    Hi, thanks a lot for watching and commenting on the video! I did want to clarify further on my point about Wilf /Bernard Cribbins
    I’m aware that he unfortunately passed before they could finish shooting all the scenes they had in mind, however they still could have done a more respectful edit before releasing the episodes, like cutting the scene where Sylvia calls the Doctor an idiot for getting emotional at the thought of Wilf being “no longer with us” as Donna said, I also think it’s odd to have the in memoriam after the credits instead of at the end of the episode, most people don’t sit through the credits so would miss it.
    I’m not saying the writers/producers of the show don’t care about Cribbins, but it came across as rushed and not considered.
    Hope this clears that up, you're free to debate over it if you want lol

    My doctor was Matt Smith. The old man in a young mans body I loved the acting he did to show he was much older then he looked while at the same time showing that theirs one thing the doctor won’t do is grow up I checked out during the hiatus during Capaldi’s Run. I was hesitent to pick it back up when i saw Capaldi using a lot of politicly charged language in his last season and was only curious about the show again when John Simms The Master returned then it dropped female doctor for 13 I just couldn’t see the character working as a woman (we are different and thats wonderful) so I dropped it then I heard about the timeless children and it was like they dug up a corpse of something I loved and killed it again. Then the 60th Anniversary specials and the introduction of 15th doctor and even more pandering have killed this show for me permanently, along with any hope of it recovering. The doctor is still on that planet with River thats where the show ends for me.

    • @Nargon46
      @Nargon46 3 месяца назад +3

      @DalekCaanOfSkaro I understand what the context of him leading up to the quote is, but it's a false accusation (at least almost entirely false, there are definitely bigots who but they are few and far between). It has become the standard reply of any actor in any show with bad writing and terrible characters to defend themselves by citing racism or other such isms/phobias. However, everybody loved Captain Jack (very gay), so that argument is invalid, and nobody ever brought up Mickey or Martha's race. I've never heard anyone complain about Missy, and as for changing the status quo the 2005 restart of the series had plenty of detractors but was generally adored by audiences and critics. They didn't antagonize anyone for not liking the Doctor being sexy now, or that Gallifrey blew up, etc, they just made their show and set a standard for great writing and character work. Those standards are long gone, it's objectively poorer then RTD's previous works, and, befitting the modern entertainment industry climate, rather than admit people's valid criticisms about writing and characters they hide behind a false accusation of bigotry. Again, there are a few people that have made remarks specifically about Mr. Gatwa's race, etc, but those few idiots don't make up the millions of viewers Dr. Who has lost since the series started. The people who have written their reviews about the writing, character problems, and how the show actively antagonizes its existing fan base do. So his earlier statements can be disregarded. All that matters is this: I gave the show a chance. I was excited for the season. I really loved Gatwa's casting and in a lot of ways I still think it was a great choice, he's an excellent actor. But the writing made it clear their only goal is to push agenda at the cost of coherent story. When I complained, Ncuti said I must be a bigot and told me to go outside. So while I am not a bigot, I will take his advice, turn off the TV, and go touch some grass. He just didn't count on that applying to the millions of other non-bigots doing the same.

    • @DalekCaanOfSkaro
      @DalekCaanOfSkaro 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Nargon46I don't get what your point is. What, you think Ncuti was talking about every person? Because he wasn't. We both agree there would have been at least some people reacting negatively to his casting because of his skin colour. We both agree that bigots would react negatively, and the Variety article asked him about those bigots. He didn't say everyone, he didn't believe it was all fans, he was asked about that group of people, it might have been 10 people or 1000 people, and told them too touch grass. I dont understand why you keep including yourself in that group he was critciising whilst claiming to feel judged as you weren't part of that group.
      Also, to say Freema received no criticism for her casting is simply ignorant. There are interviews online talking about the hate she received when cast. Also, when Varada was announced, she was falsely accused of replacing Millie, or being cast exclusively on her skin. So racism was a big thing then, and it still is now.
      If an actor blames all critcism of their acting or show exclusively on bigots, then yeah, it's annoying. There are many good critics out there with creative critcism who don't judge out of predujice. But Ncuti wasn't talking about critics of his acting, or defending the series, because the context of the quote was that it was surrounding his casting before he even played the role. There was no reason to unfairly hate him when he hasn't even stepped in the costume yet or performed, and those who judged him without fair reasons and hated him, yeah he has every right to call them bigots, as he hadn't even had a chance to prove himself yet. Dont get me wrong, apprehension to a casting knowing their previous bodies of work is fine as you might question can they pull off this gig, but nobody should have been hating him as there was no reason to.

