Great series!
Nice to see Mrs O and Hanna.
Your Vibe customer is lucky to have you as their mechanic. You saved them a lot of money by saving them from a new car purchase.
Another job well done.....Now ship it!
+FordTechMakuloco YEs sir, job is done and flushed!
+FordTechMakuloco He I see on FB you had your helper out cleaning that floor. Looks like some nice weather you were having!
Love your Vids, used the one on the Rav to assist a Head Gasket/time sert repair on 09 vibe 2.4. Like you I am normally on my own.I have a little 600 lbs 600 lbs. Chain Fall of My engine Hoist hook. Does a great job. Thanks Eric
That was a really great series, thanks Eric. It was interesting to watch the process from start to finish without any "here's one we prepared earlier" edits. You showed us everything, which was informative and interesting. Great job Eric.
+Mathew Wood Nah we just show the real deal. Good and bad...
Don’t ya love when they go in and start like they were meant to be there, no surprises? Good as gold.
Woot! Another job well done, and a happy Toyotiac Vibrix back on the road~
+rhkips Toyotiac Vibrix hahah
What a great engine swap series!! I really enjoyed it.
Another great fix, you never could have got it done without Mrs.O .
Great work and video series! Thanks for bringing us along on this one.
That little tip about how to bolt the torque converter to the flywheel will probably save me an hour of my time one day. Tips borne from prior frustration are the ones we all watch for. As much as these are long videos I almost always learn something i didn't know, it is time well spent.
Sir....
I just finished watching your video series with the junk yard engine swap on for the Pontiac Vibe.
I stumbled across this during a RUclips search for an engine swap for a 2003 Matrix RX. I’m very glad I came across your video series. Now I know what’s entailed. You made everything seem to easy.... I know it can be if a person is mechanically inclined like myself.
I’m currently stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan 🇦🇫 on a NATO base. 4th and FINAL deployment. (Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and again Afghanistan). My team and I are on a Personal Security Detail for a 4Star General (General John Nicholson) in charge of Afghanistan Operations.
When I’m away on deployment on my down time I think about my car and what I’m going to do to it when I get home. Currently, I left my car to my son to use while I’m away 🤞🏼hoping to be able to return to it in one piece.
Anyway.... great video series. I live in Queens NY.
I’ll be back from mission in November. Planning on POSSIBLY getting a remanufactured engine from a reputable company.
Question? Would you be interested in doing my engine swap Sir? Because after watching you in action, I know my car would be in good hands👍🏼😎🇺🇸.
Not sure when/if you’ll actually get around to reading this video. But if you do.... let me know. I’ll try to find a way to message you and let you know this message is here. You mentioned in you video at the end you have other social media options that I can use to get a hold of you.
Well thank YOU for your service!!! HOOAH.
I would love to do the swap for you when you return! Just call the shop to set up an appointment when you are ready.
South Main Auto Repair
Hey Sir,
I didn’t realize you had replied to my message. Thank you for responding. I’ll definitely call the shop when I’m ready. Coincidentally I saw the “JASPER” banner on the garage wall. Before I even saw your video or knew anything about SMA, I was reading up on Jasper Engines. So I guess I found the Engine company and my mechanic for the job👍🏼🇺🇸
Current time right now in Kabul 0240HRS/New York 1810HRS. I just finished watching two of your videos, last one you fixed air gap on compressor for a Honda or Toyota. Simple fix.
I’m going to send you some pics and vids from over here. Best social media rout to do so Erick??
SSG Christopher Schemer
It's the Covid time here and I wish I was busy like you. I also wish I was there to see even the jobs you do off camera.
My 71 Olds 98 had an engine swap and they did the least work they needed to do. Crooked hood, missing bolt from the motor mount bracket to the block, no nut on long bolt through that mount. Loose intake bolts, you get the picture. I was upset to say the least.
Thanks for taking the time to share these videos with us, must add a fair bit of time to the job.
G'day Eric thanks for that mate, it was great to watch John
I work for a tier 2 Toyota company and we cast and assemble most of the parts in the engine and transmission.. Itt is great to see those parts work well even in other then Toyota cars and trucks!! Great job on that engine change!!
Top rated series Mr O..!
