John Grisham's bestseller A Time to Kill hits the screen with incendiary force, directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever, The Client). Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey and Kevin Spacey portray the principals in a murder trial that brings a small Mississippi town's racial tensions to the flashpoint. Amid a frenzy of activist marches, Klan terror, media clamor and brutal riots, an unseasoned but idealistic young attorney mounts a stirring courtroom battle for justice. The superb ensemble also includes Brenda Fricker, Oliver Platt, Charles S. Dutton, Ashley Judd, Patrick McGoohan, Chris Cooper and both Donald and Keifer Sutherland. These and other talents make A Time to Kill "one ofthe year's most powerful films"
Actors: Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew Mc Conaughey, Oliver Platt, Kevin Spacey, Ashley Judd, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland
Director: Joel Schumacher
Genres: Drama, Romance

Courtroom dramas .....
12 Angry Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
Anatomy of a Murder
A Few Good Men
The Accused
Philadelphia
I'm a senior on a fixed income and cannot afford to be a patreon but I watch all your videos. Maybe you could put these on a list so your members can vote? Thank you.
You need to watch 12 Angry Men. The 1957 version.
To Kill a Mockingbird is perhaps the best courtroom drama.
Classic movie of the highest caliber. That movie should be on the top of his list as a great reader. He should have read the book. Best book adaptation ever, in my opinion.
Definitely an awesome movie and dealing with the same issues. But I am partial to 12 Angry Men. Dealing with the same issues.
@@ladysky2883 12 Angry Men is not exactly a courtroom drama, though.
@@ladysky2883 I like the newer version tho
@@TheWhiskerCollector The book was way better yeah, I think The Client was the best adaptation ever though.
RIP to the great actor, Donald Sutherland, Jake Brigance’s mentor, Lucien, who passed away June 20th. If it’s not obvious, he’s Kiefer Sutherlin’s father. Kiefer, who played Freddie Lee Cobb in this film.
This was one of three movie they were in together. The others were Max Dugan Returns (1983) and Forsaken (2015).
Donald Sutherland has done some great acting over the decades, but tbh, my favorite character he ever played was Lucien Wilbanks. May he RIP.
What about a jury room drama? 12 Angry Men (1950s version) is one of the best movies ever made.
Author John Grisham famously writes courtroom/legal dramas set in The South, where he’s from, many of which have been made into some great movies with some big stars, including this one. Pelican Brief (Julia Roberts, Denzel), The Firm (Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman), The Rainmaker (Matt Damon, director Coppola), Runaway Jury (John Cusack, Hackman, Dustin Hoffman), and The Client (Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones) are a few others.
Erin Brocovich is another non-Grisham courtroom drama based on a true story starring Julia Roberts that got a lot of acclaim when it came out in 2000. The real Erin Brockovich said it’s 98% true.
The actress playing Matthew's wife is Ashley Judd. Yes those Judds, Ashley went into acting and her mother and sister are singers.
She's in _Kiss the Girls_ with Morgan Freeman.
11:00 that is Kiefer Sutherland, he and his dad Donald were in 3 movies together
For awesome shows, I'd recommend Designated Survivor with Kiefer Sutherland
@@RealJustinCrow 24 would be a great series with Keifer
@@bonitaburroughs8673 I'm aware of it and it's strong reputation, But never actually watched it. I'm only going of my own experience
Ghosts of Mississippi is another great courtroom drama about the murderer of Medgar Evers.
So the guy from the Hunger Games is Donald Sutherland and the guy from Lost Boys is his son Kiefer Sutherland!
All time favorite court room drama is “A Few Good Men”! I LOVE that movie!!!
Primal Fear, is also a favorite and made me a die hard Ed Norton fan forever.
In general, I really enjoy just about all the John Grisham movie adaptations.
The Client and The Firm are 2 I will watch every time they air.
This one just always breaks my heart, but a great film and performances from all the actors.
FYI Donald Sutherland is Kiefer’s father, both great actors.
I love A Few Good Men. It's a great Courtroom Drama.
"You can't handle the truth!"
