• Feudal Japanese vs Med...
Samurai were the military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan.
In Japanese, they are usually referred to as bushi or buke.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and were trained as officers in military tactics and grand strategy. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of then Japan's population, their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.
As aristocrats for centuries, samurai developed their own cultures that influenced Japanese culture as a whole. The culture associated with the samurai such as the tea ceremony, monochrome ink painting, rock gardens and poetry were adopted by warrior patrons throughout the centuries 1200-1600. These practices were adapted from the Chinese arts.
In general, samurai, aristocrats, and priests had a very high literacy rate in kanji. Recent studies have shown that literacy in kanji among other groups in society was somewhat higher than previously understood.
Some samurai had buke bunko, or "warrior library", a personal library that held texts on strategy, the science of warfare, and other documents that would have proved useful during the warring era of feudal Japan. One such library held 20,000 volumes. The upper class had Kuge bunko, or "family libraries", that held classics, Buddhist sacred texts, family histories, as well as genealogical records.
A samurai was usually named by combining one kanji from his father or grandfather and one new kanji. Samurai normally used only a small part of their total name.

Ha ha ha, thanks for saying I sounded cool, and apparently I didn't butcher the pronunciation nearly as much as I thought ^_^ Great to work with you mate and thanks for this truly excellent video on the battle of Sekigahara!
Japanese pronunciation is actually the easiest part of the whole language.
Shadiversity I really enjoyed your post on the comparison of Western and Eastern castles! I thought your pronunciation totally authentic!
My pleasure mate :D Until next time then :3
Meji restoration next?
What do you think of the movie by the same name of the battle which came out last year?
Doesn't matter if you like Japanese history,
it is a metatron video which makes it a good day
keep up the good work Raff
Arigato!
Another fun fact: Otani Yoshitsugu had leprosy and one time when drinking with other lords, a cup was passed around. Some pus from a wound leaked into the cup and Otani Yoshitsugu was very embarrassed. Ishida Mitsunari, however, still drank from the cup. This meant a lot to Yoshitsugu and this apparently made him respect Mitsunari more than any other lord.
He fought with all he had for Mitsunari at Sekigahara, despite being almost blind and unable to move on his own at that point in time.
cute
That's rather sweet, tbh
Don't forget the part where he transformed into a demon and started Miyamoto Musashi-ing people. Oh wait, that was Nioh
Yo that's the biggest L someone could willingly choose to do lmao imagine drinking leprosy puss 🤢
This was so great. Going to watch it again right away.
You and Shad are really spoiling us today... not that I'm complaining about that :-)
Cheers
Glad to hear that pal :)
That Dark Souls aesthetic.
Praise the sun
It actually really bothers me, because the metatron list it as royalty free music by Johannes Burlogh, and while I don’t think the metatron would’ve intentionally ripped it off, Johannes has literally taken privately owned music written for the game-which was written by Japanese composer Yuka Kitamura-without the slightest mention that this music isn’t theirs. Wtf. Kitamura is a brilliant composer and she deserves credit for her work.
@@harrycohen6308 Oh shit, I never noticed that. That's heccing bullshit.
Why didn't you use shogun 2 total war for the Visualization?
Btw your Samurai armour sets look kickass.
Thanks pal, and I will
I like the suggestion as well. Total War isn't 100% accurate to history on everything, but it's certainly serviceable.
Heck, they even used Total War games in other documentaries as well for their simulations.
Arent some of the visuals from Oda Nobunaga's Ambition? I love that game too
A damn great work. Congrats, this is some very high quality content.
Thank you very much!
I`ve been talked to by The Metatron himself!! I am humbled. People like you make youtube great
Video is about a Japanese battle. Beginning of the video starts with the dark souls 3 main theme which is a medieval European themed game .... Why must you do this to me? ._.
I STILL LOVE YOU METATRON
If it were up to me I would use that theme for literally everything, even a strawberry milkshake tutorial...wait... it is up to me...well then :3
Lol
It is a good song ...
Milkshake Souls - Prepare to Drink edition.
Hazardous 088 well dark souls is a Japanese video game so it's still fiting.
the illustrated enemy movements really helped with understanding the battle. thanks for making this!
YESSS
I actually just visited the Sekigahara Battlefield and have been doing a lot of research on this battle. I'm so glad you posted this, perfect timing for me!
I love everything you do about samurai history! Please keep that content coming :D
Added you to my subscriptions!!, thanks Shad
Really interesting, love the animation. And of course the images you chose; they are so detailed they have an almost photographic quality about them :))
A fascinating bit of history! I love Shad's pronunciation of "Sekigahara" and felt the need to wipe off my screen afterwards. LOL. The collaborative effort you had done with Shad was excellent, BTW. Your teaching and presentation styles blend well.
