Krista Donaldson: The $80 prosthetic knee that's changing lives

  • We've made incredible advances in technology in recent years, but too often it seems only certain fortunate people can benefit. Engineer Krista Donaldson introduces the ReMotion knee, a prosthetic device for above-knee amputees, many of whom earn less than $4 a day. The design contains best-in-class technology and yet is far cheaper than other prosthetics on the market.

    Hello Lauritz, thank you for speaking up. I fully agree with you and as a practitioner in Prosthetics and Orthotics (CPO) with 25 years of experience, I agree with you. It is the fitting of the socket that matters and that is delivered by a skilled workforce.
    True, the availability of technology is a major hindering factor...but a 20'000 € high end knee joint is a piece of junk if not used correctly and aligned to make if fit into the technical unit of a prosthetic device and more importantly to be adjusted and tuned to the user who needs to be trained and instructed in the use of the device too.
    Addressing the need for more low cost quality technology to be available is certainly addressing a key area...the question left to me is...where does the workforce come from???
    Personally I studied for 4.5 years to learn my trade and that can not / should not be replaced with a 6 months on the job training in. In addition, providing the necessary "hardware aka prosthetic or orthotic" device is essential...but physical rehabilitation is more and needs to be more than to buckle the prosthetic leg to the limb.

    As an amputee, On grateful for anyone like me being able to walk again, engaging in wholesome activities. Im a bk amputee with multiple mass removed from.my thigh. Ive had a prothesis which I was only able to use for a short period. If someone dreamed and achieve it, we can too. Thank you lady for those children, men and women. I hope your dream spreads all over the world, now they are to many of us, and most of us cannot afford them, or our insurances determine what happens ans still dont get what we really need. I don't wear a Prosthetic leg, I suffered to many injuries to the residual for attempting to wear one, of course I need to be better educated. I hope your heart and mind srd in the right place. Furthermore teach us or our caregivers if we have one, how to make our own if able.

    I am a below knee amputee, and the problem that still arises is that the shape of the socket (the covering around the amputated limb) needs to be adjusted frequently to the changing shape of the leg. Think of swelling during the different times of day, the constant shrinkage over time and weight gain or loss. I need to adjust my socket every few months because of scarring due to friction and many other reasons. Giving a leg that is all in well cheap for the poor residents is not sustainable from a once of gift point of view. A prosthetic leg is like an F1 drivers's racing seat that has to be precise in order to get the best fit with minimal friction that can cause discomfort or scarring. No matter whether your'e poor or rich, a prosthetic leg has to be a perfect fit otherwise the long term damage to a scared area could lead to pressure sores and then to infection, which is the reason I lost my leg in the first place. I really hope that 3D Printing would be able to help these people soon!

    6 months, that's a short follow-up as a benchmark. Amputees have to live with them their whol lives. So a more realistic goal would be to look at least 12 months- 5 years ahead, to get a sense of what the impact of the prosthesis is.

      Now that we have a President who cares for the people I would suggest that Medicare be educated of such new devices. I am an amputate of over 50 years, and have worked in the operated room for the past 40 years, as a surgical physician assistant. In my career I have assisted in thousands of surgeries and many were amputations (legs) but never have I ever assisted in any arms. One of the things that I have discover is a new amputee does not know what a good fit suppose to feel like. This is so important. Many companies are providing very poor service and taking advantage of patients. Now that I am retired I would love to get involved helping patients get the best possible limbs and prevent them from getting gouged. In my city I know who are good and those that are bad.

    the "market driven" is a brilliant idea. It means that the people really want it and if people want it then other people will find a way to get it to them. Brilliant.

    It's an amazing feat of engineering, for sure. It would be cool to have it's utility demonstrated a bit more, as opposed to those old low-end knees, but she gets her point across quite well despite that.
    I don't know about the Market Driven argument in this instance though. If this was about a product of optional use, something of convenience but of little consequence to the bigger picture, that would be another thing. But we're not talking about that here, after all. We're talking about a product which, in most cases, is absolutely essential to these people functioning at even close to normal levels (normal as in having two functioning legs). I have a hard time seeing that people in the third world who are missing a leg would get picky as long as the product improves their situation, no matter by how little.

      I can sort of understand how profitability matters.. The way i look at it is that in order for "cheap prosthetics" to become cheaper/better. they have to develop an (unfortunate, i might add) economic interest so that other companies/investors would be interested and provide the required funds/effort to expand production. Sometimes with government funding, they might not allow the company to sell it cheaply to other countries which would be a big hindrance..

    • @21081976mr

      I CANNOT ~ I would like you to come with me for a trip to Cambodia - I live in Thailand, respond when you're ready and perhaps your thoughts of monetary 'interest' will realign to reality; believe me when i say I'm ignored when I plead with all companies including Universities as there is no financial gain. Sadly you are correct, which angers me, the US rhetoric and bullshit, is only self servant. Big companies are making excessive quantities of money to assist a county they (in part) caused massive detrimental issues too.

