Pileated Woodpeckers Dueling! Seriously

- Usually the enormous Pileated Woodpecker stays up in the trees and away from people. But this week I witnessed 2 males having a duel which included them flying within 10 feet of me! And then fencing together on the ground for over an hour! What spectacular birds.

I expected a beak to beak sword fight. I forgot that the rule for staying alive during a wild animal duel is to touch each other as little as possible.
I had a hummingbird feeder on my balcony and I swear the hummingbirds had "sword" fights. I could clearly hear the clacking of beaks against each other as they flew next to each other!
Somebody forgot to tell the deer about the whole no-touching thing.
Just like non-hood humans
Equipped with stilettos like that could be deadly
@@remaguiremy hummingbird friends have WW2 aerial battles that sound like they are fighting with Star Wars light sabers.
Peacefully arguing for hours and hours? Sounds like two academics at a conference dinner
lol!
Now I can't unsee pileated woodpeckers as birds in suits and red neckties arguing on a table and knocking on it
We obviously don't know the same academics.
You haven't truly lived until you've seen two geriatric academics getting into a slap fight, research papers flying everywhere...
@@leyrua fully making shit up
The reason why, they don’t attack each other with their beaks, is because they know what damage they can do, and so they don’t risk exchanging blows, because they could both be wounded enough to stop them from flying, and many creatures who are well armed, act in a similar manner…….
Mutually assured birdstruction
On the other hand, there are many other animals that will fight to the death if they need to.
@@kristinaketelsen5797 . There’s very few animals, which can deal a death blow, with their very first blow(unlike these incredibly sharp, and fully hardened piercing beaks, which are designed to hit so hard, that if it wasn’t for their amazing tongues, they’d kill themselves with their first full on hit on a tree), and not only that, most of the animals that we class as being deadly, don’t usually fight, they tend to just square up to each other, and one backs down, because, if they don’t backdown, then they will be too damaged and/or too dead, to get the chance to pass on their DNA 🧬, that season or ever again, which would mean that the whole of their species would die out……
Like in the cold war 😂
@@ArghansMordonMarghek "the whole of their species would die out"? Huh? That makes no sense. Individual DNA, yes. Species, no.
This is a unique opportunity to see these two males dueling! You are lucky to capture such an amazing event!
Thank you! I felt extremely lucky!!
I am a birdwatcher who has seen 180 species of birds including pileated woodpeckers. I loved this video!
Thank you!
I'm at around 50 myself and I still put the pileated in my top 5 with nuthatches and the great blue herons. Their eyes have a really special intensity that conveys emotion and intelligence
Awesome capture of their interaction! This bird will be a holy grail sighting for me. I've seen 214 species, and have heard Pileated calls several times, just haven't laid eyes on one, yet. This was fascinating to see 👍🏼
I believe Birder is the term.
I'm glad that they were able to work it out without resorting to violence.
I imagine the female on the nest telling them "c'mon guys you're better than this".
Forget throwing hands, a dance off will settle it
I’m doing a large landscaping project behind my bosses house. He backs up to the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge. We have a bunch of Pileated Woodpeckers in the woods and I listen to them and watch them throughout the day. Beautiful birds.
That sounds wonderful! They're a joy to observe
Must sound like WWII.@@GetToKnowNature
It is always a treat to see ONE of these incredible birds. But to see two like this, WOW.
when you have to fight to maintain your rep but you don't actually want to get hit
Wow, absolutely amazing. You are indeed privileged to have witnessed this wonderful spectacle. ❤
I felt incredibly lucky!
I've seen Northern Flickers do this but never Pileated Woodpeckers! They are so huge to begin with but seeing these two was awesome. I can see why you were overwhelmed to witness such a spectacle!! ❤❤
I'm late to comment, but have you tried suet? Woodpeckers seem to absolutely love it, I've been able to attract every kind of woodpecker in my region using those sticky little cakes
I appreciate you for filming this and sharing it with us!
It was my pleasure!
It's always a treat to spot one of these big boys, this was an amazing capture! Good job!
Thanks a lot! Yes, always a treat
Back before everyone had phones, I had a woodpecker fall in love with a small metal fairy on my porch. Everyday he would bring her a big juicy bug and try to give it to her. After a few weeks, he gave up! LOL
They are so beautiful they almost don’t look real. Great video!
Thank you! It is almost unbelievable!
I know there’s absolutely no reason to tell you how lucky you are, I’m sure you know! What an amazing gift that you were able to capture on “film“. My sister lives on five wooded acres and we hear them a bit more often than we see them. That is until they started pecking apart her cedar home. She’s an avid birdfeeder and the smaller chickadees and titmice were caching sunflower seeds in the tiny crevices in her wood home. Then the pileated would come behind them and destroy large pieces of wood to get to the seed. A purchase of those large yellow balloons with “eyeballs” now adorn the perimeter of her home to keep them at bay. 😳
They can really tear into wood if there's food involved! Yes, I definitely know how lucky this was! It was a once in a lifetime event
So cute how they just hop and flop around!