Yup, already reacted to that one, go check it out: ruclips.net/video/Yt3V95SUu28/видео.html
I think all us parents understand this movie well. Especially father's with daughters
I will do what I must to protect my daughter. I see nothing wrong with what happens to those two. I'd do the same thing
I wouldn't even think twice. I'd gladly spend the rest of my life in jail and sleep like a baby afterwards
Runaway Jury is a good one. Another movie you might consider is Double Jeopardy. Not a courtroom drama so much as a justice drama. It stars Ashley Judd, who played Jake's wife in this film.
Double Jeopardy is so good!
One of my favorite courtroom movies is “The Client”, starring Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones.
@@angiebudge7537 Omg im glad you recommended this such a good movie and one of Susan Sarandons best!
The Judge plays the King in Braveheart
John Grishin's The Rainmaker is another great courtroom drama, also based on a book bybthe same writer as A Time To Kill.
1996 Sleepers 4 young boys friends are sent to a juvinille faciliaty only to be abuse by Guards . One of the boys becomes a bright attorney . Who tries to bring justice for his friends as Adults . A minipulation and meticulous plot already foreseen by the lawyer would be exactly the out come he has planned all along.
Another
12 Angry Men 1957 . Excellent movie . Only the word of wittnesses against the accused . What it takes for a jury to decided
Guilty or Not Guilty . The case Death is involved.
Your reactions are fantastic . I love having your company watching these movies with me .Great Job . Good to see you ,...an hour late but good to see you !
Great movie. And yes there is the courtroom drama part of it but I would argue that the courtroom drama was more a tool rather than a setting. I get where you are going but still feel that the courtroom part of it took a back seat to what was really happening in the movie. Just my opinion.
Oliver Platt (McConaughey's buddy) is another name/face to be on the watch for. A very funny actor, I would recommend Lake Placid (with Bill Pullman), Casanova (with Heath Ledger), and the 90s Three Musketeers (also with Kiefer) for more of him.
I loved him in Married to the Mob with Matthew Modine.
Loved him in Simon Birch, too.
Trivia for "A Time to Kill" -
- Released in 1996; directed by Joel Schumacher; written by Akiva Goldsman, based on the novel by John Grisham.
- This is the second and final film that Joel Schumacher did based on a Grisham novel, the other being "The Client" from 1994.
- John Grisham initially didn't want to sell the film rights, because it was one of his earliest works. Many wanted Woody Harrelson for the character of Jake Brigance, and Val Kilmer was also considered. Grisham was given casting approval.
- Samuel L. Jackson later criticized the editing, claiming there were several emotional scenes that were either cut or shortened. He claims it denied him a chance for an Oscar.
- Matthew McConaughey auditioned for Kiefer Sutherland's role of Freddie Lee Cobb.
- The actors playing Lucien Wilbanks and Freddie Lee Cobb are real-life father and son Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.
- Donald Sutherland, who played Lucien Wilbanks, was on a shortlist of greatest actors never nominated for an Oscar. He passed away a few weeks ago, on June 20, about a month shy of his 89th birthday.
- The town of Clanton, Mississippi is fictional, but there is a Canton, Mississippi in real life.
The movie Presumed Innocent (1990), based on the novel by lawyer Scott Turow, is a great courtroom drama/thriller starring Harrison Ford.
Great movie!
Curtwood Smith as the Grand Dragon led to this immortal line from a friend of mine on seeing this, and I can't not think of it every time I see it now: "THEY SET RED FOREMAN ON FIRE!"
We don't use the term, "colored", anymore, Sam Jackson's character even calls himself a Black man. Also, Lois Lane is a reporter for the Daily Planet. She isn't just Supermans girlfriend.
I'm glad someone said it! It didn't sound good or right!
Fracture from 2007 with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling is a great legal thriller. It is a great watch.
if you like this one try The Client
There are 4 books in the Jake Brigance series by John Grisham ❤
Boom.... just added them all to my list. I'll have all these read this year.
@@AwesomeUSMovies Grisham is a real fun journey. Do all of them.
@@AwesomeUSMovies Read them in order, but Sycamore Row is probably one of my favorite novels.