Very nice series of videos on the little engine swap. And nice seeing Mrs O. Getting some airtime also lol. Thanks you Eric for taking the time to record the videos. I too would love to see the Chevy engine swap. #SMA is the best.
+J Glassey (Glasseyi) Stay tuned you may get to see it!
+South Main Auto Repair thanks guys, I never know who I'm responding too. So thanks Mr. O. And Mrs. O.
Never Mrs.O.. heck she is never on the YT
+South Main Auto Repair Haha, ok good to know. Thanks Eric O.
Thank you Eric!!!! for showing us this engine Swap!!!!...all your videos are very important!!!!....shows us the real world!!!!...and with all your comments they became solid gold!!!!....thank you for your time and your work!!!!.....Grettings to all people at SMA, and Hello to Hanna too!!!!....she is a part of SMA, the channel and this important video series!!!! :) :) :)
Can't imagine the adrenaline rush after a new, or as in this case an older engine starts right up after all that work..Great job Eric.
+Kevin Woodcock Yeah I guess your right. It is satisfying. For me it seems it is just part of the job ya know...
watched agian, 6 years latter lol , nicely done, thanks
Great videos, I own a 2004 vibe with a 176k and haven't had to do much besides normal maintenance. I gave the car to my son who uses it away at college in Vermont and if he has engine problems, may invest in engine swap now. Great little car.
Top notch Premium job Eric, like most of the viewers I was surprised to see that much oil in the intake. 👍👍
+Steve Rob Oh man it was nasty!
Amazing job Eric. Every South Main Auto video I watch I learn a boat load of new information. Great series Eric. Thank you, Mrs. O, and Hanna.
ladies and gentleman It is my pleasure to introduce the auto mechanic of the year :ERIC O
Ahhh Back on the road,, I can sleep now. Thanks master Eric. Happy we all are.
now thats pure entertainment ...thanks Eric and Vanessa
I know I'm late to the game with this comment, but I like the engine swap videos, and other bigger projects. I especially liked this one, since I have a Corolla close to the same model year. Different car in many ways, but under the hood, it looks the same as mine. This series will help me whenever I'm tinkering.
Great video! This was very helpful. I own a 2003 Pontiac Vibe and to see what is around the engine and motor mounts etc.... was awesome. When spring hits I am going to do some repair work on my car to know what is under my engine is even better. Nice Job!!
Eric you need your own reality show on the discovery channel sponsored by brake clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good job!!
A great series, Eric. I see most of the prior comments / accolades are from 6 years ago. But this is still fun and interesting on Dec 26, 2022. Have a great New Year.
LOL only seen 1 or 200 hundred engine changes thankt to Mr ford &company . still nice to see someone else do one
Nice job Mr & Mrs O. Fun to watch.
Thanks +Mike Shelly
We came a long way to watch you put a POS back on the road, but it was fun watching you do it. I picked up a few (very few) nuggets of info. Keep up the fun videos.
+vipervette03 One nugget is better thank no nuggets!
yes it is my brother, you have changed my opinion of New Yorkers.(for the better) I appreciate all the effort you put into the videos.
"this is when it's good to have two people..." cue another mechanic to walk by. Love it!!!!!! Not even a "you got that"
+D Really Haha I have worked alone for many many years, Josh knows to stay busy with what he is doing and if I need help I will ask.
I actually was thinking that, I doubt you would be where you are without the well earned confidence. I agree with the others, your effort to post these vid's is definitely appreciated.RESPECT
Great series. Thanks for the ride.. I kept saying please don't forget the oil, please don't forget the oil... Neighbor did that with a new lawn mower once.. Ka boom.
+ItsAlwaysRusty Oh man, common rookie mistake lol
Another great video Eric Thanks for sharing!!! On them 1.8 L the most important thing is to check and make sure the radio works make them run faster LOL Take Care
+jim McMillen Oh yeah ya need that radio haha
Nice job Eric! Love to see a happy ending.
+David Goldberg Thanks Dave
This was a great series Eric. I've never seen an engine swap with so much detail. Thanks for letting us come along.
Another excellent series from SMA. Congrats on 25k subscribers. Keep the videos coming Eric.
love these series and the detail you put into them thank you for your hard work they provide hours of entertainment for us who love cars
+crapper1 I love cars too!
