The viola has a warmer sound, whereas the violin sounds colder? If that makes sense. lol I guess I have a bias towards violas and wish I would have learned to play the viola when I was still in high school. This was a really interesting video and taught me a lot! I had a friend in high school who played the viola and it was thanks to that that I had grown an appreciation for the instrument. It doesn't get a lot of appreciation or recognition, even today and it's a shame.
i also noted that for average-size musicians the arm holding the violin is less than a right angle in it's span, whereas with the viola is wider than a right angle.
Very informative video. However, I was wondering whether one aspect about playing the viola wouldn't be easier than that of the violin--the notes are a bit farther apart, making it easier to hit the right pitch, that is, allowing a little more room "for error". (I'm a bass player which makes me aware of this!)
I believe the violin is a Nicholas Zubak and the viola is a professional-level Kennedy Viola. My wife played professionally on it for years. 👍. kennedyviolins.com/products/nikola-zubak-violin-outfit
That's funny. I'm actually not neary as familiar with the guitar world but it is true that violists do not get the melodic line very often just like bass guitarists, so there is definitely a similarity there. Except, our hair is often quite shorter... 🙃
Actually, the guitar is more like a cello in terms of range and scale length, and the bass guitar is more like the double bass (they even share the same strings). I don't think there's an equivalent to the viola and the violin in the guitar world (unless you count the ukulele as a kind of guitar, and ukuleles do indeed come in different sizes).
@@KennedyViolins Actually, after some thinking, I think I figured out what is the equivalent in the electric guitar world - it's the pickups that determine the tone - humbucking pickups have a fatter tone, with more mids and lows, and less treble, kind of similar to the viola, while single coil pickups have a thinner, brighter sound, like the violin. Even though electric guitars are usually roughly the same size, the larger humbucking pickups pickup a larger vibrating area of the string, which makes a huge difference in the sound. You can search humbuckers vs single coil comparisons on RUclips if you're curious :)

Thank you for explanation! Great video! I’ve got a question. Is it possible to change strings from viola to violin 🎻? ( actually just one string) Since I just love the lower sound of viola much more than violin, but as you said that viola is finically bigger, it’s going to be harder to play it... Thank you!
It's definitely possible and a lot of people do this especially for smaller instruments that are meant for children. However, the C string is a particular issue because the C string really needs a larger body to sound good. So, it'll mechanically work just fine, but the lower register in the instrument will sound muffled. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Kennedy Violins Thank you very much for reply. Then comes another question. I use 4/4 of violin, it’s my perfect size , I found out that there are smaller violas. For 4/4 violin is equal 14 inches of viola , right? (Maybe am wrong ) so, the small size of viola n violin with C string will sound the same with no good sound, just wonder if it will make any sense to change string in violin if it sounds the same? Or just to get a small size of viola, bcos for me , I won’t be able to play bigger viola.. am trying to figure it out the best option. I hope my question was clear 🙂( maybe not that much) Thank you!
@@Nataliia0326 I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly, but you can buy violas that are the size of violins. However, they will be thicker so even though the length may be the same as a violin like 13 in equals 3/4 size violin and 14 in equals a full-size violin the thickness of the instrument will actually be slightly more. This will help a little bit, but really, the best thing to do is get a minimum of a 15 inch viola and then that will make the C string sound much better if you can play that size. there are some places that will sell you a 13 or 14 inch Viola but they are not really violas. They will just be violins with Viola strings. So, you want to make sure that if you get a 13 or 14in instrument, that it is a little thicker, so it's actually a viola. It will make a small difference and sound a little better. 👍

She will be in the 4th grade, has long fingers but is rather slim with not super strong arms. Guessing from the size, I think a violin would be a better option for her. Do you think she could handle it? Of course, the choice will be hers, I'm simply wondering if a viola wouldn't be too heavy or too difficult to handle for her... I'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

