A few months ago I was lucky enough to find the base MacBook M1 Pro 16 inch at Costco for $1500 BRAND NEW! A total steal for the kind of performance and quality I got out of this machine! And a nice change from my 2.5 year old M1 MacBook Air, albeit noticeably heavier to lug around.

You don’t even need the M1 Max. Get a refurbished M1 Pro 16 inch, base configuration. I bought one through a third party vender this summer on Amazon, arrived in a certified refurbished box straight from Apple - I don’t even think it had even been used before. It was essentially brand new and for only $1600! This thing is stupid powerful. I throw quite a bit at it and have yet to find anything that slows it down. Thanks so much for this video. I saw a great deal on an M1 Max Macbook Pro 16 three weeks ago (64gb RAM, 4TB SSD, three years of Apple Care), and I bought it. Then I started seeing stories about the M2 and M3 models, and I had some buyer's remorse. This video made me feel 100% better, so thanks, and keep up the great work.

I recently saw a deal on the 14-inch, 2TB version, otherwise identical to yours. After using a 13-inch M1 MBP for almost the last 3 years--and loving it--I began to run into reliability problems re: using a 1TB Samsung T7 external SSD as my do-everything hard drive solution (I bought the 256GB SSD M1 MBP to save money). The MBP would start unpredictably, improperly disconnecting from the T7 when I closed the lid or the screen darkened. I usually leave docs and photo libraries open if I'm working on them, and this new problem made it so my files were in jeopardy. On top of that, there have been plenty of times that I couldn't eject my SSD because of unspecified reasons (I'd close every app, but the drive still wouldn't eject). In order to pack up my MBP and take it somewhere, I needed to unplug the SSD, so this had the added inconvenience of adding more prep time before I could step out the door (and it usually happened when I was already running late).
With my new M1 Max, I've got all the storage I need, more power than I know what to do with (though I'll be starting a journey into video editing soon), and the absolute luxury of being able to close the lid on it and take it with me without having to eject anything. Oh, and the ports (especially the HDMI port and SD card port) are great to have, and will likely save me from having to bring a dongle most places.
It's been fun going back to see what people had to say about the M1 Max from 2 years ago up until 2 weeks ago. Even though I've only had it for a day so far, I've got no buyer's remorse, and I'm only liking it better by the hour. I think you'll love yours as well!
As for the 13-inch M1 MBP? It's amazing how much better that computer looks without a USB-C cable constantly connected to it!😂 My teenage daughter now has a great laptop that should last her a good while.

One note on these videos recommending to buy a bit older Macs to save money. Most of these videos are recorded in USA and use US Apple prices, and probably assume they are close to the same round the world. Wrong. Very wrong. In Europe for example, central Europe - there are almost none refurbished Apple computers to buy, for some reason. And if there are any, they cost about 5% less than the current version - not a great deal right? :) As for the 'never used', 'brand new' but older systems like M1 - again, same situation, price drop of around 5%, MAYBE 10%, compared to M3. So bear in mind the disclaimer that it's all most likely not relevant for Europe. There are no big discounts from Apple in central Europe. So, in Europe, you should actually avoid buying older Macs.

The last Macbook I felt stood the test of time and was extremely reliable was the 2015 Macbook pro, which I owned until the 2021 with the M1 Macbook pro 16 inch. This is just a beauty in all aspects and I only have the base model. Even the display brightness which I wish was brighter has Vivid, which enables that XDR brightness whenever you want. I used the 2015 for 5-6 years, so I imagine I will get that if not more with the M1 pro.

Currently I am using MacBook Pro 16 inch late 2019 on Intel i9 with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. So, I don’t have any issue with portability at all.
The indecisive comes from the M2 Pro vs M3 chip and RAM difference between those 2 machines (36GB RAM on M3 Pro vs 32GB RAM on M2 Pro)
Which one do you think has better value and better investment protection between brand new MacBook Pro M3 Pro 14 inch with 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Refurbished MacBook Pro M2 Pro 16 inch with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD? I am not video editor or digital content creator or any graphic intensive users here.

What he faiks to mention is that Aoole has a policy to STOP supporting models more than 6 years old. So no more OS updates, which means eventually new apps become incompatible.
So if a model was discontinued 2 years ago, that model has approx. 4 years of support left.
It does not matter if the hardware is still very capable. Apple want you to STOP using it after 6 years.

As an owner of BM PRO 16 M1 Max, I kinda feel offended by seeing "you should buy" video when it's just two years old :D :D :D Still going so strong. Still battery life is awesome. Still the beats almost anything I thow at it.. by "almost" i mean there are some hickups in Parallels in performace of AutoCad... But that's a problem between 64bit software on ARM CPU.

I decided to replace my all-time favorite laptop, the MacBook Air M1, and was considering the 14" M3 MBP until I saw this. Great points that make sense for my use-case of needing a little more power and just a bit more eye candy with the display. Thanks!

I currently have a 16" MacBook Pro that I bought new in 2022 and I absolutely love it! It does everything I need it to do and then some. I've thought about upgrading to the M3 Max, but honestly for the price point I don't think it's worth it.

If you have two macs with same outerbody but with different processors and ram, most people cant even tell the difference between two.
A point of saturation in the industry has come,or infact is about to come, when increasing the processor power and ram, will not affect the workflow.

Hello and I am hoping you can advise me. I have been following your videos for some time and I think they are some of the best regarding Apple products, and accessories to buy for it, in fact I even went out and bought a MacBook Pro, as you suggested. My question to you is: I presently have movies stored on a SanDisk, Extreme Pro 256GB SDXC card, and presently use it on my Windows11 computer to watch movies on the plane when I travel. Do I need to reformat it in order to be able to view the movies stored on this card on my "new" MacBook Pro?
    Thank you

I bought the MBP M1 16 when it was released in Nov 2021. It’s fast and efficient. It powers 3 displays (two external and its own display). I can watch video and perform intensive processing like image and video editing simultaneously. Its battery is awesome. The up front cost is high. But from a total cost of ownership perspective, it is well worth it.

Great video! Yes, I have an M1-PRO MBP 16 with 32GB RAM/1TB SSD and I love it. I agree 100% with everything you said. It's the best computer I've ever owned. I plan to use it until it dies, have Apple fix it (I have the forever monthly maintainance agreement) and keep using it. I bought it with the upgraded RAM and SSD so it would last me 7 to 10 years. I have a 15" mid 2015 MBP that's my backup machine and the one I use sitting in bed because the keyboard on the 2021 bothers my wife, but the 15"one doesn't. The 2015 isn''t going anyplace either.