Great series! I can almost say that I have seen it all, but I know there is so much more. These videos are very informative and I have learned alot. I had considered doing an engine replacement on the Taurus when she blew the head gasket (other stuffs was wrong with the motor), but we ended up junking her and getting a newer car. In this specific case, it was better to do that.
Thanks for the videos Eric!
whos your new helper, and another one bites the dust, thanks to SMA!
+rbbbjl1 That is Hannah, she has been my helper for a long time.
Speculating on cause of original engine failure:PCV system fault leading to excessive blowby and oil intake to the engine. Carbon buildup on intake valves leading to loss of compression. Cylinder one (longest intake path) would likely receive less oil leading to delayed failure. Lots of evidence of poor maintenance.
I second that
Eric mentioned in video 1 an over rev condition would cause the valves to smack the pistons. Certainly the most likely cause.
@@lo1234-w9ryeah but it’s hard to overrev an automatic transmission, as he also stated.
Another FINE job Eric... thanks for taking us along!
I suppose it is not cost effective to "rebuild" engines anymore. It probably never was, which is why that even back in the day they sold "short blocks."
I rebuilt a 1963 Corvette engine once. I was, and I am still, an amature, so the job was totally botched. I learned a valuable lesson back those 40 years ago, and the lesson wasn't "if a professional can do it, so can I." What I learned was that you can't beat a guy at his own trade.
So I admire and respect you guys with a talent for auto repair, as I have tried it plenty of times. And, it wasn't easy then, and it's even harder now.
By the way, I'm starting a notebook with "South Main Auto Repair" quotes. Well, I guess it's time to flush this toilet, and ship it.
+Memphis Applegate Yup. Today's engine's require about $200 in TTY bolts from the dealer just to put back together. Salvage engines can be had for not much more.
+Memphis Applegate Well sir you will know I have been thinking the same thing about you too. I put up a wall in the basement to partition off a new room for guns, hunting stuff etc and was thinking man I wish I could build storage draws like Mr. Memphis. Fact is I can't and I don't have the tools for it. But man I have debated road tripping to have you build all my pull out draws and benches for reloading stuff. Like you say " you can't beat a guy at his own trade." Wish you were closer sir!
South Main Auto Repair Don't call me sir; it makes me feel old. Wait, I am old.
Remember, we want to see that next engine change-out.
***** stay tuned... Mr.
Thanks Eric, I loved this series, you give us home mechanics the courage to do more. "If you can do it, I can do maybe a little bit also".
+Ted Nugent Your the Nuge! I know you can do it!
SMA does it again.
I've never seen an intake with that kind of schmoo in it. Can't remember who said it but...."there's you're problem lady". My guess on the intake diaper is noise reduction. Great series, loved every minute of it. Thanks for taking the time to produce it!
Nice series! It's nice when you start them up for the first time and they run good...helps the stress level out. Another quality SMA job and it was a nice article the Evening Tribune did on SMA!! Over 25K subscribers and climbing!
+Robert Hayward Haha yeah, making the local news, front page too! haha at least it wasn't the obituaries... yet
I hope we got a lot more years before we make that section. I have a lot more cars I want to have fun fixing!!
well ya never know when your ticket is up :)
I've lived thru years of drag racing at 7.02 sec 189 mph, chute failures, funny car hops etc in my 32 Bantam Altered and thought I'd never make it to 30 but I'm 59 so hopefully my purpose on earth is to fix a lot more cars and die with grease on my hands.
+South Main Auto Repair Curiosity got to me what they were talking about with ETCG and timing belt so I checked out your post & had some good entertainment for awhile about differences in diagnosing engine failures and how to perform a cylinder leak-down check. For the small amount of time it takes to do a leak-down check it is worth it to give the customer an accurate diagnosis. I don't even do compression checks hardly b/c if I have the sparkplug out I'll put air to it and see where it is leaking and how bad. In drag racing we started doing leakdown checks on race engines long before people even knew what a leakdown check was. I wouldn't be putting a timing belt in an engine that has air leaking out the PCV/oil dipstick tube b/c of a hole in a piston(s).