Thanks for the nice comments and I'm glad you find it helpful :) Switching to viola from the violin is one of the easiest transitions that you can make because the strings are mostly the same but you do have to read a different clef. However, learning the new clef is pretty easy because the notes read very similarly. However, switching from violin to cello would be much more difficult because everything is reversed since the cello is on the floor and basically your bow are gets reversed. Hope this helps. That's exactly what i was looking for very informative comment thanks, and if i have an idea i can suggest it:), also can violin being played in certain way to give deeper sound like viola?
I am relatively new to the violin and I am currently taking online lessons due to the pandemic. I am interested in learning the viola as well. Is there a recommended timeframe for beginning to learn the viola as well if I am new to the violin? I don’t want to mess myself up, but I have also heard that they are very complimentary to each other.
Hi Mary, congratulations on your decision to learn viola. If you stick to it, I think you'll find it quite rewarding! There are many ways to answer your question. Assuming that you are learning to read treble clef as you learn violin and are NOT learning by ear, then the biggest benchmark you'll want to achieve before learning the viola, would be to make sure that you can confidently read music on the violin first. Obviously being "good" at reading music is relative, so I'd say that you'll want to make sure that you can easily read any notes on the clef up to 4th finger on the E string. Some may say 3rd position reading is necessary as well but it depends on who you ask. Reading alto clef is actually VERY similar to reading treble clef, so it can easily confuse a beginning learner, so that is why I think it's the first skill you'll want to have under your belt. The other challenge you'll discover is that viola necks are bigger and harder to get your hand around. At first, this can cause a lot of violinists wrist pain, so you'll want to pay particular attention to warming up properly AND "preparing your wrist/elbow" before placing your hand on the neck of the instrument. Ultimately, the more flexible you are, the easier time you'll have. I hope this helps!
I play cello and baritone horn. The inevitable question about the latter is answered: a small tuba with approximately the same range as the trombone". A viola can be described as "like a violin, but somewhat bigger and lower".
beautiful. if you play only on the top three strings, does it sound just like a violin, or is there a significant timbral difference? also is viola quieter than violin ?
The violin will generally project more than a viola, even if you play the same strings. It has to do with the size of the violin in proportion to the thickness of strings etc.
I used to play the viola but I switched to violin because my hands were small and it was more comfortable for me to play. But now I’ve grown a bit and I’m taking up viola again.
I'd reckon you could write vrtuosic music for the viola, I think part of the problem is that since the violin has a greater repertoire, more people are drawn to it, many composers play it and as a result more music gets written, compounding the issue, add to that most musicians read the treble clef very well and have at least a reasonable grasp of the bass clef but shy away from the alto clef, probably not wanting to learn to read and write a new clef fluently, it's a shame, I love my violin but the viola has a lovely warm sound the violin doesn't quite manage, my brothers main instrument is the viola (he also plays cello, probably could beat me on a violin too, in spite of never having played one as he just has such an innate understanding of theory and has already learned so many other instruments at this point it's unreal, so I couldn't see the switch from viola being difficult) I don't understand all the jokes, OK the odd joke without malice, about anything, is fine but why so many jokes, I'd consider my brother very talented musically, heck when I had been struggling with guitar for over a year, he taught himself in less than a month and showed me up! Sure there are plenty of very talented violists, just make music because you love it and your instrument and enjoy it!
No,the viola has always been a little larger and deeper,in fact just over half an octave lower than the violin and straddles both alto and tenor ranges.
TIL... There are clefs other than Treble and Bass ;P I've literally never heard of Alto Clef. So, that makes Treble like soprano? Are there Tenor and Baritone Clefs as well?
You can use a violin bow on a viola or vise versa but only for easier type of music generally speaking. Violin bows are lighter, so when used on a viola, you have to work much harder (especially on the lower strings) to get the sound out. Viola bows are heavier, so they tend to not bounce nearly as well on the lighter gauge violin strings and can dull the sound especially on the upper violin strings. For simple songs at a beginner level, it probably doesn't make much difference but the more advanced player/piece, the more and more difference it'll make. Hope that helps!
He said on 3:54 that the highest pitched string on the viola is A but the picture of the viola is showing that the highest pitched string on the viola is C... but great video! :D
Beautiful music! And very accomplished player! Unfortunately, the sound is too soft, his voice sounds like a whisper, but music came across well...rich and resonate.
Gee, thanks! I never expected a reply; I was researching differences between viola and violin, as my daughter took up the viola when she was young. You play magnificently! Beautiful, rich tones, such sweet music! I wish she had stayed with it, but her teacher retired and she took up the clarinet.
Yes, pretty much. The instruments are a little bit different once you get to more advanced levels but the most difficult thing is just reading the music because they read different clefs.
So I have ran across something odd.its not a viola,it's smaller but bigger then full size violin.its still considered violin but 1/4 inch longer so it has deeper tone.
Yes, it's very easy to switch back and forth. A person has to get accustomed to the size difference and you read the music differently, but you basically play them the same. 👍
Kennedy Violins Wow! Thanks for the response. 😊 I didn't know that. I'm torn between learning how to play the violin or the viola. So it's good to know that it's possible to switch back and forth with those two.
@@angeladominique5846 Well, it's always easier to learn on a smaller instrument. So, you could start out on the violin and then switch later once you have the fundamentals down. This is a common strategy I think. 🙂

