where they used this modified bomber to carry large payloads. You were correct, the jet engines during Soviet times were behind their American counterparts. Even the TU-144 did not have the turbojets required for SST flight when it took its 1st flight.
Due to Soviet secrecy, there was some confusion in the west about different models. While this plane was long thought to be a record holder, it was later learned that it was the M-4 Bison subsonic bomber that set the payload records attributed to to the M-50.
@@mikearmstrong8483yep, the m4 was the original parts carrier for the shuttle.
Fun fact: when B-29 was copied to Soviet T-4, within onlčytwo Years in late 40s , Soviets were using their motors, superior to USA original.
@@ljubastojanovic608 The 18-cylinder ASh-73? Funny you mention it, it is a twinning of the 9-cylinder M-25, which itself was an American engine in origin - a license build of the Wright R-1820 Cyclone, and while its not a direct copy of the B-29's Duplex-Cyclone, the two engines were highly interchangeable because they had the same "lineage"
@@niggalini Thank You for details I didnt know about, for me as mech. engineer the sole fact that Soviets had the motor suitable for B29 not having at the same time any pla of the B29 range was surprising. Copying B29 was immense job, comprising new materials, technologies and production tools, at the same time they were spared for motor development, which could be critical. It is also good tho know that Soviests were buying USA or Britain licencies before and even after WW2; eg. famous Moskwich first model in 30s, and Pobeda and Volga 1 cars ain 40s and 50s were all of the USA origin.
Awesome video, I love this channel! Please give us a video on what you think future wars will look like.
Race to bankrupt the other... but it gave us awesome engineering achievements on both sides, and awesome aircraft
That transition to the ad segment was brilliant! The soviet airshow fans approve! 😁
Thank you! Great video about great plane!
Great video. Thanks.
Best in-video ad approach I've seen yet. Made me laugh.
I'm proud to say that when this Channel was still growing. I was already here. ♥
Enjoying video about super sonic USSR bomber. Video clearly explained its superior characteristics in its time,,also video clearly explained its creation in side political backgrounds of USSR & its competition against US of this bomber..thanks ( Found & explained) channel for sharing this video about ( Myasishchev M - 50 Bounder )
*To everyone who flips through the comments, health to you and your loved ones.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️*
I'd personally say the original Avro Vulcan was the best looking plane ever made.

My vote goes to Su-35.
I prefer the Handley Page Victor.
Su57
Funny thing is….. not once did the owner of this thread end with “ what do you guys think?” So it amazing how many people throw unwanted opinions, like the guy that put XB-70, so fucken what no one asked, keep them Opinions in the common thread and not in the replies
Thank you for this nice video. The M-50 is an impressive aircraft who is it worth to visit it in the Museum near Moscow., just next to the Sukhoi T-4 . Btw. I think the man at the end of the video is ot Mr. Tupolev, i think it is Mr. Yakovlev
@@RocketBoxx are you stupid ? Why should unique aircraft in a Museum be destroyed? We should learn from the past, also in a Aviation topics. And Museums are a place to See the past with our own eyes.

