    I wish I saw your video before I put a gallon of muriatic acid into my 40,000g pool. My ph went from around 8 to about 6. Dummy I am. Finally dumped in enough borax to fix that problem. Never rush again.
    Great video

      I'm glad it's helpful. But as I said in this video, sometimes you need to raise one and w/out raising the other or some variation of that idea. I did several videos on raising one w/out raising the other and visa versa and the opposite (lowering one w/out lowering the other etc). Hope you'll watch those as well.
      Perhaps I should create playlists based on subject matter to help people find them easier. What do you think?

    Thanks for the great video it was done very well. I noticed you use all major steps taught top instructors such as your brief repeat of all the important items and steps.
    I was always told the amount of acid to add for high ph depends on the total gallons of your pool. For my pool of 12,000 gal I'm always instructed to add no more than 16 oz and to dilute the muriatic acid in pool water together in a bucket before adding it to the pool water.

    • @PoolSchooler

      Typically it should still be safe, BUT if someone is very sensitive to chemicals (some people react very badly to even low amounts of chlorine to the pool etc, you may want to run the equipment for an hour or two after before swimming.

    You are almost correct. Sodium Bicarbonate is best to increase Alkalinity with only a minimal increase in pH. Sodium Carbonate significantly Raises pH with only a small increase in Alakinity. Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) will significantly raise pH with NO Changes in Alkalinity or Calcium carbonate - but add only in small diluted amounts to avoid pH shock (Milky Water) for a few days. Have been running pools for over 30 years.

    Question,
    Is it ok to put the chlorine tablet in the skimmer basket rather than a free floating chlorine disperser?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  5 лет назад +1

      You can occasionally but I'd not do it regularly. The table(s) will erode much more quickly when the pump is running and because the tablets are in direct contact with the plastic skimmer basked, it'll wear out your basket much quicker. I'd suggest the floater for your regular chlorine tablet use.

    • @boardrfolif3
      @boardrfolif3 4 года назад

      Chiming in - you'll also have a higher level of chlorine than you'd want in the plumbing after the skimmer, causing quicker deterioration of path between skimmer and return. Aka your pump and filter will be taking a beating. Worth the $30 investment of a floater, they don't look so bad you hardly notice it after a while

  • @jackelectricman
    @jackelectricman 3 года назад +8

    Two things....
    You should mention that when adding a quart to 2 quarts of acid, you should correlate that to how many gallons of water is the pool
    Also, muriatic acid is available in various concentrations. I have seen it from as low as 19% to as high as 63%! So the concentration will definitely affect how much acid you need to add.
    Thanks

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Год назад +1

      There often are slight variations in the readings you get from different test kits and/or strips so as long as they are not dramatically different you should be fine. Remember you're keeping those levels in the ideal "RANGE" so you have some wiggle room.

    Very nice info, thanks. I don't understand the cost effectiveness of soda ash, today I found bags of 15 lbs of bicarb of soda (= sodium bicarbonate/baking soda) for $9. That stuff is cheap. Am I right that it does not disappear once your total alkalinity is good? Does it break down in any way, other than by adding muriatic acid? BTW, acid + baking soda turns into table salt. You're literally converting baking soda into salt so only do that as necessary.

      Soda ash is more for raising the pH of your pool and not so much the Alkalinity, whereas Bicarb is for raising the alkalinity w/out raising the pH. Hope that helps. So if you're wanting to raise the pH then use soda ash but to raise the alkalinity use bicarb. Also the cloudiness caused initially by both should dissipate w/in a couple hours after adding (make sure the pump is running to help).

    Question: This year. went from 20 year plaster to Pebble Sheen. For some reason, I have yet to put in Muratic Acid. Seems with the new Pebble Sheen, the PH & Alkalinity is always low. I don't pee in my pool, yes is Arizona it rains. The only thing I can think of is it's my suntan lotion that is causing my PH & Alkalinity to always be low. So, it seems like I'm always putting in baking soda in order to maintain the right balance of PH & Alkalinity. Love your videos by the way. Myself and all of us learn so much from them. Is this normal? Thank you!

      @PoolSchooler  Год назад

      It could very well be the chemicals used in the pebble sheen. I remember a 3m plaster that used something in their plaster that caused the pools ph and alkalinity to always be low. So it may be something similar. It may improve over time.

