Knowing that he didn't even make championship money in the UFC (500k) and is now making more than 800k per fight is insane. Super happy for him, what a guy and what an athelete.

DJ seems like the exact type of man you want in the spotlight to show us young men what it means to be a true gentleman. It’s sad that I haven’t heard of him and his amazing values more!
Yeah it is very sad. But like the video said. He didn't sell well. He wasn't the drama freaks the ufc wanted and the audience wantd. I am very glad I sore this video.

Demetrious Johnson is a legend. He escaped his rough childhood, developed an unbelievable skillset and became one of the, if not THE best fighter in the world. And he did it all without compromising his values and beliefs, without putting up a facade. He's the definition of a rolemodel.
I literally just watched DJ beat Moraes the same way Moraes beat him in the first fight and become the ONE flyweight champion. Absolutely incredible. What a legend
Even more impressive considering that usually when fighters change promotions their careers go downhill, especially when the rules are different. Eddie Alvarez went to ONE as well, and got smashed. DJ even had his first stoppage loss in the promotion, but came back in epic fashion. The dude is a wizard
UFC could never erase the great Demetrious Johnson. Dude is an MMA GOAT and legend. It's why he was bigger than UFC and was great outside of it. You can't stop greatness and his entire career proves it.
Ive always disliked Cejudo. mostly from taking DJ's belt and being a cringe lord. But I've always thought it was cool that they worked together after DJ left UFC
Before my dad passed away he was the biggest fan of "his" Mighty Mouse. He loved everything about DJ and watched everything about him from interviews to fights to videos like this, and he was always so proud when DJ won and reacted as though they personally knew each other. If my dad saw the shit Dana was talking about Mighty Mouse he'd probably have run the block on him.
Who's cutting onions? LOL damn bro that was such a powerful line, and all the proof you would need that he is a quintessential man. Having fear of failing your children is proof you're ready
God damn man, what a doc. The part where Cejudo shows up and they're training together actually got me choked up. This was a hell of a video man - from one film maker to another, you crushed this.