Mustard made a video on the XB-70, and I saw in the comments that you had uploaded this.
Somehow my notifications got turned off! Anyways, nice to learn about the M-50!
Lmao I came here just exact timing as he ends the video 🥲🥲 I LOVE THE CONTENT! ✨⭐️✨
Looks like something from the Thunderbirds!! Personally the B-58 is the most beautiful, followed by the B-47. The 58 wasvjust dead sexy, and the 47 was very elegant in the air.
The B-58A, like the F-104 series aircraft, looked like they were going Mach 2 sitting on the ground! I never saw an actual B-58 fly, but I saw plenty of F-104s while I was stationed at Nellis AFB, Nevada from 1976 to 1977. Their performance in the air matched what you'd expect seeing them parked on the ramp!
Yeah, I'm too young to have seen them either.(49 years old)but my dad talks about the B -58s flying over Missouri when he was a kid. One of the pilot's was from the middle of Missouri somewhere, and they would route their cross country supersonic flights through/over north western and down through the central portions of Missouri. He said the Sonic books would shake the whole house! When I was a kid in the early eighties, we lived north east of Whitman Air Force Base towards KC MO and we were on the flight path of the B-52s headed up towards the aluminum umbrella airborne holding areas. Used to year/feel flights of B-52s flying over all the time!
I used to have a 1/48 scale model of a B-58...it was massive and looked amazing. I was a stupid kid and didn't do the best job putting it together and the paint job left a lot to be desired but the thing looked cool. Had it on a shelf above my 1/48 scale SR-71 (which was also massive). I think my brother was baby-sitting the neighbors kids and one of them broke both models and I was really sad about that at the time. I didn't really have space for those things so its probably for the best.
@@tomcline5631 Sounds like you're describing the Jefferson City area and onward toward Whitman AFB.
Chất lượng, Sỹ Luân chắc thích bản Cover này lắm này! Chúc mừng em cùng toàn thể Ekip F. Studio
Actually, the best looking plane is Concorde.
Luv the Bounder , it's big looks the part , but it was bloody hopeless it was a flying " Tin Man "..but still has great lines and looks , great Graphics an vid as always from Mr Handsome Voice.
3:37. I love this channel
The transition killed me😂😂
6:47 Neat trick with the nosecone 🤔
Your sooo good at this! Wings Discovery Channel is back only way better! Thank you!
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Love the engines right on the wing tips . . . The design looks like what a young schoolboy would have on a poster on his bedroom wall.
Reasembling the B-58 hustler. I think they took inspiration from it just modified by expanding the airframe
yeah, not really
Er...that would be the SR-71. And I will die on that hill!
And I'm sure that the 'Bounder' had an issue with area rule-so it was a lot slower than expected
first time im hearing someone call the SR-71 beautiful/good looking
@Karthick Ashwath
First time for everything
@@oadka I will second oxcart - and whoever designed the plane for the x men movies obviously thought so too
Sr71 and f117 are the coolest imo too.
@@jc.1191 I agree with you random stranger f117 is nice looking
What's with the missile closing tip at 6:46?
I don't recall seeing this one in Wing of the Red Star on Wings, in the early '90s.
Could you do a video on the MiG-21, I saw them in the side of this vid and thought that would be cool
I personally think the Soviets and now the Russians make the most beautiful planes of all, so many different types, roles, variations. Got to hand them that.
Top 3 of the most beautiful planes ever built (in no particular order): B-70, SR-71 and Concorde.
Yeah the SR-71 definitely belongs in that list. It's beautiful.

@ChannelZero ive never heard anyone say the concord is ugly
@ChannelZero Is the because you misses is looking over your shoulder and making you type that and she is Shreks Ex?
Your stuff is getting better and better.. even the cgi. You are starting to give Mustard's channel a run for the money!! lol
Thank you for the kind words. Considering I make 1 video a week with this animation, imagine what I could do with 2+ months like another channel
They could hear the TU-95 when it was still on the drawing board.
All these "sexy" bombers and attack-aircraft (like the A5 Vigilante) . . . . yet the Tu95 and B52 fly on and on.
PS. would be even funnier if "this bomber was brought to you by Squarespace"
many people will buy some of old famouse car rather than modern, but they are not in the market. All of this classic cars, from VW Beetle, Mini Cooper or Fiat 600 were more good looking and cheaper than modern version. Same goes for Rolls or Mercedes cars, many American classics, English an Italian sport cars. You dont need 300, 400 or more PS for car tp drive, You dont need most of this electronics or assists, this is only market race producing driving idiots.
this looks like a spaceship from a 1950's science-fiction film

