i watched these episodes all time as a seven and eight year old boy. My dad had been a Navy Hellcat and Douglass AD-6 Skyraider carrier aviator. When I was watching this we lived in Kingsville Tx and my dad was an advanced flight instructor at NAS Kingsville.
I was in the Navy back in the 1980's, I was stationed aboard the USS Nimitz Aircraft CVN-68 Which is a very large ship. I just want to say this to all of you submariner's, past and present, you individuals are of a special breed of sound mind and body. The average person can't even imagine what you go through, yes we can watch shows like this, that give us a close look at life on-board a sub.But the reality is there are many things left out of the story for the TV viewer. But that's another story. However traveling underwater at a depth of 200 feet with enemy ships passing overhead, isn't for the faint of heart. You the Silent Service protect us everyday. I salute all of you for your service! Your families love and miss you.
My Uncle Gilbert was a Submariner in WW2. I'm an Army 1SG retired. What these sailors/submariners did was absolutely amazing. I was on 2 Combat deployments and left unscathed. We lost 52 Submarines in WW2.
Day and night comparing the old diesel/electric vs Nuclear. My BIL was a supply officer on the nuclear boats. They have climate control, unlimited water so they don't stink anymore, and are not limited in submerged time, and they can go just as fast or faster submerged as surfaced. He said the best part was hearing about all the surface sailors puking while they felt no wave action at all. Imagine how amazed this crew would be to sail on a modern sub!
When I was a little kid, my dad and I watched this and 'Victory at Sea' on our little black and white TV. During the war, he was on an LCT that went from New Guinea through the Philippines to Japan - and an LCT is not meant to be an ocean-going vessel. Always had a lot of respect for those guys.
Our greatest generation! My dad was a Marine. He was in Guadalcanal and IwoJima and Korea. My uncle's were in the Army. Two of them hit the beach at Normandy. One was a navigator on a B-17. He was shot down and spent 3 yrs as a prisoner of war. He had a hard time whenever he saw a white picket fence. None of them ever talked about it. Thank you to all veterans of WW II. You saved the world!
Thanks for running this old series. I remember watching it as a kid. An uncle of mine served on the SILVERSIDES, and i think my parents were all for me watching this series. I think that there was a comparable series on West Point. At any rate, great old stuff.
So Barney really was a communist Dinosaur then... He sang & danced.... This Sub kicked ass.... Love these old news reels really I do... Maybe one day we will Have Sub Named the Trump...
That's how I found this show I was looking for my dad's sub 1941- 45 it's not in the whole series kind of stinks for those of us looking for our fathers sub and it's not in the show my dad's sub had 12 or 13 war patrols sunk hundreds of tons of enemy ships recieved many awards yet not one mention of it on this show . SS178 PERMIT

In dry dock, a destroyer looked puny to a LST, but one sub that came in for drydock, an old WW 2 sub, allegedly the largest one made in the war, looked like a toy in the same drydock that accomdated the BB’s Missouri & New Jersey...
This is a great story. Very impressed with the planning and implementation of this mission. A little surprised the Tinosa only sank around 12,000 tons of shipping?
Wahoo rests just north of La Paruse Straits, the northern exit from the Sea of Japan. I wonder where Bonefish rests since she apparently went down in the sea of j.
So entertaining and it almost looks like they could have made this in a closet space made to look like a sub. ... and then cue stock ocean footage. Good story telling like this and special effects aren't needed for the imagination to take over. I miss good story telling like this series!
The Guest Stars are the COOLEST! The Men that were actually there interest me No end! "Thanks Bill!" "Thanks Tommy!" A couple of good friends goofing off in front of the camera.
So the USS Tinosa Story didn't include them firing 15 torpedoes at a stationary target with 13 duds? Or was it still classified info at this point in history?
doggonemess That's true yeah. Believe it or not my great grandfather was actually the commander of the Tinosa when that happened, so I always got told the story by my grandma when I was a kid.
You think? What a harrowing experience. Talk about mental and physical stress! These guys lived through it all. Including my Uncle. Hat's off and crisp Salute from a retired Army 1SG.
Well captain, looking in your crystal ball! "Drum roll", at some point you'll be coastal town Mayor troubled by huge great white shark! A this little man with winny voice an thick glasses, an shark expert will drive you crazy!
Any TeeVee show would be a poor substitute, but if there were a single mom out their with a little boy and she had no male figure to set an example or any other alternative, she could sit him down in front of an episode of this everyday to get some lessons on how to be a good man.
Surface navies are nothing but missle targets unable to protect themselves, slow moving targets. WW2 is over. Any new war us only an hour to depopulate the planet. The bubbleheads will be the last to die.