Actually one of the best videos I've watched in a while, I thank you.
I'm glad to hear that :)
I love this battle. I've loved it since I played Samurai warriors on the side of Mitsunari and got pretty upset knowing his fall. Great video, I love it.
amazing, i wish i could have watched this sooner, great video!
The collaboration video brought your channel to my attention.
Fascinating video, Metatron. Entertaining and informative as always. I also noticed a few images and soundssongs from my favourite games in here too.
This video is amazing dude, thanks for your work..
Thanks for video Metatron!
Hope to see more videos about Japanese battles and I really wanna know more about different types of troops that was used in battles!
Love the Nioh screenshots you implemented too. Great game. If you see this, I hope you can do a video next on the Sanada Maru fortification during the final war of the Sengoku period.
Great presentation, as usual.
Excellent! Good job!
Thanks for the video metatron. I actually just arrived in Japan Tokyo today a few hours ago and the sekigahara battlefield is on the list of places to visit
Just subscribed after seeing you on Shad's channel! I can see I am going to enjoy your channel very much, Cheers Metatron
Wow, i justed visited Sekighara two weeks ago. standing on top at Ishidas camp you could perfectly see and imagine how the troops had moved. Great Video! Greetings from 京都
YES! Instant like and favourite!!! After this I'm watching Shad's vid!!
Good to hear that :)
Metatron Funny enough, I've actually been looking up a ton of history on this exact subject lately, so this videos timing was perfect!
Your new videos are so cool
Amazing!
The nicest thing I was told today was that I'M a noble one!!
TomYawns this whole time I thought he was calling us number ones...
LMAO that's even better
Mr. Quattro is the noblest
Yeah nice and informative video :) i do like how uve shown the troops movements. Although i would recommend to start with the factions cause i do think it would be better understandable. But thumps Up! :)
“It’s over, Tokugawa! I have the high ground!”
Well instant like on this video
I've looked for videos on this ive been very unsatisfied with everything except this great job
So I had Dark Souls 3 running while wathcing this video, i went to shut it off because I was in the menu and wanted to hear whatever music you put in, turns out my game was muted and I was hearing the DS3 Menu Theme you put in :D
Excellent video
Dude I love your channel bro is so educational it's awesome bro it makes me think about 3000 years ago ancient Rome I long for it
Awesome video sir, it would be cool if you do a vid on the battle of okehazama eventually.
Hoping for more of these videos :3
Two great Metatron videos in one day? Outstanding! Keep up the good work!
I loved this video so much that I spent hours reading more about the history of this era...
Really awesome ❤️❤️
I'm very glad to hear this :)
You don't deserve your 232,000 subscribers at all... YOu deserve a million for the kind of content you produce. Awesome video, as always!
The best part of the Battle of Sekigahara was when Kelley made a giant skeleton yokai with the souks of 300 dead samurai.
Hey Metatron, I think it'd be super cool if you did a video/s on what weapon/s and armor you would choose if you were an adventurer in Skyrim or another RPG with monsters and what not.
Great job and congrats... im now officially a fan of yours...
Though the contents are great but would appreciate a more in depth prod on this battle or if you could share a reliable source of info..
Looking forward for more videos from you Metatron...
Cheers!
"a lot of people support him, but a lot of people support not supporting him."
Great video!!
Metatron, can you cover how the feudal systems of different parts of Europe might differ, for example England and Italy?
Yes and compare Europa's and Japan's overal political structure.
great video
I really loved this video, as usual! The only thing I wanna say is, maybe next time the informations about the lords involved, the country situation etc. should be given before you talk about the actual battle. It may help giving more context to the battle itself ^^
Thank you very much for the collaboration with Shad!
Could you also make a video on how traditional Japanese housing looked like?
Man Metatron you and Shad are really my two favourite historical channels on RUclips please never stop doing such amazing, interesting and entertaining stuff ^^
And if I can make a request: please do more of these great crossovers that would be insane 😍
Just keep up with what you are doing no matter what comes lads :D
Btw Raffael did you just use part of the Dark Souls 3 theme for the intro? 😃
Jajajaja men, you are a fucking genius. I love your videos. Good work and good luck!!!
Coming from Shad love this
Video was great! Just... too short! I could listen even more about this topic :) It would be wonderful if you analyzed other battles in similar way.
ive noticed a lot of videos are out regarding samurai weapons and armour, but very few about Chinese warfare. Seeing as total war: three kingdoms has been announced, I would like to know more about what the soldiers would have been using and the style of warfare. is this a topic you would consider covering?
