- The livestream starts with an introduction from Blanka Mazimela reflecting on his journey and where the destination of African music is for him. His grandmother then takes centre stage praise singing, calling on his ancestors to surround his aura with the spirit of enlightenment and progression on his journey. The opening song, Gcwanini ft. Korus & Sobantwana, sets the theme and intention behind the compilation and livestream within its 8 minute framing.
The story about Gcwanini is the channelling of Blanka’s late grandfather, uDingane. “I consider him the great Gcwanini because of my strong bond with him and how he was instrumental in me finding my purpose and realising the dream. If he was still alive, the song would still exist in the teachings and talks we’d have.” Now that “zithule iinkosi,” and he is resting in peace. His legacy lives on through the frequencies vibrating through the instrumentation.
IMBUYELO: HOMECOMING
“More than anything the biggest thing of going home is doing it in a place where my dad used to sit, where my grandfather used to sit and honouring them in an authentic way.”
It is the consistency from instrumentation to performance why the setting of the stage is, eKhaya Khulu, in Blanka’s ancestral home. “No matter where it is that I am going, it always has to start at home."
Blanka explains that, “If there is a project that I am starting or something that I feel is bigger than me, I always start at home, ebuHlanti, and speak to the elders. I let them know that I have these ambitions, this is what I am trying to do, can they please be the guide and see these things through. Then I go to the graves where my late grandmother, grandfather and uncles are resting and I do the same.”
Home is the direct link to all the things that we acquire and share. Home develops our pride, who we are, our thoughts, intellect and how we view and articulate the world. “The city gave me the lessons and skills I need to thrive in a technological economy. However, the wisdom to interpret these skills comes from home.” So what better place to premiere Africa Gets Physical Vol. 3 then to the people that know you from birth. Showcasing to the people who know you from day one so that they can be a part of highlighting growth. Through one another we can see how far we have come and how far we can go.
In the beginning when you have a dream, no one sees it like you see it. Elders usually look back to how the dream has grown you to the person that you are. Therefore, when you are going out into the world, what are you carrying in your hand? Blanka is carrying home wherever he goes.
“I say I am from eDutywa with pride. That is the place that really honed the skill, that gave me the ability to really dream big. I am a village boy that wants to make it on a global scale and I am carrying the whole village with me wherever I go.”
