    This is definitely one of the best tutorials I've seen for propogating this plant. I stay in Namibia and our weather is blistering hot in summer with zero humidity. Winters are mild but also zero humidity. I keep them outdoors under a shady tree. The leaves of my one plant is 1.5 metres long so well overdue for propogating. Thank you for this very informative video, and for the follow up videos showing progress.

    Very very timely, I like this plant ... not much into cacti / succulent as I dont have much luck with them. I really want to try with this plant so I got a small pot (not common or cheap in SG). wanted to make it into hanging planter however now I realise perhaps not enough sun light coming thru... as it not doing well, some leaves got mushy (maybe also watering schedule). I managed to save 3 leaves so I m going to be mindful and this video will be most helpful! yay! Thanks again! PS always LOVE your ending (prelude) preview to next - so exciting!

      This plant is not that pest prone compared to others. I would say that scale is one that may affect this plant. Neem oil works great on them. Or you can also go the chemical route... 😀

    I recently bought a small zigzag cactus and have a few questions!
    1) when youre making the V-shaped cuttings, are you taking an entire length of one leaf to making several cuts?
    2) how big should the leaves be before you make cuttings? My plant is not as big as the mother plant you cut from and I'm worried I'll damage them if I cut them too young
    3) my plant looks like it came from 3 cuttings, each stemming a new longer leaf. On top of those longer leaves are buds that have already grown a few inches into even newer leaves, with one having aerial roots. Is there a way to detach the new growths and plant them individually?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад +5

      1) yes the v cuts came from one stem usually
      2) I would say 5-7 cm is a good length per cutting
      3) you can pluck the little growths off the main stem, they propagate really well😀

    Glad I found your video! I had to propagate my beloved Zig Zag cactus after a horrible gnat infestation (I couldn’t get rid of the gnats from this plant, so I took cuttings and threw the soil/roots out). Unfortunately I tried water propagation and most of my cuttings rotted. The ones that haven’t rotted have not rooted. I am going to try soil propagation with the ones that are still alive!any tips for future succulent water propagation?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад

      For gnats, I do have a video on that and swear by it so check it out. You can also drench the whole soil with neem solution a few times over the course of 2 weeks and it will kill all of them.
      Propagated plants adapt better to your environment so they should be stronger than before. Do check out my water propagation video for tips on increasing success rate. I had nearly 100% success rate with water propgating these. Do let them callous over for a few days before propagation though.

    I don't want to be rude but I really hope anyone that does video to this species name their exact I.D as
    Selenicereus anthonyanus
    Instead of Ricrac or zigzag or fishbone.
    Apparently the whole world now has this mix with Disocactus Anguluger.
    And it's the most horrifying experiences of collectors life.
    Both different looks, this has
    Sharp loop the other one has rounder loop.
    This has lots of root along the stem
    The other one not that severe
    This one has red bloom
    The other one white bloom
    This one has thicker stem
    The other one has thinner stem and glossy and protude mid rib.
    This one can stand direct sun
    The other one does not tolerate direct sun.
    This one grows like a weed
    The other one slow grower
    These 2 kind has been mix wrongly, something needs to be done about it.

The one that are rare is Epiphyllum or Disocactus Anguliger, they can only be found in western country and its limited but very high demand by most. Thrive in indoor condition.

    Thanks so much for this video! I noticed after 7 weeks, some of your outdoor ones were putting off new spouts that weren't as wide - more slender without the "zig zag." My very mature plant is doing the same, and I can't tell why. It's hanging in a south window and gets water every 7-10 days. Any ideas?

      It could be runners! Some of my other epiphytic plants put them off! I’ve also noticed it on my zig zags!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад

      They tend to get wider over time as the stem fattens. Give them good light and fertilize lightly and then wait 😀

    hi, Happy new year. This is Angela from Singapore. thank you for all the wonderful videos. I have two questions. I so admire your unique terracotta pots. They come in such interesting shapes. do the sellers ship out of jarkata? also a botanical question. all the new growth on my anguliger are long and spindly (without the beautiful trademark zig zag) with lots of aerial roots. I wonder what i am doing wrong. Otherwise, the plant seems healthy. Just a bummer to have 6 long spindly rooty new fronds ... .

      Hello, usually sellers here dont ship overseas.. language barrier is one but exporting goods is extremely troublesome as Indonesia is not as open to trade as other developed nations.

    • @onlyplants

      Some times the new growth is a bit odd shaped but they eventually turn out ok. Give it some time?

    Hey Sean, great video! I just got this cactus. Do you think they can slowly acclamatise to direct sunlight? I live in South East Asia. I would like to hang it at my front yard, it gets direct sun from 2.30pm-4.30pm. Do you think it’ll be ok for this cactus?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад +3

      See if you can give it a bit of shade. I am pretty sure they turn red when sun stressed but dont have this experience. Also do introduce them slowly so they have time to acclimatize and you can decide to change if the plant start showing signs of stress

      @@onlyplants thanks Sean! Will try to transition it slowly and see whether it will adjust to some direct sun over time. Thanks for the advice!

    I think I let my ric rac cactus get too root bound and it's struggling. It is not a deep green any more. Looks anemic. I'm going to propagate from the original plant. How do you suggest I get is bright green back?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад +3

      I would recommend fertilising lightly and giving it good care, upsizing the pot helps too. And of course... propagation 😀

    I have one of these and 2 of the leaves are a bit wrinkly and another leaf is half brown but squishy on top. My question. Is can I cut the brown leaf completely off from the stalk or half off? And should I water for the wrinkly leave even though the majority of the other leaves look healthy

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Год назад

      You can take it half off. Mushy tips is sign of overwatering usually…

    • @onlyplants

      The wrinkly leaf could be a response to overwatering, but I cant be sure… do test the soil for moisture before watering
