Well yeah cos I wanted to see real footage instead of cartoons. Kind of weird to get a short nature documentary with only cartoons of the creatures when there's tonnes of real footage.
Once I saw a Bull Ant Colony kill a Argentine Ant Colony How: The Bull Ants covered the hole of the Argentine ant's nest... and any Argentine Ants which escaped were slaughtered by the Bull Ants
Seems like a really unsettling species of ant with how ravenous they can be of their environment. On the other hand, there is a certain level of beauty in how they are able to cooperate with each other. Their rapid expansion combined with their efficiency makes them scary though.
Ants Australia my brother named brendon was thinking of buying a queen ant you told him where you lived and it was about 50km I wondering if you could teach my brother about raising ants he is going to buy cotten and tubes now thanks!
AntsCanada : Is where I watch my favorite colonies and keep me awake and active AntsAustralia : Helps my insomniac ass go to sleep bc of a mellow and calming voice
Very good video about these fantastic creatures. They are very dominant here where I live in Alabama,USA and I even remember when Fire Ant beds were very common..they are very rare now. Since the Argentines marched in it really has changed the varieties of insects we used to see here unfortunately. Having said that however I am fascinated in watching how they organize themselves ( it's therapeutic to watch) into ant highways when they discover food...they remind me very much of how humans in a large society cooperates..it's no wonder they thrive everywhere they are!
I'm from Argentina and never saw an Argentine ant, but U heard about how infamous they were among ant breeders. Now I know why. Such an interesting specie
I'm so happy you did the Argentine Ants! Thank you! It is so important we learn which ones these are as here in Amrtica they are the #1 home invaders mistakenly called "sugar ants". They'll line in our walls or a little hole in the soil near our home or uber cracks in walkways or under human paper litter if it's damp. These guys are very adapted to humans and love us dearly! I hope you enjoy your new colony, as they are the most fascinating to watch and keep as a new ant keeper.
Very very good, we have problems with these ants and found that if we pressure wash the house in powerful soap it helps keep them OUT of the house. Thanks for sharing! Well explained.
I have a question: since these non-native Argentine ants cooperation is so effective, why didn't this behaviour occur naturally through evolution with other ant species? Great video; love all your work :)
Only a few ant queens were introduced when they first moved continents so there was less genetic variation and a lot of them were killed so even less variation
Keep in mind that evolution is a slow process. Drastic changes, such as the invasion of a foreign specie, are often temporary. Invasive species destroy their habitat and ultimately their own chance at survival. It only works as long as there's more untouched habitat to destroy. After a while they will hit a dead end and whatever trait makes them invasive will prove detrimental and be selected against. Ants aren't supposed to cooperate on a global scale. It's an accident. Just because it's working right now doesn't mean it's a successful strategy in the long run. So the present situation might not be stable and representative of the future. If argentine ants survive on different continents, isolated colonies will drift genetically to the point of attacking each other again.
Incredibly interesting 🙂 Your presentation achieves a very high level of captive interest and educational value with your choices of ambient music & tempos. Amazing. Makes me so happy when people get it right. Well done 😉
They both have their styles. AntAus is more documentarian, but Ants Canada has a fun Community too. Appreciate the diversity in the community. AntCan has done pretty well in SEO and has gotten me into other Ant Channels.
One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.
I have a question: if part of the reason for Argentine Ants' success is that they cooperate with others of the same species, why isn't this trait more common with other ant species? I love your videos! Keep up the great work! :)
because where they evolved there was massive ant competition that forced them to socialize and attack other ants. native ants did not needed to do that
My local Argentine ants are ridiculous about their budding behavior. They're more than happy to bud 20 queens right into my kitchen trashcan every week. Horribly, this never seems to deplete their numbers, as they keep moving colony after colony into my potted plants.
Hello there. I today got a package from overseas that had a small colony living in the electronics, with brood and a couple of queens. Naturally, as I had no idea what the species was, I made sure to contain them and destroy them. I posted about this in a group on the Facebook, and got so many comments saying I should just keep them, or that a single colony couldn't hurt. This got me very annoyed, repeating myself over and over about how our delicate ecosystem is already being threatened by invasive species, and often can't out compete them. One commenter saying I should keep them said I should have asked you for help in keeping them. So, here we go then, if you got a package like I did from overseas with a small colony inside it, ants you don't recognise, what would you do?
you do these documentary quality videos all by yourself? Nice work :D only critique: when narrating you make some strange breaks and intonations (sometimes it almost sounds like you'd cut different parts of a sentence together in editing)
Thanks! Yes, I do all the writing, narration, filming and editing myself. Everything except the music, which is by Kevin MacLeod. Yeah, I know what you mean and it bugs me too! Cutting isn't the issue, it's a problem with either my microphone or audacity. Records with wild spikes in audio, which makes the narration sound a bit unusual in places. I'm still a bit new to this...Hopefully I can resolve the issue for the next one.
i got a huge colony of these that live near my outside trash can over a few months they killed every fire ant colony in my yard and i just see swarms of them when they find food
They will really set up anywhere. I once found a new little colony setting up underneath a speaker in my living room. The area under the speaker is less than half an A4 sheet. I found the queen and captured her and a few ants and some brood and tried to set up my first ant farm, but they left after a day or two when I accidentally let the water barrier dry up. (I only had this pretty ordinary kids ant farm from when I was kid, and the ventilation holes were too big for the Argentine ants so I used a water mote to keep them in. I didn't know what I was doing.)
Where did you get your colonies? I live in North America and I have read that Argentine ants do not have nuptial flights but rather mate inside their old colony. They take around 10 workers and relocate to another area. I would love to own this species of ant but have no idea where/when to get them.
