How Paimon LEAKED Her Own Identity | Genshin Impact Theory

  • In this Genshin Impact Theory video, I will attempt to speculate on who Paimon really is. Is she the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles? The God of Time? A Seelie? Interestingly, we've already got a lot of clues in regards to finally explaining who Paimon is, because Paimon LEAKED her own identity without any of us realizing it.
This is the first video of my five part Genshin Impact Theory series. Throughout these videos, I will speculate on the entire story of Genshin Impact. But before we discuss everything about the game, we need to first try and identity who Paimon actually is. Is it possible that Paimon actually leaked her own identity throughout the game and we just didnt know about it? And what is the meaning of the False Sky that Scaramouche mentioned?
What are the secrets hidden behind the world of Genshin Impact and the existence of the traveler?
Hopefully this is a good starting to point to finally uncover the entire story of Genshin Impact.

I always figured that it could be that Paimon is from Celestia, but has amnesia, and will probably remember everything when we get to that point in the story, at which point she will end up being either the Upholder of Heavenly Principles herself, a fragment of her similar to how Kun Jun was a fragment of Azhdaha, or a god who for some reason opposed the Upholder of Heavenly Principles and had to take drastic measures to escape from her but lost her memories as a result.

Paimon is definitely an Archon or another kind of divine being. All current Archons go by many names but one of them are always from the Ars Goetia (a real book, known as The Book of Demons). Barbatos (Venti), Morax (Zhongli), Baal (Raiden), Buer (Nahida) and Focalor (Hydro Archon), are all names from the demons of the Ars Goetia. Her design is very reminiscent of Dainsleaf and the Abyss Order as well. I can safely assume she’s from Khaenri’ah. Possibly their forgotten/erased Archon. Makes sense as they claim they have no God and Paimon can’t recall her memories.
She’s definitely a much bigger piece in the story than she seems. She doesn’t have that name by chance.

One thing that really stood out to me was when we first met the sentient mushroom deep in the chasm. At one point in the dialog, the mushroom, sensing Paimon's presence, described her as a "two-legged hatchling".
I think it stood out to me for two main reasons: First, Paimon is rarely remarked on in any substantial way. Secondly, of all manner's of coming into the world, why specifically "hatched"? It's neither how mushrooms (fungi) or people (mammals) are born, which would both have more familar ways of referencing. Perhaps it's because Paimon floats/flys like an insect or bird, but it certainly fits with the Primordial one being "birthed from an egg".

Teyvat being a prison at least explains why the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles wouldn't let the travelers leave. Also I like Albedo because he was the first character to actually question Paimon's existence and try to find out what she is, and what she's capable of (blasting 10 feet through stone, making waterfalls flow backwards). I believe this whole "Teyvat is a prison" thing also fits well with the Fatui's goal. They are collecting all the Gnosis' for some reason, and what I think that reason is is to escape Teyvat, or essentially "break" the jail. Destroy the gods that put them there. The Gnosis are like a super battery of divine power, so gathering all the gnosis' would possibly make you strong enough to beat these figures that represent the constraints of mankind. The Fatui aren't evil. Their methods are definitely evil, but their end goal is not (why I think all the fatui we talk to seem to believe they are protecting everyone).

Another tidbit that stuck with me was Paimon's investment in the dead adventurer's story ("Thus was the Work Done in Vain") from last year's Golden Apple Archipelago event. Throughout the quest line, even Paimon recognized that, logically, they can't change what happened to Wolfgang, and yet she begged the traveler to try anyway. The writer in me looks at this and recognizes either, a character who has lived through/seen the same pattern and has an unconscious need to take action where they couldn't in a past event, OR a character who has the subconscious muscle memory of being able to do something about it, in this case, changing fate.
Paimon's almost hyper-fixation on helping Wolfgang almost feels like a child's inability to fully grasp the concept of death, and if we were to go way out on a limb and superimpose Nahida's current state as a child god coming about through expending her power and physically regressing because of it, suddenly Paimon's childish tendencies make more sense through this theory crack lens as well...
I don't know, I just think about it sometimes. Mihoyo is known to hide big lore in small crevices during one time events and this was very in depth for essentially a side quest.

