This video hits hard! As someone born in 1999 I grew up with a lot of the stuff on this list. I still have my PS2 connected and ready to revisit some of my favourite childhood games like NFS Underground and Midnight Club 3
My goodness all the nostalgia that just hit me. Split screen multi-player was still around and hanging out all weekend with a friend to beat Gears of War because we rented it from blockbuster was a core gaming memory
Very nostalgic. I recall like half of those- mainly because I wasn't a PC gamer. MW2 back in the day was addictive since it was the first time I got to play online in 2010. Those start screens were epic on consoles too. GTA4 was the one I played the most back then, and there was always that time where I would try to see how long I could hold off the cops. Good times, good times.
I miss when startups and main menus were unique. There was something beautiful when starting up a ps2 or playing super Mario 64 and that main menu music would hit and you could feel how special everything felt.
Right? I remember being so disappointed when I launched Breath of the Wild for the first time and it was some empty soundless main menu. Urg so disappointing !
Made me feel like 12 years old again watching this video. The amazing beginning of mercenaries two, 910 songs from from Mission five, while finishing the complicated missions.
Going through that whole list had me smirking and tearing up but the moment you said Flash... I couldn't help but let out that satisfied groan from deep in my soul... like you just had a home meal after being gone for long time. Thats when the tears fell
This hit my nostalgia hard, you've pretty much nailed the early 2000 for gamers. I gotta add on playing DDR or other arcade games at an actual arcade whenever you have the chance once out of school. Good days...
I once spent an entire summer in the arcade. Well, when I wasn't at my summer job. Basically those two months consisted of only 3 phases for me. Work, sleep or arcade hall. One of the best summers of my teenage years. My friends went on vacations or tried to score dates and then there was me renting out gocarts, beach chairs and selling towels and living in the arcade hall when I didn't have to be at work. Playing games like Time CrisisI and II, Soul Calibur II, Mortal Kombat III, Crisis Zone and even some more classic games like Wonder Boy and Puzzle Bobble. Arcades are long gone now (at least where I live), but those memories will stay with me all my life. Real nostalgia trip, that is.
As someone born in '81(im old).. This video hit different. I've seen every one of these phases. I started with Atari and then NES. This felt like my gamer life flashing before my eyes. Absolutely excellent video.
Man to be a kid again and going through these times, yes there where hard times and struggles but the abundance of games, movies, old tv shows made it that bit easier. Not to mention through the 2000s being the golden eta of gaming, tv, movies and youtube
Great list! The loading music from the original World of Warcraft hits pretty hard for me. Biggest one NOT on the list was probably anything to do with Counterstrike...Getting the buy pattern down perfectly, knife kills, late nights just goofing around. I miss those days. As a side note, I'm a 7th grade science teacher, and one of my students just mentioned this website he found called Homestar Runner. It's funny how fast you become relevant to them when you can quote all the Strong Bad emails from 25 years ago 😅
Also right now in the golden age of indie development, oh but don't let me stop you from being a clueless non-gamer who isn't at all familiar with and doesn't actually play what is released these days...
Thank you for mentioning Barrens chat. It was the only reason I actually played Horde at all. It was a sense of community that's been long lost, even WoW Classic doesn't have that feeling.
Man watching this after coming home from work being kinda mad at everything made me so nostalgic. Makes me wish to be a kid again in this simpler time.

One of the best videos I have seen from you guys. I have been a fan of the channel for a few years now and I have to say it's very refreshing to see homestarrunner mentioned somewhere. I loved that page back in the day. Thank you for the memories.
Thanks for this video Gameranx! Brought so many great memories back for me. I experienced 8 out of 10 of these "memories" and they all mean so much to me to this day.
