As a Blazers fan, Chauncey should get as much slack as he needs. The team got blown up completely and this is a total rebuild. Bunch of young dudes figuring out the NBA game. Good luck!

And, not only that, but we also are a rebuilding team without an icon. We have icon candidates, but no leader yet. Is it Scoot, Sharpe, Advija, Ayton? 🤷 Who is the guy we're strategizing around? Only time will tell.

    • @lylewalker5681

Sort of a rough deal too, because usually how these things go during rebuilds is that the team resets when it’s clear that they’re getting ready to compete again, and then a new coach comes in and takes over. Best case scenario, Portland is looking at the playoffs in probably two or three years again, and by then I don’t know if ChaunceyChauncey is still gonna be a great option for the team.

Chauncey seems like a nice guy, but he’s not a good coach. No in game adjustments, and I still don’t know what his offensive strategy is.

@@Mike-se5wglook at the roster he has. Scoot was too inconsistent last season, and Shaedon Sharpe and Simons have to decide to be more aggressive on both ends of the court to set the example for the rest of the team. Hopefully Ayton plays like he did in Olympic qualifying.

The chatter from fans is mostly ignorance coupled with understandable disappointment with losing. Coaches too often get criticized for shit that is out of their hands. With Billups, I see a guy that has been given a horrible situation. At the same time, he's remained positive, players have shown improvement, they clearly respect him, and he's grown as well. I fear that Billups will do most of the heavy lifting and a few years from now another coach will get all of the praise for his hard work. As an Oregonian, love and respect you, Billups.

I've loved Chauncey since I was a kid. You're right, he has a great attitude and says all the right things. However, the team and players do not improve under him. The same guy will make the same mistake all season and it's never corrected.

    • @pdxgolfpro
      @pdxgolfpro Месяц назад +2

@@crazekananas Coach Pop of the Spurs had nearly the same record as the Blazers the last 2 seasons. Does that make coach Pop a bad coach? Blazers had the 3rd most games lost to injury last year while playing more rookies in more minutes than any team in NBA history, as well as more starting lineups than any other team. How is that conducive to winning or improving anything? Chauncey can only do so much. He's not a miracle worker.

Blazer faithful since ‘76. I love round ball above every other sport except bicycle racing. Great interview.
My interest in NBA play evolved when Dame left as I set the scoreboard aside and am trying to understand the things that coaches watch and how teams succeed or fail play by play often due to the tiniest variation in execution on both ends. My idol is Lamar Herd who sees inside the game with so much savvy and insight that he inspires me to keep studying. The experts like you guys have given me an entirely new world of enjoyment in hoops. That raised my commitment as a Chauncy supporter too.

Chauncey: I hope someone sees this and passes it on to you. I'm much older than you. About the way you're older than your young players. If you're truly all about pride, then it's time to have a heart to heart with Jerami. He played 34 minutes a night and averaged 3.5 rebounds. That unacceptable for a forward playing at the vet minimum getting that many minutes. But for a guy making $160 Million on a 5 year contract?? If you keep tolerating that, then STFU about "I'm all about pride" It's an embarrassing amount of boards for your "power forward" and if you tolerate that, that's on you.
You can't "will" a guy who scores 4 points a game to score 24 points a game.
But you can "will" a power forward playing 34 minutes a night to average 7 rebounds. Jerami grabs an AVERAGE of just 3.5.
Coach: that's not acceptable and that's on you.
Take this advice from an older guy: If you accept it, expect it.

Poetic, in a way as a Blazers fan. That said, you can just read the comments pointing out the stark difference between Chauncey talking about the Blazers versus everything else to gather my take on him and this team as it stands, and my 3 or 4 replies on the comments here (the only ones on default sort total around 20 right now). Not going to parrot my usual spiel. I will say this though - I do not hate Chauncey as a coach at all unlike many fans, but I don't like him as one either. I loved Billups as a Piston but he wasn't ready to be a HC. A young team that, as he says, "can't do what he's teaching" can still be put into a fast paced system (or at least A system period) and a scrappy, pressuring defense. You can always go hard on that end. He hasn't instilled that.
The one thing I will give him is he's a likeable guy by his players. As a strategist/tactician, he's not the guy.

