      Yea even tho it wasn’t intentional the effect could maybe be the space around the ship as it initiates warp drive or something looks pretty cool.

      @@aquarium6109That's what I was thinking it was, a warp effect or a shield effect. I saw the thumbnail, jumped to the end of the video, saw the finished product, hey that's cool how did he do that? Back up into video, "I don't know what happened." LOL It is awesome. Sometimes art isn't planned even though bringing the materials together is.

    For me the best thing about art is the mistakes. Having an initial intention. Starting the process. Then if something happens purely by accident, you take that and create something else out of it. It's about keeping it going. I love this process of creating art! A lot of people don't like clickbait titles. Whilst that is indeed an amazing piece of work, it is not a ship in a bottle. It's a ship in a bottle shaped piece of resin. The skills required to produce each are quite different, so someone expecting to see how to make a ship in a bottle may well have been disappointed by what they found.

    the resin you used cured way too fast.... generated lots of heat, and the PVC pipe you used did not all ow any form of expansion.... resin hit a critical expansion point and cracked on the inside due to the pressure from expansion... my advice is to use a resin that cures in 24 or 48 hrs at room temp.....

    • @WRMonger1
      @WRMonger1 4 года назад +27

      The top of his “mold” was open and he had it in a bell jar, for all intents and purposes so I’m pretty sure that wasn’t it. Composite materials have theoretically no thermal expansion so it likely had little to do with the “pressure” from expansion, I’ve seen this in paper cups as well. More than likely, however, it’s because he didn’t prep the model he was casting. If he’d painted resin onto the model it would have reduced the potential for an exotherm shot (crack).

    • @hawwusong74
      @hawwusong74 4 года назад +16

      @@WRMonger1 you are absolutely correct.... The fractures could also result from the conditions you stated. It could also result from too much hardener, the metal toy itself expanding from heat, internal exothermic expansion that was not congruent with the external expansion etc etc... Could be a variety of reasons. In my experience, painting the resin on the model beforehand only helps to prevent air bubbles from stubbornly adhering to the model. Have cracked many a cast in my lifetime, and it happens whether I brush the resin on the model or not. To prevent all these disappointments, I would suggest a 24hr setting resin makes most sense, as it would not generate as much heat and therefore not cause fractures, or even model separations voids after casting. I understand some even use resin with a 72hr setting time.
      By the way, I have used many brands of resin before, and some do expand slightly when curing, and they certainly do shrink after casting. Expansion ranges from 0-1.5%, shrinkage 0.001-4%. I notice that the more costly the resin, the lower the values would be. So I guess use the premium stuff for the greatest chance of success, especially if the item to be encapsulated is one-off and no fuck ups allowed. But the cost can be 4x the "toy grade" types of resin.

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's a compressing chamber to minimize the size of any bubbles floating around. If resin was put in a vacuum the air bubbles would be massive. Maybe a pocket of uncured resin?

    • @Nellyontheland
      @Nellyontheland 4 года назад +11

      @@miko57wang it's more to do with resin forcing itself in to the bubble cavity. When the actual bubble of air is pressurised then it begins to move and air likes to go up. The same can be said when the chamber de-pressurises! The air wants to move.
      Also, in a vacuum, if the bubbles are near the top the evacuation is faster than if deeper within, so my point is that I think that the the resin was close to set and the bubble was forced into a natural fissure in the setting liquid and set hard before it could leave the tank.

      You're absolutely incorrect. The cast was put in a pressure pot, a vessel that holds extreme pressure. The increased pressure forces bubbles to shrink to near invisible. If there was air in the die-cast model, it would have been forced in (along with a bit of resin), not pulled out.

    • @jeffhousen8968

      @@monkmayfair3487 correct, then you release the air pressure on the outside, and that inner bubble is just a little too big for the resin to handle...
      this is the downside of using a pressure pot when compared to vacuum, large pockets of air will shatter the piece when the outer pressure is released

    Wasn't sure about the reaction at first, but after it was finished... wow. Looks like some spatial anomaly is dragging the ship into subspace; it's a real "live-action" piece and you'll have people wondering how on earth you managed to get that effect. I'm wondering if there's some finish on the model that reacted when the resin cured, or perhaps the intricate detailing on the saucer section held tiny bubbles that tried to escape during the pressure-pot process? Maybe it needed stabilizing with a coat of resin before the pour? Either way, that's the kind of "mistake" I'd be happy with!

    5:00 The ship contained a small amount of air that tried to escape through a large volume of resin.
    The imperfection is the air trapped in the resin.
    If you make this again, you might try a smaller volume casting with the ship so the air can fully evacuate, prep and polish then cast that inside a larger volume casting to make up the size you need for the bottle.
    Excellent video.

    • @misinformedmarti

      Looked more like some water was trapped in there, possibly from the paint but who knows. The water boils as the resin heats up during hardening, and steam expansion is absurdly large (a factor of 1700 to 1). He got the same effect when he tried to capture water drops in resin in another video.

      Laceykat66 ...it is likely not a "solid" diecast piece. Most likey, it is two diecast parts, much like diecast cars, that are bonded together in some manner, thereby leaving a sizable air pocket within the model. So much so, that it is unable to escape, or be compressed in, the resin as it cured. The pressure in the tank will compress that air but because of its size, it tries to escape from the model but is trapped in the resin. After thinking about this, I believe a possible solution would be to vibrate the mold while the resin is still liquid, before putting it in the pressure pot. A similar technique is used in the construction industry, when large volumes of concrete are poured. They literally insert large vibrators into the concrete to vibrate out the air bubbles before the cement cures... I'm fairly certain this method would work, with the right amount of vibration applied...

    • @Laceykat66
      @Laceykat66 4 года назад +6

      @@Quickened1 I did not think of them being bonded together. I figured they were just attached leaving room for the air to leak out as the resin flowed in BEFORE the pressure. Your way answers most of the questions. Thank you.

    • @Quickened1
      @Quickened1 4 года назад +5

      Laceykat66 ...you're welcome! Of course, my hypothesis is based almost solely on speculation. There are other possible causes for this anomaly, for instance, it could be a chemical reaction with the paint on the ship, or maybe it's due to the temperature differentiation between the ship and the resin during the curing process... Who knows, but it turned out pretty cool! Happy New Year btw...
