I thought the Tolkien joke was hilarious but never expected the subtitles change. It wasn't until much later during a rewatch of an earlier season that I thought I was losing my mind seeing "Tolkien" in the subtitles. Now I love seeing all the pieces in early episodes where you can still see his name as Token within the animation. It feels like Easter eggs 😂
first he is happy and amazed that he can play base but then he realized that Cartman's racist stereotyping is true but he has to keep cooperating so all he can do is say "god dammit" with mixed feelings it's pure genious.
I loved when the Psychiatrist acts extremely judgmental towards Stan and then turns around and starts talking to the audience. That really put me to tears.
What I find so funny about the whole Token thing is that when that episode aired, there were people seriously claiming that they always knew his name was Tolkien despite the fact that every T-shirt with said character clearly had his name spelled as 'Token' before that change was made.
I have definitely had that argument 😂 The problem is, Matt and Trey were smart enough to change it on a bunch of different things, so they think they have proof that it was always Tolkien. They really do believe it.

Season 16 episode 9 "Raising the Bar" 9 minutes in, Token presents a TV show trailer that he produced personally that opens with the logo for his production company: Token Black Productions. I remember when this show was new, and you're right that Cartman was not the fan favorite. Kenny was because the main hook of the show was that there was a character who dies in every episode. That was really what got this show off the ground. No Kenny, and this show would have been canceled immediately imo, because it looked really bad.
It didn't look bad at all, this was the age of shock jocks. There was no "looks bad = bad" this was "any publicity is good publicity" Having 8 year old swearing and confronting pop culture references was huge. It's why Slim Shady did so well. Em took what was happening and brought it into our homes via slaughtering pop culture references with no fear of blowback. South Park did for comedy central what Eminem did for Dr Dre. They brought it to our homes.

The funniest/most glorious part about the whole Tolkien thing is that i've seen people online who are legitimately pissed off and claiming that South Park has gone "woke" because of it... when that's exactly the reaction they wanted. I'm like you guys do realize that part of the whole reason why they did this was because they knew people like you (a lot of who most likely don't even watch the show) would get irrationally angry over it and that they would find it hilarious, not because they're trying to be "woke."

I went several years without having anything to do with South Park. Then I stumble into a few RUclips videos talking about the show, and wonder why everyone is mispronouncing Token's name. When the Token/Tolkien ep just came out. Some friends and i had a livestream were we talked a bit aboot Southpark, than someone mentioned the ep and the name change, the rest of us trolled that person by stating the character was always named Tolkien, the person was getting confused for a bit.

You left out the biggest troll was when they made Kenny Dies. An episode about the whole premise of Kenny dying despite him dying in basically every previous episode
It wasn't a troll because they really wanted to kill off Kenny permanently. They kept him dead for a year, and wanted him off the show. The season 5 commentary really explains their decision. They also thought about getting rid of Kyle at this time too. It wasn't a joke, they were actually tired of his character. It took them almost an entire season to realize they wanted Kenny to be back on the show.

Month before my 8th birthday.. I remember me and my dad getting lost in the woods bike riding/ trying to find the car.. Rushing home to finally find out who Cartmans father was. 😅 April 1st 1998.. 😩 I was so pissed.
I was that 5th grade kid that had the VCR timer set to record the new South Park episode rerun that came on after my parents were in bed😂. I would leave the satelite reciever on Comedy Central so the VCR would record the weeks new episode as well as other shows (cough HBO). Before I left for school in the morning i would hurry and watch the episode. All the kids talked about during lunch were the latest South Park episodes and I'll be damned if I was going to be unkewl because I didn't know anything abour the latest episode. I do remember the episode abour Cartmans Mom and I remember all my friends being pissed off that it took forever for them to finally do the reveal. I did have some friends that were unfortunate so i would make them a VHS copy to watch in the school library. There was a time when adults thought it was just a cartoon lmao

