Love this series forever and I never get tired of hearing the opening tune. And I've realised how Rhoda was quite a fashion plate. Her peasant looks, halter tops, knickerbockers & boots, cork wedges and ponchos were so at the height of mode at the time.
Ramon was just adorable. Great actor!! So was Ron Silver. Ditto on Kenneth McMillan. And Kevin Delano. This show was so weird and so uniquely funny. Campy and cheesy too, at this point. We love the 70’s. Rhoda had such a soft spot for sweet/nerdy/loser guys.
I smile whenever I see the outside of Rhoda/Brenda's building...I lived in that tall building right behind (you can see in some shots) for a year in NYC, and it's actually on the east side of Manhattan, not the "west 64th Street" address the characters give.
Rhoda was the Seinfeld of the seventies...This show was brilliant...This is one of the best casts in US tv sitcom history...Each character was so natural, in how they interacted and acted with one another...Also, they seemed to, genuinely, like each other, also...Rhoda, even today, can stand toe to toe with today's best sitcoms and, in some cases, even supercedes some of them...Carlton ("Hello this is Carlton, your doorman") was a hilarious part of the show and, just like with Howard's mom, from "The Big Bang Theory", who, the audience never sees, that kind of mystery makes the show that much more interesting...Rhoda's sister and mom, Brenda and Ida, have the perfect personalities to play off Rhoda's multipdimensional character...The icing on the cake of the show are Gary, Benny, Jack and, of course, Johnny Venture...I'm glad I started watching Rhoda, again, after watching it, during my youth, in the seventies...Of course, now, I can appreciate it that much more...I'm surprised Rhoda isn't on TV Land...It's a pity this legendary sitcom only lasted five years...God bless the amazing, beautiful and very likeable, Valerie Harper!
Rhoda was on TV land some years ago late night. At least I believe it was TV land. It was and always will be one of my favorite shows. I loved her better than Mary on the Mary Tyler Moore Show! I still love the way she dresses today and actually, I dress alot like she did then, now! Haha! RIP Valerie Harper.
Emily Edwards I agree on both counts. I found myself laughing out loud at Brenda's efforts to extricate herself from the sweater. Wonderful physical comedy.
And her entire matching couch and chair and her brown coffee cups. And plants. And that cool lamp attached to the wall. Her coffee table pieced was cool !
This has always been a favorite episode. Ken McMillan was a great actor...died way too young though. So did Rafael Campos. The last couple years of the show were in need of an interesting character that would bring some humor into things and Jack was definitely that.
They all look like they're dressed up to go to 4 different places haha. Brenda and Gary look great, though...and Johnny is dressed for a proper Opera! 14:19 Rhoda's fabulous Kimono
One of my favorite characters is the unseen Carlton (Lorenzo Music) which is difficult to say because they all are good. Casting director really knows his or her stuff when hiring staff.
@@jena9176 Check out his pilot cartoon called Carlton your Doorman. It is a adult cartoon much like modern Simpsons or Family Guy. The episode never made it to series but still funny nonetheless
"Rhoda" always gets a bad rap - people think the supporting characters sucked. I think it was in some ways better than MTMS! Today, I find it just as fresh and funny and original as it was then. I think because Valerie was just such a virtuoso actress. She had PERFECT comedic timing and was just a natural. She made it look so easy.
I randomly saw her at autograph conventions in L.A. several times during the last decade of her life. Now of course I hate myself for not speaking to her. I've always loved this show. I watched it during the late '90s on Nick at Night to keep myself awake when I studied for college exams.
@@AnnusMirabilus well, you know what they say... "Never meet your heroes." I'm sure she was nice though. Those autograph conventions are (and I'm quoting another actor here) "for out-of-work losers." I don't know why she'd lower herself to doing them and I hope she didn't go to many. She didn't need to make a living hawking signatures and she worked almost up until the time she died. Anyway... As I said many posts ago, "Rhoda" was always sort of underrated and today is all but forgotten except by fans of old TV who (maybe) realize how good it is.
They said "The Three Stooges" cured a guy of cancer because he laughed so hard..... I think this show would do the same job, it is freaking hilarious!!!!
I never noticed before, their names all end in "-da": Ida, Rhoda, Brenda. I wonder how many other sisters and aunts she might have: Linda, Bermuda, Lucinda, Ramada, ....? [edit] Rhonda, Wanda, Amanda, Hacienda, Panda, Uganda....
When they go to show the costume place at the beginning of the show, it always sounds like Irish music. Tomorrow is St Patrick's Day, 2022. Have a good one! 😊☘

andree france paquette o agree 💯 %! Whoever cast Joe to act like that was horrible. He should have been more sympathetic & liked being married & they should have had kids!! After the Joe character left the show sucked BIG TIME!!
My grandma used to make butter bean sandwiches ( cold ones) and fried potato sandwiches lol. I had my own weird concoction. Potted ham with sweet pickles and nacho cheese doritos
Haven't watched this for a while. On this viewing, I have to wonder what in the world Johnny Venture would know about Vogue magazine (5:37)? I'd think his idea of high fashion for women would've included Frederick's of Hollywood (back then, of course).
Melanie They are in a fashion capital, NYC, but more importantly, fashion magazines had major influence in those days, you couldn't help but be aware of them back then. People used to use the word "Vogue" to describe someone who was stylish...Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Glamour magazines were household names back then.
Hmmm.... after they leave the office 2:50 the camera zooms into Brenda's apartment, yet they are up in Rhoda's? Then at 9:55 they find the correct apartment! The magic of TV! On a different note I could not stand Carlton...
Rhoda working in this costume shop was a big mistake. The show should have kept the window dressing business concept and Myrna, Rhoda and Myrna reminds me of Grace and Karen's relationship on Will and Grace. By season 4, it seemed liked they didn't know what to do with the direction of the show. They also should have kept the characters of Gary and Johnny Venture. Jack was an uninteresting, unlikeable, poor-man's version of Lou Grant, very bad decision.
They sure have problems doing anything, something always happens. Even Rhoda's own marriage just lasted 2 years. I never did know what the problem was, joe just said they had issues. Johnny was so cute, but a jerk.
I think what happens is the writers run out of ideas. I'm not sure about how it should have ended, but like most shows, they aren't told until they show up for work... Sad...they run their course, as things change with the times. I can't see Rhoda making it on into the 80s.

Love the first outfit with the kaki vest and the red hoodie. Spot on for today.

I preferred Gary to Benny. I think the friendship dynamic of the show suffered when Gary left.
Classic SelfLoveChic.