@@kilerdude5660 so far we have two concrete examples and one theoretical example of a god expending their power and shrinking. It happened to Rukkhadevata shrinking into Kusanali, The Stove God shrinking into Guoba(s), and theoretically Asmoday/God of Time shrinking into Paimon. Out of all of them, the Stove God is the weakest, so it makes sense Guoba barely has any memories. I didn't say no memories, because it seemed like he still remembers Zhongli.
Rukkhadevata was absolutely smarter and more powerful than the Stove God, so when Kusanali was found, she had no memory of being Rukkhadevata, but she did have her wisdom intact for the most part.
Now in Paimon's case, her original form is more than likely more powerful and knowledgeable (debatable) than both the Stove God and Rukkhadevata, so even after shrinking, she retains some intelligence and memories, but like the other two, she has no memories of being whatever original god she theoretically used to be.
But then again, we still don't know exactly how these shrinking gods work, my guess is the more powerful/smart the god, the more knowledge/power they retain when they shrink

Paimon could also be a fragment of Phanes's consciousness, since the Demiurge also loves humans dearly. Paimon is the P.O.'s goodwill and love for humans personified, even though they might be sealed away. This is the same thing that happened with Azhdaha, sealed and eroded but the consciousness divided itself in order to perform one last act of goodwill for Liyue, which is to lead Morax and the Traveller to help establish the barrier again to keep Azhdaha from destroying Liyue. And Teyvat is basically getting destroyed recently so since PO created this world he probably can feel what's going on and coincidentally appeared before the Traveler to use them as catalyst to save Teyvat.
Edit: And once Teyvat is saved and the purpose is fulfilled, Paimon will disappear.

We also get a major lore dump about the Traveler not being of this world but the "sibling" you have been chasing after IS from Teyvat, which is crazy. This actually made me think that the Traveler is that unknown God that mimicked the appearance of the "sibling" and overwrite both of their memories to think they are twins. The language used during the archon quest is that we are not OF this world, but our sibling is. In windblume, one of Sucrose's thoughts when trying to figure out the "find me a flower that is not of this world" part of the prophecy, she suggests that there is a difference between "OF this world" and "FROM this world" being two different things, which if that's true, our sibling could be FROM the same place we are but something's happened to make them fully integrated into Teyvat. She wanted to manipulate the twins into shattering the Eggshell hence why she attacked them and cast them out instead of letting them go onto the next world as they wanted. However, only one twin ended up becoming 'evil' like she wanted instead of both since they ended up falling into different time periods. Now, one is going down a path that will result in shattering the Eggshell if they succeed in their endeavours while the other is protecting Teyvat and being a thorn in the Unknown God's side potentially ruining their plans.

I don’t know this next line perfectly but it goes something like:
“Traveler.. paimon doesn’t know how to say it but we should come back here later” and behind that wall there are tons of treasure chests being watched over by an aranara)
but it’s sus because there is literally no way she or the traveler could have known that, this is either a hint that paimon can sense treasure like seelies, a hint that paimon has been here before/the world is running in a loop (something Nahida confirmed), or that the devs wanted a lazy way to hint about the treasure but it seems to specific to be a throwaway line and paimon has a sus reputation for stuff like this

A while back I was researching a lot of demons because I was curious about why archons had demon names, and I feel like quite a few people already know but paimon is also a demon name so I decided to dig up some more stuff about this demon king that could be used for more theorising.
First of all, “paimon is one of the Kings of Hell and more obedient to Lucifer than other kings are.” Lucifer means ‘shining one’ or ‘light-bearer’, Lumine means ‘light’ or ‘to light up’ and Aether means multiple similar things: the heavens, the air or sky, the upper world or the brightness surrounding a deity. As you can see lumine, aether and lucifer himself seem to have some connection to light *and* paimon.
Here are also some of paimon’s powers with a few similarities to our little in-game friend: “In Abramelin, King Paimo(n)'s powers include knowledge of past and future events, clearing up doubts, making spirits appear, creating visions (👀), acquiring and dismissing servant spirits, reanimating the dead for several years, flight (we know she can float), remaining underwater indefinitely (we fished her out of the ocean), and general abilities to "make all kinds of things" and "all sorts of people and armor appear" at the behest of the magician.”
    Also:
“The Goetia and Weyer specify that his knowledge includes all arts and "secret Things", such as knowledge regarding the Earth, its waters, and the winds.” And “with the former source also claiming that he can reveal hidden treasures” similar to a seelie, right?
And to go deeper into the “paimon is a seelie” theory here’s what the seelie wiki says: “According to legend, Seelie are the remnants of a bygone race that once held beautiful forms and immense wisdom and used it to guide mankind; travelling alongside them and teaching them languages and "philosophies of nature". They had palaces outside the realm the gods currently hold authority over which may be referring to Celestia or, more likely, the Dark Sea.” I mean paimon travels alongside us too and she literally refers to herself as our guide. There’s also a bit about one of the seelie’s ancestor meeting a traveller from afar and falling in love with them… although I hope that’s not the case with us.