Hi Jordan I love your videos! The footage is just amazing and your style of narrating is great! I wonder how you make this videos and what equipment you use to make them. Perhaps you coulod make a Video about it? Greets from Switzerland
Thanks Simon! Really glad you enjoyed. Yeah, I was thinking of doing a behind the scenes style video. We'll see... Past couple of videos I've been using a Canon EOS 1300 D with an EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro Lense along with a cheap LED video light. Switzerland? Federer fan? :)
Haha... yea kind of..=) but I think you won't find any Swiss who is not (at least a little) Federer fan. He is something like the innoficial national hero. Looking forward to your future Videos, can't wait to watch them!
I would imagine so, haha. Was great to see him win the Australian Open last night! I look forward to making them. Starting to really enjoy film making again.
Thanks! Copulation usually takes place within the nest. Inbreeding rarely occurs because the alates, both male and female, have often joined the nest from separate colonies.
how can I catch an Argentine ant Queen? I have some in my backyard and spotted a few alates after a rainy day but I dont know how to find a Queen. What time of the day is best to look for queens?
Head to the area where you've seen them present on a warm sunny day, and start flipping some rocks. They don't nest very deep within the ground, so you'll likely find most of the colony exposed. Then just collect up some queens, workers and brood. You can even place some rocks on top of the nests within your back yard to draw them to the surface.
Ants Australia you can do any you want. I love all your ant colony's but if you want me to pick then the Fidolay colony(big head,I don't know if that's how you spell it). haven't seen a update for 9 months :) or just a vid of all your colony's and I love how you edit your vids btw
Pheidole is how you spell it. Jordon, if i can ask, how is the Iridomyrmex colony you released doing? Are they still where you originally saw them move off to?
Yeah, planning on doing an update video on my Pheidole colony eventually. Not really sure how the Iridomyrmex colony is. I was tracking their progress for a few weeks after their release, but the area became overgrown and made it almost impossible to find them. Now I might just occasionally see some workers foraging, but there's really no way of telling whether they're are just ants from a different colony.
I have tried to keep Argentine ants in the past, but they always seem to abandon their queen unless I designate a darkened area as the nest. The temperature and humidity were likely wrong.
Statistically this makes this colony compete with human society. With billions of workers and millions of nests all with the same goal, this would be equivalent to all of humans uniting to accomplish goals. I can't imagine what the nest highways constantly look like.
I love your channel and the fact that in this video you didn't have your usualy depressing voice makes me happy and makes it more enjoyable! No offense of course, its just, when I watch your old video and you sound soo... Tired and depressed it makes me sad and ruins excitement for me.. BUT THIS! This is good!
If you would put some building material in there (like sand or rather) you could learn how the ants like to live. You have provided tunnels, though you don't think entirely like an ant, so the ants used cotton to change the layout of the tunnels. Why? idk. But we could learn if you gave them some building blocks to work with.
Oh my goodness! It must have been so much fun getting to film all this! Such a wonderful and informative video! Love your work! Keep up the great vids!!! :D
I remember as a kid (in Australia) you would actually get money if you found a nest or a congregation of Argentine ants. Kids would spend a few hours after school searching for any, report through to the special 'hot line' specifically set up for this purpose. I remember some kids boasting about how much money they'd made 😂
What a cool Ants, just because they are the same species, they co-operate with each other, instead of fighting and killing each other, if only humans was like this Ants it would be a better World.
a long time ago..... look an ant colony *steps on the hill and gets bitten 10 times* ouch, I'll get revenge on you..... now.... omg an ant colony! *gets a grasshopper* feed, feed my little minions
Out of topic, but if a queen ant is unfertilized, do the eggs they lay never hatch, or do the eggs hatch male ants instead? Or does it only happen with specific species?
Unfortunately, that's a possibility. Although, their lack of diversity could be their undoing, and they don't do so well in temperate regions where the winters get quite cold. Some natives have even found ways to deter them. Here's an excellent video on the topic - ruclips.net/video/boyzWeHdtiI/видео.html
@Azriel Axe It was cold and the ants liked the heat it generated. They would come inside through cracks in the walls, (to be honest, they probably had nested in the walls too) and they decided that her laptop was a great place to set up shop. She didn't move it from her desk very often so we didn't notice them until she moved it and the ants attacked lol.
Hi Anne, Nothing unimportant about these ants to me. They’re endemic in my neighborhood and it’s a constant fight to keep them out of the house. The place is almost uninhabitable. And there’s precious little humans can do about them. They’re ruinous. A small problem is if I grow vegetables in my garden, I can’t give the extra to friends because the ants will travel on the vegetables.
"Here at ants australia"? You getting a business started? Also, I noticed you used the same footage you gave me for the magpie thing. I love the way you present this stuff. It really looks like a top of the line documentary. Loving the footage. Also, I wouldn't mind trying out one of your prototype nests. how much does it cost?
Thanks! That's great to hear. Yeah, that's the plan. Launched our website today. We're not selling the prototypes, so you'd have to wait for the final versions. Hoping to have them ready within the next few months.
***** great! May I also say, your argentine ant colony; if you don't want to kill them, and want to let them benefit research on ants, I have something to do with them. I'd be happy to take them off your hands
Sorry, already passed them onto somebody else. They're really easy to collect yourself. Head to an area where you've seen them present on a warm sunny day, and start flipping some rocks. They don't nest very deep within the ground, so you'll likely find most of the colony exposed. Then just collect up some queens, workers and brood.
Sorry, unless I get the chance to travel overseas and do some filming there, I'll be sticking to local Australian ants. Next one's on Sugar Ants (Camponotus spp.)
What if you genetically modified a bunch of different ant species and made them seem genetically identical and put a bunch of their queens together, how fats would the colony grow and how many different ants would you see?
Who's here after the Argentine Ants video by Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell?
Marcq perhaps
Well yeah cos I wanted to see real footage instead of cartoons. Kind of weird to get a short nature documentary with only cartoons of the creatures when there's tonnes of real footage.
same here too