    • @lord_egg
      @lord_egg 3 месяца назад +2

      @@DalekCaanOfSkaro The amount of actual bigots is a small tiny group. So small that it wouldn't warrant a comment from the show itself. The fact that they felt the need to comment on it indicates that they believe that group to be bigger. Why? We have no confirmative proof but it is logical to assume that they consider everybody who doesn't like 'the agenda' as bigots. After all, that IS what they're pushing.

    • @DalekCaanOfSkaro
      @DalekCaanOfSkaro 3 месяца назад +1

      @@lord_eggThey didn't feel the need to talk about it, because they were asked about it. It was an interview, they were asked a question, they answered. This wasn't "damage control", this was Ncuti being asked about the response to his casting. It wasn't the show responding, it wasn't a formal letter by the BBC, it was Ncuti being asked a simple question, and answering with a simple response. End of.
      Since the series has ended, give me one interview where RTD, Ncuti or Millie has defended the writing through blaming bigots. Genuinely, because if they did, then I would agree that they arent taking responsibility for writing descisions.
      Also, it doesn't matter how small or minute the hate is, if people are being racist, you call it out. I dont get this argument "oh, only a few people were being racist so we won't talk about it", if racism is a thing, then it needs to be said.
      Agenda? Seriously, pulling the agenda card? Anyone has an agenda, you do, I do. An agenda is just a point to be made, and Doctor Who has been fighting for the same "agenda" for over 60 years. Yes, it's become more obvious, the writing might not be doing it justice, but trying to pretend it's something new is just ridiculous.
      So, what is this agenda? Well in your eyes, I'm guessing it's the awareness of social issues like racism and so on. Do I think The Star Beast was out of order for how that line is written? Yes, like many other big Doctor Who fans like DTDW or Rich Hutson. But for the rest of the series, it's been fine. It's been defending the same the same people it's been doing since 1963. An episode about a romance? Girl in the Fireplace 2006. A gay romance? The Pilot 2017. Racism? The Daleks 1963. Capitilsm? Oxygen 2017. Dictators? The Sound of Drums 2007 or The Daleks 1963.
      This agenda has been there all along. Now if you disagree with it, fine? But if you disagree with it for unfair, predujice reasons without justifiable reason, then yeah, you are gonna get called out. This agenda is just being aware of social issues like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc, and if you do disagree with those pretty basics concepts, then im sorry, but that's a you problem.

    Considering her mother and grandfather are still alive that money would also have improved their lives significantly. Not to mention 166 million pounds? Give away a hundred million and keep sixty six for your family. Oh and several books have mentioned part of the reason the doctor tends to give away huge amounts of money is that (a) its a lottery the person historically won, (b) a lottery where an extra person doesn't really affect the original winner e.g. they get twenty million instead of twenty five and (c) he's got so much money in banks around the universe due to compound interest he occasionally has to buy something to get some of it back into the econonomy.