    Thanks for the videos. I accidentally diluted my pool (and surely my walletwhen the water bill comes). Always trying to wrap my head around PH and Alkalinity; my question is the effects of volume. what happens when, say, too much acid is added, then and equivalent excessive amount of soda ash is added to balance it? Then, say you add baking soda to adjust total alkalinity? What are the effects of higher volumes of acid and alkaline components in a pool?
    Mine is a salt pool, 1.5 Yrs old, did have my PH TA AND CL pretty perfect and stable with never very many chemicals needed or added. Now I’m kind of looking forward to the lessons of damage control and what it will take to get back to that stability. I will have to add salt (1700ppm) , and raise chlorine a lot (doesn’t register) lower TA a lot,(>200) lower PH very little (7.6-8)

      William Symons I’m a firm believer in gradually adjusting pool chemistry except in the case of a seriously green (and I mean swamp like) pool. It sounds like you just added too much acid or soda ash in these cases. Usually the chemicals will dissipate through use and evaporation so I’d be careful to not fall into the slippery slope of trying to bounce between the two extremes. Personally, and this is just my opinion, I would suggest backing off using the pool for about a week and just let your pool filter run its regular program and check your chemistry in a week. Then you’ll have a better gauge of what you’re dealing with. In an extreme case you can always drain the pool and refill it and start from scratch. But again, be very very very careful to add your chemicals slowly and gradually so you don’t have the same issue you are currently facing.
      With regards to your salt system and your chlorine levels, make sure you are cleaning your salt cell regularly, about once every 4 to 6 weeks. And follow the salt cell manufacturers guidelines for the salinity of your pool. Most of them function best with between 2700 to 3200 ppm. But again, you want to check the specs of your particular system.
      Again, my suggestion is don’t try to overcompensate or keep bouncing back-and-forth. Add your chemicals slowly and gradually and test your chemistry. Note, if you are testing your pool chemistry every day that is way overkill. It is going to fluctuate once a week is plenty. And when it comes to adding acid, I never suggest adding more than 2 quarts at a time. When it comes to adding soda ash, I never add more than 1 pound at a time. Take your time, be patient, and you’ll be fine.
      By the way, it’s my understanding that if you have excessive amounts of acid or excessive amounts of soda ash leading to extremely high or extremely low ph or alkalinity it creates an excessively corrosive environment which is not good for pool equipment or people.

    Hello there pool teacher, have you created a video on proper measurements when pouring chemicals into pools? For example pouring 1/4 of muratic acid into a measuring cup? Or explaining on how to properly measure 3oz. of algaecide into a “Home Depot
    Bucket”. Explain what ratios mean and how they look like (for visual people like myself). Does measurements have to be “on point”?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  16 дней назад

      It's been my experience that with some things you don't have to be "super" on point with. Muriatic Acid I usually add by the quart so w/my 1 gallon jugs of it I use about 1/4 of it. The only thing I'm really sticky on is the PH 10000 Phosphate remover (it's pricey and I don't want to waste it). Also I have a 1 and 2 lb scoop that I use for those chems that need to be measured that way.
      Algaecides I don't use this video will explain: ruclips.net/video/MzGoK4Cd7tc/видео.htmlfeature=shared
      Hope that helps.

      For a salt water tester. I'm doing a product review of a tester that should be out in a month or so. The one I've been using is a bit confusing so I wanted to find one that was as accurate but easier to use. Stay tuned.

    My first time using chemicals in a above ground pool. I figured what the hell, usually I'd just screen out grass and junk and change the water once every 7 to 10 day's, even tho I'm not using the pool everyday. It's definitely a learning experience for sure.

    My water was great for about 3 weeks. Thought for sure my problem had been solved...then we had a huge amt of rain and my water has been green ever since. My chlorine is fine, but I continually have a high ph and a low alkalinity. I add baking soda to bring A up and then I have to add acid to bring ph down. I seem to be the only one that constantly has this issue. I only add small amts of acid around the edge of pool.

    we have a intex pop up pool. it hold 1018 gal of water. we need to add acid, so i watched this video. I will get the liquid do I just do a cup at a time given the pool is not inground or super large? Also, I got a chlorine floater and did the math on the amount of tablets. They have been in the floater for 24 hours and the tester says add chlorine. How long before the chlorine will register? A friend from work said to put the cholorine in my filter vs a floater. does this make a difference.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  11 месяцев назад +1

      I've done one several videos on adding chemicals, depending on the issue (ie: low pH etc). I'll try to do one that covers the main chemicals: BUT generally: for liquid acid one to two quarts at a time. For soda ash or bicarb one to two pounds at a time. To be honest when it comes to things like liquid chlorine it depends on the size of the pool and how low or high the level of that particular measure you have. If you have a specific one (ie: ph or alkalinity) I can assist you better.

    I just added new water and followed your directions but this morning the ph is still high and alkaline good so add ph minus. can a product go bad it always has been raining all day in St George in June. aaahhh How long to see results, overnight so should I use muriatic acid if tomorrow not where it needs to be?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Год назад

      NOTE: Rain water has it's on ph and alkalinity so if you have a lot of rain that can change your pool chemistry. Pool chemicals can go bad or lose their efficacy for several reasons including time, and exposure to extreme heat or evaporation or some combination of them.
      ALSO, I wouldn't stress a ton over getting the pH and alkalinity perfect. Honestly, like I said before, the rain can bring it's own ph and alkalinity and affect your pool's so the big thing for your start up is getting the CYA right (remember keep it at the low end of ideal - 30ppm is plenty) and get the chlorine up. Then just do the best you can with the pH and alkalinity on a weekly basis and enjoy your pool.