I watched Rodtang fight with Demetrious. It was marvelous. It was as much a show of physical power as well as tactic and emotions. It was the first time I saw Rodtang hesitate or even afraid. The first part seeing Rodtang domination with his aggressive style of striking and taking punches, then seeing him being cautious because of the awareness of his weakness when it comes to grabbling. Wonderful fight!
Man! It showed the instinct of a predator vs a predator. Perfect adaptation from rodtang. DJ was just too experienced for him to be honest. It's like DJ doesn't age too.
It's honestly amazing how successful the UFC has become when you realize just how bad they are at marketing their fighters. There was absolutely no need for DJ to be a loud mouth trashtalker. All the UFC had to do to get people invested in him was show his true story. Make a documentary just like this one. Sure people like drama, but people also like an underdog that they can relate to. DJ was not seen as an underdog because all we saw of him was the professional side where he dominated. Had we been shown his personal side and his struggles in life he would have been seen as the underdog that made it, plus he would have been extremely relateable to a lot of people.
Exactly this! The UFC use to tell stories that inspired, but they have gotten lazy and would rather create stupid dramas. Dana White did his thing, but the UFC needs a refresh. It’s stale AF.
That’s definitely a serious marketing mistake. I hope they learn from this and possibly amend things, since this guy should be an example for young people.
@@whitewhale9012 Lol, that's how you make everything into a fucking clownshow... just get logan paul to fight everyone It's his job to fight, it's the UFC's job to find people to watch the fights
Despite being the guy who won unfairly against DJ (and I think he might realize that), Cejudo has always been a good guy. I had no doubt that he would want to help someone just to see them get better.
Now that's what I call an all time champion, through n through, in and out. Humble, responsible, respectful and professional. The young generation of fighters can learn so much from this man. He is a pure example of a fighter with great character.
As a smaller guy and fan of the technical aspect of MMA, I've always been a Mighty Mouse fan. Guy is so well-rounded and a class act outside the cage. He deserves way more attention and respect.
I’m glad this video is getting millions of views. It’ll spread the message of DJ’s greatness, and show what an honorable man looks like to all these Conor and Masvidal fans.
None of the documentaries or MMA reviews can compete with yours man! Absolute masterpiece, everything is made so well, it’s holding you like a Netflix movie from the first second till the end. Can’t watch something else then your documentaries. It’s inspiring, it’s heartbreaking, it’s game changer, keep going bro!
He’s exactly what we need to look up to in the sport yet Dana didn’t like him. He’s a good family man and a fighter, so many young men without fathers could’ve benefited from seeing his story here in America
But he don't sell PPV and Dana is a businessman. Dana couldn't care less about role models or whatnot and why should he? It's all about the dollar bills to him
@@MelonWaterMelon777 Dana is a vulture, a greed driven egomaniac. Yes he is phenomenal at business, but there is more to life than money for folks with a soul.
@@MelonWaterMelon777 Bullshit lol. DJ was a test subject to find out that flyweights can't head a card. The issue is, his dominance demanded much more than what he was marketed. Look at Brandon Moreno. The dude is the perfect co main if he could stay champ. The UFC markets him and therefore people want to tune in. Imagine if the UFC did that with DJ. Instead, it was DJ as the header, DJ doesn't sell, DJ no longer marketable and gets silently put on as co main.
I thought the whole "We do not speak his name" at the beginning was kind of ridiculous given what I know about the dj story so I chose not to watch it. Little too thick for me and makes we not as willing to trust anything else the guy says in the docu
Mighty Mouse is probably the most technical fighter this generation has seen. Such an amazing humble guy too! Replies to all my comments on his amazing podcasts. His fight IQ is off the charts! Him and Cejudo forging a friendship is honestly the best thing made my day!
Thank you Patrick, it’s been a long while I saw and teared up and got inspired, he is definitely a role model for young men out there hustling and juggling and still don’t complain and reach end goals
Seeing where DJ is at and Conor is at right now, really speaks a lot. DJ may earn less, but he seems to have a more stable life with a better environment to support him
I disagree....Conors fighting persona is mostly fake, Conor just understands the value of entertainment and capitalizes on it. DJ doesn't care for it. To each their own. Doesn't mean Conors environment is less supportive and less stable.
@@stevegwizzle3560 Conor has ties to the irish mob and sometimes drives in extreamly load cars through his home town and knock people out at the pub you call that stable?
@@whatyoumeanmyboi3700 good point, let me rephrase what I said. IF Connor wanted to, he could have a more stable life while still being able to capitalize on his drama. But he CHOOSES to put himself in dangerous situations and environments
@@whatyoumeanmyboi3700 That's just being irish. Whereas he explicitly stated before he was famous that he intended to be the "Stonecold" Steve Austin of MMA and turn MMA into WWE, with drama and acting. Being the best fighter was just a step on the path to his actual goal, he was never in it for the sport and didn't care to stay in the sport. Whether that's since gone to his head or not, it's not really comparable to a humble man whose only intent is to be the best fighter he can be and feed his family. Ultimately DJ didn't belong to the UFC because the UFC values are in line with an American audience (drama, reality tv shows, etc.) He belongs with the Eastern fighters because they are in it for the mastery/glory/fun of the sport... drama wouldn't even be possible there because of the language barriers lmao. It's comparing apples to oranges, even though I'm all for hating on the American cultural empire. But frankly I agree his fights in the UFC look boring AF, whereas his fights in ONE are way more entertaining to watch. Maybe because his opponents are better, or maybe because America sucks, idk idc. Dana White is a piece of trash but I'm not gona act like DJ deserved to be king of the UFC, he's insanely lucky they even had a division for guys who are 5ft4 to fight in... because that's not nearly the average height in the West.
That fucking killed me man, when he said he was nervous cause he didn’t know what a father does. He was, and still is, one of the GOATs. As a person, as a fighter, as a father.
I felt that too. I grew up without a dad after the age of 9 and had no clue what to do when my wife told me I was going to be a dad. It’s the craziest and scariest feeling knowing you’re going to have to teach yourself how to be not only a dad, but a good one. But typically people that grow up without parents or in a single parent home they learn how to teach themselves things. I believe it somehow has made me a much better father and I’m sure if you asked Demetrius the same question he’d have the same answer. Didn’t such any less hearing it though.
His strength of character is immense. He had every excuse to cultivate a destructive lifestyle but he made a positive & progressive paradigm shifting choice. An awesome family Man, an inspiration to all & a great fighter. Multiple Championship belts but still humble.