    This is brilliant!! I just lost my leg 7 months ago due to blood clots. I just started rehab with my prosthetic leg. My gait has been severely affected, i find the socket quite clunky. Is your design much better than the fiberglass? If so where can i get one to buy?
    I also would love to partner with you to help people of Ghana. Please let me know if this is possible. Thank you.

    My 80 year old father had his right leg amputated in December and had a single axis knee and he has not been able to master it. We have paid over 3K out of pocket for something that he can't use. I wish I had known about this knee before hand. It would allow him to have his independence back. He has camped at the same campground for 21 years and would stay there for 8 months out of the year. He would only drive home once a month to pick up his pension check.
    He has just gone through another surgery to remove tumors Squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland. He still keeps his spirits up and has a great sense of humor. I would like to find a way to get some of his independence back. How can I find someone who offers these types of devices?

    I absolutely love this new concept you have here can you show how the knee looks like in the inside do you have a cut view sketch or drawing of this knee
    Reason why i am asking i am in Mongolia and i have a college and his brother has an amputation very high above the knee and i am busy helping him to 3d print a new leg and the knee is my problem at this point
    I had to buy a bigger printer and a scanner to get the profile of his leg now that is good it is only the knee that is stopping me to get him back on the leg
    If you cannot help me with a sketch then if it is possible can you send me a link were i can buy a knee like that your help will be much appreciated
    Thank you in advanced

    hmm are the people receiving these prosthesis receiving liners and socks? The size of the residual limb changes throughout the day. Are they given products to clean their residual limb to prevent infection? Do they make feet to match all skin tones? Are people available to make adjustments to the prosthesis?

    • @JavierD

      This is just about the knee, the socket and liner (which depends on the type of socket) is another topic. As far as I know, the Indian center at Jaipur creates the socket and other prosthetic elements to every person.

    It's very difficult to be an amputee in India esp if you do not belong to a richie rich family here.
    I have heard many a cos claiming big for their products but still there 's a big vacuum in way that prosthesis care is done/developed in India. They are quite expensive, not necessarily meet the amputee' needs, non adaptive, bulky etc.
    Jaipur foot is the only cheapest option available but again, it has own limitations even for knee-lock system.
    I am an amputee who struggle everyday to cope up with life challenge that my amputated foot throws at me and the totally unfriendly public infrastructure that is just not meant for people with disability.

    Profit margins can not be a factor in being humane. A prosthetic knee is not a car although both deal with mobility. A cheap car can get you where you need to go unless extra ordinary demands are required like out road terrain as well as a luxury, expensive car but a prosthetic knee is a replacement lost body part and having financial means dictate if you can walk more naturally is taking capitalism too far. Luxury is not functiinality, leather interiors do not mechanically make the vehicle get you there more efficiently or faster. Lets not charge for greater function and ability and call it compassion in giving ability back to the disabled at a price. This kind of consciousness takes you ever further away from what it is to be human or humane. Humanity doesn't start until you reach the heart chakra in Eastern thought which is contrary to making a profit from someone who only wants to be whole and functional again without concern for wealth. When health becomes synonymous with wealth we have crossed over into a consciousness less then human and have devolved into animal and selfishness through the lost if empathy.
    I speak as an amputee victim of a violent crime.

    Great! Now we can start focusing on prosthetic brains for the religious people.

      Have you been hurt by someone who is religious?

    • @ManInMostlyBlack
      @ManInMostlyBlack 10 лет назад +7

      m1tanker64 No? I don't know, does the dark ages count? Systematically covering for pedophile priests, teachings of not wearing condoms in Africa and killing people in aids, stoning atheists, stoning witches, hating and killing gay people, opposing gay marriage, generally promoting ignorance and dividing people, taking things on fate rather then promoting science, indoctrinating young children, systematically lying about the natural world, bigotry, teaching of the immoral concept sin, teaching the immoral concept about hell, taking away human rights, taking away women's rights to there own body, cutting away on young children's genitalia, halting scientific research on stem cells, halting progress in general, religious wars, the fact that whole world is retarded because of religion, believing things without a good reason. Should i go on?
      Its a rather stupid question don't you think?

      Prosthetic Brains will suffer the same Problems as normal Human brains and today's computers do: Crap goes in, crap comes out.
      Better install an BS-filter by means of early education.

    Eventually we will be able to 3d print this for $20.

    • @EDTHEWATERGUY
      @EDTHEWATERGUY 10 лет назад

      True for now but eventually 3d printers will cost as much as paper printers do today and they will also be donated all over the world much like cell phones.

    • @TheKataan
      @TheKataan 10 лет назад +2

      I like 3d printers because then you only need to donate one printer instead of all the different products. Even if a printer is expensive, you basically just need one per village/town.

    Does $80 include the cradle, the leg and the foot?
    Does it include the fee to get fitted?
    Also, why didn't this person get 18 minutes?

      Might be that she didn't have enough material make an 18 minute presentation. Just thinking aloud.

    Do you people ever work together for the amputee's sake? Or for the money? Do you look at other inventions in this area? If so, do you know of the foot/ankle a poor southeast Asian developed that makes it easy to walk normally? Lost feet and legs from mines. Mostly American mines and bombs, etc.
