Usually people assume Blackadder was killed on the charge of last episode. Actually, he was wounded, captured but released. He suffered much war trauma, that gave his speaking impairment as the known Mr. Bean.
He didn't, he saw the note after he shot the pigeon, so he couldn't have known about the attack Also tons of these missions were happening during ww1, if someone didn't attack, the entire war could be lost
