The first test pilot landed after the first flight, got out and walked to the lead engineer and said "You're not big enough, and there's not enough of you to get me back in that f*cking plane"

This is not the only aircraft with this problem. The Soviet TU-95 has four engines, each with a supersonic contra-rotating propeller. It is so loud that it is rumored that submarines can hear this aircraft while submerged. What’s weird is that this is not a prototype aircraft, the TU-95 made up the backbone of the Soviet bomber fleet for most of the Cold War, and is still in widespread service today; there was even an airliner version (which was just as loud).

I suppose for a bomber that works put of remote air bases and that will be picked up on radar long before the sound reaches the enemy, it would only serve as an inconvenience, but for a passenger liner operating in cities, that was probably a big reason why it never caught on in that role.

@@Slava18583 it was designed to drop nuclear weapons on American cities and to track submarines in the 1950s. Also, the noise is not so much a concern for the enemy, but for the aircraft’s own crew and the personnel of its airbases.

Back in the day jets were very slow to pick up speed. This was an attempt to try to have the pick up of a propeller with the speed of a jet. The Ryan Fireball was another notable attempt!

Not as loud as the "Screech" but when the Piaggio Avanti takes off some 15+ km from here, we can distinctly hear it.

I’m surprised its noisy flying wasn’t weaponized. Just continuously fly over enemy territory, especially at night to keep them awake would have had a helluva psychological impact.

It does matter to the pilots, who are exposed to noise levels comparable to a chainsaw throughout the entire flight.
