✊🏿 North Carolina: Kinston, Goldsboro, New Bern, Havelock, Jacksonville, Farmville and my hometown Greenville…. but I was adopted and raised in Reidsville
Reidsville has a great basketball and football program! Jerome Simpson stands out to me as the most athletic person I've ever seen from Rockingham County!
I would say Bill Fay, Director of Recreation, in Kinston, played a big part in contributing to what was in that sweet artesian well water. Fay was critical in placing rec centers with basketball courts in all parts of Kinston. Whether it was Holloway or Fairfield or Freeman they all became like farm team feeding grounds for KHS. I remember Coach Paul Jones visiting a kid's basketball game and all of us 12- year olds knew who he was and the buzz was on. Living that Kinston basketball dream, events in my life included Carolina Basketball Camp where coach Dean Smith took the time to praise a 9th-grade kid for his defense. Later as a student teacher, I found this 6'11 kid shooting hoops in the gym. He said he had been cut and didn't make the team. That kid was Cedric Maxwell. One of my best memories of Mock gym was the night Pistol Pete Maravich played in a prep school exhibition game. No matter the color of your skin, basketball was the uniting factor that has made K-town a hotbed for talent for colleges and the NBA.
So good. Never heard of Kinston but coming from a small town with a lot of talent I can appreciate the level of excellence y’all have maintained. Great story. Hopefully the next generation continues the legacy.
i was just in Kinston yesterday. great basketball tradition. in recent years Farmville has kind of been dominant in that region in regards to high school basketball, but Kinston is still one of the elites for sure.
Nice story and reminds me of some smaller cities in NY like Mount Vernon and Niagara Falls. Ironically, Mount Vernon got a lot migration from eastern NC.
Well done! Born and raised 25 mins from there during the Stackhouse era. Shame what happened to that mall. It used to be a treat to go there in its heyday.
They also had a very good player, I forget his name I believe his last name was Powell who played at Kinston in 1978. They beat my school Westover, who was very good that year in the state playoffs.
They didn't focus on Paul Jones enough. When Coach Jones told a player not to take a certain shot or whatever, that player did exactly what he was told to do or he sat or was gone.
NC stand up!
😂Kinston plays 2A Charlotte stand up (704 born n raised)🤘🏾💯
NC come on an raise up take your shirt off

Absolutely beautiful. It was finally nice to see the good in Kinston, NC❤❤❤❤❤❤

Great documentary great players and coaches to...Tena Coefield and Alford Coefield also from Kinston
My good friend Mike Talbott talks about that city basketball talent all the time
Mitchell Wiggins played in all those gyms in Kinston
It has nothing to do with the water. It's the culture and the appetite for excellence.
I is from Backlands about 45 min from Lagrange. Now we can roll
Believe me, folks in North Carolina who love high school basketball, know about Kinston High school.
They also had a very good player, I forget his name I believe his last name was Powell who played at Kinston in 1978. They beat my school Westover, who was very good that year in the state playoffs.
We beat Kingston in 2007 in the state championship and them boys could hoop. Great fans as well.

Not a Kinston guy but Lenoir County still you can throw in the late Mitchell Wiggins to that list!
