You were a great boss, and you're a wonderful speaker.

This sheds light on just how absurd our drug policies are where some of the most destructive substances are available at your corner shop or from your doctor whereas potentially transformative life enhancing plant based medicines are outlawed with absolutely no research or valid justification.

chris mcaulay The study is not a "stand alone" study...and provides awareness of the need for more study (with larger variables and parameters) to provide useable information and recommendations. There has been research regarding psychedelic drugs....and this study would have to be assimilated with the larger body of knowledge....and with hopefully further study and research as well. This is not a recommendation for the public to experiment on their own. ~RED ☮♥♫

blondwiththewind yes I agree, I think part of the problem with psychedelics is peoples perception, either of the substances themselves or their own minds. The taboo surrounding psychedelics and the problem regarding bad trips is obviously a cause for concern. And obviously there are some people who may be more susceptible to bad trips or who have irrational fears surrounding the whole thing. If we could understand that then we could know who would benefit from there use. Intention for use is also critical, if they are used as tools for transforming how people relate to each other and how they perceive themselves and their relationship to the planet... that imo is how they should be used.

      chris mcaulay
Thanks for your reply. Yes...I agree with what you are saying as well. I do believe that this study is (as I mentioned) not a "stand alone" study...and more credible study needs to be accomplished before determining proper use.
Your criteria is good suggestion for a starting point, I think...my concern is that drugs of ANY sort should be discouraged as "entertainment" or "recreation". Better to develop self-esteem, real-world coping skills, and productive/enjoyable activities and interests for recreation. Too often I have heard people say they "only use drugs recreationally"...and sooner or later it follows that there is a physical and/or mental/emotional dependence on them: along with behavior patterns that create losses for them, and other people.
I do admit I am cautious as I DO remember when LSD was new: and I remember the reports of bad trips...the speculation that violent crime increases may have been concurrent with its use...deaths and injuries due to behaviors while under its influence...and some people have maintained that they have had permanent issues related to possible brain changes after having taken LSD.
I think we need to be very careful to remember that this study was very well controlled....and the sample of volunteers that participated in it were exemplary candidates. One does wonder that if the participants had not been gifted with the capabilities and characteristics that were listed: the outcomes may have been very different.
I feel very strongly that much caution should be used before more advocacy to make LSD more available and accepted; and safety should be the priority. I'm concerned that this may quite possibly become a "Pandora's Box" that we may regret having opened later on if we do not proceed with care and caution.
Thanks again for your contribution to this discussion.

Although I wouln't call it boring, but rather reaped of depth, colour and meaning. Somehow this kind of experience seems to bring the joy, meaning and values back as it gives you a frame of reference from beyond finite reality and therefore preserving them from this
    "flattening" relativism.

I think this is information sheds light on the New Age spiritual movement. Its ideals of self-revelation, oneness with all peoples and existence - most importantly that spirituality is simply a part of being human. Spirituality thru mystical experiences doesn't belong to a religion, practice or set of behaviors or beliefs, its a basic birthright. Dr Griffiths shows that our bodies are HARD WIRED for this! Psilocybins history goes back 11,000 years & is the most reliable method.

Does anyone else feel that the use of psilocybin mushrooms spiritually is a civil rights issue? Why are we being denied of our humanness? Our fascination as a self reflective species to alter our state of consciousness. To escape from the boring realm of reality to experience another plane of existence.

This question always come up for me when i see stuff about magic mushroom: Why do mushrooms contain psilocybin/Psilocin?
Usually anything found in nature, plants or animals has some important reason for occurring, like the venom in a spider as a defense measure or the vitamins in fruit as nutrition for animals that eat it.
psilocybin/Psilocin is not toxic so i think it has a good reason for being there and that reason is of great importance for humans and should be explored in my opinion.

Why have not I seen this before? I often see TED talks and I am very interested in psychedelic, especially mushrooms. Of course I have read about the results from just this research in lots of magazines and here on the web. But this video is completely gone past me?!

  • @THEfromkentucky

Actually, it is toxic to other animals. It's also toxic to us, but in significant amounts, far more than needed to experience the hallucinogenic side effects.

  • @THEfromkentucky
    @THEfromkentucky 11 лет назад

He's implying that it evolved there to be used by humans as a hallucinogen because, according to him, it isn't toxic. That simply isn't true. It evolved as a defense mechanism precisely because it is toxic. It just happened to also trigger other effects in our brains.