That way, each team can keep a veteran on the roster to help guide the young guys. Yes, the elite teams might will find quality vets who will sign to play on a contender. While the lesser or rebuilding teams will be able to keep a vet on the end of the bench and in the locker room.

Too many better players available as usual just like last year. Scoot was all hype, Thompson is a better player by far. Edey dominated college basketball and the title game against DC. The Huskies won because of Castle. How do the Blazers justify passing on a guy that dominated in college by taking a guy that didn't come close and was just big that can block shots. That is all this guy can do. It was scoot first year give him a break, he showed flashes he could be really good. Clingan is way better than edey at defense, screening, playmaking, passing and he has a higher ceiling. I won’t disagree that ownership has been terrible but the front office has did a solid job in the rebuild so far. Billups is not that good of a coach, people seem to forget when he got a playoff level squad he couldn’t win with them being the 2023 blazers. @@pdxgolfpro you got the wrong year not the 2022 season the next season when we acquired GP2, jerami, Matisse, and Josh hart that team was was at worst a 10 seed which is still a play in team but we could’ve got the 6-8 seed.

@@ayeenali7962 You mean the year the best free agent we could get was GP2 and he didn't play but a handful of games and the rest of our bench was crap? Guys like Arcidiacano, Greg Brown, Drew Eubanks, Shaq Harrison, Keon Johnson, Kevin Knox, Skylar Mays, Justin Manaya, Cam Reddish, Jabari Walker, Trendon Watford, Nate Williams, and Justin Winslow who didn't play most of that year? That year, that Dame at the end of the season was begging for more depth and veteran bench players? Yeah sorry that was not a very complete team either. Grant and Thybulle were not going to make up for that team. Other than about 6 man rotation it was a complete dumpster fire.

I call cap on the "young team/no veterans" thing. Ayton, Grant, Thybulle, Simons, Brogdon, Rob Williams are all vets. Rob only played 6 games but the other 5 is still a lot. And when Billups took over we had Dame, CJ, Powell, Nurk, Nance, McLemore, Winslow, Josh Hart, and other vets with maybe one rookie and still had one of the worst seasons we've ever had. He just wasn't a capable coach. He might make that jump one day like Mike Brown has but he's not there yet.

Chauncey seems like a good dude and his playing resume speaks for itself. But it’s obvious he has a lot to learn about coaching still and should probably be an assistant for a couple years

Send Chauncey somewhere else please, he sounds so defeated when talking about the blazers. His first mention of Donovan Clingan is "The big kid"... He talks about having to "Find the beauty" in not winning, as if he was put in the most negative situation ever and has to struggle to find some positivity. He claimed himself to be "The vet" of the team like we didn't have Malcom Brogdan who was actively coaching and providing the veteran presence needed for younger guys to excel. Sure, we're a team team that is losing a lot, but Chauncey is acting like he's on a moral high ground and he's just doing his best to stay positive and find the beauty in mediocrity. Nobody on the team wants to give it their all to a coach who doesn't care.

lol speaking of annoying fans. How does someone listen to a 30 min impromptu podcast of a guy he doesn’t know, chopping it up with one of his best friends and leave knowing his intentions and dedication for his team? He’s not happy enough about losing for 4 years? 🤦‍♂️

I never claimed to know him personally I just have to go off the way he answers the questions. He's been the coach for two years by the way, not sure where you got 4.

@@ImmaTigerBro Yeah for sure, especially since he perks right up and talks with far more energy, excitement and speed speaking about everything else outside the Blazers, and has engaged matching body language.. He talks so slow, quiet, and even his body language is detached when talking about the Blazers and our guys.

Im a Heat fan since 93, organizations build culture w/ consistency & dedication to core characteristics. Blazers should let Billups build up some culture there cuz they been a mediocre franchise the last 2+ decades.

Nobody on that team could do anything with Steph. He’s a top 10 player of all time for a reason. That boy has 4 rings in the most “skilled” era ever. Idc about what you say. KD teamed up with a ton of stars, but he won with G-state. Bron has had a ton of help and lost more than he’s won. There have been plenty of can’t miss big 3s since 2010. The constant was G-state. Steph is an S tier player in a sport where there are less than 25 of them in history.

Hard to compare eras because the game and officiating has changed. Pistons would have been able to be physical and dominate the Warriors in the mid-2000s but in 2016 rules...Pistons probably would have all fouled out and Warriors would have wiped the floor with them.
