- Madonna dated Jean-Michel Basquiat who gifted her some of his paintings during their relationship. Triggered by their break up, Basquiat took back and destroyed the paintings. However, she still owns at least one drawing of his. After an early set back in her pursuit for a desirable art collection, Madonna went on to acquire a number of notable works. She has a collection rumored to be worth over $100 million.
In 1987, she purchased Fernand Legér’s "Les Deux Bicyclettes" (1944). In 2013, Madonna sold another Legér, "Trois Femmes à la Table Rouge (Three Women at the Red Table)," at Sotheby’s for $7.2 million. She donated the proceeds to her own Ray of Light Foundation.
According to an interview with Vanity Fair, Madonna boasted her extensive collection of Tamara de Lempicka paintings: "I have a ton of her paintings in New York," she said. "I have a Lempicka museum."
Madonna has a few Frida Kahlo paintings including "Self Portrait with Monkey" (1940) and "My Birth (1932)." one of the five paintings created by the artist while she was living in Detroit. She also owns a Picasso, purchasing Picasso’s 'Buste de Femme à la Frange" (1938) for $5 million at Christie's in 2000.

@@youknowimright1725 He relapsed after an attempt to get off heroin. Just two months before his death, Basquiat went to Maui to withdraw from drug use. He had also planned to go to the Ivory Coast for a ritual cleansing to rid him of his addiction on August 18, but he died six days prior.

Hearing Madonna in this interview, she really loved Basquiat.
I remember Madonna said Basquiat was her twin flame. They were both destined for greatness. I wonder if they ever made any art together. They had a bad breakup but I believe that she loved him. He still supported her after their split and I think that's why he still has a special place in her heart. She sponsored the first retrospective of his work at the Whitney in 1992. She also wrote a short essay on him for The Guardian prior to a show of his work at London's Serpentine Gallery in 1996.
She literally says in this interview that she loved him.

Totally right in your comment. But in our current world, economic conditions are so dire and money so VERY hard to obtain, that of course we all dream about once being friends with say, Picasso, and holding some of his pictures at home (when nobody knew him).

@@KellyDFlynn My source is Madonna herself. She confirmed he'll be included on Instagram Live in 2020. It was after she announced that she was making a biopic. Since then, she has shared her research and writing process with pictures of Basquiat on social media. Last year, she posted a video of the screenplay breakdown and you could see some of the scenes on Post-it notes. I saw a few scenes with Basquiat in his loft. She also read "M and Basquiat make love" from the screenplay.
I bet she doesn't mention her love of Adrenochrome.
It’s beautiful to hear the sincerity and wisdom in her voice. I think it’s always the right thing to do if a lover asks for their investment / property back. Why would you keep it? It would be tainted for me, if it meant so much to them, to regain it. It’s just so unfortunate to hear that Basquiat then defaced & destroyed it - being petty is toxic….jmo
This interview brought tears to my eyes. The emotional breakup, the destruction of the paintings, the loss on both sides, the futility, losing someone to addiction, losing yourself to addiction, you never ever get over the anger of losing someone to addiction. It stays with you your whole life. I never liked Madonna but this interview really touched my heart. Bless you, grrl. I am so sorry for all that you have lost on your journey.

I like the fact that Madonna keeps it 100% real that's the real reason why I left and broke up with the person that I was with too because they wouldn't stop drinking and I don't like being around alcoholics and drugs...
This is the first Madonna interview I've seen where she drops her persona. She must have really loved Basquiat.

I met someone was managed art galleries and artists for a living. If you were not made for it, and love it, dealing with artists is a 100% nightmare job!
I don't like the interviewer's philosophy on not allowing getting something back after a breakup. There are instances where people pretend to love someone just to get things from them, and in those cases they never deserved things in the first place and shouldn't own them.

The interviewer doesn't understand how drugs like heroin and coke have the power to create addiction. The people who do them are very aware of how much their family and friends love them but the addiction keeps driving them even though they want to stop. It's like cigarettes too, it's all just one big vicious cycle.

Basquiat would not find them valuable at all. His art was a true expression of himself and what he thought and felt. When Madonna ended the relationship, the art ceased to have meaning. This painting over them in black. He wanted to be heard. He wanted his art to bring change. An empath leads a hard life and sometimes they simply self destruct. His escape from pain cost him his life.
I am curious to what those paintings that Basquiat painted black over looked like… and if they still exist. It may be possible to use modern day tech to see beyond the layer of black paint he put on them.

He may not be very versed about the arts but at least he asked her about it. Not many interviewers ask her about Basquiat and she has a unique perspective as his former girlfriend.

She has done great things for their country.

I've watched and read so much about Madonna, and some about Basquiat. Nobody ever mentioned their relationship until Howard Stern brought it up. More evidence that Howard Stern is arguably the greatest interviewer in the history of radio.
Theyeve made a couple of movies about madonna and basquiat.

Her brother Christopher wrote a book, Life with My Sister Madonna, and he said she kept a small painting. A few months ago Madonna posted a picture of herself posing with a Basquiat drawing. It's the picture at 00:28. Maybe that's the painting Christopher was referring to.
What does buying a painting of someone she knew have to do with intelligence? You can hear it in her voice that she loved him very much. And your lack of commas, bad grammar, and spelling of "Weather" reflects how sharp you are.

You are confused. Madonna called him Jean Basquiat. Some of Basquiat's friends called him Jean instead of Jean-Michel. Sean was her ex-husband, Sean Penn. If Madonna said she loved Basquiat, who are you to invalidate her feelings? You don't know what she tried to do to help him. A few of his other girlfriends also said they broke up with him because of his drug addiction. He later made some attempts to go sober but he indulged in a dangerous lifestyle for years. It's difficult being in a relationship with a drug addict no matter your social status. I say this as an admirer of Basquiat's art. You can be inspired by his brilliance and still acknowledge his faults.

In the 1990s she spoke about having abortions and said it wasn't the right time. She didn't specify the men who had gotten her pregnant. Madonna was very career-driven. Her former boyfriend Andy Bird said she aborted their baby in November 1997 because of her upcoming Ray of Light album. Excluding the men she had her children with I've read she got pregnant by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jellybean Benitez, Sean Penn, Tony Ward and Andy Bird.
You are spreading gossip about a woman's reasoning for having an abortion. You don't know if she was pregnant by Basquiat. You don't know WHY she had ANY abortion. You are justifying gossiping about someone on a video where they talk about how painful it is to see someone they love die by heroin. @@nicolelittle6429 This information is from books about Madonna, not TMZ or a tabloid magazine. Madonna could have sued the authors of the biographies for slander but she did not. They did research and talked to many people who knew her personally. I know everything in those books is not factual, but Madonna confirmed that she had multiple abortions. I've also read the Basquiat biography A Quick Killing in Art, which mentions that a few of Basquiat's girlfriends had abortions. It is not farfetched to believe that Madonna was one of them. I did not state it as a fact, I simply wrote what I read since it's relevant to the video.
