Why Geoff Johns' Aquaman is more than just a New 52 series

  • It's crazy how the New 52 is now an old reboot. Nearly 10 years has passed and fans are still debating whether or not this was a good time for comics. Regardless of which side of that pool you swim in, there are still some runs that have transcended beyond the universe-spanning relaunch that they originated from.
    Aquaman is one such title. Having been gifted the best writer at DC, and one of the top-tier artists in Ivan Reis, the task of cleaning up Arthur Curry's tainted reputation seemed harder than cleaning the oil from the seas. Now that the run and that entire period of comics is behind us, I checked out the Omnibus to see if this really was the story that The King Of Atlantis needed.

    I remember reading this whole book in one day and only two sittings. Might be my favorite run ever, everything about it is so perfect

    I just reread this series and its absolutely the thing that sticks out from the New 52 the most to me. 2013 was when I started reading comics and I read a few DC runs, but Aquaman was by far my favorite.
    I love how they reimagined Black Manta and Ocean Master. Black Manta's rivalry with Aquaman was much more personal than prior iterations and whilst both characters were in the wrong, it very much felt like it was Aquaman's mistake that sent them both down their paths.
    Ocean Master was great too. Most people just see him as a Loki-type character, where he's the jealous younger brother who wants the throne for himself. I love that in this run he already has the throne because Aquaman gave it to him, and Ocean Master doesn't hate him at first, in fact they establish the two shared a bond for a time but it was driven by their shared hatred for the surface world, which Aquaman grew out of but Ocean master never could. It made that Vulko twist even better because Ocean Master saw himself as the hero, and its no wonder that afterwards there were still those that wanted him to be king since he was genuinely defending his people, even if part of him always wanted to attack the surface.
    I just love the approach they took by having Aquaman be a character with a lot of history, and having a big part of his life be this dark phase after his father died and he was exposed to the world, during which spawned the beginnings of his two greatest villains.

    Thanks for the review, MD. I thoroughly enjoyed this omni. Heartfelt, funny, violent and epic. So pleased I got this. Ivan Reis and Paul Pelletier's artwork is sublime. And Rod Reis colours too. Just wonderful.

    The New 52 run by Geoff Johns was my gateway with Aquaman. You should do a review on Peter David's run on the character. Little warning I wasn't a fan of Peter David's Aquaman.

    Great Review dude. I think What GJ did for Aquaman was great but Abnett's Run was more enjoyable overall.
    I think not having to do much setup, gave him much more freedom to go at his own pace. Both are great runs though and one continues from the other.

      Abnett ruined Aquaman with the never ending arc, corum rath. Besides his run was full of contradictions, the low sales of Abnett speak volumes of how fans rejected it. Abnett started out well but soon wasted the boost Rebirth brought. Besides he never delivered the promise with which Rebirth Aquaman started with, when fans realized that the wedding with Abnett would never take place it was a freefall in sales. He left a book in a dead end.
      The only Aquaman writer in the last decades to come second to Johns was Parker.

    I love the work D.C. Comics has done on Aqua-Man and in an industry with the same characters in the same locations over and over, Aquaman is a breath of fresh air!!!! They have created so many great characters and non character IPS they have created around him, and to me he is far from a joke - he is becoming one of the coolest comic book characters!!! If they could find more and better ways to create stories/ways to get the different ecosystems (land/water/air) to work together it would be cool as hell!!!

    Brother hella review I'm going to have to get this now. But one book that made aquaman a beast was Justice with Alex ross. He got his head cut open by brainiac and grew it back and escaped. Beast mode

    I haven't read any Green Lantern but i read this and 10 years of this would be amazing and its a shame that he didn't get the chance to go at this project for a decade.

    Ivan Reis is a true successor to Alex Raymond. I love he & fellow Brazilian Master, Mike Deodato, JR. `s art. Geoff Johns is a master writer also.

    The fact that Johns made me care about AQUAMAN is pretty self explanatory 🤪
    Great video as usual Dogg!)))
    I enjoyed this book SOOO much during this summer!
    I agree that (the great)Pelletier after Reiss seemed like a downgrade...

    I read a small first chunk of the run in singles back when the New 52 was still "New", and finally got the omni so I can go back and revisit/finish it. But man, that first intro bit in issue 1 is super memorable and excellently done. Set the tone straight away! This guy's no joke! Great review Dogg!

    ☼ yeah, but why does he have ANY powers? or powers different to the rest of ALL ATLANTIS! i dont understand. is he posiedens daughter or something?

    • @rodmoore1577
      @rodmoore1577 2 года назад

      I wish it was that simple. If he's half human half atlantean how does he have powers and abilities that real atlanteans have? I always thought the best way to clear this up was to have posidien be his father. That would account for his abilities and powers and would be a great plot point. But alas no one chose to go There. Would've loved to read that story arc

    Geoff Johns stay on Aquaman was cut short indeed, ironically for doing too well. Some people at DC did not like that Aquaman was outselling better known characters. Keep in mind that when Johns took over Aquaman, the character was considered finished by DC. Many people at DC as Johns and Reis related, told them that it was a waste of time and energy to do Aquaman, but Johns insisted. When he proved Didio and others wrong the later at the first occasion removed him. Since then Aquaman has never again reached the heights as with Johns. Aquaman with Johns reached heights that in history he never achieved.

      If that's true, then that's a shame. I'm new to Aquaman and Geoff Johns run on him is my first experience reading any comics in relation to the character. I love it so far. Especially the art for it. It's crazy to me that Johns would be fired for doing justice to a character that previous writers didn't have the skill to do.

    • @chrisgrech7992
      @chrisgrech7992 15 дней назад

      @@fireshadow6632 he wasn't fired, but removed from the book as his Aquaman was overshadowing other more famous characters in sales. Johns had much more to do and write with Aquaman, is evident that he solicits, at the end of his run, the Rise of the 7 kingdoms. Which he never came to write in comics but included it into movie, which he co-wrote. Exploring the 7 kingdoms would have brought endless story paths - new enemies, new allies, Johns had in mind something like the colored spectrum of the Lanterns corps he did in his celebrated Green Lantern run.