Having the sonic screwdriver do anything and everything you need is only one problem out of a massive list of problems. Using the name Rose for this character is so offensive, when you already had such an iconic character named Rose Tyler. And sure, make the excuse that it's in Donna's subconscious, doesn't make it less offensive. It's like you want a new version of Rose to undo the memory of the original Rose. And so often having the Doctor being undercut by everyone who knows better than him... It's like we can't have him as a hero anymore and that's just heartbreaking. I was fine when he regenerated into a woman, and don't mind if he regenerates into a black man, but keep the Doctor who he's always been... someone who saves the day and someone to look up to and respect. While I agree that Martha is the best companion, I think a lot of the points in this video are a little unfair. The Bernard Cribbins thing for example is totally out of their hands. Donna giving away her money is called out in the episode and calling her husband 'a diversity hire' seems very rude. His lack of surprise at an alien isn't really a criticism considering he's been in Doctor Who episodes before and I feel Donna isn't presented as being better than the Doctor- just as an equal, similarly to before. Her calling out the Doctor and keeping him in check was a defining part of why their dynamic was so popular in the first place.
    The similarities to the Wrath Warriors and the At-ats I didn't really get. Beep the Meep is a call-back character to the comic books from the 80s so not a Grogu clone and the 60th as a whole was filmed before Doctor Who partnered with Disney for streaming and only released afterward, so that narrative kind of falls flat on its face. Overall, the Star Beast is an episode that is worthy of criticism, and probably far and away the worst episode of this new era... but all of the points you raised in this video are quite silly in my opinion. I hope you keep watching the show though. A lot of the more recent episodes are very good!

    I was really looking forward to Doctor Who being run by someone else than Chibnall. I actually enjoyed season 13, but 11 and 12 were just bad, except for few very rare episodes.
    Then the Star Beast came and I was honestly dissapointed, I really didn't like the episode, it felt a bit cringey and I didn't like the sonic screwdriver being overpowered like that.
    However then came Wild Blue Yonder and it's honestly one of my favourite episodes ever and the Toymaker wasn't bad either.
    When it comes to Ncuti Gatwa, I like him as a doctor, though I do agree they overused the crying a bit too much, it then looses impactfulness. Space Babies wasn't great, the second part of the finale was dissapointing, but there were some standout episodes. Boom, 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble were actually really good episodes. What I didn't like is the lack of character development for the doctor and especially Ruby, she fell flat for me and I did not feel sad when she departed, her family wasn't developed either. Her first timr in Space Babies, she's just so accepting to everything, after almost dying in Boom, she has no reaction, she doesn't feel like a character, because she does not react realistically. It's a shame, maybe the next companion will be better, I also hope we get to see more of the doctor and some more traditional style doctor who stories, rather than just experimental ones. Your typical landing somewhere, exploring, figuring out something is off, I feel like special episodes such as Blink, work really well if the whole season isn't that. If the whole season is that, you don't get time for character development.

There is no way she would ever have done that. the Doctor was amde a joke and the whole epsiode was a shocker. I know it's a cliche almost but DW died with Peter Capaldi depart. strangely I find Tennant's Doctor less appealling now that these modern episodes have aired. To me and i know there are some people who won't agree but i think Peter Capaldi was the best NuWho Doctor ever period because he was the Doctor on form and insisted on no romance with his companions which got so tiresome.

The character of Wilf is the grandad of Donna (one of the main characters of this special) and referenced many times throughout in a pleasant context. He is clearly a character beloved by both the audience and the in-universe characters. Therefore, at the end, when he shows up, it's earned. The 'problem' (and I put that in inverted commas because it is not a problem, it is a fact of life) is that the actor passed. Totally agree, and it only got worse from there.
    One point I love to hear because a lot of other videos and comments don't really pick this up, is that yes, David Tennant Round 1 was brilliant. I would also use it to get other people into the show and it had around 12 million viewers in that era. People who weren't even fans wouldn't watch it and everyone was going ballistic over it at the award's ceremony.
    Similar to the person running this page, I watched the Matt Smith era hating it, and then only a bit of the Peter Capaldi before thinking, "I can't do this anymore," and stopped altogether.
    Then I started again when Jodie Whitaker came in and, once again against popular opinion, I didn't mind it because it was at least watchable to me, so I saw the whole series. One or two minor points were a pain, but on the whole, I liked it. (Ace has the best line in the whole of the new series when she picks up her baseball bat and say, "Beyonce copied my moves).
    I did watch the Star Beast and the one after it and didn't mind them too much. Then I saw snippets for the Giggle and went, "No way," and now cringe at every other snippet I see for the latest season.
    So no, I don't think Doctor Who ended after the Capaldi run, like people are saying. I think it actually ended at the End of Time, when the Doctor said "I don't want to go." It lost viewers ever since after that. If they'd ended it right at that point it would have been best...show...ever.