Sure :)
yay
We need more of these
Absolutely love your content, mate! Have you ever considered doing a video on the Ikko Ikki 一向一揆, a peasant uprising that led to almost 80 years of autonomous peasant rule in Kaga and echizen. Arguably one of the earliest post Greek democracies in the world!
What would make this week's theme of Japanese history complete are the full series of Sengoku Jidai on Extra Credits History. I found them quite easy to understand and fun. And thanks for the video, Metatron.
Awesome.
Another majestic masterpiece! Congratulations! Metatron is the new Alberto Angela :-P
Machicolations. There, I said it.
... but what about Dragons? ;-P
Ah, history! So much more enjoyable watching your videos then reading history books.
That's the idea, so I'm glad to hear that
Like the Shad / Metatron collaboration - Like watching a dwarf and an elf discussing same subject matter ;)
Cooooooool :))))))))))))) great job ;)
Cheers pal :)
You guys seem like absolutely great friends haha
Attila The Khunt we are ;)
Constructive criticism here, the video feels messy to me, it's inconsistent with the maps and position of unit. Its very hard to follow imo. Look at baz battles (now kings and general) i can easily understand the battles through consistent map. Altho dont just copy his style, you got great style(later down below). And dont add so much "filler" preety pictures and switch it so fast. I get that it suppose to immerse you. And its a good thing, and it works. but dont put too much and switch between scenes so fast. In short i feel its very messy unstructured and confusing. But one thing i really like about your style is you wearing armor. It really immerses you into the video imo. This and your narrative style is your one of your biggest strength imo. Altho it feels very lonely with only you in it. Wonder if you can raise an army to record a footage of an army for a video ;) haha. Or a duel or something. Or maybe a general planning stuff with his vassal in a tent or something. It would be very cool to add some narrative to that shots and tell your content through these kind of shots would be amazing. Hope i dont too much hate from this comment but i really like your content and i wanna see you in your best potential. Oh and that gun and armor, oh fuckin hell they were BEAUTIFUL. @Metatron
I was about to comment the same thing. Using maps properly is incredibly important if you want people to understand the actual battle.
I have to agree here. I don't mind the maps, clips and animations but the whole thing was kinda disjointed. Resolving the battle first before actually setting anything up added to that greatly. I got names and numbers but I only vaguely understood who was who and who did what and more importantly why.
I'm sure if you are well versed in japanese history this is a none issue but for those people the video is also not as interesting because they probably knew the battle to begin with. I even knew a couple names but struggled to place them anywhere specific.
Seriously, too much editing, no conistency in of positions or forces or groups of people makes it really hard to follow... It's painful to watch this after watching invicta / baz's battles / kings and generals videos. we want a visual representation of how the engagements went not B-roll of yours truly cosplaying and a different shot every 3 seconds.
+William Adiputra At least you critize metatron in a good way
+Metatron You got to see this
Excellent use of DS music :D
Hey this is awesome.
Thank you!
Oh Madone! I have studied this SOOOO MANY times! However as I love S&T, I want your take on this important battle. I MISS MY TAIGAWA DRAMAS!!! I MISS NHK TV!!! DANG!
I LOVE educational videos.
Thanks for the information. I'm curious if you have any older videos that mention Gunsen and Tessen war fans. Just trying to find some additional material for a lesson plan I'm working on.
Japanese history, always fascinating and clear in its motivation. Like the art and architecture
Maybe next time you could also collab with Kings and Generals or BazBattles.
They have cool visuals and use military formation graphics to give a good oversight of the battle at any time.
Cool video anyways!
Not only was this an epic battle as far as battles go, but the political consequences were enormous! This battle solidified Tokugawa rule, and united Japan in a way it hadn't been united since the Heian Jidai.
Where did you get all of this awesome information. Is there anything primary sources that can back you up?
I don't know how many times I've read about, watched videos on and studied Sekigahara. I love this battle, it was such a pivotal moment in Japanese history, as was the assassination of Oda Nobunaga.
Great video! Praise the Sun!
Great video, I'd very much like to see more about Japanese history and the Sengoku era.
What would you recommend to learn more about this era's history? Is there any book or website that has all the important stuff?
what an interesting content.
What was the very first music used in the video? none of the music in the discription was it, the hymn playing with forboeding music? second great video and brief explanation of it all
I always enjoy a bit of history from someone who knows their stuff. RUclips should be more supportive of smaller educational channels like Metatron.
I'm reading a novel about Toyotomi Hideyoshi's life, and I really love it :D Dude had Speech 100.
