Love these tips! I filmed my first wedding less than 2 years ago. It was nerve racking but survived. Planning and having a structure really is wo helpful. The more you do it the more tricks you learn that works for you along the way
Exactly! It definitely can be stressful if you overthink it too much but just planning ahead and building a process that works for you is game changing! Thanks so much :)
You're so right on the static camera + a floating camera! This takes the pressure off one camera having to capture it all and provides all the coverage needed for the edit. The static camera captures a 3-shot of bride, groom and officiant during the ceremony, with the free-floating camera capturing reactions and over-the-shoulders of the bride and groom during the vows. 2 camera coverage is great during toast speeches as well.
I shot a wedding yesterday. I’m a novice with some but not much experience. Made some mistakes but was mostly happy with it. I find it hard knowing where to put cameras for the ceremony and the speeches. I had 2 locked off and was using one myself, panning around etc.
Thank you so much for these helpful tips. I’m a total noob to filming and wanting to learn all I can. I primarily photograph, weddings, sweet 15’s headshots, school portraits, family portraits , maternity and events. No I want to learn the video side and am super excited although am a lil clueless but I’ll get there eventually 😂
*I am so into your video man thanks for all the teaching, I been doin weddings but just photos for like 4 years but I love more videos than photos so I decide to start doing videos and next mount is my first one ever so excited and nervous at the same time.*
Thanks for making this! Great tips! I"m filming a wedding this weekend and plan to have two cameras, one on a tripod with the audio for the ceremony, and the second on a gimbal. roaming around, but listening to you, I might just do handheld. The A74 does pretty good handheld at 120/60fps. No so great with panning or walking.
This is just what I needed! I loved everything about this video and will be rewatching a few times to get ready for my first ever wedding this April! I am brand new to cinematography and have never shot a wedding and also flying solo. A family member works for the vendor, and the photographer is a friend. So win win! I love shooting minimally. I usually use 35mm or 50mm prime lens. Would you recommend having a zoom lens? I would love to see an essential gear list if you'd share that. I know you mentioned 2 of everything. Like I said, I am just starting. I'm also wondering if I could get away using my Samsung S20 plus for 2nd camera on tripod? So many questions! Following and subscribed!
I’ve done just the one wedding and I was so nervous, tip number 2 stands out for me. If your just starting out like me this is excellent advice. I do my second wedding tomorrow 😊
Man this video is so helpful! I'm about to shoot my first wedding this weekend and tbh I know I do not have enough gear, yet. But the tips out of this video that do apply to me have definitely eased my mind, so thank you!!
Dude I am so stoked to hear that! I know those first wedding jitters can take hold but as long as you take in the moment, do your best and have fun, at the end of the day thats all you can do! Hope it goes well and you have fun doing it!
My teacher has asked me to film her sons wedding and i'm freaking out, i'm a good film student but a wedding is different from a short rom com film. this video is helping me a lit. thank you.
shooting my first wedding tomorrow and I have the R6 aswell. Two questions, do you recommend using IBIS for video? Also, should I shoot in CLOG? Great video
Shooting my first wedding in 2 months and my anxiety is building by the day. This video helped a ton. Will probably watch 150x more leading up to it! 😂
Like many others, I’m new to wedding videos and your tips were super helpful. Any advice on positioning for the ceremony if you only have 1 camera (to be able to capture bride and grooms faces, and not the back of 1 head)?
Thanks so much I’m so glad they helped! Work with the photographer and don’t be afraid to bounce around. Film in 60 FPS, make sure your shutter is double your frame rate (1/120), capture 3-4 seconds of the bride entering, rotate quickly to capture 3-4 seconds of the groom, reposition to the center after the bride and dad make their way up. For vows, I make sure to focus on the person speaking. Also a zoom lens will be your best friend here
Thanks so much! Great question, it’s mostly trial and error but I’ve found it’s easier to match the R6 when using c-log or c-log 3. If you shoot in standard or neutral you may have a tough time removing contrast or that “digital look” the R6 leans more towards magenta/reds and c100 leans more towards green. So just finding the balance there takes some trial and error. Also when filming you wanna try your best to match white balance and exposure in cam. Hope that helps!