Set him not to succeed! Are you fucking kidding me! Dana pushed the flyweight devision for YEARS! He kept trying to force interest in DJ, was selling him as the next GSP or Silva! DJ himself couldn’t draw himself! You could give him a green marker and paper and DJ couldn’t draw cash! So when that became clear Dana wanted out of the DJ business. @Marcus Marr American? Last I checked, ufc does well globally and guys like Conor came up through his home country FIRST. I've seen global sports reactions, foreign fans during soccer? US sports dont come close to the clown behavior globally. I'm Brazil 100k people riot in Sau Paulo after the two local teams play. In Columbia they've killed refs over soccer, in the UK knife fights, pub brawls over futbol so please dont act like the US leads in out of character behavior
Man, really made me cry. There’s a lot of athletes who come from damaged backgrounds, but the most they can ever show for it is some fame and money. This man has really made an example of himself, a truly inspiring story and figure, who shows that you don’t need to be the asshole, the bully, the abuser or anything toxic and instead self identifies as a nerd and just so happens to a happily married father and one of the greatest sportsmen in history - he’s a hero. Take a bow! 🙇♂️
Cry because he can't be the champion all the time? You must cry a lot for the hundreds of fighters who never get a shot. He's a millionaire. MMA is his hobby.
It's a damn shame how the UFC treated him. Literally one of if not the greatest fighter of all time and a great human being on top of that. He is a true role model for all young kids, especially the ones growing up on the "other side of the tracks"! These are the type of people we should be celebrating and putting up on pedestals, not worthless entertainers who are drug addicts. I agree, however it is up to us to support what we want to see. Once I became aware of DJ I watched everything that had his name on it. That's how we make being a positive role model sellable.
I remember watching the UFC fight where he throws a dude to the ground and in mid air, in the middle of the throw, catches his arm and submits him with an armbar. I could not believe my eyes. That was the craziest finish I had ever seen. A movie choreographer couldn't come up with something like that. It was unreal.

Blessing in disguise, imo. DJ does not have a UFC (or any American sport) vibe, especially in the media. Singapore and ONE are the perfect place for him, where skills trump all.
It’s so sad here. American culture values drama and story over raw talent and true character. Never realized how great Might Mouse really was as a fighter and person until watching this.

Please, make more videos like this that stays to the truth of things while opening people's eyes, especially the fight fans' eyes, to those things.
So glad I saw this video. I only got into UFC/MMA recently (past 2 years or so). I heard about Demetrious from that Muay Thai/MMA rule fight. When I looked up his UFC record, I was in shock. No one really talks about him and he had a record like that? I wanted to see what made him so great. So I look up his name to watch some fights on ESPN +... Only to find out there isn't a single fight of his on there. That is really a shame, and I hope it wasn't another example of the UFC trying to scrub his legacy clean.

