Thank you for showing us such a rare jewel of a church. In the warmer weather one would like to stay locally for a little holiday and then spend every day going to this church, quietly praying one’s office, and carefully studying all the beauties of the exterior and interior. It would certainly fill the best part of a week and be a spiritually enriching solo retreat. You enrich our lives Mr Barton!

In this stunning case I say God bless the Victorians. Yes they presciptively bowdlerised so much that they deemed offensive and made many mistakes in how they rectified many older buildings, but in this case they got it all so very right. Thankee Allan for another wonderful and very interesting upload and Happy New Year for 2024 to everybody reading this from here in Aotearoa New Zealand. ✨

Wonderful. That may be one of the best examples I've ever seen of the Victorian neo-Gothic movement perfectly *enhancing* (instead of overwhelming) a medieval structure. Some of Pugin's work, or the some of the Oxford chapels, or say, even All Saints Maraget Street can sometimes feel a bit overdone in their decorative exuberance. I like the balance of exuberance and restraint here.
    Great video. Thanks.

Beautiful! Makes me wonder if this was one of the East Anglian churches that Dorothy Sayres was thinking of when she described Fenchurch St. Paul in The Nine Tailors. That's the book that started me on a fascination with British ecclesiastical architecture more than 50 years ago. Maybe some day you can do an episode or two about church bells- I confess that I've never really understood the idea of change ringing, having never heard any examples here in the US.

I am on tenterhooks for your car to head off on the, what, thirty five minute drive from Brant Broughton to Stow Minster - a hidden marvel with the moniker of the ‘first Lincoln Cathedral’, as you know. Equally, if your car purrs back through Newark, the Chapter House at Southwell Minster never fails to delight. A mere ten minutes from Brant Broughton, the Pugin ceiling of Leadenham Church is marvellous (incidentally, my spell check just changed ‘Pugin’ to ‘Putin’ - a sad sign of the times!). Happy New Year - and thanks for your wonderful channel.

We can only guess why the stone Mason chose to carve this character this way, but my gf a stone Mason left Scotland due to an oppressive religious society. He never stepped inside a church after he left Scotland.

Thank goodness for Canon Sutton and the two men that he hired to restore this church! They truly had the proper vision to restore this Medieval church to its former glory. Unfortunately, a lot of Victorian era “restorations” were pretty terrible and would’ve horrified the original builders, congregants and religious leaders of that church. It’s so important to protect our architectural heritage through thoughtful and informed restorations. I’m in awe of both the original masons and craftspeople and those people who participated in the building and restoration process, especially because they didn’t have power tools or computer programs to do it.

A true jewel of a church Allan. I am so glad you ventured into it despite the heat. A sanctuary in all senses of the word. It is rare to see such a sympathetic restoration and enhancement of a 14th century church and the canon clearly had the means and connections to do it. Many thanks for this magnificent effort channel master A.B. From what little information we get on this side of the pond (where the media and publishing class are either uninterested or hostile to Christianity, and now Judaism) we are led to believe local parish churches in England are empty museums. I hope that his Victorian jewel renovated masterpiece has an active, if small, regular congregation. A great shame if it does not have regular worship.

Why had the church been allowed to fall into decay in the 1850's? I was under the impression that this period in British history was marked by a devout population that spent a great deal of their daily lives active in their Parish Churches and in devotion and worship of God. Did this area see a drop in population or some other reason that drew away patronage, and thus, the care and maintenance of this wonderful worship space?