Once I saw a Bull Ant Colony kill a Argentine Ant Colony

This if the Soviets and British empire combined. Colonize everything and manpower solves all.
Peronismo puro
Yes my thoughts exactly…
Love you and AntsCanada's vids!
Thanks so much! :)
great vid
Ants Australia my brother named brendon was thinking of buying a queen ant you told him where you lived and it was about 50km I wondering if you could teach my brother about raising ants he is going to buy cotten and tubes now thanks!
Lyz Nguyen there's many videos for your brother to look up online for raising new colony.. I wish him the best!
Ants Australia do you have anything to do with ants Canada?
AntsCanada : Is where I watch my favorite colonies and keep me awake and active
AntsAustralia : Helps my insomniac ass go to sleep bc of a mellow and calming voice

Great video btw

Son las hormigas coloradas. Fue nuestra venganza por la introducción de las hormigas culonas de USA :O
I am from Argentina and grow up playing with these ants when I was a kid.
I poured water down an argentine ant nest and the all came rushing out with brood and queens. I slaughtered them with a can of chemicals
Normally I Would Be Pissed, But Since Argentines Are Invasive, I Stan You

Yeah his voice makes me feel happy as well
Very educational. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed! :)
You should work with AntsCanada
Ants Australia Wants next? Meat Ants or is it something else

It's amazing how a different type of ant can change the eco system.
Incredibly interesting 🙂

hey man your videos are great i love ants canada but your style is much more mellow. thankyou for making videos.

