If you are a returning subscriber, THANK YOU for being part of the family!
Today we discuss the very depressive state of affair our favourite gaming industry verges on. What is it all about? Why so many studios are closing? Is there anything different that could be or could have been done by Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, Jim Ryan and the other leaders and ex-leaders? Let's discuss!
I hope you enjoy the video! And if so, don't forget to SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and SHARE the video around!

Great, great points. I think you nailed it earlier in the vid with the problem being shareholders. With publicly traded corporations, its not enough to just "succeed", you need to multiply your profits. Its NOT sustainable.

Your earlier short was a tease for this upcoming video; interesting. You managed to express a lot with just the "um, um, um" interview clip so it will be fascinating to see what else you have to say regarding this unfortunate situation.
0:43 - Still annoyed at Sony's treatment of their Japan Studios. Gravity Rush Remastered was the game that would have convinced me to buy a PS4 if my younger brother didn't go ahead and do that. Their IP catalogue focus lacks the appeal towards me now... though Stellar Blade was a tempting moment.
4:20 - The 3DO was a new company whom managed to release an entire console and still survived for a few years as a 3rd party developer after their consoles failure... though to be fair, it also got 4th place in it's generation. The fact that it managed to continue so long after such a costly failure is also impressive and shows how much worse things have been gotten when far less and smaller failures have resulted in studio closures.
6:26 - Required mention of Satoru Iwata cutting his salary during the Wii U years to avoid/minimise layoffs. Edit: I see you did at 14:44; jolly good!
7:02 - The worst part about the Warner Bros statement is that they saw Hogwarts Legacy was a success, saw Suicide Squad was not, then said they wanted more of the latter rather than the former.
10:26 - The Tango Gameworks shut down is the strangest of them all. Even if one were to try and justify it by saying that many of the key members had left, the studio existing in Japan meant Xbox had access to a Japanese developer talent pool. They could hire new developers from the region, developers who wouldn't want to relocate for a job and foster their unique perspective.
11:42 - I would say they could afford it because they are so insanely rich, but then I remember that a lot of large companies, especially American ones, run off a debt-based lending focused system of finance.
15:02 - The baffling thing about the advancement of technology is that it hasn't made game development easier. Games are now taking longer than ever due to constantly and rather unneeded increasing scope, far outstripping the improvements that technology have made to try and make development smoother. It's a bigger is better mentality that really isn't.
16:49 - That's the thing though, to my knowledge, Hi-Fi Rush was supported... and Tango was still shut-down. It is the bizarre case where success was met with closure.
19:57 - Ironically, they won't conclude that people don't want a cash-grabbing live service game or that those who enjoy live-service games are content and dedicated to the ones they are already playing. It seems they always take the wrong message; Warner Bros being a recent example.