I love these birds. One passed our car the other day, and nobody saw it but me. I said, "Wow, it's a pileated woodpecker," and everyone ignored me. 🙁
Some people get it and some don't, I guess. Their loss I say 😊
...so cute. " I can do anything you can do. I can do anything better than you" in action. I've seen many woodpeckers, but never anything like this. Thanks!
Last summer I came across a pair of them that were doing the same thing! Hopping and circling around a tree, they were so caught up in their competition that they didn't notice me. Thanks for the video, it reminds me of Westside Story with circling and snapping fingers, cue dramatic music!
You're so right about West Side Story! That's awesome that you got to see this too
@@GetToKnowNature The older I get, the more I love bird watching. I'm fortunate to live on the Mississippi Flyway, migration season is the best time of the year! As you may have seen on your Ruby Crowned Kinglet video, I'm a new subscriber. I appreciate what you're doing, you're going to hear alot from me in the comments.
Your faithful viewer, Jim
Thanks for sharing such a cool video. It's not something you see everyday. Such lovely birds.
That’s the most gentle and beautiful duel I could have ever imagined
I actually got to witness this very thing in my backyard ❤️
How exciting!!
"I'm prettiest!"
"No, I'm prettiest! See??"
Beautiful birds! Thank you for not having any music!!!!
I saw my 1st pileated peckers today in east Arkansas on the farm.Big and beautiful.
Nice!
I see them where I live and they’re such eccentric, funny and seemingly happy birds.
They are regular visits to trees on our property -- an acre of leafy suburb in Connecticut. They have a distinctive "Woody Woodpecker" call, too! Very easy to identify and louder than a crow's caw.
My behavioral theory: bonding in unity against unprovoked terrorism of birds of prey; respectfully giving each other full attention in case a large hawk comes, knowing they could likely avoid loads of pain together. 👌 Glad this showed up on me youtube front page thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! A pair stays on the same territory year round but the young ones have to go find their own place once they're grown. That can lead to some territorial disputes like this
My favorite woodpecker. Beautiful indeed. Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure! They really are special
This is how Enkidu and Gilgamesh meet.
Amazing video. What a great find.
When they're on the ground, wings out, beaks in the air, I can almost hear them whispering, "Come at me, bro."
Thank you! The posturing was just amazing
That's such an amazing thing to see, and just so awesome. Seeing them move like that makes me think of the two crabs from Nemo that are always sitting on that pipeline underwater. Whether it's a fish passing by, or just the two of them being territorial with each other, all they do is raise their claws and go "Heyyyy...HEYY...heyyyy...." 🤣
Best Dance-off ever.
Wow. That's amazing
I still can't believe it happened!
"I shall hop around you until that scares you off!"
Bird1: Look! I'm fabulous!
Bird2: No, YOU look! I'm more fabulous!
"Stop arguing, you two. You're both fabulous!"
Ooh WOW wow wow, how amazing!
I still can't believe this happened! It was incredible!
Amazing how they don't touch each other while "fighting"!! Great video!! Thanks!!🥰🥰❤️❤️❣️❣️💕💕👄👄💋💋😇😇🙏🙏
My pleasure! Thank you!
Don't be overwhelmed...just be whelmed. This is a very nice video. Thanks for posting
I watched this multiple times. It cracks me up completely. You did a wonderful job. I shared this with other family members in they appreciated it. I told my students at the elementary school all about it and they were also appreciative.
Awww, thank you so much for sharing that! It's wonderful to hear that people enjoy nature and my videos. ☺️😊
I love how they keep turning their beaks up higher like: hey! Hey! I'm not gonna stab ya! Watch how un-stabby I am! You better be equally as un-stabby!
It was such a performance!
Completely Glorious. What a Gift Nature offers us. Bless Always.
Have not seen this before. Pretty cool 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing this video! Birds and animals are fascinating! 💜
My pleasure! They really are
They are so gorgeous!
That HAD to be some type of mating dance, and the women were watching from the trees.....that is so phenomenal. You were surely blessed to get this. I lived almost in the woods for awhile, I did get some awesome pics, but NOTHING even close to this! FANTASTIC!
Where I lived 10 years ago, I used to see these also daily. I miss seeing them so much.
I hope you get to see them again sometime!
Rory-Not Gail: I love to see and hear Pileateds while I'm sitting in my deer stand or otherwise in the woods.
Great capture
You are blessed to see two of these they are the biggest of their species together especially two males they are very territorial .
I can't get enough of Pileated Woodpeckers.. thanks for the footage.. amazing
“Touch me don’t touch me bro!!”