    First off, love your video, largely agree! I hated Star Beast, kinda liked Wild Blue Yonder (felt more like Tennant's original run), and thought the Giggle was somewhere in-between, flawed but with some good spots. All the points you made were spot-on (I might disagree about giving the money away, but I don't remember if the show indicated she and her husband agreed on it, or she just made that decision without him, one of which I would find laudable and the other highly objectionable).
    But one thing I thought I'd drop in (being that 'ak-tually!' nerd), is that the villain's cutesy design is actually from a 1980s 4th Doctor comic; in fact, this whole story is (except with Rose and Donna dropped into it, instead it was originally the 4th Doctor and an african-american woman companion from the comics (first in the franchise, as a trivia point, though obviously Martha was the first onscreen); and the character of Beep the Meep is kind of a fan favorite from comics and audio. (The whole point being the 'cute and cuddly looking furball who is actually a genocidal dictator'). In this respect, it's kind of like Star Wars bringing in Grand Admiral Thrawn from the books, a bit of a tip of the hat for the classic fans. So the overall story and 'marketable' design of the villain were baked in from the start, and it was kind of a cool thing to adapt an old fan favorite comic- including its Star Wars-y look and specific designs.
    But then they had to pollute it with... well, all the stuff you pointed out. :-) Whereas a straight adaptation (uh, no pun included) of the source material wouldn't have included all the frustrating issues you bring up.

    This was such a great piece. Well structured , thoughtful , totally honest, and nicely edited. You set the stall with the inro and laid it all out with a very well thought out narrative.
    I agree with so so much. Yay, more props to Martha! And I have an almost biblical hate towards the sonic screwdriver / magic wand / plot convenience . Drives me nuts.
    I felt the first revival RTD brought the love and enthusiasm he had since he was a kid. And in the second RTD revival, all he brought was the enthusiasm of a famous tv writer and a wodge of Disney cash. The love had gone.
    The whole trilogy was the weakest thing they could've done. I'd rather they give Ncuti the chance to start as a fumbling mysterious doctor in a 3 episode arc allowing him to grow into his identity and the audience follow and grow with him. But RTD had him shoot out the cannon like a Ritalin-addled Mighty Mouse. It devalued Tennant, ruined Gatwa's chance of legitimacy, and destroyed the credibility of RTD (that last one I am not bothered about). It all had me agreeing with Ecclestone. Get rid of RTD and his producers and The Doctor could return again.
    Ignore my waffle (sorry) , your video was top notch👌

    I lost interest mid-way Capaldi's clara run, cause I loathed that Clara was so so so important to everything and everyone, it's just not the sort of story or companion dynamic I enjoy. But I recently went back to watch Season 10 and the Capaldi specials and they are amazing. Loved them. And Loved Capaldi. He's absolutely my favourite doctor now.
    Haven't seen any of Jodie's episodes and never will. I did watch the Starbeast and some of the regeneration into the new doctor. But just couldn't get into it despite how much i loved Doctor-Donna. i really dislike being told to love how great women are or how great non-binary identity is by a story.

    I'm glad about what you said at 3:17 - 3:29 about a trans character. I knew transsexuals, as they were known then, in the 80s and grew up watchin Dr Who in the 70s. I have no issue with them but the performance was just shocking. The character was just filler and seemed like a last minute addition that seemed to tick the boxes and just had bland dialogue.

    Feel like you only focused on the bad episode the other 2 are better. The mid one is great & the last one is pretty good until round the end with the odd stuff of Bi-generation which is kinda odd but other than that its good. Also on the Wilf thing I think they said he was meant to have a larger role in the third episode but sadly passed away before they could finish filming all his scenes so we are left with the single scene at the end of episode 2 instead of him being in the 3rd episode not really like its the film makers fault he died. I do feel like the 1st episode became worse as it went on though the original story was far better.