the fact that a russian/ukrainian says that makes enough sense.
@@Bottledairsniffer247 I'm Russian and yes, personally, the/le Concorde is the most aesthetically developed and noble aircraft ever built. Imo Concordski is a bit more rough, like Mercedes 190 compared to Nissan R34
This plane is actually Mustard's channel art .
mustard also buys the models
The BESTEST looking plane in the World ever is the North American XB-70 Valkyrie.
For the Soviets/Russian is the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker - although I have a deep aesthetical appreciation for the MiG-17 Fresco and the Tupolev Tu-95 Bear.
-- The "North American XB-Valkyrie" does not compare to many of these
"Successful prototypes".
-- It does not even compare to today's regular commercial planes !
can you make a video on Kyushu J7W1 Shinden? i think it would be a cool plane to cover
Your modeling skills are improving. Mustard better watch out.
As a YF-23 fan, these are fighting words
Just a small comment : it's a Soviet bomber... Not a Russian bomber
Remember Arnie in Red Heat?
- So, are you Russian?
- SOVIET!
Russians called the shots in the USSR, sowing the seeds for troubles that last until the present day.
@@DrWhom
Nope.
Stalin was Georgian (in fact Ossetian), half of Politburo were Ukrainians, Belarusians not to mention Jews.
It's hard to understand for people outside post-Soviet block, that communists were building supranational country not just by declaration (like 'melting pot'), but in real life.
@@P1x3lMagic how do you know he was Ossetian?
The Soviet Union was basically Russia + a bunch of puppet states, and those puppet states was mostly ignored when it comes to advanced military development such as this so it was for all tense and purposes as much russian as it is Soviet.
In my opinion the B-2 spirit is the coolest and most beautiful aircraft ever built, but I totally see and respect your viewpoint!
I respect their opinion too, but they are still wrong... lol
@@thebluegrassgenealogist1300 nah the B-2 is cool af
No I meant the people that made the video are wrong to say the M-50 is the best looking aircraft.... lol although I respect their opinion. Yes the B-2 is a far better looking aircraft.
@@thebluegrassgenealogist1300 oh I see
@@thebluegrassgenealogist1300 read it wrong and fast
The engine placement reminds me of the B-58 Hustler
My first impression of the M-50 was "This was the Soviet imitation of the Hustler." Except that the Hustler actually went into production and service. By the time I served with the 43 BMW, the B-58s had come and gone, the wing had moved to Andersen AFB, Guam, and the B-58s had been replaced with B-52Gs.
4:34 That's the assembly of the wing from the Tu-144 Prototype.
The might F-111 Pig was my favourite in RAAF service. The Mirage 111O was the most sexy looking one.
Cool graphics 👍✈️
Concorde is the most beautiful airplane of all time. One of the best performing too. Nothing else ever built could supercruise at Mach 2 but Concorde could for hours
that was the nastiest transition to sponsored content i have ever witnessed
Thank you!
She is an absolute beauty. I can say she's at the same position as the XB-70
yes yes. triangle tube is definitely the best looking.
I don't think I'll ever stop being astounded at what Soviet scientists and engineers accomplished under the privation and scrutiny of that era.
with a budget allocated for a fraction of office supplies in west.
All of this from a country that didn't order their first toilet paper plant till 1968.

Kinda weird that Mustard suddenly made a video on the M-50 for Nebula less than a week after this :D
You do realize that creating a video like that took a longer time than a week, don't you?
@@fauzin3338 not only make a video, but do the full modelling and animating ontop, yea that does take more than 6 days lol
actually no, that was a logical follow up to his Valkyrie vid
The most beautiful airplane ever is actually the XF-85 Goblin, and no, I shall not be answering further questions.
My question would be if you gave birth to it.
@@DrWhom I see where you're going with that, but I counter by pointing out that: certain faces, even a mother can't love.
Check out the Farman Jabiru. The version with 3 radials. I have a hunch you might like it!
@@alaingadbois2276 You would be correct! What I find hilarious is that the two engine version is somehow so elegant, and yet the three engine is so ugly.
Often held up as an object lesson in how NOT to build a supersonic bomber.
The soviet Hustler
You should do one about the T-42 Super heavy tank much like the P 1000 ratte The T 42 super heavy tank would be a land ship you should do a video about this
Beautiful Plane , but , you can make a video about the supersonic Mach 3 Bomber Sukhoi T - 4 Sotka, ?.