The last one ends the video on a very somber note for me, so many memories in school inbetween class breaks playing flash games, and while I would absolutely not play any of them today, it is kind of sad that they are gone. Every generation grows up so different, it is kinda melancholy. Thank you for the nostalgic video
My friends and I logged THOUSANDS of hours messing around in Halo 1-3; alliances were made and destroyed in a single afternoon countless times. We were also huge into the Rock Band series - I was terrible at guitar, but good at drums, so it all worked out. We'd also challenge each other to sing as well as play an instrument (it never went well).
Gameranx, you guys put together quailty gaming story content. This makes me want to play the old games, men 2000s was the golden era of gaming. Thanks!!❤❤❤

Growing up in the 90s was wonderful in many ways, gaming being one of them. The console wars had really been ramping up. I played a lot of Sonic, MGS, Tomb Raider and Castlevania among many others. These games still hold up.
The first Final Fantasy game I played was 7. I didn't know what to expect, so when I finally finished the Midgar-part and you got to run around freely, it just dawned on my what a huge and awesome game this was. THAT was something I will never forget. The golden saucer, just the entire scope of the size of this world. Whew.... More of a 90's moment.
Surprised they acknowledge the Alliance's existence without mentioning "P***shire". Barrens had the chat channels, Goldshire had the Night Elf strippers.
#6 is nostalgic but not lost. I remember startin DE Human Revolution, not expecting nothing and then hearing "Sarif Ambiance" - wow.... just wow! Or being hyped for Horizon Zero Dawn and hearing Aloy's theme in the main menu. Stunning. Setting the mood.
I remember wasting so much time on Newgrounds when I was a kid. Seen quite a lot of stuff on there that I shouldn't have but hey, it's still a big part of my childhood
I’m not sure if this was a thing In other countries, but in Brazil we had a place called Lan Houses, where dozens of PCs were connected on lan and you could play any game (that was installed on those pc). We played Counter Strike, Battlefield 1942, Unreal Tournament, etc, against random people that were in that same place as you (because it was on lan). The smell of cheetos and hair grease plus 2L of coke while you play the corujão (overnight) in the lan houses were priceless. You had to pay per hour though….. Computer were always expensive in Brazil so we could not afford to buy one for gaming, so we used to go on these Lan Houses. Playing online with early days DSLs or even with dial up internet was terrible, so playing on Lan was a HUGE thing in Brazil in the early 2000s
This is a great video. I love the music sections in the intros. Like halo still to this day I still will let it sit for a minute. Civ 6 also has an iconic intro music. Those games and start up are a chefs kiss. Or firing up NCAA football and hearing EA Sports it's in the game
The intro levels to sly 2, the ratchet & clank series, shadow of the colossus & uncharted 2 are also amazing examples of great introductions in gaming from the 2000’s
Can definitely relate to the significance of MW2. I actually do have a group of life-long friends from a neighboring state that I met through MW2. We all talk daily still and have even met up a few times
Never mind flash games, we had Quake 3 and Runescape installed on hidden folders in my school. When I was in my web design classes the teacher would just knowingly let us play Quake when he had no work for us. Also worth mentioning that Homestar Runner is still making videos, usually like 2-5 a year. There's probably going to be one soon because they always do a Halloween episode.
We had a small secluded room in the library where we played Brutal Doom. Most teachers usually turned a blind eye as long as we were quiet and didn't get the juniors involved. It took one kid to blab his mouth and spread it. Next thing we know, one of the stricter librarians found a crowd of Year 8s yelling and massacring each other out in the open, and policies on computer use during breaks was tightened. Naturally, we flipped the school the bird by playing Cards Against Humanity out in the open and the Year 9's learned some interesting new phrases.
Got goosebumps when you mentioned the Halo start screen music. I remember a guy in one of my high school classes that had a crappy flip phone picture of Guitar Hero proving he had completed Through the Fire and Flames on Expert (though it was only 3 stars).
btw those flash games aren't gone forever, there's a project called Flashpoint which has like every single flash game ever made basically in 1 software and you can either choose to download the entire catalogue which is like 250GB or download as you go from the massive list of games.