Mihoyo has stated a long time ago that the characters we obtain in game are "dream versions" of the story/real characters. The reason we even pull on banners is due to Paimon's abilities. Primordial gems = primogems. Paimon in real life lore is a demon who can breathe underwater forever, can copy abilities and humans, and has time/space abilities if I remember correct. The characters we collect are copies created by Paimon, not meant to be the story characters joining our party. Only the traveler/player can see them, just as only the traveler/player can see teleport points and other features. Paimon used copies of the Unknown God's cubes in the Jade Chamber battle for a few frames. Albedo is artificial life with his own evil twin copy. Could it be Paimon has a connection to Albedo?
This part is always controversial to people, but I thought maybe Paimon was sent from Celestia to spy on the traveler. It would explain her belief she will separate from the traveler some day. It would explain why Paimon was there drowning the moment he woke up. Lore stated the mythology demon Paimon can breathe underwater, so perhaps she was ordered to pretend to drown to avoid the traveler's suspicion when he woke up. If this is the case, she probably waited the entire time for the traveler to awaken. Her goal may be to copy the traveler's world crossing abilities so Celestia can be Gods of parallel worlds instead of only Teyvat. People have told me: no Paimon probably just lost her memories so she really was drowning. Seems too sussy still that she was drowning just as he wakes up.
When we learn Paimon's identity it will most likely be around the time we go to Celestia to fight a final boss or semi-final boss, leading me to believe she either rebels Celestia or is with them and sharing their goals. If she is with Celestia, further evidence is that she has this habit of loving to sidetrack traveler and has him explore all regions. While always seeming eager agreeing to side quests and helping people out. Time is of the essence if Paimon really wants Aether to find his sister soon. I think Aether wants to join his sister first, then explore and save the world later. It seems like Paimon wants the journey to progress a certain way for her own motives. Paimon is the one who blocks us from traveling to unreleased regions.
Paimon might even know where Lumine is and she may know all that Lumine has done while Aether was sleeping. Paimon's task from Celestia could be: spy on the traveler/lead him in the wrong direction/ prevent him from joining forces with Lumine/don't let him travel through the regions too quickly/and lead him to Celestia so you can copy his world hopping power for the Gods to gain.
If she is a rebel of Celestia instead, it means Celestia orders her to do things or else get killed, so she obeys until she has a chance to fight back with the traveler (endgame)
I don't believe she has amnesia, she wouldn't be hiding the fact she can use the cube power from Aether and everyone. She would probably not remember how to copy powers/people or how to manipulate time. It would make sense for her to remember every power she was besides breathe underwater. She obviously waited for the traveler to wake up, unlikely it was fate they met the way they did.
She seems genuinely nice at times so maybe she is risking her life to rebel Celestia's orders, then again she hasn't been honest either.
No one in Teyvat recognizes Paimon so she either lived underwater for a long time or arrived from Celestia before the traveler woke up.
A huge question I still have is where is the Sustainer now and what is she up to? Does Lumine being with the Abyss Order have anything to do with Celestia/Paimon? Is Rosaria the only character suspicious of Paimon? At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Aether is already suspicious of Paimon.

Actually, its quite likely that Paimon is the archon of stars (which is the eighth element used by Dainslief) and the archon of Khaenri'ah. After the Irminsul reveal I read a reddit post that theorized that she was erased from Irminsul after the catalycism. That is why nobody remembers her, and why Khaenri'ah was claimed to have no archon. That is why the sky is fake - because after she was erased, Celestia had to replace her with a fake sky. It is also why she has star motifs (along with Dainslief), why the abyss is filled with stars, why stars are such an important piece of the worldbuilding, and why she can control the day and night - she doesnt control time, she controls the sky to bring in stars
Another thing to note is that Paimon is quite definitely the king piece because of Khaenri'ahs importance, the design of her head and the fact that Khaenri'ah is the last place the Traveller goes to (Venti is the queen because Monstadt is where the traveller **arrives**), and because the queen - anemo - is related to the sky, which the new element of Astro is related to too