I’m shooting my first wedding this weekend. When you say establish a plan is there a good set of shots you make sure you cross off during each period of the wedding day?
Hi, Nice work ! May I ask you whether you talked to your customers in regards to where they watch the video you are creating for them ? On RUclips ? or just inserting to USB to TV ? Or other ways ? Thank you!
I need your help badly I’m stressing now just starting to do videography with the Sony a6100 I’ve already got 2weddings may7th and and July 2nd I’m so nervous I own a PhotoBooth business so ppl associate me with a photographer and videographer so I bought a camera and the rokinon 24mm t1.5 I’m learning but watching all these videos just stresses me more lol
Before the magical days of Image Stabilization, yes. I’ve been filming weddings for 11 years so I started out with using monopods and the Glidecam to get steady footage.
Shooting my first wedding next weekend and this was really helpful! I’m thinking my 24-240 lens could help me get everything I need honestly. If you were only going to use one camera and one lense what would you go with?
@@WaywardNorth I had the same thought, however, I love getting extreme closeups in general and especially of emotional moments and I feel like I’ll need to get pretty close to them with my 24-70 and I didn’t want to get that close to not disturb the moment ya know?
One of the things I worry about shooting by myself is needing to set up for one part like the ceremony but also need to go to a different location to video the bride and groom, or family pictures, or prep, or needing to setup for the reception but pictures going on. Do you setup cameras for the ceremony and leave them up unattended to go off and do other video shoots? I’m worried if the bride runs late, and I go off an take some videos, I wont have time to setup for the ceremony. And I don’t want to setup my camera angles and walk away either.
Totally valid fears! This is where it is good to be on the same page with the planner so they know your needs for video. Another good rule of thumb is to always focus on the moments first and setup later. Or if you have time to get to the venue early, have your tripods and lights ready to go so when you get to that part of the day everything is ready. But the moments always come first.
Heya i'm planning to invest some gear for my own projects, mostly wedding / any related events. I'm just wondering would it be better to have fixed lenses or should I invest in Lenses like Tamron 28-75mm/17-70mm? I mean I have some friends who recommended these two tamron, its pretty much like a must have for every wedding events they said. but of course the visual won't be as great as fixed lesnes. What's your personal opinion in terms of investing lenses?
Lenses are critical to developing your wedding film style. So choosing the right ones can be a complicated process but a good rule of thumb is fixed lenses/primes will get you a more shallow depth of field which has a tendency to look better/more cinematic. Zoom lenses are useful tools that help you cover more ground on a wedding day, versatile, the downside is you lose some depth in your image but it’s really all about your composition and how you frame your images that can make it or break it. Personally I love both for a variety of reasons. I also have both because I’ve just accumulated gear over the years. For now I would recommend something like the 28-75 as long as it is at-least 2.8. The 24-70 Sigma is my go to
I would film in 4K on the Canon R6. 24 fps or 60 fps. I prefer 60 but you will need to make sure your shutter is double your frame rate at 1/120. And just because of long recording times in this mode as it is prone to overheating. 4K at 24 FPS would probably be a safe route with this camera but if you wanted slow mo capability I would recommend 60
Having to watch this twice, or more, as the lyrics in the backing tracks keep distracting me. As I'm working a friends wedding as a solo shooter (my other half is going to be an assistant on the day and if she feels comfortable and I give her a crash course for the camera, she might be a 2nd for the ceremony), all the information I can get is worth getting.
@@WaywardNorth I agree, the vocals in the music is way too distracting but please don't add some random Tropical House track like everyone else either. Soft piano/light Jazz would be perfect.
I’m shooting my first wedding next week. I’m was a bit scared and overthinking everything but watching this made me know I could do this!