Demetrious seems so humble. I guess the UFC has no place for humble folks. ONEFC is a great opportunity for Demetrious. Thank you for this Documentary!💯🙏🏼
When i saw henry cejudo at the end, it literally brought chills down my spine. One of the finest piece of documentary in MMA scene. DJ was, is and will be a GOAT forever.
Outstanding work on this documentary! While it elevated Johnson to the status he deserves, it gives us a lot to chew on regarding our cultural values and why such a hard-working, upstanding, best of his era fighter can be cast aside so readily while a promotion continues to advocate for truly despicable characters instead. DJ is a model citizen, a true martial artist, and an inspiration. He is an embodiment of the qualities to which more people should aspire.
The thing that bothers me, is that this excuse, like all the others, buckles under closer scrutiny. DJ is boring? Tell that to his suplex-to-armbar combo that would make Tekken's King look slow as shit. DJ has a "predictable" reign? UFC never had a problem promoting champs with long reigns like GSP or Anderson Silva. DJ is too nice and doesn't trash talk? Dana literally promoted the first McGregor-Poirier rematch as two nice guys being nice and professional. Dana hates champs who say no to his booking decisions? Tell that to UFC Hall-of-Famer and alleged perennial wife beater Jon Jones. DJ doesn't draw? One of his lowest-drawing PPVs didn't even have him on the main card, it was UFC darling Tony Ferguson.
I don’t think people cast him aside or didn’t like him. It’s hard to tune in to fighters your not invested in. Like Conor like him or hate him he did a great job at making people tune in. Then jon Jones and gsp who were beating legends to get to the belt. D.J. Would have gotten that if he beat dom or had that fight with TJ. But if you look back at his ufc career he was a very quiet respectful guy who was beating people a lot of us had no idea who they were.

Dana is a real pos, like only wants to destroy good and promote evil type of person. Mighty Mouse is the proof, so objectively good that Dana couldn't tolerate his existence.
He is a true role model for all young kids, especially the ones growing up on the "other side of the tracks"! These are the type of people we should be celebrating and putting up on pedestals, not worthless entertainers who are drug addicts. Alas doing the right thing, doing good deeds and being a good husband and father doesn't sell, according to the marketing geniuses.

Can't "erase" Mighty Mouse. He's the man. He didn't make the UFC the most money but he had an amazing run. 11 title defenses? Yea. Can't take that away. Respect!
He didn’t figure our his own mother was near completely deaf until he was 14, and she was born that way? Her commitment to lip reading and speech therapy must have been unlike anyone else, I’d really like to hear more about her!
Crazy. These fighters are heroes in so many levels.

Only different being , while volk appears to have no genuine holes in his game , similar to Mighty Mouse having no holes, while volk is for sure very well rounded, unlike dj volk is still not as genuinely good at everything. Volk has good bjj defense but he doesn’t have great bjj, like dj. Dj just was on another lvl, the guy had phenomenal striking, he had really good wrestling and wrestling defense, he had great bjj, great bjj defense. Volk has a lot of these things but does lack a solid bjj offense the way dj did

If it makes you feel better, ben askren flopped hard in the UFC and dj has become one of the most respected fighters in ONE. Tiny bit of poetic justice.
@@3XZDgg it’s not that it makes me feel better, it is the fact that the man literally did nothing wrong and they treated him like the villain and gave him the Chris Benoit treatment, that WWE gave to the wrestler that killed his family, never mentioning him, like he’s the bad guy, when DJ did absolutely nothing wrong but win his fights and not trash his opponents, but treat them with respect
This is exactly why Colby Covington (which I tend to believe is naturally a nice guy) decided to change his persona to a heel so he’s more interesting. Clickbait title though
When it showed Cejudo joining him as a training partner I got a bit emotional. It shows the true brotherhood some fighters have underneath all the flash.
First DJ beat Rodtang, Then after he lost to Moralez Cejudo joined him as training partner for rematch. He seems to enjoy famly life with the wife and kids.. He seems to not miss UFC one bit.

So glad I saw this video. I only got into UFC/MMA recently (past 2 years or so). I heard about Demetrious from that Muay Thai/MMA rule fight. When I looked up his UFC record, I was in shock.
The devil runs Hollywood didn't you know
Exactly what I think and said !😔
I don’t think people cast him aside or didn’t like him. I know he is a great fighter and probably still one of the best in his weight class but a lot of times if your not beating big names or people the fans know no one’s going to pay attention.