One thing I really want to know more about is the Traveller. What are they? Where did they come from? How many worlds have they been to? During the Sumeru Archon quest, the Traveller gets their fortune told to them and the fortune teller freaks out because they find out that the Traveller is destined to live for thousands of years. Now the fortune teller freaked out because she assumed the Traveller was human and humans cannot naturally live for that long... but what bugs me is that Paimon initially says the fortune teller is a load of waffle and lies but after the teller says Traveller will live for thousands years Paimon VERY CASUALLY agrees and says this fortune is true... EXCUSE ME WTF?!! The Traveller and Nahida (The God of Wisdom) were also there and they also agree with the this fortune. This proves that the Traveller's body and its constitution is on the same level (or even beyond the level) of the strongest gods.
What REALLY bugs is how the Traveller is constantly referred to as a child (such all those times alcohol is not served to them because of the Traveller's youthful appearance), but the Traveller NEVER corrects the other characters about their age. Is the Traveller an immortal who happens to actually be a kid who hasn't yet lived for a long time or an immortal with an already long lived life who is pretending to be a kid? How much does Paimon know of the Traveller's special body and age?? It is not like the Traveller is even attempting to hide their alien body because they casually mention to everyone they meet how they are capable of wielding all the elements without a vision or how their body has special properties such as the purification of Abyss magic or their easy access to Irminsul. The Traveller practically boasts about their body's inhumanity but never talks about their age OR ELABORATE MORE ABOUT THEIR POWERS FROM 500 YEARS AGO!!! Remember, the Traveller is supposed to be able to fly with wings and summon a golden sword but the Unknown God took these powers away... HOW??? Does the Traveller not have another world they could travel to and bring weapons, new wings or something strong to help them? Have they lost the power to travel to other worlds? Were they travelling to other planets or Universes? Wherever the Traveller and their twin are initially from, are there no doctors who specialise in healing their special alien bodies?? Are the Traveller and their twin the only one of their species??? Why does their twin care so much for Teyvat and helping the Abyss, I mean this is the same twin who entered Teyvat 500 years ago only to flee the moment they saw an ongoing war. They initially didn't care to find out what was going on or if they could help, so why is Teyvat suddenly special and worthy of saving? What did the twin experience after the Unknown God separated both twins? WHY DID THE UNKNOWN GOD ATTACK THEM BUT NOT KILL THEM AND INSTEAD CHOSE TO SEPARATE THEM THROUGH TIME???
WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN?!?!??!?!?!!

Assuming she is the primordial one you left out an obvious detail being that "Paimon" is like a shortened version -anagram- of "Primordial One" which is part of why I agree she is. I started on the theory that she's connected with leylines and then I came across this: "King Paimon's powers include knowledge of past and future events, clearing up doubts, making spirits appear, creating visions, flight, and general abilities to make all kinds of things and all sorts of people appear" which *could* be inspiration. In mythology Phanes is described as "a first-born god of light who emerged from a void or watery abyss and gives birth to the universe" (Her eyes + cloak look like the abyss/universe) and lastly Phanes in Genshin is described as 'androgynous in nature' and even though she looks like a small feminine child Paimon mostly -never- didn't refer to self as any specific gender it's *usually* in third person and we already know that the 7 at least can change and take on different forms - including gender. Edit: Elaborate some more and a few corrections have been made, I also left a short explanation in comments before more people go correcting the same things ❤

And I've ALWAYS remembered that Kazuha addressed *both* Paimon and the traveler. It would make no sense if he addressed both characters only to describe one of them. Guoba also shows hints of who he was, even though he lost his memory. Like, he still loves cooking and he recognizes Zhongli and his old friends. Island's thought that Paimon is unknowingly dropping hints about her identity is totally valid as well!

