The goal of this movie is not to be good, but to be a FUN TIME. It's just supposed to make you happy with the rediculous musical numbers, saccharine songs, bright colors, and wedding plot. There aren't a whole lot of movies that exist just to make you happy that are marketed towards adults, so let's just enjoy!
@@taylorbarnhart9882 You have all the rights to like this musical but saying "it's my favorite musical" isn't a valid point (honestly it isn't even an argument). Objectively speaking it still isn't a good musical.
It's not meant to be technically good, it's about being fun! I'm a cinema snob most of the time, just liking the artsy films, but this is just dumb and fun and the best time ever. I love it.
I totally agree with you but the thing is that everyone in a small town or village in Greece, literally EVERYONE cares about a wedding . I mean everyone helps to organize the wedding at some point and in the Greek culture ,a wedding is very important not only about what it stands for but about the whole ceremony and the celebration after it ( γλέντι ). Greek people make a huge deal about it and I know that cause I am from Greece and I've been around during multiple weddings, so yeah, they do care and they do want to help . I think that this is one of the only accurate things about the Greek culture that are portrait in this film.
Seriously! My family have so many ties to Greece and my parents were married in a small village in Kos. All the people were so enthusiastic and happy she wanted to be married there and everyone came together to celebrate and organise it. I wasn’t there obviously lol but it sounds so lovely.
Mama Mia is a hot mess of a musical movie and I absolutely love it! I've watched it seven times this year alone and only once not sober, I watch it with friends, alone or with my mom and I always have a good time. My seventeenth birthday was terrible because there was a death in the family a few days before but while watching this movie I did feel like a dancing queen ™ young and sweet only seventeen, even if just for a bit. I am so thankful that I live in a univers where this movie exists and I am absolutely going to watch the second part with my mom in the cinema , hopefully in English (not always available in Germany) and perhaps I'll even dig out the yellow platform shoes and the red bellbottom pants!
I love that part where meryl streep is like ‘it’s a horrible trick of fate’ and all the islanders behind her just start laughing for no reason and when she turns around they immediately stop
The reason they were laughing is because they're supposed to be that "fate" like when she sings Mama Mia and she wants to open that door but then one of them open it and she looks around confused, it's because she can't actually see them there and then the all blow at her and a guest of wind makes her fall through the little door (you probably already knew this idk but I thought I'd just explain it anyway cuz I didn't realize it as a kid lol)
How can you not enjoy this movie? I mean granted if you go into it expecting a Citizen Kane you gonna be disappointed..lmao But it is SO much fun. And heartwarming. Plus ABBA songs which are catchy as hell
no joke, watching Mamma Mia 2 in the cinema was actually one of the best experiences of my life. Everyone clapping at the end, the lights coming up but not a single person moving because Meryl Streep was singing Super Trouper, hundreds of middle age ladies absolutely cackling throughout it. 10/10 recommend
I remember feeling ashamed that I loved Mamma Mia in my early teens, when the cool internet culture was cynical and "grown-up," and I gotta say I'm so glad we're past that so we can truly enjoy Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again the way God intended.
The reason the town cares so much is because they're meant to represent a Greek chorus, following the main characters around and reacting to everything.
i got to experience the "millions of millions of old women" thing when i went to see Book Club opening night and the theatre was completely full of people over 60 except me
I've been in love with this movie since age 13- even now at 19 I ponied up the money to go see the Broadway version, and on the bus ride there me and a bunch of older women watched the movie AGAIN. It was incredible 10/10 would do again
God I love Mama Mia, I watched it as a kid and when I found out there was gonna be a second one I rewatched it...and I was probably laughing throughout the whole thing, especially the lay all your love on me sequence. Just the guys literally coming out of nowhere and dragging him away it’s just great. I love it and can’t WAIT for the sequel
I agree that mamma Mia does not work as a movie, but all that shit works amazing on stage and you should see it. Considering that it was made for stage performers, I think mamma Mia is amazing and was just adapted poorly
I like how you used Dancing Queen as an example of them starting to sing out of nowhere when the Chiquitita scene exists and it’s way more out of place and ends so abruptly. Lmao! Loved this review! Hope you had fun watching Mamma Mia 2!
I watched last Sunday with my mom and she loved it. And she is pretty excited about the sequel. And I think it's the first time in years that my mom is interested to going to the Movies.
The Alamo Drafthouse near me showed this movie as part of a Mother’s Day special and they had a special Mother’s Day brunch menu to go with it.I’ve seen a it a couple of times before but it was still really fun to see it today on Mother’s Day.
Karsten, the quality of your videos have increased exponentially over the time I’ve been subscribed and I feel like a proud mum. 10/10 keep up the good work
HEY I really like your videos and this is my favourite, I just watched mamma mia 2 a week ago and you gotta review that shit. this was an amazing analysis and you're 100% right. love it, killin it, i grew up on abba, great singing
On one hand, I like this in a “so bad it’s good” way, and I had a ball watching it. On the other hand, ROB WALKER WILL LOSE HIS MIND IF HE SEES THIS VIDEO.
As a person who played Pepper in my school’s rendition of Mamma Mia I can confirm that the ‘Does your mother know’ scene is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!! IT’S PEPPER’S MOMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT!!
I think the reason so many people enjoy Mamma Mia isnt for its plot or characters, its mostly because of its music and female relationships. It is so female centric and it focuses so much on female pleasure and needs, this is also mirrored in its camera work and how it portrays the female gaze. For example I have never seen a film with a scene set in a beach/pool where the main female protagonist isnt wearing a bikini, yet Sophie wears a somewhat modest one piece bathing suit and there are no intruding shots forwarded towards her body. The idea of female friendship here plays a big role, we dont often see middle aged women dance and sing and be this confident in their bodies and still have dreams to the future in movies, and I love Sky and Sophie's relationship because it ISNT about them, he is not the only man in her life and she doesnt want him to be because she is larger than a relationship she wants to know who her father is not because of a dissatisfied life or a nosy tendency but because she wants to learn more about herself and her mother's past.
I grew up watching Mamma Mia! and going to see it live. So this film really connected with me and when I saw it with my ENTIRE family I didn’t even wanna think objectively about the movie! This movie and the musical in general has such a close place in my heart.
My mom and my sister made me watch this and I felt exactly the same as you did. Looking forward to seeing the second one haven't gotten a chance to see it yet.
I'm glad mamma Mia is having a renaissance in being appreciated now because I've always loved it and never understood why people disliked it or said it was bad Like the plot is alright But the music, choreography and general vibe of it is so fun and happy. And the sequel was just as fun too!
Funny because absolutely EVERYONE in Britain knows this movie. Statistically 1 in 3 British households have it on DVD, one of the most successful movies here ever. But in America it was just meh
this is what i like to say about mamma mia...it is cheesy. it never promises to be anything more than cheese, so if you go in expecting anything other than cheese you will be upset and disappointed...BUT if you just sit back and relax and let it be cheese, it becomes some fine fine cheese that pairs well with an expensive glass of wine. let it be cheese. thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Yeah but that doesn't make it a good musical
Eric Jerman it’s my favorite musical so yes it does

