First time there have been both the Male and Female Pileated Woodpeckers on my feeder in Kalamazoo, Michigan! The female arrives first then eats from the bowl on the right side. The male arrives later and eats on the left side suet cake!

We have them here in Western North Carolina, and when they peck at the tree, it sounds like someone is using a baseball bat. These guys are beautiful!
They are quite powerful!! I don't hear them drumming very often, but it is very distinguishable when they are drumming!
These birds are pre historic they are amazing creatures that GOD has blessed us with
I saw pileated woodpeckers for the first time in my life last year. They were on my deck, and I couldn’t believe how huge they were! They easily dwarfed most of the other birds I’ve seen in my neighborhood.
In East Tennessee😘In 1989 I saw one that was two feet tall on side of tree stump. Still to this day I haven’t seen in nature something so surreal. Infinite Gratitude 🙏🏻 Gaia💙🌟💙
I saw one 2 feet or larger on a broken tree trunk. No one believes me lol
Are You Sure? Because You Could Have Seen An Ivory Billed Woodpecker! Because There Body’s Are About 2 Feet Big And Also Have An 3 Feet Wing Span! So When You Said That You Saw A Woodpecker About 2 Feet Big! That Is Very Interesting!🤔
A fabulous video of my favourite North- American
Woodpeckers
Thanks for watching! They are such amazing birds!!
That's insane. Not one, but two!!
Such a blessing, thanks for sharing.
I couldn't believe it when I saw it!!
They look so prehistoric!
May they both have beautiful ginger babies.
Thank you neighbor! This is spectacular. I live in Portage, Michigan. I get the three smaller woodpeckers at my feeders but am too far away from the woods for Pileated.
Love these big birds.
We have them in our forested backyard in suburban St. Louis, MO. Beautiful birds!
Fantastic! Thank you. I have them in my backyard in Maryland and they sound like jackhammers. They won't come to my porch feeders ever. I get the red headed and the downy but never the pileated. They are too wild. They don't like people. The size of crows. Whenever I see one, I think of the Ivory Bills which were in the Deep South that are now extinct and wish they weren't extinct. Thanks again beautiful birds.
They are such amazing birds! I feel very lucky to have them coming to my feeders! This feeder is about 25-30 feet from the house, so I am surprised at hoe much time they spend out there. I believe this pair might be nesting nearby too :)
We have some in MA where I take a walk …..they look like something in a Disney movie.
Katra putnu vērotāja sapnis! Paldies! / Every bird watcher's dream. Thank you !
Impressive birds! I've caught glimpses of them a few times in a Seattle wooded area.
Very handsome birds, the pileateds. Spooky as all get-out, though.
Thank you for posting this I used to live in Virginia where there were many pileated woodpeckers but I was never able to get a good picture of one and I think they are absolutely beautiful
I live in Virginia and they come around my house. My idiot neighbors just chopped down a bunch of old oaks and pines that the Pileated like to hang out in. Makes me sick. I recently did a watercolor of a female, over the summer. I love birds.
@@sylphofthewildwoods5518 I used to deliver mail around the lake
What is the food in the bowls they are enjoying. It looks like suit.
@@carolinehatley9393
I think it is suet. That's what they like to eat.
@@sylphofthewildwoods5518
Why idiot? If the trees collapse onto his property or someone else’s are you gonna pay for the potential damage? Besides dead standing trees are good for the fireplace.
I have seem them several times ,,,Florida tampa, ft lauderdale,,,,and now in orlando i have seen 2 ,,,,they came to my yard several times,, they VERY VERY LOUD😂😂😂,,,, I hear them before i see them,,
They are pretty good at making noise before landing on the feeder here too!
Oh yes , and lots of sunflower seeds . 🙏🐦⬛🐦⬛❤ And I like the background . 🌲🌳🍂. 👍
This is such a wonderful video. They look very similar, almost identical. . .except that one has a Red Moustache, besides the Red cheek stripe. Thanks so much for sharing this w/us The Bird Perch.
What an excellent capture. They are so beautiful. We’ve lived in Oklahoma for over 25 years and I have only seen one twice. Thank you for sharing.
Go to the Oxley Nature Center (a city nature area) on the north side of Tulsa in the winter and you will have a pretty good chance of seeing one.
Thank you for the information
I have a mated pair in Niles, MI that hang out year around. They can tear a tree apart looking for their favorite food, ants.
That's great! I haven't seen this pair in a while, not sure if they are still nearby. I think I have seen some new Pileated Woodpeckers that looked like they were hatched this year!
Nice!!!
I found a dead one in front of my house a few years ago. I live in a typical suburban neighborhood; not exactly the habitat for these birds. It wasn’t very big so I assume it was a juvenile. My theory is it chose to roost on top of a utility pole that night. We had a out of season cold snap that night and it died from exposure. I called DCNR and a Game Warden came and took it. He said he would turn it over to a college to do a necropsy to determine COD worried it could be due to some type of disease.