The captain is Murray Hamilton, he played the town mayor in the Jaws movies 😊

White picket fence?

Men of Annopolis
I have so much admiration and gratitude to these men. Thank you, to all vets, for your service. America LOVES you.
My grandfather Earl Ault was on this patrol. He was on many patrols including the 11th war patrol on this very submarine. Very cool to see this.
Wow, he was definitely a hero by any standards.
My daddy was an officer of a submarine repair unit based in Pearl from ‘43 to ‘45. Maybe they knew each other.
So Barney really was a communist Dinosaur then... He sang & danced.... This Sub kicked ass.... Love these old news reels really I do... Maybe one day we will Have Sub Named the Trump...

the courage of these men is so amazing.....hats off and standing up strait in respect
My grandfather served on this ship.
His name was Dick Dixon.
Richard, thanks for uploading these. I remember watching these as a kid in the late fifties and early sixties. Sure brought back a lot of memories.
The skipper is Murray Hamilton. Mayor Vaughn from Jaws.
and Mr Robinson from The Graduate
I remember this program from my eat adolescence outside of Chicago where we had channels 11,2 4, and 13 for PBS
He mentioned “ Blind mans bluff “ name of book regarding submarine operations in the Cold War.
Read it. Great stories.

My dad, Navy Ensign, Subchaser, Caribbean and East coast.
i love this series!
Great stuff
This is a great story. Very impressed with the planning and implementation of this mission. A little surprised the Tinosa only sank around 12,000 tons of shipping?
They were small ships. About 2000 tons each.
Amazing story, and smart move not to surface for the cunning enemy tricksters.
These rock, dude. Thanks for sharing. SN USN
Wahoo rests just north of La Paruse Straits, the northern exit from the Sea of Japan. I wonder where Bonefish rests since she apparently went down in the sea of j.
Awesome.thank you.steel balls going through the mine field.

Thank You, Admiral Dykers! Rest In Peace, Sir.
Scuttled off Hawaii November 1960 after being used as an anti-submarine warfare target
These guys were brave beyond belief.
Good to know how familiar they were with downed aircrew's ditching gear.
Irwin Allen probably saw that sub surface at the begining, and thought " That's how the SEAVIEW will surface."
The Guest Stars are the COOLEST! The Men that were actually there interest me No end! "Thanks Bill!" "Thanks Tommy!" A couple of good friends goofing off in front of the camera.
It's Chief Brody on the horn, something about a bigger boat.

Navy never had liked to embarrass itself!

@@taylorleibel4327 , not sure of the relationship but my relative was the captain. Probably a great uncle but I’m not entirely sure
@@rodfirefighter8341 They like it even less when you do it for them.(in reference on how the Navy dislikes being embarrassed)
Steel Boats and Iron Men👍

I thought this was a TV show.
I was hoping the fish that came back to them would have hit the INJ ship that dropped the depth charges on them.
...that would have been an amazing piece of luck...
Nice
That’s the same guy that didn’t wanna shut down the beach in Jaws
These Subs can reach 20 knots flat out!
A bunch of lucky subs that didn’t have to hide from VS-872 , ya I know they are post war ( just) reservists but they kick some ass !
Well "Hells Bells".
❤
At the beginning the captain was smoking a cigarette, truly stupid scene! Smoking wasn’t permitted on submarines!!
...I suppose the commanding officer can smoke if he wants-(?)
There radio procedures make me cringe. Where was the military advisor ?
Why can this kind programiy be made for tv wwii movies and movies made japan and germany view
L😊
"We can do it, easy" . F$%k a bunch orders. Yeah up scope.
My Uncle was on the Tinosa's later namesake. The Nuclear Powered Tinosa.
Bubble heads no thanks I’ll be on the surface surface navy