    I rewatched a load of doctor who end of last year/through this year as a result of the david tennant come back.
    Well, it was a first time for eccleston as I grew up with the last season of Tennant and matt smith and Capaldi mostly. But I think Eccleston is probably the best doctor and that season 2 of Tennant (season 3), with Martha, is probably the best season (Martha is an amazing and underrated companion imo).
    Ive not watched any of Jodie except for the first episode when it aired and I thought it was shit.
    That being said, I think the new tennant and ncuti gatwa is mostly good and if they cut the preachy shit it would be great. The thing is, pre Whittaker had political undertones at times but never preached that hard. Now its so preachy its cringe. People dont mind politics in tv as long as its done well. When its rammed down your throat people turn off of it even if they agree with it (im pro lgbt and womens rights etc. and I still get turned off from preachy shit in tv)

      Ah yes the concept that is of vital importance in a show about alien beings and time travel. "Hello alien what are your pronouns?" "Pro . . . nouns? I'm sorry I don't understand." "Do you want to be called a male or a female." ". . . can't you tell by looking at me?" "Yes you look male but do you identify as being male?" "Look I'm sure this is all very fascinating to your primitive species but if you could just point me to the nearest authority figure with combat forces I am being hunted right now." "But . . . but I don''t know whether to call you male or female!" "Enough NOM NOM NOM. Hopefully the next primitive meat bag will just answer my questions. I mean seriously male or female what was it trying to mate with me? Disgusting."

    Well said. I was stunned how offensive Star Beast was. Wild Blue Yonder wasn't terrible, but nevertheless a horrible experience, confirming Timeless Children as canon, making the Doctor a "b---er" (censored to avoid comment being deleted by Google) and changing Isaac Newton's race, while making him a horrible "s---y". What an insult to a great man!
    Then the Giggle was horrible nonsense, pure fantasy. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, we got Devil's Chord, absolutely vile, way into the realms of nonsensical fantasy, then on to increasingly worse episodes, including the horrible politics of Dot and Bubble, and of course giving the Doctor a g-- lover in Rogue.
    Even putting aside horrible politics, the worst stuff was how bewilderingly nonsensical it all was, from 73 Yards to the two-part final where the Doctor is now a full wizard whose screwdriver can literally do anything, including changing a simple piece of glass into a tablet computer with a battery, a case, a screen, and the computer is intelligent and can show you videos from the future if it likes you. WHAT THE HELL!?
    The only good episode was Boom. As much as Moffat's writing had become annoying and bland, the man CAN write. RTD has become a lunatic.

  • @DalekCaanOfSkaro
    @DalekCaanOfSkaro 3 месяца назад

    I think RTD making this the first episode of this brand new era in the way he did has led to many problems and negative interpretations. Dont get me wrong, I dont blame people for having doubts after seeing it with some wonky bit of dialogue and some strange pacing descisions, but if you are judging this whole era based on this episode, im sorry, but you are missing some amazing Who. We had banger episodes like Boom, 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, Wild Blue Yonder, The Devils Chord, The Giggle that were some of the best Who in ages.
    I think with The Star Beast, it was trying to bite off more than it could chew, making it a sequel to Journeys End, setting up a new era and being an exploration into what it means to be trans. For most of the episode, the exploration into trans difficulties was done really well, and dived into the name calling and slip ups in pronouns in a mature and accesible way and criticised the creuelty of predujice and transphobia. But it felt like that last line was designed in a way to annoy grifters on RUclips like Nerdrotic or Bowlstrek (which dont get me wrong, they deserve to be called out for their behaviour), but it did have the issue of alienating those who arent apart of that group aswell, which isnt fair. But I can take the rough with the smooth.
    I feel like what RTD should have done is isntead of basing this on a comic, he should have just done an entirely original story. No Meep or Wrath Warriors, just explore 14s and Donnas relationship across the 3 episodes (and use The Toymaker as part of the story to tie it up) and spend a full episode exploring what it means to be trans, which would give more time and meaning to the story, and hopefully go into depth about the cruelty of transphobia and what being trans means and feels like, and really let Yasmin Finney be able to get time to perform.
    I just wanna take time to let people know, that when this new era was releasing, we have seen a surge of reaction to all of Doctor Who on RUclips. Just from quick observations, weve had Syntell, Casual Nerd Reactions, funnylilgalreacts, emme reacts, Britany Binges, React and Ramble, Jules Reacts, UgoWatch and I think there were more, so this new era has definitely raised awareness of the show, and has brought amazing new people in. I would definitely recommend people watch UgoWatch, Syntell and classic reactors like The Blind Wave and The Reel Rejects for their reaction of this new era, as they have enjoyed it massively.
    RTD has some polishing to do, and I think he has some work to do on scripts, narratives in an 8 episode format, but he is still telling good stories in Season 1, and execution aside, the themes he goes into, especially for being distributed on Disney, are very important, and I feels its important to hear the points raised.
    (Also yeah, I agree with the sonic critcism. Even RTD stopped writing it to have all these features in the next episode)