Actually this theory is very close to what I was thinking about (especially which mentioned in the first part of the video and not in the second 'cause I didn't make that huuuuuuge research!).
7:45 this reminds me about the contract which Morax made and because of which he was not able to tell anything to Traveler about what happened in Khaenri'ah 500 years ago; and "...stay oblivious to certain secret, mankind will continue to receive blessings from the gods..." reminds me about the forbidden knowledge which caused Eleazar, Withering zones etc.
8:51 and here I was reminded about the cutscene which we can see every time in the beginning of every BP period...
I have no idea how exactly this relates to the whole story, it just what I was reminded about, but I definitely feel some relations here...
This theory is amazing, I like it very much, hehe. Thank you for your work! :D

I believe that Paimon is the same creature as Phanes. Phanes might have also created Paimon as a reference of itself. Phanes might have also probably also made Paimon immortal and made sure Paimon didn’t know her own origin, to make it more *~mysterious~.*
Or Paimon formed from what she is. Paimon probably formed from food, and became *emergency food.*

I have a couple theories that this video made me think about:
    1) Along with the 4 shades representing the artifacts, I think the Unknown God represents the Ciclet of Logos because she is literally referred to as the sustainer of heavenly principles, thus she is likely the embodiment of heavenly logic. Her banishing the twins and saying along the lines of “the arrogance of mankind stop now” is likely not out of maliciousness but out of duty to uphold the law that has been set and the separation of divinity and mankind
    2) Paimon could be a shade or she is similar to Venti that she was just kinda like a spirit thing. From what I remember Venti was said he was just like “a spirit among a thousand winds” or something, meaning that he was probably a piece of something of a bigger whole. My theory is that Paimon is similar that she is simply a piece of a larger whole. I didn’t know about the Celestial Eggshell situation so my theory is that Paimon is either a piece of the eggshell that was chipped or a star that got knocked down from the sky.
I think this cuz Paimon has a lot of moon/starry sky stuff, plus she is so small and kind of like a fragment of hope for the Traveler for finding their sibling, always reminding them of their reason for journeying- helping them remember their purpose.
Also I always found it so weird that Paimon was fished out of water by the Traveler, made me think of a falling asteroid that fell into the ocean. Assuming the place the twins were captured in was the Heavens and there is possibly a separator between Heaven and Earth, the only way the Traveler could have been transferred was probably through the sky shell . I like to imagine that the Traveler was chucked from the Heavens, fell through the sky and knocked into Paimon on their way down and sent her down to Teyvat as well- which explains why Paimon was found so close to the Traveler

Maybe the twins travelling among the stars (beyond the egg shell) was seen as the ultimate human transgression and triggered Khaenriah’s punishment ?
After all, Kaenriah might have been the place they stayed in when visiting Teyvat.
This would explain why the other twin was so overwhelmed with Khaenriah’s destruction.
After all, Khaenrians were evil land pirates who looted other nations as a way of living. Why would any of the nice travellers associate with them ? But if the travellers unwillingly caused Khaenriah’s destruction, the one who witnessed might have felt guilty and resented the injustice of Teyvat’s divinities.

It's worth noting that inside the Domains, there are some interesting things to observe around the petrified trees specifically. Another RUclipsr pointed out that there are five "crowns" suspended around those petrified Irmunsul, each one of which seems to represent the Primordial One and its Shining Shades.
But there's also a pattern on the floor that you stand on to receive the Domain's reward that resembles a three-leafed clover or a Celtic knot. Notice where else that exact same symbol shows up? That's right, the front of Paimon's outfit. She's wearing her alignment with Celestia front and center, whether knowingly or not.

edit: I just compared the two, and the symbol on paimon chest is more triangular-like while on mora it’s more round, maybe it’s not supposed to represent mora.. still makes me question though, is this a design repetition error or intentional?

first, in the Caribert quest, Paimon doesn't seem to be affected by the Sinner. (sorry i already forgot what happened in this quest)
second and the more important one is that in Fontaine's archon quest, Paimon accidentally drinks Navia's drink, later on we learn that water from the Primordial Sea was added into it and it doesn't affect her in any way.

With the introduction of the Akasha, it caused a thought to enter into my head. As Dottore used it for, a subconscious thought was planted into the townspeople that the Traveler was someone who had just saved the world so they could provide a distraction.
A lot of people in Genshin Impact don’t really comment on or question Paimon’s existence. Let’s say Paimon is a part of or the Primordial One. If the world of Tevyat is a prison that stops people from ascending, then it can stand to reason that subconscious thoughts can be planted in their heads to stop the prison break. One of those subconscious suggestions could be “don’t question particular existences” such as the Sacred Sakura, tho that was Makoto’s doing, or the existence of Paimon. I would find it absolutely insane if that were true, and that’s why almost no one really questions Paimon at all. It’s built into the world so that people do not question Tevyat or discover the truth, or so that Paimon won’t discover who she really is.
