      How to make a million pounds: Start with 50 million pounds, then buy a farm.
      Farming is hard. The work is hard. The money is hard to come by.

    • @jwrosenbury
      @jwrosenbury 3 года назад +33

      @@wilkas159 The tractor might not be too big. A thousand acres is a largish farm. Depending on how much of it is plowable, he might need something that big.
      He will also need smaller tractors and 4x4s and stuff. But if he's mostly mono-cropping, he needs a big tractor.
      The show makes Clarkson out to be a clown, but he seems to have a handle on things.
      He'll still lose money. Farming is both physically and mentally hard. One almost has to be born into it. But he can afford to hire good people and lose money.

      You're right. I detest farms and hope we soon move to a world where cultured meat and similar technologies remove the need for farms to exist, with their extraordinary levels of pollution and use of land that could be returned to nature. However, much though the agricultural industry itself has a lot of problems, there's no doubting the passion a lot of people working in agriculture have, and I think the show did a great job of showing that. And of course Clarkson's antics can make anything fun to watch. Genuinely enjoyed watching it.

      @Mantvydas Wow, that's the first time I hear I'm a vegan. I should probably throw away the leftovers of yesterday's shepherd's pie that's in my fridge then...
      I eat a lot of meat, but there's no denying that the way we're currently producing it is horribly outdated and creates the kind of emissions that force other industries to take drastic action to counterbalance agriculture, which can seemingly get away with everything because people think it looks idyllic... But let's be honest, 19th century cotton mills with small children scampering about is also an idyllic image, but it's better for all concerned that we've moved on from that. The same is true for agriculture; it's an industry that's on its last legs, and once it's dead we'll all be able to enjoy more nature while eating lovely cultured steak that didn't put out nearly as much methane, carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds in its creation. It's just better all-around.
      I don't really get the instinct to see everybody who wants this world to get a bit better as a vegan tree-hugger.

      I wonder if Jeremy actually has made money from the show so far. The farming equipment, permissions, renting diggers every episode or other heavy machinery, building a shop, buying sheep etc etc I'm sure it has cost him a fortune. For sure with farming alone he'd never break even with what he's spent. Unless that's counted as expenses for the show of course.

    I've watched the whole series twice so far and I love it. The satisfaction farmers must feel at the end of a successful harvest must be awesome. The Lamborghini was completely on brand and I would not have expected any less from Jeremy. The concern for other farmers gives hope for mankind. Lisa did a great job in the store. I would've been completely overwhelmed. Loved seeing the Bentley again! I'm also struck by how tall everyone is. Must be quite a new experience for Jeremy not to have a massive crick in his neck by the end of the day. :D

    Seen two episodes so far and I'm spacing them out from now on as I want to prolong the pleasure of what is a cracking show. In between laughing like a drain (you just knew he was gonna give himself an electric shock in Episode 2, not unlike knowing that Clouseau was still going to stick his finger in that light socket) I actually have been learning a lot about how farmers operate under the most trying conditions. With an average age of 59, they're the backbone of the country and close to becoming a dying breed. Oh, and Kaleb and the guy who builds walls and who is clearly Stanley Unwin's love child definitely deserve a show of their own. Simply epic....

    Clarkson has his detractors, and in some circumstances when he's doing stupid things in expensive cars, I'm one of them. But this show about his farm is a triumph. I learned more about the perils of farming and farm equipment than I ever knew before, and I live in the country (Ontario). He's sincere about the parlous state of farming in the UK today, the plight of farmers and the burdens under which they have to operate. It's easy to say, "well let them do something else", but the vast (shrinking) majority are born to it, and know nothing else. Clarkson understands very well that through large incomes from other sources he's well insulated from the day-to-day financial woes of farming, and can bear the losses, but despite his know-it-all attitude he quickly realises he needed professional help and got it from an entertaining group of people. I very much look forward to season two.