You should consider watching The Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McConaughey but it’s more crime thriller than courtroom.
12 Angry Men is a must. It's one of AFI's top 100 movies of all-time and the cinematography is brilliant.
Philadelphia is a great court movie
I really liked that the director of the mental institution was Dr. Chilton from "The Silence of the Lambs"! 😄 For a courtroom drama I'd recommend "12 Angry Men". Both versions from 1957 with Henry Fonda and from 1997 with Jack Lemmon are great.
Though from a serious and unfunny movie, Sam's wild eyed deliver of "Yes they deserved to 😵 and I hope they burn in 🔥!" has always struck me as humorous in any other context. Variations of 'They deserved to X and I hope they Y!' can be wildly funny when employed properly 😅
Matthew McConaughey should've won the Oscar for Jake's closing argument alone.
Not was Donnald Sutherland the president in the Hunger Games but hes the father of Keifer Sutherland(Freddie Lee Cobb) Stand By Me (Ace), The Lost Boys (David)
Not necessarily a courtroom dram, more comedish, but My Cousin Vinny is a movie you will enjoy. Not nearly as heavy.
Now try "Ghosts of Mississippi" and "Mississippi Burning"
Dr. Bass was played by M Emmet Walsh who played the shooter trying to kill Steve Martin in "The Jerk"
I asked my husband today what his fave childhood movies were so I could get them as part of a nostalgia thing, and he said he didn't know there wasn't much on the three channels he had to watch. lmao That was the 70s, though, none of us had more than that in the country. I had kind of forgotten this movie. I love it. Thank you for reminding me of it! Great reaction as always.
Growing up in NYC area, I had no idea how spoiled I was, not only having ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS but we had local programmed channels in WOR and WPIX, which also covered all the Mets and Yankees baseball games for free.
Kevin Spacy is a great actor who squandered his potential 😢
And add Mississippi Burning, not a court room drama, but is a very movie!
My thoughts: Carl Lee Haylie should have been given a medal. Not only did he save the taxpayers a lot of money but he saved other little girls & women from suffering the same fate as little Tonya. Monsters like that never change. They would have done it again & again once they got out. Putting such monsters down is the only way to protect people from them.
A Time To KiII was the first John Grisham book I read so I was excited to watch the movie. The Client is another good one.
For great courtroom dramas: The Client, A Few Good Men, Murder in the First, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Accused, and of course, Legally Blonde.😉
I kept waiting for you to recognize Doug Hutchinson (played one of the rapists) as Percy in Green Mile. I knew this movie by heart when I first saw the Green Mile - they came out just a few years apart. I was already creeped out by him in this role, which only made me cringe more when I met Percy. This movie’s cast is impeccable. The book is also fantastic by John Grisham. The Jack Brigance series includes 4 books. All of them are great stories.
R.I.P. Donald Sutherland
"The Rainmaker" is another great courtroom drama. It's also based on a John Grisham novel of the same name. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola with a fantastic cast.
This was filmed in the mid 90's in Canton MS. Samuel Jackson was staying in the neighboring city that I lived in during filming. Met him a few times when he would shop at the grocery store I worked at in the evenings. He was very nice even took pictures with us and signed autographs.
The Judge was the King in" Braveheart "
In case you do not know,, John Grisham went back to the well and wrote a couple more books featuring Jake Brigance as he got older and they are all incredible! Bias: JG is my all-time favorite author though hahaha
This movie does have a stacked cast, obviously the main three of Matthew, Samuel, and Sandra....but the guy you recognized in the car with Matthew at the beginning is Oliver Platt, and he has a long list of amazing rolls. Then Kevin Spacey of course, though Pay it Forward isn't his best movie...and you probably know him from Seven (think you've watched that) and his best performance/movie to me was American Beauty (Oscar win). Hell, I haven't even gotten deep enough into this cast - Charles Dutton (arresting sheriff), Kiefer Sutherland, more importantly to me was his dad, Donald Sutherland (RIP just a few days ago), Ashley Judd, and even Chris Cooper (the "You turn him loose" officer - who ALSO was in American Beauty in another stellar performance).