Up until that episode aired I didn't even know that wasn't just a normal name. How would I know that's not just a normal name. Also: how would I know that a black dude that is put in a show just for being black is a thing and called a token. Anyway, nice reveal, made me get two jokes at once. One of them just being there for over a decade unexplained in the back of my head.
You know what's messed up? When the character first appeared, I actually did think his name was Tolkein. Other real life humans had to explain the joke to me. Not the wider socio racial cultural implications of the joke, I was aware of the concept of tokenism. I just, for some reason, didn't hear it. I heard Tolkein. It is genuinely wild having that experience, and then 20 years later, the show comes out and says I was actually right the first time.
Honestly I love Towelie as a character specifically because of how terrible he is. He crossed the line twice for me where he was so not funny he became funny. The only other show I've known do that is Family Guy where a joke is funny, then goes on for so long that it's not funny anymore, but then keeps going until it starts to become funny that it's so not funny, usually ending with an absolute wet fart of an anticlimax.
The token thing messed my head up, I go through spells of watching it so after a break I noticed all the name changes and couldn’t figure out wtf was going on.

Tokenism comes from the word token, not the other way around. Token comes from an old germanic word teken meaning sign/symbol/evidence. A token was proof or symbolic of something. A token black character was proof the producers aren't racist, a token gesture is symbolic of the wider issue, even a subway/arcade token is proof you paid. Tokenise is a very recent word mostly refering to the abuse of the first example, to back derive token from that is weird.
Something you didn’t say is with toilken’s name change, if you watch any old episode everyone calls him “toilken” in the subtitles.. EXCEPT FOR RANDY AND STAN CAUSE THEY NEVER KNEW, they still say “token” !!!

I was that 5th grade kid that had the VCR timer set to record the new South Park episode rerun that came on after my parents were in bed😂. I would leave the satelite reciever on Comedy Central so the VCR would record the weeks new episode as well as other shows (cough HBO). Before I left for school in the morning i would hurry and watch the episode. All the kids talked about during lunch were the latest South Park episodes and I'll be damned if I was going to be unkewl because I didn't know anything abour the latest episode. I do remember the episode abour Cartmans Mom and I remember all my friends being pissed off that it took forever for them to finally do the reveal. I did have some friends that were unfortunate so i would make them a VHS copy to watch in the school library. There was a time when adults thought it was just a cartoon lmao
Before that episode, I would wonder why his name is Token. I figured maybe his parents thought of him as special and unique, like a token coin, but boy, was I wrong 😂

Up until that episode aired I didn't even know that wasn't just a normal name. How would I know that's not just a normal name. Also: how would I know that a black dude that is put in a show just for being black is a thing and called a token.
Anyway, nice reveal, made me get two jokes at once. One of them just being there for over a decade unexplained in the back of my head.

You know what's messed up? When the character first appeared, I actually did think his name was Tolkein. Other real life humans had to explain the joke to me. Not the wider socio racial cultural implications of the joke, I was aware of the concept of tokenism. I just, for some reason, didn't hear it. I heard Tolkein. It is genuinely wild having that experience, and then 20 years later, the show comes out and says I was actually right the first time.
"Thats it. Thats the tune to funky town."
Oh, they didn't just troll everyone, they GASLIGHTED everyone. "No, his name was ALWAYS Tolkien, you were just saying it wrong."

Honestly I love Towelie as a character specifically because of how terrible he is. He crossed the line twice for me where he was so not funny he became funny.
The only other show I've known do that is Family Guy where a joke is funny, then goes on for so long that it's not funny anymore, but then keeps going until it starts to become funny that it's so not funny, usually ending with an absolute wet fart of an anticlimax.

Tokenism comes from the word token, not the other way around.
Token comes from an old germanic word teken meaning sign/symbol/evidence. A token was proof or symbolic of something.
A token black character was proof the producers aren't racist, a token gesture is symbolic of the wider issue, even a subway/arcade token is proof you paid.
Tokenise is a very recent word mostly refering to the abuse of the first example, to back derive token from that is weird.
Something you didn’t say is with toilken’s name change, if you watch any old episode everyone calls him “toilken” in the subtitles.. EXCEPT FOR RANDY AND STAN CAUSE THEY NEVER KNEW, they still say “token” !!!
