  • This nine-minute presentation explains how the brain functions, as well as how it functions differently in people with mental illnesses. Originally developed as part of a Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama patch program called Change of Mind coordinated by ADMH's Office of Public Information & Community Relations, this presentation is relevant for people of all ages who want to learn more about mental illness. Understanding the Biology of Mental Illness seeks to educate, as well as heighten awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with mental illnesses. It also serves to provide clear, factual information about mental illness, its causes, ways to address it and recovery, in order to reduce stigma against people with mental illnesses.

    I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my RUclips channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. 💙❤

    Causes of mental illness are certainly not limited to damage, infection, and genetics. First, genetics can only be used to infer a person's heightened or lowered susceptibility to a certain type of mental illness. Second, in explaining mental illness with only a biological lens, we miss the most important causes of mental illness which are major events, societal pressures, stress, etc. These things don't cause "damage" to the brain, per se. The brain does change biologically, but is it damage or is it a coping mechanism? Take PTSD, if someone is exposed to violent trauma, don't you think the brain would change in a way to be able to process ongoing violence and stress? Is that damage? Or just an abnormality when they return to a relatively peaceful or uneventful way of life?

      The effect of mental illness exists. With mental illness, your brain is damaged when something is abnormal. For example, if you have anxiety, your brain is damaged in the sense that fear is there even when it’s unnecessary. In some cases with mental illness, your emotions become dull and you don’t experience happiness the same way you did before.

      Trauma (any event that exceeds the capacity for that person's nervous system to handle, if it happens prenatally (stressed mother, nutrition, etc.), and the emotional regulatory centers are in the right hemisphere, which develops in about 6 mos. If nobody consistently provides regulation for the newborn, it will develop an impaired but still plastic ability to emotionally regulate. Dr.s Allan Schore and Bruce Perry are on YT discussing the field of Interpersonal Neurobiology; "The first 1000 days" is a good watch. We know better than this, and it disturbs me that this incorrect and incomplete crap is dished out by a state agency?! C-PTSD is an epidemic, and neglect (emotional) is the true destructive force due to its seeming invisibility. When you've experienced it, you tend to quite sadly good at spotting it. Yes, it changes the brain, but neuroplasticity says that we can heal. The biological and genetic cop-out is appalling.

      That's true. However, to quote Dave Hunt, mental illness is usually a moral or spiritual problem. He made plenty of enlightening videos on mental illness from a Biblical perspective. "Mental Illness: A Demonic Deception" on Daughter of Virtue's channel is also a good video to watch.

    I've never heard of a psychiatrist or psychologist using PET scans to make a diagnosis. Nor do they measure neurotransmitter levels. Diagnoses are normally based on the patients' subjective reports of how they feel and their behavior pattern, which makes the diagnostic process very unscientific indeed. Pastor Dave Hunt had argued that the field of psychology is unscientific, and I agree with him.

    • @Kyrani99
      @Kyrani99 2 года назад +1

      The patient subjective report has merit but it is the psychiatrists subjective opinion that is used in diagnosis. This is the "me thinks sounds like" after the patients report can be wiped off of the table as delusional, especially if they complain of others in their life wanting to do them harm. This is why it is unscientific.

    PET imaging techniques and it's imagery do not help in selecting a drug or to guide the patient's treatment. It is useless in psychiatry. You can only use it in oncology, infections and some endocrine conditions of thyroid. Brain is far more advanced than PET scanning. Can you use it in the clinical setting to diagnose depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar etc and gauge the response with repeat PET scans? Absolutely not. Moroever the deficiency or excess of any of the serotonin, acetylcholine or dopamine has not yet been demonstrated or proved. You can give a very high dose of propranolol and control schizophrenia.

    Most importantly, we have to accept the current fact that we cannot pinpoint the causes of mental illness. We have to accept it and also the sufferes. In truth, every one of us are mentally unhealthy.

    This video makes the false assumption we live in a perfect non violent world where there is no more suffering, then the presumption mental illness can only be caused by a defective brain. This video is outright wrong and or very incomplete. I make the assertion anyone who is born in the insane hostile violent world with so much unnecessary suffering going on and is not mentally and emotionally negatively affected by their environment causing them to feel ill is either a Psychopath and or very unaware of the world they live in today. Isn't it interesting how those that ignore the suffering of others are so quick to try and diagnose us with some kind of mental illness. Nothing wrong with our brains, we just don't except that the suffering of others is acceptable sane behavior. #SanevsInsaneCampaign