I love John Grisham work. This story and The Rainmaker is my all time favorite novel of his I enjoy. I have all his books in hardback on my book case. I love reading and watching courtroom drama. A Time To Kill is his first novel he wrote. He didn't want to sell the film right to his book but I am glad they did justice to his novel to film. I love that a all star cast in in movies and this one is the best of them. Samuel L. Jackson is amazing actor.
Sycamore Row is my favorite (close second to Time to Kill). But I do love Grisham’s novels.
@@lynn2574 That one too is good and The Exchange was good too. The sequel to The Firm.
I remember buying The Rainmaker and The Green Mile series at a bookstore next to the bus stop I used to use, back when people used to read books on the bus. Now that bookstore is a mattress store.😢
@@MessOfThings I still do. I read while my hubby driving the car.
These two movies are two of my fave courtroom drama movies.
There’s Runaway Jury, To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men, “Eye for an Eye” is not completely in the courtroom but sort of related and has a familiar face from this movie.
If you haven't already seen it, Samuel L Jackson and Geena Davis are STELLAR in "The Long Kiss Goodnight".
What kind of dogs are Bear and Oscar? Bear looks like our Cairn Terriers! We have three and love them!
Love the movie Crossroads. Please get it on YT soon!
18:36 Brenda Fricker was most famous in the UK, having played a memorable role in the medical drama 'Casualty' through the 80s. She would go on to win an Oscar for her role in My Left Foot (1989), and play the bird lady in Home Alone 2 (1992). After that she vanished into American films and TV.
She's pretty badass in the underrated Masterminds, with Patrick Stewart and Vincent Kartheiser.
This was the first movie I saw after moving to the south. My girlfriend (now wife) promised me one thing - the south, unlike the places in this film, does have air conditioning most places!
Find me Guilty with Vin Diesel is a good one.
Just wanted to drop a quick thank you for your acknowledgment and compassion for mental health and reinforcing we matter. Have been having a terribly self-destructive leaning day today and that really helped. Love your channel as always.
Knowing you're a bookworm, like I am, I recommend reading the book, as well. I read the book a few years before the movie came out, and John Grisham has said this was not only the book that put him on the map, but it's also the favorite he's written. I personally think his best is The Confession. It's the only thing that ever made me question my stance on the death penalty. I had to put that one down for a few days, because it broke my heart so much I cried. Highly recommended. Great reaction, as always.
You have to read the book. Its john Grisham
My favorite John Grisham movie!
From The Hip (1987) is one of my favorites although it seems not many people remember it
Two of my favorite court room movies are Presumed Innocent starring Harrison Ford and also The Rainmaker starring Matt Damon.
One not mentioned was Jake's wife played by the great Ashley Judd. Check out "Double Jeopardy"...
"And he just passed recently"
RIP to Donald Sutherland. What a talent! I love that he and Kiefer are both in this on opposite sides. Big props to Kiefer for playing a despicable racist.
You would love Donald's performance in Kelly's Heroes, a WW2 heist movie with Clint Eastwood.
Also M*A*S*H ☺️
BTW that guy from Hunger Games and the one from the Lost Boys are father and son. Donald and Kiefer Sutherland
hard to watch , but imho one of the Best Movies ever , Not guilty
I always love seeing father/son actors in the same movie, such as Donald and Keifer in this. What other movies feature close family members?
I think of "The Way", an obscure dollar bin DVD that is very overlooked starring Michael Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez.
I have been under a rock, I guess. I didn’t know Donald Sutherland died. R.I.P. What a fabulous actor.
This is great. Another courtroom drama I like is the Rainmaker starring Matt Damon. Erin Brokovich is wonderful, as well.
The lost boys guy and hunger games guy are father and son.
One of my all-time faves! This one doesn't get enough credit.
Reading this book again as we speak, I was so excited when I saw the reaction!
Why is there an image of Sam Jackson from the movie Black Snake Moan on the cover photo, haha?
I can't lie. If I was having to choose between Ashley Judd or Sandra Bullock, I would not know how to choose!
You want a courtroom drama watch And justice for all, Al Pacino Jack Warden 1979 Explosive ending!