  • @4nks

It's not simply a civil rights issue, it's THE civil rights issue that most people are unfortunately too trapped in the shallow robotic reality of lower brain circuitry to comprehend. We need to use the scientific studies to educate people about this issue, spread the word far and wide, there is more to the human experience than junk food, materialism, and detrimental drugs with little or no benefit. There's no reason to live in fear, nature has always had the cures for our illnesses.

@debdonofrio Only on Alzheimer's patients who meet the main criteria of being open to using entheogens and are informed of the side effects.
To given an example of why I say this:
When the pure form of THC, Dronabinol or Marinol, was given to people suffering from either anorexia or refractory nausea and vomiting without informing them of the side effects, most of them found the hallucinogenic effects to be frightening and confusing.

  • @AmadeusD

It's about as toxic as breathing in most metropolitan cities. I don't think i've found a single credible report of Psilocybin toxicity alone causing hospitalization etc..
Psychological side-effects are where the problem is. Even then, incredibly rare and usually not too extreme.
I'd like to see anything at all to support the idea that Psilocybin evolved as a defense mechanism against anything. Its effect on humans actually causes us to harvest more mushrooms so has the opposite effect.

While this presentation provided new and important information....it also brings rise to further questions and the need for further studies (with different factors and parameters considered) to increase the larger body of knowledge....this study can not be considered a "stand alone" recommendation for use of psychedelic drugs. Why did the presenter not accept any input or questions from the audience? Why did this segment not include footage of the audience that was being filmed during this video? This was a controlled study....done with people who were highly functioning and with a history of adaptive behaviors and mind-sets...and no indicators of past drug abuse issues, con-current drug use, behavioral issues, or mal-adaptive thought patterns or histories. While the study emphasized the positive outcomes (that were sought via the post-experience questionnaire)...there was no indication that input regarding negative aspects of the experience were sought. I will admit that my caution and skepticism on this subject is enhanced by awareness of negative outcomes of psychedelic drug use in the past (especially during the sixties and seventies, and in studies done via the military and MK Ultra experimentation). There was no indication of potential hazards related to use in a poorly controlled and monitored setting, with individuals who were not as high-functioning as this somewhat homogeneous control group, with individuals with con-current drug use, or with pre-existing maladaptive behaviors or mind-set, or comparing the results with the history of deaths, injury, and criminal behavior associated with use of psychedelics. Neither was there consideration of the significance of this study related to individuals with previously diagnosed (or undiagnosed) underlying psychiatric issues or risk factors. No mention was made of the possibility of long-term brain changes or other long term health risks. I would strongly consider that if this study is not combined with the results of other studies, or future studies with a widened set of variables....there are many individuals who may incur risk if they consider ONLY the results of this study, and persons with a different set of behavioral and psychological background factors may incur different (and perhaps negative) risks and outcomes. I would also be interested in hearing more about the comparative experiences of those in the group who received the dose of ritalin (with or without simultaneous use of the psychedelic drug)...versus those who did not receive the ritalin, or who received only the psychedelics. My larger concerns are, of course, that the public in general may prematurely and inadviseably extrapolate this information and equate this one study with "permission or validation" to proceed with psychedelic drug experimentation of their own. There is much more to consider regarding this study as it relates to the larger body of knowledge. While the positive outcomes and potential applications of this study appear to be significant....there are also issues that were not considered, studied, or factored in to the overall results. Much more study would be necessary before this information becomes a "stand alone" recommendation for drug experimentation by the public.......and that is obviously a large concern for me. I would also be interested in participating on some level with further research....and I certainly would like to peruse and assimilate the subsequent outcomes of further study.
    Submitted with respect and appreciation.....
    LOVE AND PEACE!!! ~~RED ☮♥♫

blondwiththewind this study is 5 y.o. and some of your questions have already found answers.
Let me add, that psychedelics aren't for everybody, but the majority of facts say that it's a lot less harmful than other chemicals in human life.
if we add that proper conditions and guidance are crucial factors for success in sessions of use, then we need to reclaim their legal status that was violently changed.
Could you please space your texts for the sake of readability?

Dark shroom, the religious experience he is talking about is a series of criteria that are reported by mystics yogis shamans prophets etc throughout history and across cultures, those criteria are not concrete proof of religious experience just an intriguing correlation that one might deduce significance from. Think about how we define depression, a series of criteria reported by those claiming to be depressed which correlate.