May be a bit of a bounder, but wasn't much of a blinder.
Vulcan, Victor, Hustler, Bounder, Concorde, Mirage 2000, A-340 airliner, T-38/F-5/F-20 most beautiful jet aircraft.

Ohhh cool. Looks like a hustler + project suntan.
That engine setup is basically what happens if your jet in KSP needs more power
true my plane went Mach 3.9 when before it was more like Mach 2
The retro-futuristic XB-70 Valkyrie and the sleek SR-71 Blackbird looks way cooler imo but it’s all a matter of taste of course.
you say retro... if SSTO orbital airplanes ever come into existence, we can expect that sort of design vibe
Why is it so stronk?
* S T A L I N I U M*
The Supermarine Spitfire comes in a distant second to the Blackbird in terms of pure artwork.
Tupolev TU-160 is the best looking plane.
What about the TU-22M3?
Here's my list of most beautiful planes, by era: WW1 - Nieuport. WW2 - Spitfire and Mosquito (tie). Korea - F-86. Vietnam (era) - F-104. Overall - SR-71. Honorable mention - B-58.
Impressive. Very based. Though I'd say the F-5 or F-14 are more aesthetically pleasing for the Vietnam slot. Also I just personally like the Bf 109 F or G for ww2. That's more or less my opinion though. The spitfire is a work of art
Ah F104, the Widowmaker…
Hi can you make a video about Japanese type4 30cm mobile mortar or the ushakov lpl, the WW2 Soviet flying submarine
im more of a me262 man myself but this is nice too
Soviet aircraft design up until the collapse always to me recalled what the German Luftwaffe would have come up with had the War not ended in 1945.
A distinctly European/old school style of highly advanced technology, if you will..
i saw that plane on mustards( youtuber that does vids like this ) home page (maybe a future video)
How is "range" defined? One way 12k or does it contain the way back as well, so 6k in and 6k out?
I would say it's the first one, but I'm not 100% sure.
Range means the total distance that it can fly
If the range is 10,000 miles, it means it can fly 5,000 miles there and 5,000 miles back.
The radius is how far it can fly before it has to return to base without running out of fuel, so in this same case, an aircraft with a range of 10,000 miles has a combat radius of 5,000 miles.
I failed Maths at school but I think that I got this one right.
@@Hattonbank Thought so. Thanks for clearing it up!
@@Hattonbank depends on how much time you want the vehicle to spend in the theatre, but for a bomber the answer is as little time as possible

Just wondering whether this designs would be useful in today's scenario considering today's technology & for low risk missions???
I saw this plane in real life and it is very impressive albeit very rusty and dirty
What is the difference between nuclear bomb delivery fighter aircraft and normal fighter aircraft. Can you explain this 🤔
I'd have to say The Crimson Haybaler was tops.
Kinda looks like the hustler. What a coincidence. :D
With all my respect ...but the sr71 blackbird is the most epic ...most futuristic aircraft ever !!
I do wish M50 plane can phase the prototype and become Soviet supersonic bomber-
Oh wait, Tu-160 exist! Well, no wonder I don't see that comment yet
You should hire a modder for war thunder to create custom planes for the game for your patreons.
The plastic model company Aurora made a kit of this plane in 1959 and 1960 called the "Russian Nuclear Powered Bomber".
Riiiiight.
There were lots of other issues with this design, for instance, it didn't respect the area rule at all
Looks like they tried to copy the B-58 Hustler bomber, but on a bigger scale.
And just like the B-58, it had a lot of problems.