Beautiful! 😍 🤩
What a perfect wild habitat.
💙💛💚❤️🧡💜
Beautiful bird!
Amazing :o
Absolutely Beautiful! Thank you for sharing 🤗
It’s Woody!
" Guess Who ?" 💖
And his girlfriend Winnie, too
Beautiful birds 😍😍🥰🥰
I agree!! Never get tired of seeing them!!
The one that's calling is it's mate.
Pileated are the biggest of their species in the forests , they love suet cakes .
Wonderful nature !!!❤👍👍👍
I agree!! :) Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This is awesome! Love these birds!
Bet those guys make quick work of a suet block.
They sure can!
Stunning gorgeous birds ... Very quick +++ powerful !! 💖 💖
We have two nest or 9n our woods. We love having them hang out on our bird feeders but they have damaged the posts on our cedar deck so that we must replace the posts.😏
Absolutely wonderful!! My wife and I have only seen these Woodpeckers a couple of times in our life. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing your experience. What are you feeding them?
The male on the left is eating from a suet cake and the female on the right is eating suet nugget crumbs out of a bowl where I put suet nuggets each day!
@@GinaHarmeyer I lost the bet with my wife. I bet dried meal worms. She will be a happy winner.
@@Rottingboards Props to your wife! lol :D
So awesome this
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Nice sharp film
:)
I have one that lives in the tree in my front yard.
That's awesome!
Assuming the fashionably late is the female. 😂
lol :)
These are the johnny rottens of the bird world.
"Anarchy for the trees yay, is coming sometime maybe"
"May the seeds rise with you"
😆😂
I have a couple of these living in my front yard in a huge Sycamore Tree. My plan is to build a platform feeder (similar to yours) and draw them into better camera range. Congratulations on your video capture! They are beautiful!
That's awesome! I think they like the easy access to the suet feeders! I also have a couple large woodpecker hanging suet feeders in the front yard. They use those as well. I had heard you could attract them with those feeders, so I put one out and it was after that when I started seeing them at the platform feeder. They are one of my favorites to have around!! Good luck with your setup!
Thank you for the quick response! Please answer one question for me. Should I add a top to the platform? It will still be a fly threw type of feeder. Or, should I just leave it without the top and hold back on some of the seeds, nuts, etc.?@@thebirdperch_MI
@@outdoorztime2923 I have thought about adding a cover over my platform. Last year I had a hawk grab a Red-Bellied Woodpecker off the platform. There is a large oak tree branch that hangs over it, providing some cover but it doesn't really stop the hawks. I don't think it's a common occurrence, probably because there are a lot of birds in my yard in general.
someone needs to find the Ivory Billed Woodpecker

Living in Louisiana 2 years ago I say a mother fight off a snake that climbed 40 ft in the air to get her chicks. She destroyed that snake. It was an amazing thing to see
Wow!!! Must have been quite a sight!
@@thebirdperch_MI it truly was
What is in the bowl?
I usually put suet nuggets in the bowl so I think she was eating the crumbs from the suet nuggets I had put out earlier :)
Birds are amazing--just another reason for me to not eat eggs (as I have a family history of Cancer the choline in eggs is the other). Really great video--thank you
Hi! So happy to find this post. We live in Kzoo and have had a Pileated at our feeder, too! Recently saw a couple of Flickers which I don't remember ever seeing at the feeder. Our property is alongside a woodland and water. Wondering what kind of suet you feed and local resources you may be able to share...Thanks for the posts and excited to see what's happening at your feeder! I made one batch of suet myself with my own ingredients, fat balls. Using beef suet and my own rendered lard. Thoughts?
I buy suet from Wedel's Nursery in Kalamazoo (they have a lot of bird stuff!), it's a brand called Birdwatchers Best and I get the nutty butter flavor. The birds definitely prefer this over other brands I have gotten. It's getting to be pretty expensive, but so is everything else! I have never tried making my own.
@@thebirdperch_MI Thanks for the answer! Love Wedel's, but you are right, pricey! My home made suet has been a hit with woodpeckers and surprisingly many other birds. Getting ready to make my annual batch of grape jelly for the B. Orioles :) We are blessed with so many beautiful birds and wildlife. Thanks again for sharing. Love what you are doing.
May I ask you what kind of camera system you are using? I'd love to surprise my husband
I am using a Birdsy video camera. It's an all weather camera that I leave out year round. It uses AI to identify the birds. I have been using them since 2019! You can find more information at www.birdsy.com :)
Sorry, I don’t know how to distinguish pileated woodpecker’s which one is the male and which one is the female? thanks friends
Larger woodpecker is male, which is the second to arrive at the feeder.
Another way to distinguish is that the male has a full red head and the female has a grey patch on the front of her head. Also, the males have a red stripe on the face but the female has a black stripe in the same area! Hope this helps!
