Do you think the next generation of consoles is going to mean that games start using more RAM? Let me know what you think!
Have you tried Forza Horizon 4 or Astroneer ?
Nope. Both next gen consoles have 16GB GDDR6 which is shared between application and video memory.
@@baroncalamityplus Yeah, that's also what I was thinking. They do have a very fast memory interface, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
still stuck with 8gb!
i've got 32 gigs in my system right now, but i still somehow manage to fill it up on a daily basis, i plan on upgrading to 64 gigs in a couple of weeks to see if that helps.
I'm only watching this so I can hear Dawid say "thidy two" as much as possible

Hahaha!! I genuinely thought I said it normally this time. 😂
@@DawidDoesTechStuff Normal for you and that's what we like!
It isn't the game that requires 16 gigs,
It is the chrometab running in the background whilst you game that bottlenecks you.
Realistically yeah, if you have a few chrome tabs, streaming, discord, it does add up. But "need" is a strong word.
@@oGPhoenixo You definitely need at least 16 gigs of ram in this day and age. Back when GTA 5 came out I was still rocking 8 gigs, GTA 5 and Discord alone would consume all of it and it severely impacted GTA's performance.
I have on average 30-40 tabs open at all times, and I never close my web browser haha. Although, even if I only had 16 gigs, it really wouldn't matter too much as computers are pretty good at moving data between memory and virtual ram based on what you are doing at any given time. Maybe if you are using a hdd that could be an issue, but I think it's safe to say the majority of people at least have an ssd nowadays. It really only impacts you if you are needing to use more then 16 gigs at once. Having tabs open in the background while you game won't actually impact you, it would simply be offloaded to your virtual ram space if you need more ram for what you are doing and only retrieved when needed. If you had programs actively running in the background while you game, that would be an issue. But web browsers aren't actively running in the background as much as they are just static and there, resting and not actually needed to be loaded in system ram while waiting for you access them.
@@gerble36 i cant even fathom needing 30-40 tabs open. i get more than 5 and i get annoyed finding the one i want.
@@gerble36 I actually notice a significant performance-drop in CoD Warzone when I leave Firefox open in the background with 16GB of Ram and it's really annoying having to close my browser while I'm playing. I even experience more crashes when I forget to close it.
You don’t need 32Gb but you’ll definitely benefit from it. Not in terms of fps but for the overall user experience; less stuttering, more smoothness, just a better experience overall.
It's a shame people don't understand the difference between benchmarks and user experience. The only way you can show someone the difference is by using their current system with 16GB and then upgrading to 32GB.
@@SiCSpiT1 I'm late to the party here but I've noticed so many weird "benchmark" videos where the creator concludes that because of framerates there's no difference in performance when you can see with your eyeballs that one is significantly visibly smoother than the other.
@@K.C-2049 I remember one of the guys from Hardware Unboxed answering a subscriber question about 'who would benefit more from having 32GB of RAM between casual and competitive players,' the one with the darker hair, I forget his name, said something to the affect of, ‘Well, if you’re a competitive player you’ll turn down settings and close programs for the lowest latency and casual players won’t notice the extra latency/ benefit from the lower latency.’ As if there’s no one in between, who sweat it out during the latest COD release and enjoy RPGs in the summer.
The main issue is, as of yet, there’s no way to objectively measure user experience with repeatable results, while ensuring the exclusion of confirmation bias and user error. The only thing we can agree on is higher framerates for gaming and everything else is lost to subjective experience if it can’t fit into bar charts. You’ll notice most tech channels only recommend what you ‘need’ to reach the typical framerates, at a given resolution, relative to the capability of a GPU. Because of this I’ve see posts online from goofballs with specs like: r5 5600G, 16GB RAM, 4090; Asking if they should upgrade the CPU and memory after upgrading to a 4090 since they only play games at 4k. Even better yet many of the comments mindlessly state that it’s not worth it because there’s little to no FPS to be gained. Not, "you idiot, you've just burned at least $1600 on a GPU. What's an extra $200 going to hurt?" or "If you can afford a 4090 to day, why did you put it in a $500 budget when it was new?"
What I find ridiculous is how there’s only a vocal minority able to square this circle and notice that, in the US market, gaming PCs over a $1000, let alone a single component, are existing the “all you need” territory and are entering a compromise reduction connoisseur domain. You either get the click bait “console killer” or the >$5000 envy builds. Very few are willing to stick their neck out, at least in the techtube sphere, and draw a line and say a system with 6 cores, 16GB RAM, on a $100 motherboard isn’t good value at $2000, you’re being a cheap ass not frugal, or at worst scammed. If you’re forced to use a USB splitter on your brand new $1800 desktop, you got played.
Let’s be honest, we all got 32GB of RAM just for the Task Manager.
yep
Nope, I got 4 sticks in 32 GB (4x8) because I plan to get a 5900x and a 3080 Strix or Tuf (or a 3080 TI since January is next month). Reason? 4 sticks instead of 2 sticks will give you increased performance on Ryzen 5000 series.
@@BlazeNarutoShippuden why not get 64?