I've got time on my hands due to a minor outpatient surgery so i binge watched this engine swap video from start to finish. I have watched so many of your videos I feel like I should add you to my xmas card list ( if i had one ) I think this is my first comment and your going to call me a hater but when i change an engine i like to clean the parts like the engine cover air box ect.The intake looked so good then that engine cover went on and well. I have told my kids many times to keep there cars clean because when they start looking like a piece of s*** you start treating it like a piece of s*** and it becomes a piece of s*** .That aside you are the best all around mechanic I have ever seen .You have the gift of being mechanically inclined and a good work ethic and i,m sure you would be good at any job that required tools and a brain and your young have a good family and a sense of humor you have it all. your richest man in south main or new york or both
Man Eric you even make an engineectomy look EZ. Actually it's more of a transplant isn't it. I had to watch your mini series to the very end. Well done sir.
You ain't no fool mr o, just a mechanical genius.
+Ryan Jones lol not even close
My 1999 Chevy S10 Xtreme had about that amount of oil in the intake. I told the neighbor you have to change your intake oil about every 100,000 miles, he wasn't very mechanically inclined and believed there was such a thing. I guess he asked the guy at Napa what brand he recommended for his intake oil.
Well, it was a joke for that specific case but I know for sure that some tractors and trucks have oil air filters (centrifugal/cyclon). The oil in them had to be changed much more frequently than after every 100k, though. There are also oil filters that do not look like your usual paper elements but are actually centrifuges.
thanks for another great video DR. O !!! it's got to be difficult to video and get all the great shots you do and remember where everything goes when you reassemble !!! at my age and with my weak arthritic hands i cant do much these days !!! CONGRATS on 25000 + subs and over 4 million views !!! GOD bless you and your family !!!
+gzoie Well I know what you mean with the arthritis, it is creeping in on me hard. Thanks sir!
South Main Auto Repair i know what you mean about the arthritis, I was a ase master auto tech specialising in driveability for thirty years. i had to retire a few years ago, due to advanced osteoarthritis and am now 100% disabled on social security disability and just had a total hip replacement in December. i have a small engine shop I ran on the side for years from home and I still do to this day. I'm limited in my mobility, but the mowers are a cakewalk to do, plus my teenage daughters help with the hard stuff. i miss doing cars, but with my small engine shop it keeps my hands busy, I can't stand just sitting around. keep up the great videos.
If you drill a 1/16" hole through the hood hinge through the bottom sheet metal next to the bolts (2 holes in opposite corners of the hinge), when you reinstall the hood you can slip a drill bit in the hole before you tighten the bolts to help to aline everything. Just a thought. Great video series. Thanks
+amtpdb1 Fantastic tip!
first!! LOL. This is a great series, good to see it almost in entirety as opposed to the old "we will swap out this engine, first thing we do is removed the coil pack….." and then bang cut to the engine is out and the are saying "yeah that was a pretty basic one…." Thanks for all the great videos.
+Nick Eld Haha nope we show it all!
Hey Eric, this is that one guy who actually likes his Cobalt" ECOTECH JUNKER!" I might be able to forgive your derogatory comment if you would tell me at what milage I should change the chain. Love your vids and get a big kick out of you and your wonderful family.
+dan andy simple when it breaks replace the engine, or the whole car, I would recommend japanese preferably honda...
Great videos I look forward to seeing them daily as I am an everyday mechanic always good to learn more by watching the videos
+Chad Gardee Cool!
Good job...I especially liked the 'fly by' at the end. :)
One thing I heard works when removing a hood.. is using an 1/8" drill bit and drilling a hole through the hood hinge into the hood mount. When you get done working on the engine just insert the drill...put in the bolts and your "good to go" as someone says.
I was starting to have SMA withdraw syndrome lol. Great job Eric O, take care and God bless.
+AnhYeuEmMaiMai69 I know I made ya wait forever lol
It's alive! ITS ALIVE!!!
Thankyou Mrs. O and Hannah for hard work. I've done a few engine swaps and assisted on a few. Great Video, hope this engine worked out ok. Another good job Mr. O!
I pulled out a can of that brake cleaner on Saturday and automatically I had to add a the fanfare.
+hoppes9 Feels good huh!?
Great series Eric, fun to watch and informative.
Woah. How did that much oil get in the intake?
Excellent series Eric. You have a knack for camera angles with some of this work as well. I've never done an engine swap. Certainly would feel more confident doing one now.
+zoidberg444 I dunno if it came through the PCV or what the circumstance there was, just glad I didn't slap it on...