Yes, the joke's take a long time to go away! There are certain RUclipsrs that keep up the viola bashing on their channel, so it definitely doesn't help. There are a lot of impressionable young people out there who don't understand that it's really just a joke and they don't understand where the jokes are coming from and so the viola is getting the brunt of it! 🤔☹️

Yes, large hands will definitely make it easier for you to learn viola. Of course, learning any bowed stringed instrument is extremely difficult but you'll have an advantage for sure; even if it may not feel like it. In the same way, having really large hands can make learning the violin more difficult. Hope this helps!

I play cello and baritone horn. The inevitable question about the latter is answered: a small tuba with approximately the same range as the trombone". A viola can be described as "like a violin, but somewhat bigger and lower".
Correct me if I'm wrong, so if I'm composing a track, I would use violins to play the melody and the violas to maybe support the melody?
Which string instrument is good for a beginner who like a wide range of sound, violin, viola, or a cello?
beautiful. if you play only on the top three strings, does it sound just like a violin, or is there a significant timbral difference? also is viola quieter than violin ?
The violin will generally project more than a viola, even if you play the same strings. It has to do with the size of the violin in proportion to the thickness of strings etc.
Your intro is so satisfying
Please wear a mic when recording your videos. Content was very informative.
Yes, old video. Bad sound. I should probably redo this video. Thanks for watching!. 😉
I used to play the viola but I switched to violin because my hands were small and it was more comfortable for me to play. But now I’ve grown a bit and I’m taking up viola again.
Thank you this was very informative! ;) Now we know x
Glad to help. Thanks for the comment! 😉
You play so nice I love instruments. So lovely
This was a very helpful and informative video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment!
Excellent description of physical and sound difference of the two instruments!
One problem is that I minored in music, and no class I ever took taught me the alto clef.
Huh, I always thought of viola simply as a higher pitched violin, so it surprised me to see that it was larger and deeper!
Thanks for watching. 🙂
Same!
No,the viola has always been a little larger and deeper,in fact just over half an octave lower than the violin and straddles both alto and tenor ranges.
Thank you! Awesome video!
whos where afer watching two set violin?
Could you discuss the times that you would want to play a 5 string violin?
Most people that want a 5 string are people in bands, who don't want to carry around 2 instruments.
TIL... There are clefs other than Treble and Bass ;P I've literally never heard of Alto Clef. So, that makes Treble like soprano? Are there Tenor and Baritone Clefs as well?
yes there are! Tenor clef and baritone do exist and are used in choirs (and maybe other things)
I want to switch from viola to violin, is it possible to use the viola bow on a violin proberly?
Both instruments are exactly the same , Only Violinists have bigger heads !.,)
😜
bruh wtf I just typed up "dif" in the search bar and at the top search was
"difference between violins and violas"
wow
WOW. Google's algorithm must be working overtime!
@@KennedyViolins hahaha
Well That’s Because This Is An Ad.
thank u! and... you are so skillful! play that way two different instruments... welldone^^ plase make more videos^^
Thank you for the nice compliment 😊. I upload a new video every Monday 👍
I love ur intro idk y
Beautiful music! And very accomplished player! Unfortunately, the sound is too soft, his voice sounds like a whisper, but music came across well...rich and resonate.
Thank you for the lovely compliment and yes, the microphone sucks! My microphone is a little better these days. Happy practicing!