He’s more mellow and better to watch than ants canada who turned into some childish ant youtuber

Im from Argentine and yes this lil moherfkers are common as grass as well theyre supper annoying yet fun to watch
A really like how much effort you put into your videos :) Hope you become just as well known as Ants Canada.
Great video! Amazing quality as well. Keep going Jordan
Thank you! :)

Thanks again Brendon!
The music he chose is very fitting. Sounds like ants! 7:30

Because the other ants don't have enough intelligence yet
Great video man, I loved the artificial colony part.
Thanks Isaac! Glad you enjoyed :)
Another great video worthy of a documentary TV channel. Keep them comming
Thanks so much Felipe! Will do :)
Wonderful documentry brother! Loved every part of it!

It could be to do with some sort of stupid trade so I'd probably freeze them if they'd been IDd as foreign.
Beautiful and useful work Jordan. Effort well spent!
Thank you! :)
*FOR THE ANTPIRE!*
Your videos are of high quality. I'm looking forward to see more videos from your youtube channel.
Thanks! Look forward to making them :)
Seriously I look it several times to retain the precious advice. Thanks again.
you do these documentary quality videos all by yourself?

only critique: when narrating you make some strange breaks and intonations (sometimes it almost sounds like you'd cut different parts of a sentence together in editing)

Liometopum occidentalis (velvety tree ants) can beat argentine ants with acid
I just heard about these ants.
Absolutely incredible.
They scary me.
great video!

Good information about the ants in the wild! Thanks for the uploads AA!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy them :)
welcome back mate
i got a huge colony of these that live near my outside trash can over a few months they killed every fire ant colony in my yard and i just see swarms of them when they find food
They will really set up anywhere. I once found a new little colony setting up underneath a speaker in my living room. The area under the speaker is less than half an A4 sheet. amazing Videos !!! some of the nicest footage of ants i found in the entire web. Keep going love it :)
I find these all the time infact i have a small ant colony of these and they have smal queens and more than one queen ants in a colony.
I have a colony with at least 5 queens ( what I've counted ) do you think when it's nuptial flight season the queens will make more queens and kings?
love the video keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Josh! :)
Where is your update of your colony?
Which colony? I have many :)
You could voice some Vaati Vidya videos, smoooothhh mellow tones :D

how can I catch an Argentine ant Queen? I have some in my backyard and spotted a few alates after a rainy day but I dont know how to find a Queen. What time of the day is best to look for queens?

I'm pretty sure this is the species of the ant colony in A Bug's Life
So... These are the *Solenopsis invicta* (Imported Fire Ants) of Australia?
StormishBreeze we have those too haha but on in queensland
what happens to the argentine ants if their nesting site is too small for them, and also what happens if the resources are too little?
Out of topic, but if a queen ant is unfertilized, do the eggs they lay never hatch, or do the eggs hatch male ants instead? Or does it only happen with specific species?
Unfertilised eggs will usually become male ants regardless of the species.
the channel name is like AntsCanada but a different country
So, is there a way to stop these ants or are all other ant species doomed?
Unfortunately, that's a possibility. Although, their lack of diversity could be their undoing, and they don't do so well in temperate regions where the winters get quite cold. They would come inside through cracks in the walls, (to be honest, they probably had nested in the walls too) and they decided that her laptop was a great place to set up shop. She didn't move it from her desk very often so we didn't notice them until she moved it and the ants attacked lol.
This is the most completely unimportant issue I have ever seen a sentient being concern himself with.
Yay I saw some more native ants in California not just Argentines. I saw some sort of Dracula ant and a GIANT sugar ant
do a vid on sugar ants
Was actually thinking of doing a video on them next. We'll see...
Then just collect up some queens, workers and brood.
can you make video on Pachycondyla astuta?
Sorry, unless I get the chance to travel overseas and do some filming there, I'll be sticking to local Australian ants. Next one's on Sugar Ants (Camponotus spp.)
I feel like habsberg ants would be more suiting for a name.
What if you genetically modified a bunch of different ant species and made them seem genetically identical and put a bunch of their queens together, how fats would the colony grow and how many different ants would you see?
I noticed these ants killed the Texas red biting ants in my yard which I’m not mad about. These don’t seem to bite.
Do you mean the fire ants? They are invasive as well.