5:30 WOW! You look gorgeous in that shot! XD
Anyway what about trying to use Shogun 2: Total War? :D
Thanks - great video. I heard that one of the crucial events of the battle was when one of the forces that had agreed to switch sides was wavering, so Tokugawa ordered a canon shot in front that force as a prompt, almost to say: 'come on then, are you in or out?' Did I hear that right, or was it a different battle?
Nice video
Interesting
Thanks!
My academic history studies have always centered on European history. After watching this video I am inspired to research more about Japanese history! Thanks to Metatron for another great video!
F*** YEA , YOU FINALLY MADE A VIDEO ON SEKIGIHAEA
Edit : *Sekigahara also could you make a video on the Shimazu Clan?
Lol a Drifters fan you must be.
Liked the vid, you could maybe animate the battles using the game total war shogun 2. I know it sounds weird to animate a docu with a game but ive seen it work before .
I just watched your collaboration video with Shad. It was awesome. Did Shad actually actually pronounce that right? That's pretty amazing if he did. You must have coached him quite a bit.
He did , and I didn't :)
For all of those interested about samurai history (Probably all of you) then i highly recommend reading 'The Samurai' by S.R. Turnbull, which looks at Samurai from their inception to their decline, featuring the Gempei War, Mongol Invasions, The Northern and Southern Courts Era, Sengoku Jidai and Hideyoshi's Korean War, it also goes into a fair amount of detail in the Battle of Sekigahara and the siege of Osaka Castle.
I supported the Western army as the side with more traditional values. I saw them as the faction that tried to keep the warriors traditions. And I was further attracted by the fact that there were characters like shimazu, Ukita, Sanada and Otani. These people still faught to the bitter end even when they saw themselves never winning. Specially the shimazu forward retreat cutting through tokugawas main army was awesome.
A tiny correction - The Battle began due to the charge of Ii Naomasa from the Eastern army. The honour originally belonged to Fukushima Masanori but Ieyasu nd Naomasa had the idea that the first charge should be led by a Loyal vassal of Tokugawa rather than one who was loyal to Hideyoshi. Naomasa pretended to inspect the enemy lines alongside Ieyasu's son and took advantage of his position to charge against the enemy
Could you do a video about Tokugawa Ieyasu's predecessor, Oda Nobunaga? As a background to the Battle of Sekigahara and Japanese unification
Great Video Metatron!! I found your channel about 4 days ago and I must say you have piqued interests I did not know I had. I have been absorbing lots of information ever since. I came across your vid called "English spelling - a bit mad, but perhaps the best system around." I am From Boston where the Glottal Stop is still often employed. Just learned that term from you. Yourself being a Linguist, do you have any pointers for teaching an 8 yr old girl the intricacies of spelling the English language. My child has wonderful command of the language as far as vocabulary and comprehension. It is just spelling and recognizing where to employ the rules when spelling and reading. I am a chef not a teacher but I do my best. She loves mathematics and is far above grade level there, which I believe is the key to learning myself. I will continue to watch your vids as they come out and ingest the rest of your catalog as time permits.
Thank You
As mostly stated in the video, the respected leader of the west had died, his son was in his early teens and couldnt yet command them. Not only that, but Toyotomi hat actually already defeated Tokugawa, and made him a vassal. However he did not live long enough to solidify his dynasty's hereditary shogunate, just as Oda had subdued nearly all of Japan just prior to his death. It is also somewhat inacurate to call it the "Western Army" they were just the rest of Toyotomi's vassals not loyal to Tokugawa, some were in fact from the East or South. And Ishuda was not the most powerful or prominent of them, just the favored of Toyotomi's son earning him little respect or legitimacy from the re rest of the army.
Not mentioned was that Tokugawa had sent a secondary force to lay siege to the castle of the Sannada clan. They were only truly loyal retainers of Ishuda, and forced to be entirely absent from the battle.
I visited Gifu Castle. Lots of interesting stuff there and related to what ended at that particular battle.
I might be a little late commenting this but would it be possible to get a video about a kusarigama, or perhaps just a kama, like about if they were ever actually used and if so when, or if they are just more like demonstration weaponos
Great video. I recently finished Miyamoto's Go Rin No Sho so this video made visualizing the battle timeline in history a bit easier. What books would you recommend for someone who is interested in Japanese battles and its military history? I am reading The Book Of Samurai and getting a better insight into their life and beliefs. Thanks again for your hard work.
Do you recommend Hagakure?
+Metatron Would love see you talk about more legendary figures or groups in Japanese history. Any chance you could discuss the shinsengumi group of warriors that exist in both Japanese history and pop culture?
Makes me want to play Kessen on the PS2 all over again.
Loved the Musashi fun fact. The Book of Five Rings was an interesting read. That man was legendary whether he fought at Sekigahara or not.
