St. Mary's was built by and for the city's merchants and citizens, while the Cathedral belonged to the Prince-Bishop of Lübeck, whose long forgotten diocese and state within the Holy Roman Empire consisted of the cathedral, a few streets around it and an area that largely was what is now the main part of the Landkreis, county, of Ostholstein. The capital was Eutin with its castle.
Hi Christian, nice to read something from you again! That also makes sense because of how St Mary‘s is situated in the centre. I would like to visit Eutin, too.
Eutin is a very pretty little town. The castle is open to the public as a museum. After the reformation the diocese of Lübeck became known as the "Fürstbistum" or "Herzogtum Lübeck". The rulers were always from a sideline of the Danish royal family, the House of Oldenburg. That German noble family had been offered the Danish throne in the 15th century after a very turbulent period in Danish history. The Danish rulers held the titles of Dukes of Holstein and Dukes of Schleswig as well until 1866. That Dukedom of Oldenburg, after 1815 Granddukedom of Oldenburg, continued to exist independently from Denmark, got a republican constitution after 1918 and is now a part of Lower Saxony. It is one of the more colourful aspects of German history and its federal structure that this "Dukedom of Lübeck" belonged to the Granddukedom of Oldenburg from 1815 until the 1930s. Lübeck (except for the cathedral and that handful of streets around it) remained a free or independent town like Hamburg and Bremen until the same time. The nazis had already stripped the German member states, the "Länder" from all their real authority and superimposed the reign of their party with its own hierarchy over them. They then ruled that Lübeck became a part of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein, The ex-Dukedom of Lübeck became a part of Schleswig-Holstein as well, and the city of Altona changed hands from Schleswig-Holstein to Hamburg. You may still find people in Lübeck who mourn after their lost "independence". Well, even Bremen with its roughly half a million inhabitants struggles to finance itself as a city-state. Lübeck has about a third of that population and has by no means enough economical power to be a state of its own.

Thank you, Schoppi! Yes, Lübeck astounded me! I wasn’t expecting such an place. I completely agree with you. Greetings from Bavaria and thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated.
It was just a question of time for this channel to hit the "big ones" in Germany. Lübeck is a pretty well known town with many beautiful buildings. But i'm not afraid this channel will turn into a "tourist attraction" one, as just the district i grew up in has at least a dozen chappels and churches hidden in the country side, worth being presented by Lauren.
Is Lübeck a big one? I didn’t even know! 🤦🏻♀️ I’m sure that anyone looking for a touristy video will be disappointed if they watch this, but this is how I felt when I was there, so you‘re quite right. St Marys the greatest brickchurch and highest Brick vault 38,5m in the world two 125m towers the Mother of the german Brickstone gotik. Model of 70 churches in the Baltic Sea region. Until the Cologne Cathedral was completed, it was the tallest double-tower facade in the world and lasted for over 500 years. She built the largest ships in the Middle Ages and early modern times, the most famous of which were the Angel, Eagle and Jesus of Lübeck. The St. Mary's Church was completed in 1350. Lübeck was actually the city of 8 towers. The monastery Maria Magdalena or the castle monastery was also an almost 100 m high tower but was demolished in the 1900s due to dilapidation. The roof of the Holstentor is made of old German slate

Congrats for 1k, rising slowly but steadily. While you deserve more than that I think you can be reassured, that compared to other RUclipsrs, those who like your videos will be long-time subscribers instead of those who hop on / off. Watching this video was somehow special, I had a strange feeling that I couldn't even explain at first. So I watched it a second time and a third time. I don't know how to describe it exactly, but I think it was actually about the people that were in the scenery from time to time. If they hadn't been there, it would have felt more like a trip down memory lane with the background music that matched. You could dream about how people used to live there and expect a horse-drawn carriage from the Middle Ages instead of cars. 👍
Ah, now you understand why I try not to film people... they intrude on my dream / time travelling. Thank you, Opa Andre, for your kind and encouraging words, which really do keep my spirits up. Sometimes I think that if I don´t become more - kind of commercial - then the channel has no real future But, unfortunately, I have never been good at doing things just for money rather than also for expression or deeper communication. I just can´t sustain it, and although it is frustrating, I do think that there are some people who are glad that there are people like me, and that keeps me feeling like I have a place in the world.

I actually always have in the back of my mind that people may want to practise their English, as I improved my German and Italian by watching RUclips videos, so I am delighted to read your comment - and definitely go to Lübeck, surprise your wife with a lovely trip!
A beautiful video and a beautiful and historic city. Lübeck is the Queen of the Hanseatic League and always will be. Greetings from Oldenburg.
I have lots of smaller places coming up, and keep those suggestions coming, Peter! I‘m never going to be a “what’s up guys? Here’s the best Bratwurst” channel 😝
@@LaureninGermany ... and exactly that is why people subscribe to your channel.
She was the Queen off Hanseartyc citys
Greatins from Lübeck
In name and also in character! Greetings back to wonderful Lübeck!
I must go back with more time, thanks.
i can vaguely imagine which amounts of efford went into all these bricks and tiles. there is a documentary about "historische Feldbrandziegelei"... so much time and so many hands😮
I marvel at it. It‘s truly astonishing that these buildings were built.
Beautiful gorgeous view & scenery definitely makes me want to visit for sure & Congrats 1K Subs 🙂👍❤️🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!!! I was so excited and touched! It was an incredible place to celebrate the honor, too!
Bergen, Norway, is also a hanseatic city.
Yes! I wanted to go there, but Storm Hans made me drive differently. Next time! And Edvard Grieg‘s house, too.
Das war sooooooo schön zum Träumen.
Diese schönen Bauwerke in unterschiedlichen Baustilen. 😌
Lt.
;) @@LaureninGermany
Have you seenBergen(Norway), it was linked the Hanse, in Norway called 'Hansa'. One more think , I like to add :Thomas Mann's novel 'Die Boddenbrooks'speiles the time of the Hanse very well, I think.
Thanks for that tip, I‘ll read it, I‘m very interested in the Hanse time.
I wanted to go to Bergen, but I had to change my plans because of Storm Hans last year. I hope to go next time, and to Grieg‘s house nearby.
@@LaureninGermany if you can get a video from the slow TV program that NRK did as a celebration of Grieg in 2018(?). They broadcasted opus after opus, it was great😃 and Bergen and the composers both Grieg and Johan Halvorsen has inspired Lucinda Riley to write her novel 'Storm Sister'of the '7Sisters' series😀
Wonderful, I´ll look for it, thank you!
Lübeck , the queen of the Hanse, has given the Lübische Recht as basis for so many constitutions and laws to many towns and counties around the balic sea up to Riga . they all incorporated this town law and some laws were only overruled in 1900 !
So long! I didn´t know that!
Ah, erwischt.

Emperor Charles IV said during his visit to Lübeck in 1375 that there were only 5 glories in his empire besides Pisa, Florence, Venice and Rome and the Imperial Free City of Lübeck
Wow, that‘s quite something. I am trying to imagine how many of the same buildings were there when he was, too.
How do you like Lübecker Marzipan?
I have not tried it yet! I was so sad, that the shop was already close- another good reason to go again!