8:45 The Wii was hard to find during the holidays. In 2009, someone died after a radio contest on KDND "Hold your Wee for a Wii" after a contestant died after holding her pee for several hours. The contestants were also required to drink water periodically. The woman drank 2 gallons of water and died of intoxication after getting home. Not something to die over...
for me the best was playing morrowind/oblivion. the exploration and sense of discovery was so immersive and captivating. when you would go exploring deep into a cave or climb to the top of a mountain it really felt like you were the first person to do it and the freedom with decision making made it feel like every choice you made mattered. definitely the best era of gaming.
Man I remember how hyped I was to play that game. It sounded like the best game ever and it pretty much lived up to it. I love Skyrim but I'll always be an oblivion guy!
Falcons got me grinning like a fool with this nostalgia overload, bring a 2000 kid, being able to experience this and the memories made are some of my happiest memories.
Oh man... I laughed so hard at the first one. I was playing flash games every time we went to the computers room back at school. Good memories they are 😊
These videos always reinforce my FOMO...they always remind me of games I said I'd play one day but was too busy,,,and now it's been so long that they have changed, the community has changed, they are no longer playable, or they just flat out don't exist anymore.
Who's cutting these damn onions?! I feel like my youth was so great because of video games. I'm glad after my divorce I'm still relying on games to continue, aside from other factors.
Can't believe you didn't mention the opening level of the original God of War. I'll never forget fighting those hydra, it was so epic and such an iconic opening level and had me hooked right away
The main games that I remember from the late 90s-early 2000s is Rayman 2 & 3, Sonic Adventure, and of course Fallout 3. Man those days were awesome 😎👍🏼
I still have a PS2 hooked up to my TV that I played Vice City on when it came out.. that I rented from Blockbuster lol. I remember racing my friend on Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition on the PSP in the bathroom I’m 8th grade, while someone was outside keeping a lookout 😭😭 so many memories. No matter how many times you tell yourself not to take times in your life for granted, you’re really never understand it until they’re gone. Another amazing video; thank you guys.
It's crazy how during the 2000s the NFS series released great game after great game, after great game, after great game... I can't recall another series with that level of consistency with such a short time between releases.
Oh god i remember the hype for the fallout 3 release. I was so excited and afraid to enter this new world that I would have these incredible vivid dreams of vaults infested with rad roaches from the trailer. The first time i exited the vault into the blinding light will forever be etched into my memory.
I love the tone change when he mentioned start up screens. The piano on the entry had me dying 🤣. I had to give the like when you dropped the game cube and max Payne jingle/music
My first guesses before looking... The Console Wars.. and the HALO theme... at least for me, thinking of 2000-2010-era gaming stuff those 2 things come to mind and will stick with me forever... also maybe motion control gaming.. as scuffed as it was, at least Wii Sports was BANGIN'!
My very first motion style game experience was for the game Heavenly Sword on PS3. The levels where you're shooting arrows and then controlling their flight in slow motion were just so damn perfect. The game was worthwhile just for those sections
firing up halo 1 for the first time was bonkers. landing on the halo and seeing it curve up into the sky above me, the soundtrack with the haunting choir (you know the one) - completely indelible.
I've been gaming since the 80s and 90s. I'm 50 years old and still gaming. Started in the arcades with pinball then on to an Atari 2600, then a NES, then the PCs finally caught up with the Pentium and Pentium 2 processors, playing games in DOS, and I've been on PC ever since. All of this video was like a wave of memories. I miss LAN parties for Doom, Wolfenstein, Warcraft, and Starcraft. Starcraft especially. I didn't like Guitar Hero, the controller sucked, but I've played the crap out of Rack Band. I still do sometimes. The opening to Halo was one of the most beautiful video I had seen at that time. Modern games tend to lack that little bit extra that games back then had
Oh man, just hearing the music from Red Alert 2 takes me back! That was such a great game, especially with Yuri's Revenge and some player-made mods and maps.
