    I've got the 2006 version in silver which I bought just over 28 months ago, it was a one previous owner and had done under 7000 miles, it had now done another 10k miles with me. I came with three boxes, of which the panniers had never been used by the previous owner. I use it for day trips and also camping trips to Scotland, the last being to the NC500. The engine is just wonderful, full of character and actually quite economical at over 50 mpg for my use on super unleaded. The Sprint also seems to be the cheapest way into triple ownership, but actually a very versatile mount. My mods are simply the fitting of power supply leads for my heated jacket and heated gloves and the fitting of a Givi tank bag on the fuel filler ring to hold my camera gear. I would like the higher bar risers which were fitted to the later GT Sprints, Triumph did a kit but this is no longer available. The fairing is very effective in the rain at motorway speeds, diverting all the rain away.
    The brakes need a handful rather than a two finger grip and the rear pads don't seem to last very long, but I do use the rear brake a lot more than some other riders seem to. The boxes look big but are double lined, so the actual useable space is considerably less, not ideal for a large camping inventory. The gearbox was very notchy but has improved with more miles. Overall, for what I paid for mine, there is nothing to touch it, I don't see the point in spending £10-15K to buy something that hasn't done the 6000 odd miles mine had done. The Honda VFR 800 is more money new or used, less powerful and harder to work on.
    The boxes are designed to move when mounted. The top box slides left and right and the panniers pivot on the top mounting points. The bar under the seat is designed to contact the rear of both panniers and means the panniers swivel in unison. If the ends of the bars are not touching both panniers, they are not mounted correctly, which will adversely affect handling. The panniers are offered up from the rear of the bike so that the hole on the box goes into the rubber covered mount on the pillion hanger, whilst also lining up the top pivots. When correctly mounted, pushing the bottom of one pannier in causes the other pannier to be pushed out by the rod, the movement is limited by the pillion hanger mount. The rider isn't actually aware of the box movement when properly mounted, but most certainly will if mounted incorrectly!

    I find that these beauty's as with most bikes, good preventative maintenance will stop most of the thumbs down crowd, cleaning and lubing the gear change linkage, concentric chain tensioner, oil and filter and upgrading pre 08 model headlight bulbs will be a vast improvement on these bikes. Battery Maintenance also, none of these points are rocket science but will keep this amazing bike great!

    I have a 2010 abs model I commute on same colour. I took all my pannier related bits and bobs off including the ball bar you mentioned just to make it more sporty. 55watt HID bulb conversion is a must imho, issues so far- new brake light switch, new neutral switch. seized chain tensioner (just needed strip down and grease up) tend to get false neutrals when I'm lazy with my foot. tends to burn a bit of oil between services so needs topping up. Great engines on these lots of low end torque!

    I had the 2009 and now bought the 2013 Sprint GT,exceptional motor perfectly suited for touring and handle really well. The drive train and gearbox are not up to Japanese bike standard though. The GT gets 400 klm out of a tank touring and that comfortably.

    That bar below the lights is to keep the panniers level when your banked over, it helps to shift the weight and stop loaded panniers over balancing the bike. If I’m honest though never felt them make any difference when panniers are loaded.