My favorite woodpecker! When these guys and gals come to visit our feeders, the other patrons politely step aside and wait patiently till they eat their fill, for good reason 😂
Wow, that was amazing! Thanks!
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
That is such a rare encounter! What a blessing. Usually all the critters in the forest disappear as soon as they hear me unzip my camera bag. 😂
I know right? It was truly remarkable to have them so close to the path and entirely ignoring me.
I saw the same behavior one day hiking, you hear their call 100x more often than actually seeing them. What a beautiful bird!
I am blessed to have a pair visiting the pines in my back neighbor’s yard. We have a enclosed porch and I get to enjoy them frequently, it never gets old!
Beautiful footage! For people who've never seen them, these are huge birds, and they could do incredible damage with those beaks. I've seen them in the trees behind my house, only one at a time though. Watching them jockey for supremacy like this must have been quite a treat, thank you for sharing the footage!
Thank you! Yes, the way they can go after insects deep in a tree is amazing!
Favorite video of the day! I have seen some of these behavior on a few occasions but more often on Northern Flickers. I have been fortunate enough to see Pileated Woodpeckers many times and each time is a thrill! On the wall above my desk in a print of an image I took of Papa feeding the youngsters. I got to watch them for four hours one day and four hours another and then long breaks while they hunted up more food, my favorite bird.
Oh wow, it sounds like you're had some great experiences with woodpeckers! That's awesome
When that one neighbor moves in and the HOA lets them do anything they want!
Fantastic footage! Well captured! Talk about right place at the right time!
Thank you. Yes, I felt so lucky!
Thank you for a peek into a male piliated woodpecker's world because, yes, they are very shy. I get them at my feeder, but they're never there long.
So shy usually! I couldn't believe they were out in the open like this!
@@GetToKnowNature you literally won the bird lottery 😂
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼
Wonderful, I could watch these birds for hours. Especially while they are working.
That was a beautiful show! Those birds are extraordinary creatures!❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing, that was great! Loved the hopping!😃
It's my pleasure! Yeah, the hopping was pretty fun to see
Wow, I really love this!! I’ve never seen anything like this at all. I get pileated woodpeckers in my yard and it’s always such a special thrill seeing them amongst dozens of other species. But I have never seen two at the same time - much less in an elegant, ballet-style battle. Fabulous.💚
Thank you! That's great you get them in your yard, they're always a thrill to see. I almost never see more than one either, this was a truly lucky encounter!
We have some of these right here along the Bow river in Calgary. Beautiful birds
Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
I just can't get over their cute hopping.
Like, I cannot take the fact they're fighting over territory seriously cuz of their constant silly hops lol
The hopping was adorable. But they were so silently serious about the whole thing
When I hear a commotion in the leaf litter it's usually a blackbird digging for worms. That is quite a different experience you had!
It was once in a lifetime!
Beautiful and a wonderful experience
It was stunning and I felt so lucky. Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to film this for us to see. I was enthralled!
That was the coolest video I have seen all year, thank you.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
So that's how you take the term "let's dance" seriously in a duel
So very serious!
That's exactly how I duel.
I love these birds. So beautiful and u must have been very excited. I would have been.
They were so engaged with each other that they didn't notice you. These birds are normally very shy.
Yes, it was very surprising to have them so near the path. Usually they fly off if I even think about looking at them!
This is extraordinary. Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure! It was truly remarkable
What a marvelous dance, they must've have been evenly matched and trying to see who gets tired first. That's pretty remarkable.
Truly an intellectual dual.
Amazing. Fascinating woodpeckers. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! So lucky to capture this ❤
I definitely felt lucky! A once in a lifetime experience
Great cinematography
Thank you!
Lots of thoughts at once! They are beautiful birds. Very funny at times! And isn't it unique how every creature has it's own culture, its own ways of communicating? These two certainly understood each other quite well. May the best male win (hopefully peacefully with no injuries aside from maybe hurt feelings!).
What an amazing sight! We all appreciate your video!
Wow two both males
VERY COOL! once in a lifetime!
What a great video of one of my favorite birds. Amazing video!
Thank you!
If only all conflicts were settled this way! We have much to learn, and enjoy, from earth's other beings. Thanks for posting.
Amazing footage many humans can learn from Pileated Woodpeckers dueling, working things out with no physical harm done, note to nations at war!
This must be what fights in JJBA look like to non-stand users.
Outstanding footage !!! Thank you so very much!!!😍
Seeing this video makes this my “Seek Beauty Every Day” moment! Thank you again. 🥰
Both these 2 really throw down, don't they. Love it ❤❤❤
Oh my gosh !!! How cool and once in a lifetime to see.
It was astounding! I felt very lucky.
"Mostly they didn't touch each other. There was posing and flapping."
Just the bois handling their business I guess
But in a very dignified manner, nobody gets hurt!