36:00 Parental supervision is advised.
Awesome vid Eric.
Eric, quick tip. When u were installing the IM back on take a tiny little magnet smaller then the 3/8 drive square on your extension, plug your socket on and that'll hold your nut or bolt so that you dont have to have one hand on the bolt while installing. That way you have your other hand free to hold the IM flush while u hand theead those bolts in;) I do it all the time at work.
Great video as ever, last engine removal I did was out in the street,no fun when it rained, which is all the time where I live.
Right on man!! Been looking forward to this ending. Good job. Recently found your channel, love it.
I have an hour before going to work so your video was perfect. Well, the passengers can wait one minute. (ha ha) Nice one Eric. I enjoyed the trip.
+wyattoneable Thanks for watching:)
Awesome as usual, and to think the manual suggested removing engine from below, take advice and make your own mind up!
I watched the leak down video a couple of times took get a better understanding and it paid off 👌
Excellent job...as usual! Didn't see you put the intake gasket on...ut oh...lol.
+john smith No fear it was there.
Bread and butter,no difference in the approach over the pond, except 99% of our gearbox’s are Manuel,so more room needed ,enjoyed video mr o.
FROM PART 3: When trying to stretch cloth or leather in any upholstery setting use steam. It provides extra stretch and makes it less likely to tear. A lot of steam equals less muscle and smoother installs, and makes for a happier MRS. O.
Great series ! Good Fix . I was late for work because I was watching it.
+N Smith Oooops sorry!
😊
+N Smith tell your boss the reason and he will be late next due to whatching this site, LOL
+Willem Streutgers told him it was training :)
Great transplant Eric.
Decent video Eric. Love these in depth pieces. When I saw the ease the intake went on
I thrice cursed the engineers at Saturn for the grief I went through!!
I really enjoyed this and would love to watch the video for the "engine for the chevy pickup" if you decide to post it. Very much appreciate the time you spend recording these - informative, helpful, and even sometimes funny!
Dude, Ive been an auto tech for 45 years and just wanted to say I could work with you anytime
Great series Eric! Thanks for sharing!
+ComfortPlus Heating and Cooling Thanks for watching
the sound of air tools in the morning :) great video E.O !!
Thanks for taking the time to show us an engine swap. Great video!!:)
+Twag Carpy No prob, thanks!
I have a 04 vibe great lil car 257000miles loved the video keep up the great work e
+Tim Davis Oh nice!
Great job topped off with a dirty valve cover. Sorry, no way I don't wash that thing before placing it over all that hard work and great running engine. Just me I reckon. And no, in order for it to make the engine run better, Eric, it has to be clean. At least for the 5 minutes it'll have before it hits the dirt roads again. And yes, a clean valve cover would be a mismatch for the rest of that dirty engine, but then, it does sit on top. I guess that's why I just clean cars and don't work on them. I did love the video, Eric and thanx for making it for us. ;-)
I subscribed because this is the same car my wife got, I learn more of it and of you a pro. wear safety glasses and no kids around you. for safety reason. Great job.
GREAT JOB , WENT WELL , GREAT WATCHING
Great vid. Would luv to see old valve-piston condition but maybe next time.
Another awesome vid Eric O, I like watching the engine replacements , I have learned a lot from watching all your vids.
1 - 2 BBQ.... Well done thank you Dr O
i think we all know you torqued those torque converter bolts with the little red torque wrench. you make all them RUclips torque Nazi's cringe. love it
Great series loaded with usable information. And as always a guest appearance of "Brake Clean". :)
great video watch it two times
+Michael Sawyers Cool :)
Super clean job dropping that engine in man.
awesome series as always..
"Death Row", that's awesome!
+Corky C Haha yeah that is what we call it!
long haul Eric 4 parts great viewing very interesting alround keep up the good work. looking forward to the next one.
Awesome work as usual,....... thanks
Nice job and the engine sounds sweet. Would definitely like to see the Chevy engine swap!!
+Robert Sargenti well I may have recorded it....
+Robert Sargenti well I may have recorded it....
What happened to the AC compressor R&R, or did I miss that part?
Well that's proof that it can be done without dropping the whole cradle. Also with limited engine hoist space. Great follow along 👍
Awesome job! Ready for another series