    Respectfully, if you're going to do a video essay at least do some research into the video you are trying to make so you don't make a fool of yourself. Allow me to elaborate:
    1) The Doctor and Donna meeting up unexpectedly is a crucial plot point from the original run of RTD, a simple search or rewatching of an episode could have fixed that
    2) The reaction to Rose is mostly due to the 10th Doctor's first companion Rose (who was mentioned a lot and had a romantic relationship with the Doctor tragically cut short). Since he's just unexpectedly bumped into Donna and hears the name 'Rose' he would 100% be taken aback.
    3) Skinny suit joke, guess you're allergic to humour \_:|_/. Humour about the Doctor's clothing has been made in many different episodes and even in the Classic Series, I mean have you SEEN what the 6th Doctor wore? Even the actor said it was the stuff of nightmares. Would you argue that the many same jokes made about 10 in the original run were demeaning and not an attempt at humour like they clearly are?
    4) I think you're making a lot of assumptions about the lottery winnings. It's made clear that she didn't do it for "bragging rights", you even mention that she does it to be more like the Doctor and when Donna finally comes back, the first thing she does is tell the Doctor this and is pretty annoyed to say the least (bit of a cop-out I know but it kind of makes sense). We also don't know whether her husband was that against it (though he might have been like I said we don't know). Besides it's not like she gave it all away. It should also be noted that some people who win the lottery sometimes find it too stressful and don't know what to do with that amount of money but I guess I'm making assumptions too \_:)_/
    5) The Meep was created in a Doctor Who comic strip from 1980 and actually looked cuter and arguably more 'Disneyfied' than now. Some research and a peek at the credits could have sorted this, with it being clearly stated that it was adapted from said Doctor Who comic and therefore, not a Disney creation.
    6) While Disney is providing a larger budget, it is just that, a bigger budget. The creative control is firmly in the hands of the BBC and RTD and certainly not Disney.
    I should also clarify that I'm not writing this because I think it was "The bestest Doctor Who in all of histowy and if anyone says otherwise they are doo-doo heads", I don't. It was pretty average at best but honestly, you don't really seem to be taking the main problems into account like the plot holes and the anti-climactic / simple way that the Doctor-Donna was restored having been hyped up so much throughout the episode. Most of these arguments could have been fixed with the smallest ounce of research into why these decisions might have been made rather than a general "Disney bad" mentality which, at least to me, sounds rather...
    uncritical
    ;)

      @@VelaiciaCreator I can't speak for the OP, but I suspect that it is a fundamental disagreement on whether the ideas presented here represent a better world, whether advocating for a better world justifies sloppiness in execution (or whether that just harms the message- having just recently finished working my way through the early seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and the 2016 Ms. Marvel comics, I would argue that an idea presented hamfistedly can actually alienate the audience it is meant to reach and do a disservice to the cause it is meant to promote), and a general disagreement on whether someone with 'TERF' beliefs, like JKR, is actually wrong, or whether they are the ones with an accurate grasp of reality of RTD and the like are the ones advocating a harmful falsehood.

      @@andrewgilbertson5672 While your run-on sentence was a bit hard to parse, I think I get what you're saying. It's the same thing from 2016, where those objectively correct people who were just a little cringe ended up shat on across the internet. Hell, it resulted in the same copy-pasted still frames that are used to this day. One such example, the "triggered" girl... wasn't even triggered. She was just expressive.
      Ultimately though, I have to firmly state that positive representation, hamfisted or not will be better every time than false and stigmatizing representation, such as Benedict Cumberbatch's role in Zoolander 2.