A 16 vs 32 comparison for tarkov would have been cool to see how big of an effect a ram shortage of 600mb has on performance
We have to keep in mind that the operating system and any other background-running tasks have to use some of that ram, so the difference is more than 600mb.
Your humor and ways of going about things is so entertaining and funny. I really appreciate your wholesome personality
Use case for 32 gigs of RAM: Play a game while streaming, monitor the stream on a second monitor, have Chrome open on a third monitor... Then edit the stream afterward to post to RUclips while watching RUclips and using Chrome.
Really, just using Chrome can need more than 16 gigs sometimes.
My son is usually watching RUclips on Chrome (with about 40 tabs open, including a few Reddit threads with too many memes), while playing a game like Civ 6 or Hearts of Iron 4. I have to avert my eyes.
Exactly. If you use your computer for anything else and don't want to close everything before playing a game, 32 is better. Though I still do it with 16. Having SSDs also hides a lot of the memory swapping in background.

I agree, I went for 32 GB in my system because I'll watch a stream or netflix on my second monitor in Chrome while playing like Runescape or FFXIV or World of Warcraft.

You're assuming your running game is the only thing hogging RAM. Your system and other background apps need some breathing space too!
Try leaving a few Chrome tabs open and launching Halflife Alyx or Star Citizen at the same time, we'll see :) or maybe you like to close everything you multitask on everytime you start a game?
32GB is the current sweetspot between cramped and over-futureproof, especially if you're building a new system, we're upgrading later would leave you with 2x8 + 2x?? In your 4 slots (4x8 would be wasted potential at this point in time)

I just recently rebuilt my system a few months ago, I had the extra capitol so I threw 32 gigs into it. Not because I thought I would need it now, but that I would eventually in the future. And since ram is cheap right now I figured it would make sense to do it while I was already building and spending money anyway.
I have a gaming PC I built back in 2012 with 16 gb ram and a 3770k. I found that in recent months, I would start to run out of memory frequently with all of my apps open and would even sometimes get crashes. A big culprit was Chrome memory hogging when I had alot of tabs open and/or having the app running for too long. Only gaming I really do is WoW and old stuff.
To my surprise, I found that despite it being ancient, the motherboard is able to support up to 32 gb ram so I spent $100 on a kit. The thing runs amazing now, like new. I think that this upgrade will give me a number more years out of the computer. Happy about my purchase.

It might use above 16gb but I would like to see under what scenario it does.
Not saying that you won't benefit from having 32 or more, just want to know what would use this much ram. Is 16 not enough to load all of the necessary textures on a wide view at a distance?
@@FallenPasha Thought I would just comment here.
I have a 2080ti SLI & i9 9900k OC 5GHz. I have all the settings maxed out and I would almost constantly crash whenever I landed at NY Airport. I also noticed I had micro stutters even when flying around casually. I switched my 16gb 3600 Ram to a 32gb 3000mhz and there is no crashing at all.
With the 16GB I used about 90-95% ram every time playing MSFS. Now with the 32GB I use about 20Gb. I am sure if I lowered the settings I could run the game smoothy with 16GB but instead I just upgraded the RAM. Definitely worth spending that extra money to futherproof your setup.
@@FallenPasha Whenever you load up cities with accurate photogrammetry, the RAM usage can exceed 16GB. Try loading Paris or New York and you'll see that you won't be able to play MSFS while a chrome browser is open.