You're right, Katie. The goal of this movie is not to be a masterpiece, it's actually to be a cheesy, very fun, musical
"mamma mia is actually good" we been knew
"mamma mia is actually good" we been know
i wanna move to Greece, open a hotel and only sing abba for years to come
Adriana Wertheimer count me in
Absolute goals
Lol I live in greece and my mother has a hotel
I’ll join you
Η Μαγεια Του Κινηματογραφου Do you happen to know who your dad is?
it's not about plot it's about feeling good and family and it delivers on that!!!
That doesn't make a movie good

Merely Mayhem
The first time I watched it I was high and so confused and yet so amazed lmao
Andy Johnson True, watching it high is rly a hell of an experience :D
Merely Mayhem I want to feel bad for you because of what you said BUT you somehow think this movie is good
I watched it alone on my 25th birthday a week after my dad died. Less fun but still better than plenty of other films.
Sure Mamma Mia isn't perfect, but it's a feel good flick that never fails to make me happy
I love that part where meryl streep is like ‘it’s a horrible trick of fate’ and all the islanders behind her just start laughing for no reason and when she turns around they immediately stop
A true Greek chorus!
It's very greek.
@@christinaovsepian1043 I've seen that movie so many times and I honestly NEVER made that connection!!! ... I need to watch it again now.
They show up at the end dressed up as Greek gods too.
How can you not enjoy this movie? I mean granted if you go into it expecting a Citizen Kane you gonna be disappointed..lmao

M.L. Soll I was expecting a fun and cheesy musical, instead I got a boring, unfunny and badly acted mess, the songs didn’t even fit in the movie.
well that's your own personal problem
Why are you so insecure about your opinions?
Controversial opinion: I think citizen Kane is kind of crap.
Colin Firth automatically increases a movies quality by one point
fact!!
Mama Mia is honestly the most surreal experience and I wouldn't change it for the world