Gee, thanks! I never expected a reply; I was researching differences between viola and violin, as my daughter took up the viola when she was young. You play magnificently! Beautiful, rich tones, such sweet music! I wish she had stayed with it, but her teacher retired and she took up the clarinet.
@@caroldemaris7151 Well, that's ironic since some of the best music for the viola was originally written for clarinet! 😃
Really! How interesting! Thanks for that info! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your families at Kennedy Violins!
@@caroldemaris7151 👍
So, people who play the viola can play the violin and vice versa?
Yes, pretty much. The instruments are a little bit different once you get to more advanced levels but the most difficult thing is just reading the music because they read different clefs.
So I have ran across something odd.its not a viola,it's smaller but bigger then full size violin.its still considered violin but 1/4 inch longer so it has deeper tone.
Very interesting! I never really thought about the differences. You have taught me something.
Good job.
very helpful. thanks!
I used to think a viola was a baby violin. Then I heard twoset play one and...oh my god I love violas!
Is there a size in violas that is same as 4/4 violin?
Just out of curiosity. Does it mean that when you know how to play the viola, it is also easy to play the violin and vice versa?
Yes, it's very easy to switch back and forth. A person has to get accustomed to the size difference and you read the music differently, but you basically play them the same. 👍
Kennedy Violins Wow! Thanks for the response. 😊 I didn't know that. I'm torn between learning how to play the violin or the viola. So it's good to know that it's possible to switch back and forth with those two.
@@angeladominique5846 Well, it's always easier to learn on a smaller instrument. So, you could start out on the violin and then switch later once you have the fundamentals down. This is a common strategy I think. 🙂
Kennedy Violins Awesome! Thanks for the tips! You've been really helpful. More power (and subscribers) to your channel. 🙂
Clarinetist here 😂 But I’d love to learn viola eventually. I’m not sure why it receives so much hate, it’s an absolutely gorgeous instrument with such a rich and dark sound.
I play viola and I had to show her this so she knew the difference 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! Very well explained and not too much rambling as many YT videos like this tend to do!

I couldn't move on from the intro😂
Yeah, I don't blame you.
Hahaha😂😂😂
Can you tell me why 'general speaking' Violins are more expensive than Violas?
hi. i have big hands. would be easy for me to play viola than violin?. I ride a vespa bike so cello is out of que question!.
Yes, large hands will definitely make it easier for you to learn viola. Of course, learning any bowed stringed instrument is extremely difficult but you'll have an advantage for sure; even if it may not feel like it. In the same way, having really large hands can make learning the violin more difficult. Hope this helps!
gracias!
what viola model you use in the video?
This particular viola is one my dad made (Tom Kennedy). It's about 15 5/8th long. It's quite unique. My wife played it through most of college and then professionally for many years. 😉
I hope to have a viola and a cello sometime.
Well, you'll have to learn 1 of the instruments "backwards", so which one will it be?
are violas easier to learn than violin?
Violas are generally harder to play because they're usually bigger but Viola music is usually easier. That's the simple answer! Let me know if you have any other questions ☺️
Can you play a violin with a viola bow of visa versa?
BASS
I just wanna know what's the name of the Bach he plays at 5:50 I want it and have for the whole day on headphone as I do nothing

get a correct comparison here 'cause of TwoSet's one is... you know..
It's correct
The new violin family will upgrade the orchestra to a new level which means they'll add more parts to all the repertoire.