If all you are going to do is play one game and run nothing else, yes 32GB of ram is a little overkill. But if you plan on watching video on another monitor or run other programs you really do want 32GB.
I use 2GB RAM for gaming and especially watching RUclips videos including Dawid Does Tech Stuff's videos.
My condolences...
2GB in my very old laptop as well btw, horrible experience 😜😉
2GB is impressive. My old laptop has 8GB and I occasionally throttle at the limit just with my normal tab-junkie-heavy Chromium-usage.
My main rig which is kind of old, too, has 16GB and I've only filled that up only a couple times and only when having an unreasonable amount of things open.
I'd still go for 32GB in my next rig.
Matt Savage my main has 64GB but I use it for work as well so not only gaming.
But the Intel i3-370M in my old laptop with the 2GB 1066MHz RAM and a 5.400rpm spinning rust drive? ... yeah, absolute garbage 😩 It still does RUclips btw ... at 720p and buffering alot 🤣😂
@@MrJohnLongbow I would say you could upgrade that but with the CPU I'm not sure if it's even worth it, at least your desktop is nice and overkill
@jim rose Idk how he does it but ram and HDD could be swapped, but like, what's the point
I feel so sorry for you with everyone saying “Thiddy Twwoooo Gigabytes” : ((( 😂
Finally someone bench marking with Tarkov..! If you have done any other test on Tarkov Im sure a lot of ppl would love to see it, or maybe its just me lol
I know I am late to this but I have managed to get about 31-32gb of ram usage on rFactor2. I haven't touched allocation or anything but it was a 45 car race on the Nürburgring full. Pretty much maxed settings
It's inevitable in my opinion: I like playing while doing something else in the background
@@ghostedsuicide Hi, I'm someone who plays games and doesn't do other things in the background. I prefer to enjoy the game and not be distracted.
A caveat is that when I need info, I'll look it up on my phone or laptop, so I understand why multiple displays are useful. They just aren't what I use as they take away from my immersion in the game.
Having recently finished Subnautica, having another screen showing materials needed really helps.
Agreed. Im upgrading my ram tomorrow to 32gb. I dont see a big performance gaming difference but when I am also browsing and opening other clients or downloading other programs then I start noticing things. Like you said "Its inevitable"
@@FallenPasha no music? what games are you playing?
I remember upgrading to 2GB Ram around 2005, some friends said no need for that much when 1gbwas recommended for very few games, then out came battlefield 2142 with 1500GB for recommended
1500GB?? Crazy!
Flight Microsoft simulator says yes lmao when browsing in the background.
I have 32 gigs of ram. I also have an 8 core cpu. Most games, on their own, don't fully use 32 gigs of ram. It's a different story when you are streaming, have multiple browser tabs and other apps open at the same time. Also, i regularly use a decompression/installer system that normally uses well over 20 gigs of ram. The more ram and cpu threads you have, the faster it works. Also i do audio work. I can sometimes have huge projects open. Ie an hours worth of samples and insturments. That almost maxes out my ram and hammers my cpu usage during playback.
as an owner of 64GB ram in his PC...i'm compensating for everything :(
use prime cache to cache game files to speed up game loading. In assassin creed odyssey I saw a huge difference by allocating 15gb for caching.
That's a very interesting suggestion. A great way to use the extra RAM you have sitting around.
Lol it is so funny to see how much you still reply to comments that most quality RUclipsrs like you would ignore 😂
Seen the i7 2600k CPU in the intro made me feel better about buying the same doing my first computer build as learning about hardware making a purchasing decision based on platform build upon best BANG for Buck older but relevant to current day system.
Started off with a ASUS P8Z68 Gen-3ProV that led me to choose best 1155socket out there to overclock being the i7 2600K i have seen in the intro :D - my choice of GPU in current market landed me on EVGA GeForce 960 4GB as most suitable price/performance value & topping it off with 4x8GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance just to make sure i dont bottleneck anything trying to push out best overclock performance. Working on Cooling and PSU now. SO far got the AIO Coolmaster for CPU & next spare money i get will finish off with another 4fans I havent researched yet, but doing the first build is more fun then I thought after understanding hardware specs.
PS* I can build a racecar engine faster then assemble a working PC probably ahaha but... its about to change
*PSS: Reconsidering going 4x8GB RAM (32gb) on my System might be WAY OVERKILL as Im learning now benchmark RAM utilizations for options. I mainly play World of Warcraft, Path of Exile, Diablo 3, would love to play GTA5 & Mafia/Max Payne type titles - would i need 16gb or 32for later said games?