When I bought halo1 day one and got into the open world first time with the space ship flying around in the sky was surreal and jaw dropping! I will never forget that experience! Being a gamer since the early 80s allowed me to experience firsthand the new technology in games. Ghouls n ghosts on snes intro mode 7 screen was another one.

The intro levels to sly 2, the ratchet & clank series, shadow of the colossus & uncharted 2 are also amazing examples of great introductions in gaming from the 2000’s
Close quarters shotgun duels in halo 2 were the definition of intense back in the heyday 😂
My brother charging with an energy sword and me pulling out the shotgun *just* in time was always a thrill (Halo 3).
Pure unadulterated nostalgia. Great trip down memory lane at a time when we all need it!
Newgrounds, Miniclip, Club Penguin 😂 I actually had a Xionic Madness binge a few weeks ago and the rush of nostalgia "heaven or hell!"❤️
👍🏼
The entire collection is 1.31 TB zipped. But you can get the smaller version which is only a couple of GB and download as you go
@@helvete983 oh damn it got larger since I've gotten it 2 years ago wow
OMG! That sounds too good to be true!
That was an absolute blast from the past. Thank you Falcon! I needed that trip down memory lane. 🥰
Listening to Falcon talk about MW2 put such a genuine smile on my face. Thank you for reminding me of such treasured memories.
for me the best was playing morrowind/oblivion. the exploration and sense of discovery was so immersive and captivating. when you would go exploring deep into a cave or climb to the top of a mountain it really felt like you were the first person to do it and the freedom with decision making made it feel like every choice you made mattered. definitely the best era of gaming.
Man I remember how hyped I was to play that game. It sounded like the best game ever and it pretty much lived up to it. I love Skyrim but I'll always be an oblivion guy!
I remember purchasing a new GPU just to play oblivion on launch. God how I loved that game!
NFS entries all being straight up fire. Yes, even Undercover and ProStreet.
👌🏼
It's crazy how during the 2000s the NFS series released great game after great game, after great game, after great game... I can't recall another series with that level of consistency with such a short time between releases.
Thank you for reminding me about strongbad. Been listening to videos all day at work lol
I'd love to see a separate video about your favorite opening missions from games 👍
Dude... with #6 you really went full nostalgic with your script and background music; almost made me cry remembering how fun were the old gen games...
🤝
what is the background music there? it sounds so beautiful
I'd love a video on startup screens! Not a top 10 or anything, just show off a ton of 'em. :)
YEEESS ahahah Halo bay bee! also NFSU was awesome back in the day! Played multiplayer with my Mum so much... ahhh....
I'd love to erase my memory and experience GTA San Andreas again for the first time.
🤝
My very first motion style game experience was for the game Heavenly Sword on PS3. The levels where you're shooting arrows and then controlling their flight in slow motion were just so damn perfect. The game was worthwhile just for those sections
👍🏼👌
I just cant forget first time play Half-Life 2. Really awesome.
🤝
Dave Mirra freestyle BMX intro will forever be laser engraved into my memory.
Bring back the sick intros !!!
Xbox 360 was good for its time!
Still hanging around those gangstas
🫡
firing up halo 1 for the first time was bonkers. landing on the halo and seeing it curve up into the sky above me, the soundtrack with the haunting choir (you know the one) - completely indelible.
Actually playing fighting games and unlock every character BY PLAYING and not nowadays BY PAYING
I love gameranx❤
❤️
Oh man, just hearing the music from Red Alert 2 takes me back! That was such a great game, especially with Yuri's Revenge and some player-made mods and maps.
👌👍🏼
6:35 what’s the song name?
When I bought halo1 day one and got into the open world first time with the space ship flying around in the sky was surreal and jaw dropping! I will never forget that experience! Being a gamer since the early 80s allowed me to experience firsthand the new technology in games. Ghouls n ghosts on snes intro mode 7 screen was another one.
Nice
Very nice
@@gameranxTV Thanks!
@@gameranxTV My third comment keeps getting Auto Deleted😢