My Cousin Vinny
One of the grapeists was Percy in The Green Mile.
Since you like the actor Oliver Platt here, please check out The Three Musketeers from '93. I guarantee you will enjoy that movie!
I actually do love courtroom dramas. Some of my favorites are runaway jury, Liar liar Which is actually a comedy, My cousin Vinny ! Another comedy though. A few good men is a fantastic courtroom drama! Sleepers is a really fantastic drama but I haven't seen that a long time same thing with fracture. Another fantastic movie is called the judge. I wouldn't call it a courtroom drama more of a family drama but you can't beat the acting.
You should watch Amistad. Mathew McConaughey is a lawyer in it too.
@@couch.patati-patata GREAT movie! Highly recommend!
11:02 that is a Southerland and his real daddy is th one tht played in hunger games as president. He also plyed in the original MASH Movie back in early 70's
Keefer Sunderland and Donald
The book was so good!!
This is a great movie! Watched it in a class in high school for the first time. This one is a book by John Grisham I believe. Another one of my favorite court room dramas is A Few Good Men but I think you may have already reacted to that one.
Yup, already reacted to that one, go check it out: ruclips.net/video/Yt3V95SUu28/видео.html
The Verdict is a great courtroom drama with Paul Newman.
This movie was in sync with the book. The most I've ever read and saw.
Hi James. I love your channel and have been subscribed for a long time. I'm guessing that you've probably read The Firm. It was made into a movie with Tom Cruise as the lead character. 12 Angry Men (1957) is considered by many as one of the best movies ever made. JFK (1991) is one of my favorite courtroom dramas. It is about the only trial held for the murder of John F. Kennedy. I appreciate the work you are doing, and I am also having a blast watching Breaking Bad with you on your other channel.

Last thing, I swear, but another amazing courtroom movie that this reminds me of is Ghosts of Mississippi, which is an absolutely true story of how a scumbag who shot civil rights leader Medgar Evers in his driveway in front of his kids. The racist of course was tried and had two hung juries (second one the Governor shook his hand in front of the jury) - no shock as Mississippi didn't allow Blacks to register to vote starting back in 1890, so of course they also weren't on juries. They brought him to trial in basically an unprecedented situation 30 years later because Medgar's widow, Myrlie Evers, wouldn't let it drop and a state prosecutor, Bobby DeLaughter (Alec Baldwin), took up the case when it was STILL very unpopular in the 1990s. Great story, great movie, and even the guy who plays the villain (James Woods) gave a chillingly good performance. RIP Medgar Evers.
James, love your reactions! The Trial of the Chicago Seven is a great courtroom drama movie. I haven't found a lot of reactions to it. Please put it on your list. Thanks for sharing yourself with us. ❤
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
The book is a decent read. Standard Grisham.
Great reaction as always. Thank You.3
Awesome reaction to a really frat movie! Hi Bear.
James, you should watch A Few Good Men and Twelve Angry Men. They are both fantastic.
He already did "A Few Good Men". But "Twelve Angry Men" would also be great!

Please react to _The Verdict,_ directed by Sidney Lumet (who directed _12 Angry Men),_ written by David Mamet, and starring Paul Newman. It was nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor (James Mason). The cast includes Jack Warden, the juror in _12 Angry Men_ in a hurry to get to a ball game.
Although not courtroom dramas there are two other movies directed by Sidney Lumet that I hope you will react to: _Deathtrap_ (1982) starring Christopher Reeve & Michael Caine, and _A Stranger Among Us_ (1992) starring Melanie Griffith. The former is a comedy-drama thriller about a murder plot, and the latter is a murder mystery in the same vein as _Witness_ starring Harrison Ford & Kelly McGillis.
12 Angry Men and A Few Good Men are great courtroom dramas
So many known names in this movie! 😮
Hi Bear!!! 😍
Another great courtroom drama to check out is Double Jeopardy, starring Ashley Judd. She played Mathew McConaughey’s wife in this movie. But this was a great reaction, and I absolutely thought Carl Lee should have been found innocent!! Any respectable, loving father, no matter what race he is, would do the exact same thing to protect his child.