Dawid: "Finally a game that uses more than 16 gigs of ram!"
Star Citizen: "Am I a joke to you?"
For real man
Hahah yeah. My Ram monitor tells me 16gb is 90% in SC 😦
@@CollyDoo I just made the switch to 32gb of ram from 16. Makes a WORLD of difference. Stuttering is almost gone :) Definitely recommend it for the time being.
I'll leave this here: MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2020
he says it at the end of the video
He mentions that as well. Doesn't change the fact that the average gamer is absolutely ok with 16 gb
Exactly, It's using an average of 22,5 GB of RAM overflying Tokyo or NY
@@cehaem2 Yes, BUT only at the very end of the video. Throughout the video I'd say the average viewer would be under the impression that 16GB is WAAAY enough, when in fact it actually is not. That's the issue. The video is still great and I agree that most people don't need more than 16GB - no doubt about it.
@@galmubi5406 Yes, for the average gamer 16 gigs is more than enough.
0:11 amazing PC build
I literally watched this hoping you would test EFT, and i gotta say... I think im gunna go with 32 lol
Im glad you mentioned Minecraft. I play RLCraft with extra shaders and noticed an improvement with 32 gigs of cheap Ram I picked up a few moths ago.
*I'm using 32GB of RAM but only because I built My PC for Video Editing. But I don't think I notice it, lol*
@@onionwarlock7407 Already have a Great CPU. But having more Ram isn't just for gaming unless you ONLY game. I don't ONLY game, I'm also a content creator so I shoot in HI-Res almost all the time.
@@onionwarlock7407 no no it's fine I had built my First PC in July of 2020 but I opted for 32GB because 16 isn't enough and thanks for watching my channel.
David, great video
I do have a few observations/questions.
First is the benchmark SW monitoring the game or the system usage?
If it is monitoring only the game then a sanitized Win10 by itself will eat 4-7Gb so you are quickly touching 16Gb and then you are paging and if you are paging you start eating more RAM later for processing.
Different games use the RAM differently some will need a lot of RAM for processing like on-line game other will just pass the bits to the GPU and it is it that will need RAM to render to the screen.
Finally I was so waiting for you to dive into the speed difference 3000, 3200, 4000 MHz what exactly does it 'give' the user? Are we talking 10% visible usable increase or 5% or 20%? Basically does it matter?
If you are processing super fast shipping to the RAM super fast and sending the bits to your GPU you are just bugging down your GPU, No????
Cheers,
a.
Also IMPORTANT thing is that, Windows 10 use 3-4GB in every moment because of that You don't have 16 GB, for game you have like 12GB and sometimes you ask yourself why You have problems with rendering distance in some games, its just because of that. You don't need 32, You can use like 24GB and that is good..
Thank you for the "Strobe effect" warning. I have epilepsy and that shit gives me seizures... A LOT (if not the majority) of people don't put that in their videos (taking about the warning). Subscribed!!
For you Tarkov example, it using 14gb does in fact mean it would max out a 16gb kit. A game using 8gb will leave you with maybe 4-5 gb free, not 8gb free. Not including any applications you might have open.
Nobody ever seems to consider that Windows uses a lot of ram. If you have 16gb, windows is using 3-4gb at any given moment. It scales with how much you have.
8gb = windows uses 2gb.
32gb = windows uses 4-6gb.
I have a 32gb machine, and I run diskeeper, to use the extra ram as cache for the mechanical hdd and for a short buffer for writes.
I have alot of shortcomings so I will take you advice, and get more ram for my pc. So 32gb of ram is what I need to help with that even if it doesn't help with the fps in games that much. Thanks for the advice, as any life advice is good.
Benchmarks aren't everything most people have something in the background running like discoard and browser . Going from 16 gb to 32gb in the real world performance it fell more Snaper. Just keep it in mind benchmarks aren't everything this is not the usual use of pc while gaming.
If you're offended by this I'm sorry.
Edit: word
i usually keep 40 pornhub tabs open while i game
exactly i run 32 gigs on my system and my son runs 16 gigs and he says my system is more responsive doing the same things he does on his pc while playing games
@@shinukage8573 with my system there was a bit of a difference going from 2x8GB dual channel to 4x8GB dual channel. I was honestly not expecting any improvement on the game I was playing,I bought more to be reatdy for Microsoft flight sim 2020,but there was quite an improvement appearently due to it now running in Dual Rank mode for each channel.
You don't need to apologise for people potentially being offended by you stating your opinion. Anyone who thinks you aren't allowed to think for yourself should be apologising to you, not the other way around.
@@kylematlock7499 Dual-rank can make a big difference in some software, though it's very variable (some games love memory rank interleaving, some don't care about it at all). A lot of people with 16GB could benefit from going up to 32GB for this reason.
Got 64GB a few weeks ago... now the rest of the PC

I need 32gb because I run 3 screens and many programs at once if I were simply gaming I wouldn't need it but if you have a multi-screen setup it helps a lot.
I use Edge (based on Chromium) as my main web browser, so I plan to get 64GB in my next build.

the 32 gigs of RAM (or the max afforded) are a good way of time-proofing a PC.
I use the memory and the 3tb for my game mods for my sims 4 gaming and screen shots and photo editing
Considering your PC is doing background tasks while you play games yes... Opening up mod organizer 2, steam, and Firefox web browser is 8 gigs of RAM on laptop
