Hey man - I took the stock bridgeplate from the guitar, and I drilled 2 holes for the roller bridge posts (only about 1/8"). I took the posts off of the Trem set and put them into the stock bridge - they screwed right in place. then I had to file down the back of the bridge for string clearance. I've added the link to the TDPRI Post that describes the whole build. - It's in the description.
Greetings from Aussie, great sounds, love your mods to the pick ups, very informative, everybody except for those who are halfway up themselves makes mistakes it sounded great from my end!
I was looking at this pickup combo for my blacktop tele. I think this sold me. I will simplify with a three way and have a coil split on the tone knob for turning off the inner coil of the bridge for some killer twang and western swing!
Great guitar and mods, I was actually looking at putting these same pickups and trem into a cheap special II knock-off to create a poor man's Deusenberg too(minus the semi-hollow though). Definitely a great deal for someone who can't throw down that kind of cash. It was great hearing all of it in a guitar already.
Just my 2 cents I got one for my telecaster and it would not intonate a luthier put it on he had to move the roller bridge forward cut the studs off drill and tap new holes of course the neck has to be shimmed after that I love it far better than a bigsby just have to modify a bit:)
watched this video a couple of times, am kind of jonesing for one of those 610s. one other thing, perhaps a very thin rubber or polypropylene bushing would help that spring situation (help it seat better(. you'd have to fasion your own, but the kind you find at auto supply stores might be a good start (and you'd have to sliver pieces off of it to get it thin enough). not sure but it might be something to try...
Fantastic tone on the clean sections especially. You play way better than me, don't be so hard on yourself! I learned from (a very bad) experience) that the absolute best affordable trem for a tele is the deusenburg short tremolo: HATED the xTrem: string spacing on the trem and the bridge (in a bridge/trem set that they claim is carefully engineered) doesn't match up. terrible spring, very limited range, arm too close to the body of the guitar. Used it for a couple hours, then ordered a les trem, which has given me absurd bend range (major third up, fifth down) and great tone. Excellent tuning stability if you spray some aerosol locksmith's graphite into a plastic cup, coat a toothpick and hit the nut slots. You have to modify an ashtray bridge by slotting the back ridge to let the strings pass over, which seems hard, but isn't especially w a nickel-plated bridge w 3 compensated saddles(I used a mighty might, about $25.) Pretty easy mod: whole thing took me an hour (but I still have a flippiin hole from one of the xTRem screws that the Deusuenburg doesn't cover. Small price to pay for a tele with near-Floyd tremolo range! Deusenburg trem was only about $25 more than the seriously awful xTRem. rockinger.com
Hey Hugh - I can't believe this got trapped in my inbox for 2 years - it was marked as spam. First - LOVE the Doozys!! Second - I didn't even know that you could buy their Trems separately from their Guitars. Sick! Thanks for the Share - sorry I'm so late getting to it - I've already replaced this guitar with something more "official".
Nice mods, to the guitar, i like them. I have the same guitar in white, and I am going to do the same mods to mine, thanks to you demo-ing, your mods. I have been wondering about the gfs xtrems, and those same pickups that you have now. Thanks, and don't be so hard on yourself. you did a great job, and we all sometimes get " stage freeze" ( we're not afraid, we just seem to forget @#$%&, once in a while, it happens to me sometimes, too. Thanks, and peace to you.
dead on dire straits tone, wow... thanks for the review and I like what you've done with the guitar. Quick question, I've had trouble fitting standard fender tele necks on xavieres in the past (few years back though), and I don't like doing too much pocket work (I suck at doing "clean" work.... did you have any problem fitting on an aftermarket neck on yours (did you have to file at all or redrill)?
Spring popping out is a design function not a quality issue. The most expensive Bigsby if you pull high will pop out not because it is crap but due to the way it is designed. Most people use those terms interchangeably and they are not. I would also guess the arm has a tension adjustment.
Thanks. The post helps. I guess my biggest concern are distances for the holes , mounting the trem. I understand that setting these up 1/4" off can mean big intonating problems but how does one know what the proper measurements are? I hope I did not skim too fast. I did not see measurements in the TELE forum..did I miss 'em? You still play it a good deal?
So... It's been a while since this video was posted... Do you still have this guitar? How has this trim system been holding up if you do still have it? I'm interested in buying one of these over a bigsby based on price and I kind of wanted to know how it was hanging in there? Thanks.
Hey Joel! I loved this guitar while I had it. I kept it for a little over a year - and decided...JUST for fun...that I wanted to super-size it. So I made another video on this channel that has the guitar that replaced it - and has an actual Bigsby - but this trem is still a great choice if you want to go for that "Vibe" and a Bigsby is too much. Couple things to think about. 1 - stringing this thing is sooooo much easier than a Bigsby - to the point where I had to just get the Vibramate wing thing to make my life easier on the Bigsby. 2. The metal on this is much cheaper than a Bigsby - so I'm not sure how durable it is - or the affect on tone. But it's noticeable poorer quality metal. 3 - I love the rollerbar feature. 4. it's HALF as much as the lowest tier bigsby in most cases. but it won't have a great re-sale value if you don't like it...do with that what you will. Cheers man,
I think they sound great for blues - I did a more high-quality build that might be a better reference for blues stuff? ruclips.net/video/1NJ63ZTmKqU/видео.html They're a bit High-Output for bluesy stuff - which is why I backed the whole pickup off the strings and adjusted the pole pieces to compensate. Worked well for me.
Guys - So sorry - that diagram was buried far far away. I posted it on the description! Have at! Just remember - I'm not an expert in wiring, so this came out of trial and error. hopefully it works for you guys! Grunge On!

Good review. Nice tone.

Sounds sick!
Looks like you ended up with a pretty sweet guitar. Nice!
Great build it sounds really good!

I like the position 4 sound.
Nice guitar! I thought about an Xaviere, but went with a Schecter PTS for $200. I have a maple neck from Guitar Parts Zone on the way too.

Did you have to cut out the bridge plate that came with the trem set or did you swap the roller bridge onto a plate cut for a 'Bucker?
can this bridge be used as string thru body fixed bridge?

I think you're dead on man! It's not a 'Drop-In' type bridge, it'll take a bit of work to get it right, but it's a great mod.

Can you find another spring to mod it even more?
Hey im going to be doing a thinline build in the very near future. How do you think these pups would fair with blues

thanks what wiring diagram did you use
Actually - there wasn't one at the time...so I had to create my own. :( If I can find it - I'll post it in the deets above.
can you share your wiring diagram with me please? have this pickup set and would love to wire them this way
Guys - So sorry - that diagram was buried far far away.