    Good review. Shame you didn't do a test ride. I think those Trident exhausts would do my head in on a long ride. Not a great fan of black bikes but this one looked ok. Who ever installed those heated grips would probably have meant it failed the MOT as the cable fouling the high beam pass button was bad. No need for it. Nevertheless did you manage to sell it on quite quickly?
    I thought I would keep my 2008 dark navy one for 2-3 years. It will be 9 years in february. It's just such an easy bike to ride, comfortable and sounds great. Has never let me down. The suspension isn't great if you are pushing on and it can feel top heavy when fully fueled. The 2008 bikes and onwards have metal fuel tanks and better headlights although I fitted LEDs to mine which has turned night into day. I also fitted a GI Pro gear indicator, thicker starter pudding cables, better shendingen reg/rec hard wired in, Denali sound bomb air horn, Oxford heated grips but wired in properly not like the idiot who installed the ones on yours, Givi tank lock bag, Scottoiler, rear hugger. Would like to fit a black anodised brake and clutch reservoirs. Mine has only done 15k miles and not ridden in winter. It's still mint. Only one previous owner. They are great bikes for the money. I would like to fit a better rear shock and upgrade the front suspension as it does suffer from fork dive when you grab a handful of brake. The rear brake is the best rear brake I have experienced on a bike.
    I wouldn't trust a Triumph service history as mine supposedly had one but when I checked the air filter just after I got it, it was filthy and the air box was full of leaves, bits of litter, a couple of feathers, lots of thick dust and cobwebs even after only 7k miles and 7 years. I guess the Triumph service is just a tick box exercise. I service mine myself properly every year at the start of the season.
    Great bikes.

      I wasn't doing ride along video's at this time, Simply as I had no camera set up for it, but I do ride along video's now on more recent uploads. Yes the bike sold pretty quickly, but I have been considering getting another One, as they are such good all rounders. The exhausts are actually fine on longer journeys, not as loud as they might seem, just a lovely deep rumble. I ended up disconnecting the heated grips cable and re-routing it correctly. I think the servicing being so easy on these, means with the exception of valve clearance, I would always do my own 😁

    Great review. I have the same bike; same color; same year but with ABS. This bike has character. I love the look, the sound and the low end pull. The ability to feel this bike's spirit in low revs is a huge plus and what drew me to this bike. Although I don't have a ton of miles, my gut tells me that this engine will last. I've been running synthetic its whole life and have negligible oil consumption as a result. The panniers are a great design when it comes to opening & closing; removing and reattaching. They're small enough to look good, unfortunately at the expense of not accommodating a full size helmet. Also like the handling, riding position and braking. I consider this a really light bike, but I've come from bigger sport tourers.
    Agree with the clunky gearbox and occasional false neutrals. The worst aspect of this bike design-wise is how the seat is secured. The pannier design guy must have quit and a new guy designed the seat attachment 'system'. Insanely poor design, but it's something that you can live with. The Achilles heel, at least on my bike is the anemic starting system. If ignored it will leave you high and dry. It weakens when at operating temp - particularly in the summer. A healthy battery and clean connections are critical with this bike. The only other issue that the bike has recently developed is that after filling the tank, the gauge reads empty after traveling a few feet. Annoying but the gauge recovers as the level drops.

    • @Budget-Cars-And-Bikes
      @Budget-Cars-And-Bikes  5 лет назад

      I agree you have to keep an eye on the electrics with these 1050 bikes, they like to eat Sprag Clutches for a pastime! and that's not cheap to get fixed! also the rear suspension needs to be serviced regular too, including the dog leg pivot bushes :)

    If you are after a Sprint ST make sure it is a 2008 or newer.
    I have a 2007 and it kept destroying its starter motors.
    This is a known problem that Triumph do not like admit to.
    There is a kit, Part no T1229876 but YOU have to pay for it.
    I have had no further problems since the kit was fitted.
    The other irritating problem is getting the battery out.
    For the sake of a 1/4 inch, the battery cannot be removed without taking off some of bodywork.
    Otherwise, you need about three of you to get it out, one to prise the bodywork out, one to remove the bolts and one to lift out the battery. It's a real pain.
    On the 2008, the tab that goes under the front of the seat can be removed easily and the battery just lifts out. Again on the 2007 model, the lights are rubbish, they are OK in town but down a country lane, you will struggle. Apart from these problems it is a great bike with great roll on power and it sounds just great.

