  • Albert Chi, MD explains the crossroads of breakthrough surgery and breakthrough technology revealing the future of prosthetics that will change the world - the Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL), delivering hope and possibility to all who have lost an upper extremity.
    With special thanks to core the TEDxPortland organizing team, 70+ volunteers and cherished partners - without you this experience would not be possible. Our event history can be found TEDxPortland.com
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
    Albert is a trauma surgeon with a background in biomedical engineering. His clinical research is focused on improving the lives of individuals with traumatic injuries with an emphasis on motor control. Helping develop the world's most sophisticated prosthetic arm, Albert seeks to revolutionize the way individuals with lost limbs conduct their everyday lives. He is also commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserve. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The arm seems to be able to be controlled remotely. I wonder if he has ever had a moment where something is just out of reach, he just pulls off his arm and uses it to grab it.

I have a family member in Houston who has been told there are not hip or shoulder joint replacements to attach to the external prosthetic for increased range of motion! He is a a triple amputee at the age of 24 years and would be so motivated to be a part of research at this level. He actually got out of TIRR 3 months early of the expected discharge date due to some amazing doctors, OT and PT staff. He is able to mow three acres on a zero turn lawn mower. If you want someone who has the motivation to help with your research please try and contact us. He is READY!

    I had high hopes for this video. I see this type of prosthetic at every 'advanced' prosthetic video and all things lack the most important element that makes it really useful. The Speed! You see, every bionic limb out there can extend, rotate, emulate the human movements perfectly etc. But everything is slow. Maybe one day, we will get there.

    • @TheAxmore
      @TheAxmore 5 лет назад +3

      There was one person who had sensory feedback capabilities with this arm. They basically moved the nerves that control feeling in the fingertips to her bicep and put vibrating pads on those spots. So when the hand touched something it would vibrate those spots and the patient would feel it like it was on her fingers

      It's still attached to bones, muscle, nerves, tissue. Unlike a fully autonomous android which has nothing but it's own hardware to stop it this would probably still hurt the user if they were to use it to do much damage. Now, if they come out with an exoskeleton that can move as well as this arm does then it's nothing but how much weight can the systems hold and how well can it be armored. Unless they decide to put a gun in the arm like the movie "Upgrade".

    This is a great advancement, this is letting us change the path of human history, but I have to ponder the question of when will we become more machine than man, as this is just the tip of the iceberg, we’ll probably see artificial brains and bodies in a 100 years time, and complete body transfers maybe, but at the very least cybernetic eyes and muscles and the limbs of course, we may also see cybernetic neuron enhancements that speed up the reaction time and increase how much we can sense and our muscles strength.
