  • A small town of Kinston is located in Lenoir County in the coastal plains region of eastern North Carolina. In 2024 it has a population of approximately 19,000 people. It has been the county seat of Lenoir County since its formation in 1791, highlighting its historical significance in the region.
Founded as a planters' trading post in 1740 by William Heritage, the town was incorporated as Kingston in 1762, in honor of King George the third of England. The town's name was altered to Kinston in 1784, following the American Revolution, by dropping the "g" to move away from its royal association.
In the 20th century, North Carolina saw the emergence of new industries such as lumber and cotton mills, as local businessmen capitalized on processing their own agricultural products. The introduction of professional sports came with a minor league baseball team, adding a new dimension to the community's recreational activities. Further economic expansion was driven by the establishment of a DuPont facility for polyester fiber production, alongside pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. However, growth began to taper off after the 1960s due to the global relocation of textile manufacturing. Various attempts to revitalize the economy have seen mixed outcomes.
