  • Pat and Taryn enlisted the help of Olaver to renovate their 1900s Victorian weatherboard home in Brunswick. They wanted a natural and light-filled extension that would accommodate their growing family and allow for entertaining friends.
    The heritage of the existing home needed to be retained, with Olaver keeping the front rooms intact and converting the living room into a third bedroom with an ensuite. The bedrooms were separated from the living area by a wet zone, with the kitchen, living, and dining area at the rear of the home.
    The interiors showcased painted white brick, a recycled red brick perimeter and a mix of muted green laminate and Vic Ash timber veneer for the joinery. Sustainability was a key consideration, with thermal mass in the brick and concrete floor, high-level windows, and fans to regulate temperature. The home is compact by Australian standards, at 119m2, which is inherently sustainable.
    The result is a sustainable, family-friendly home with a natural, textured, and light-filled atmosphere.

    Finally someone in Australia who chooses normal square footage, and it is also a well-executed project. Bravo.

      @MatteoManzi The clients may well have gone bigger with their design but were restricted by the size of the block (land). You may know that Brunswick is one of the 'ring' suburbs of Melbourne City central. It's period housing includes grander family homes, two-storey terraces and more humble, timber cottages like the one seen here. /Because of the proximity to the city, land and house values are high - as seen also in Sydney, and to a lesser extent in the state capital cities of Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart.

    This is a house the family will enjoy living in. A restful, peaceful, quiet calm will sneak up on them. It's the windows and their position. The windows. Great job. A restrained monastic haven in busy buzzy Brunswick.

    SO well executed. I love the modest, yet super-functional size. The brick detail around the perimeter (even under the cabinets) is brilliant. Well done, Olaver!

      Beautiful extension! Very inspiring! Sustainability wise, was it worth to bring Carrara marble all the way from Italy?

      It's a small family home! Land size is probably 200-300sqm at most so without building up you have to cram in

    • @hman9581
      @hman9581 Год назад

      @@serpserpserp Yes, it is a small family home. However, there are too many ideas slotted into such a small space. Walls and cabinets are not integrated and don't share the same colour - marking them out as numerous individual objects - and somewhat cluttered.
      Plus, too many different materials which tend to break up the reading of the space. And, those exposed rafters make the place look messy.

      @@hman9581 count me among those who think it's great. Fun, casual, easy but beautifully detailed and appears to be quality. And unlike many architect interviews in their work, Emlyn comes across as genuine, unpretentious and tuned in to what his clients want. Nice.
