Rob can play as he likes, fingers, pick or toes?! ... He is an amazing bass player and I really hope to hear something special and cool bass parts on their new album 72 seasons !
I'd like to see toes, would be impressive.
@@SuicidalGrind 🤨📸
Lol suicidal tendencies was better with thundercat. Rob ain’t worth a fuck
Honestly, I play bass with a pick but I still say that pick vs. fingers is just whatever works best for the song overall
Exactly. I wish I could play equally well with fingers. I'm damn sure trying.
I prefer the attack of a pick. It's heavier, in my opinion.
@@MKDumas1981 F yeah, it can be if you're beating the crap outta it lol. Yet, I can say the same for fingerstyle. There are some absolutely beast finger players who cut right on through. The pick helps with a more consistent attack and super works for heavy music.
def depends on the music youre playing
Robert Trujillo adapted all the used techniques to make the bass sound just as it is recorded and how it is originally supposed to sound. Some songs of Jason indeed sound bigger, better and more powerfull when played with fingers. Playing bass with a pick gives a different kind of attack to the sound than the finger technique. Just like slapping is a different technique and sound (attack) from regular fingertechnique or the pick attack. I think Robert saw that video of Jason explaining that and decided to try to do more stuff with the pick to keep himself sharp, challenged and entertained. And I must say, it keeps the bass sound fresh and crispy. 👍
Another thing that comes with playing with fingers, to my experience, is a certain... I don't know, "messiness". Or then I just can't do fingerstyle properly. :D But actually, that cetain "messy" quality was present in that King Nothing clip.
I kinda like that. It doesn't mean I don't try to play as good as I can, but it gives it a nice ugly touch.
He’s almost 60, your fingers and wrists hurt after 20 years of playing that fast with your hand and the pick does sound more aggro.
Maybe he just feels like using a pick sometimes
Yeah we fans often overthink.
Only on that one song?
yeah lmao
1:32 to be honest that riff is actually much more comfortable with fingers.
Agreed
Not for me.
@@ferox965 skill issue
It doesn't sound the same tho cause when you finger a string on the bass the string below gets muted but that's not the case when playing with a pick
just anchor your thumb on the E string or pickup@@coltallica48
I play with a pick and fingers because i love all metallica bassists, and it's fun.
The God That Failed just needs that percussive attack that comes easier with a pick. You can do it finger-style but you have to purposely be more percussive as opposed to naturally being more percussive, so I think it's just a matter of it being equal parts easier to achieve the desired sound and because well...he felt like it. Perhaps just a nod to Jason in a sense as well.
I think Lars tried to play with a pick but didn't succeed so he gave it to Rob...and it worked well ! 😁
A pick used on a bass is the most metal sounding thing on the planet.
Rob is so underrated, of course i would rather have Jason due to his energy and voice, and id also have clic because he’s clif, but hes really damn good too
I know Robert can dig it, _but can Facebook?_
Haha
"Dig it, Facebook"
god this made me laugh so mxuh
It depends what you’re playing.I like bass played with fingers but I also really like bass played with a pick. Blackened especially sounds good with a pick.
loving your vides lately theyve been getting better! Keep up the metallica content!!
Rob also plays intro to All Nightmare Long with a pick live too, for obvious reasons I'd say
It still blows my mind rob played dyers eve with his fingers
He just picked it.
He did use a pick on Hardwired for one of the really fast bass parts, I get the snappiness of the pick is useful in certain places and fingers in others. I did see that vid where he played GtFailed w/ pick and I thought about it, but not as much as you AV!! Loveya keep up the great work! Слава Україні!
love your explanation brother
It’s fun to use all the techniques available! Pick, fingers, slap, tap, whatever.
Fun fact. The king nothing bass line wasn't written by jason. It was written by james. The classic albums episode of the black album.
If anything, rob may want to switch things up and see if it works better on his part. Or he could be going to pick cause he may be having a hard time keeping up with the faster tempo of live concerts. Whatever the reason, it's hard for me to notice a difference in pick VS finger when it comes to bass, where as in guitar, it's a bit easier to notice the pick VS finger play style.
all nightmare long was recorded with a pick, and he played "Death Is Not The End" with a pick sometimes
I think there is a big difference in sound between a pick and fingers
he been doing this for a while every now and then, i remember a few years ago they played until it sleeps and he used a pick
I personally have played with fingers then switch to pick and then back to fingers, I've noticed that when I'm playing with fingers my left hand feels more confortable to fool around and play more complex phrases, playing with a pick was pretty cool tho, the right hand warm up was much faster and the rythm was much tighter with a pick it was actually kind of random that I ended up playing fingerstyle again
Seems like a slight homage to Jason, Rob is the GOAT
Finger picking can give you more tone out of the strings. Look at Steve Harris, it's not all down to the equipment with bass. Try getting Steve Harris sound with a pick. At the end of the day it's just personal preference as you can get more of a scratchy sound with a pick
Hey I’m a bass player and I prefer using my fingers but sometimes I use a pick just to change things up a bit it’s all down to preference but a good all rounded bass player can do both
You gotta go back to his Suicidal Tendencies/ Infectious Grooves days. There was a lot of masterful finger work.
Some songs are meant for pick and vice versa. Is it because I attach them with Jason or Cliff/Rob? Not sure. Creeping always on finger for me, Frayed Ends always on pick.
Some of my favourite bass players play fingerstyle - Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Steve Di Giorgio. So I prefer Rob to play with the fingers. But if he feels playing The God That Failed makes it sound more like the record in a live setting then so be it. Lemmy and Phil Lynott were iconic front man bassists that used to play with a pick. Lemmy making picks on bass in metal ok saved Jason's fingers.