    I’ve owned a Sprint since the summer, I use it for commuting and it’s great for that... I’ve had sportsbikes mainly so this is a bit different to my usual bikes.. I wanted a speed triple but just couldn’t find one for the right price (will check out your review of that!).. only issue I’ve had is I’ve found the gear shift between 1st and 2nd quite stiff at slow speed... have done a few bits to try and make it better, but nothing really changes it... having read a few forums seems to be a known quirk of the sprints, just not sure whether I want to just put up with it, or change the bike at some point... apart from that I love the triple engine and even mine with a standard exhaust sounds great...love the burble and the bike sounds alive!! Makes Japanese sportsbikes seem quite boring in comparison (in my opinion!).. mine in a dark blue looks great although have to admit the black looks good esp with the wheel stickers... love the sound of your exhaust, am keeping an eye on eBay to see if any ever come up for sale 👍

      I was very lucky to find the bike already had the Trident Slash Cut exhaust when I went to see it, no mention in the advert, so a massive bonus. Didn't notice any real issue with changing 1st - 2nd gears on mine though? maybe try a decent oil change, as I have mentioned in previous video's changing to "Castrol Power Racing" oil has cured a few problems for me in the past, and maybe a better quality oil would help a little (pure guess work of course) I have to agree that the in-line 4 Japanese engines do sound pretty boring compared to a nice Triple :)

    Thanks for a great review. Bought my ST last summer great bike for touring, lovely sounding engine especially when it burbles, lots of usable power and very fast if you want to thrash it. Negatives are sticky gear box, problem at times finding neutral, heavy bike at low speed (but handles well when cranked up) and not the best starter on a cold morning. Oh! And did I mention the poor head lamps!! But in saying all this great looking bike and a joy to ride so she's a keeper.

    I am really looking to buy one of these bikes, but I'm worried it is too heavy, one of the things I enjoy the most about riding are the twisty roads and I'm worried about the weight. As you, I'm at an age that sport bikes are too uncomfortable and I'm switching to a different style. I have done a couple of naked but not absolutely convinced of them. Happy new year by the way

    • @Budget-Cars-And-Bikes
      @Budget-Cars-And-Bikes  5 лет назад +1

      To be honest when your riding without luggage it's not really any heavier than the Speed Triple 1050, they are the same bike after all, but you can lean the Sprint ST into a corner a little better due to the lower riding position.

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 5 лет назад

      If you are a shorty with short legs you will find it tall. I have 30" inside leg seam and I am on tippy toes. I would say you really need a 32 inch inside leg seam to be more comfortable and not feel like you are going to drop it. It is somewhat top heavy at slower speeds but once on the move it is fine. The riding position is quite upright, not GS or Tiger Explorer adventure bike upright, but not stretched out low like a sports bike. It's quite comfortable on long trips, plenty of space to move around on the saddle although not so much for your legs if you have engine R&G crash bungs fitted as they are right in front of your knee/upper shins. Overall it's scores 8/10 with me.

    The Sprint ST1050 is a pretty bike. Yours looks like it needs some TLC. To prevent the engine casing going like it has take the lower fairings off and use ACF50 or Scottoiler oil to protect the surface.
    Dark navy blue ones are the fastest which is the colour of mine. I put Castrol 1 racing fully synthetic in mine and it sounded shit. So going back to Motul 5100 semi synthetic. My biggest dislike of the bike is how Triumph secure the seat with 2 stupid bloody small bolts underneath the edge of the cushioning at the back adjacent to the tail fairing. I hate these with a passion. Sometimes it can be a nightmare to line the threaded tabs up with bolts to get them to screw in. Who ever at Triumph came up with this fucking stupid idea should be fired. Apart from this I love the bike. It's a bit tall if you are vertically challenged so be careful when manoeuvring slowly particularly on full lock in car parks. Love the engine though. The Trident exhaust sounds good. And as I say the bike looks quite pretty. Having thoughts of a Speed Triple RS so might chop mine in for one, but then again might keep it as it is low mileage, well looked after with one previous fastidious first owner and a full Triumph Service History.
