  • Wilmatte Porter Cockerell and her husband Theodore traveled the world collecting and documenting hundreds of insect species. But a remarkable find in 1910, as she walked along the streets of her new home in Boulder, Colo., gave gardeners the remarkable gift of red sunflowers, all of which are believed to have descended from Cockerell's breeding world of this dazzling sunflower mutation.

    Wow! I think this is my favorite seed story to date. I have nearly every sunflower you offer because I adore sunflowers. My husband, who was not born a farm boy, told me the reds are his favorite! I never knew this amazing history and I thank you so much for sharing it. I can’t wait to show my husband ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Learning the story behind seeds (history) is truly enjoyable and Michelle Johnson does a terrific job with the presentation. The history of red sunflowers is fascinating!

    Ordered! Time for another run through the entire Seed Stories playlist, too! Seed Story items I'm trying this year: Uzbek, pink celery, red sun, green zebra (second attempt), chioggia, and musquee de provence. Request for a "seed" story: my absolute favorite vegetable to grow from Baker Creek is the Molokai Purple... Thanks!

    Did she just say sunflowers are tall perennials? I believe they are annual flowers. Sunchokes or Jerusalem artichokes are perennials that have a sunflower flower

    • @SmallHouseFarm
      @SmallHouseFarm 3 года назад +4

      Many sunflowers are perennials! In fact, a majority of the Helianthus native to North America are perennial.. the average, domesticated, garden sunflowers and oilseed types are annuals, but some of those have even bred with their wild cousins to produce perennial cultivars!

    Interesting how Mendel's work was thrice reproduced by others and proven a fact... Yet was overshadowed by Darwin's Theory of Evolution which never was reproducible and remains paltry THEORY to this day, despite all the noise to the contrary.