Well, I kinda like that Rob does fingerstyle. I mean, that inspired myself to learn how to play bass with fingers. BUT... I if I remember correctly, with Ozzy he used a pick exclusively. In Metallica's case he said he could play with a pick, too, but James was like "Yeah, but you know... Cliff..."
(And for the record, even that feels like a jab at Jason.)
The god that fails at least has very distinctive Spanky pick sound that you cant get with fingers
Rob played with a pick quite a few times in Black Label Society as well
The pick does sound different tho... gives you a sharper tone that cuts through the mix.
Picks vs Fingers don’t really matter man. It’s whatever the song calls for. I play most Tool songs with a pick. I play most Metallica songs with my fingers. It’s good to know both techniques, but it feels stupid hearing people complain about it. Just seems like an insecurity people love to squabble over.
Exatcly
I hope he uses slapping in 72 seasons
To date, Jason has played more slap bass on an album than Rob has. 😂
like you said personal preference i can use both fingers and pic the god that failed just sounds better with a pic!
Food for thought 🤔
personally, when i play bass, i keep a pick wedged between my bass' body and one of my bridge pickups, so that i can quickly go back and forth when needed
Oh no
It also depends on the player
1:28 I see Baby Yoda!
/>🎸
I caught a pick he was playing with at acl '19 actually hit my hand went over rail end up flipping over rail trying to grab it , 🎉security was guiding me abd out he reached out and dapped my hand a day i will never forget
Justice....to the bass lines...hehehe
I think he should play every Jason parts with a pick and every Cliff parts with fingers
I think much like Jason played in the shadow of cliff Even though Jason was equally as talented and then some. Rob is playing in the shadow of Jason. As great of a player Rob is he can never fill Jason's shoes. Ever.
I personally think for me a pick is better but to each his own.
If Rob,do that,'cause he wan't to give a honor to Jason...that fact,tell us only one thing...Rob is a great man !
I think he just did it to master the Jason style
if rob's about to be replaced, they better picked a guy thats slapping the bass💀
Using a pick also creates a memory for whoever gets it when he throws it in the crowd.
PICK, FINGERS ..WHO FUCKING CARES !!! PLAYING RIGHT IS WHAT COUNTS !!!!
He does whatever he wants
I think he should tape drumsticks to his fingers like Tony L.
for this riff like God That Failed, the Attack is different with PIck, that's all. King Nothing: Robert sound more Pick than Jason, I think the preset behind Robert has got much more HIGH EQ and maybe more Distorsition
He plays pick for songs Jason wrote basselines for I think
Rob played My Friend Misery with fingers.
I mean, after years of not letting him slap, of course he'd swap to pick
Genetically modified crops, the opioid crisis, turning Barbie into a film.....and now the Infectious Grooves bassist playing with a pick. It's enough to make you feel like there's just nothing left to live for. Oh well, at least we still have Henry Cavill as Superman.
Jason can play bass with his fingers
pick is best for metal
he uses a pick at the start of whiplash
Maybe he plays with pic every now and then because his hands and forearms are probably super stressed and he needs a break
According to Davie504, using a picc is no longer illegal. As long as you play bASS, a picc = EPIC.
Also, there's that Black Label Society live DVD where Robert plays every song with a pick. Just saying, it's out there and it's fucking weird.
Yes, I understand; pick or fingers? When you are practicing musician more is better!
Lars: Turn down the fokin bass!!!
I know I’m watching this video 4 months later but…. I picked up a bass because of Jason and I did not accept Rob when he joined. After 20 frickin years he finally won me over with the new album.
Maybe he honor the former bassist who wrote the lines (jason).
only bass player care about finger picking or picks... it's so funny to hear them argue
Thanos: impossible
It's a fruitless debate. For some style of play i prefer picks and for some, fingers. So I think this debate holds no water. If stever harris had played tropper with picks then everyone would have been questioning the one who dared to play it with fingers. Sometimes your opinion just doesn't matter.
eh, he's probably mixing it up for fun.
Well, you know ... except for a few trademark songs, bass sound in Metallica never played a big role historically, so ... 😇
On a serious note: I guess it's just preference, knowing that it doesn't really matter ... there are some videos where he does some crazy flamenco s**t on acoustic, so I guess he could play much more with a pick if he just wanted t.
I thought it was because Rob was getting old with arthritis
I don’t think he is switching as much as doing this track as it was written…
Maybe if he played with pick we could finally hear bass in Metallica lol
He’s been picking some songs. He’s mainly still a finger player. Mostly black album or justice songs
Sometimes Rob plays with a pick, even before Metallica... I thought this was very weird, but here he is playing Berserkers with a pick, but, like you said... why not?
ruclips.net/video/qcWNrudIS5A/видео.html
If you watch making of Death Magnetic and Hardwire, he used the pick to give the songs a pick sound. You can hear it! Grow up.
Okay, so?
Maybe he was just trying to sound as authentic as he can when playing that song?
It just proves Metallica is amazing and that they can achieve the impossible
Why is this even a video or talking point...
Whoever is crying about Rob playing with fingers needs to get back to reality... Cliff was playing with fingers!!!
I disagree, Rob can play with a pick, just as well as Jason can. I personally just think that Rob is a much more talented bass player all around.. Not saying that Jason isn't any good. Just that Rob has a good little bit on Jason.
What da... Maybe he just getting older an finger picking not cutting it no More... An besides that's what you use... Just saying
When it comes to Metal, I like the sound of a pick on bass. I actually think it looks cooler too.
Who cares it really doesn’t matter
who cares even legendary bassist like steve harris also sometime using pick
Man Your accent is so uncomfortable 😂
Maybe he gets more of a thicker sound with a pick on that song.
not everyone has big strong fingers. Pick can sound very good too though.
