I DO NOT LOVE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!!
    Goals however?! YES PLEASE!
This is how much I love goals: I create a template for myself that I do every year, and sell it here heyshayla.com/shop GOALS2024 gives you 50% off for the year of 2024!
I wanted my wedding anniversary to be 1/2 way through the year so we could review our goals 1/2 way through the year!
But I remember last year having a SUPER hard time coming up with my goals because Motherhood felt like it was taking over my life (because it was... by choice). And I wasn't sure what that meant for making money, for growing my biz, for a lot of things.
So this year I've realized these are not the years of rapid growth (for me) they are years of being present with my family. The years of growth will come and they will be great, but for the moment, these are my priorities.
If I maintain what I'm doing that will be major winning. If I can also "trim the fat" on what I'm doing that would be incredible.
So my 2024 WORD(s) for my goals are: Minimize and Simplify.
Minimize Spending, Simplify my STUFF (Decluttering guide I follow here: heyshayla.com/declutteringguide) and Minimize my busy work.
More clarity, more presence, more ENJOYING.
Please comment with what your word (AND WHY) is on this video so I can hear from you! If it's not clear, I love goals, and I love hearing other people's just as much!

    Twins 👯‍♀️
Two days ago I decided that I want to have indoor plants. Yesterday a friend was over and told me how she uses these globe things to water them and I HAD IT IN MY AMAZON CART IN .2 SECONDS 🤣. Well, I’m happy to report that I did not check out and I saved myself from spending $20+ unnecessary $$$.
    We can do it. 🎉🎉
    My phrase is “mindful spending.”

My word for 2024 is abide. I want to make my home a place where God's spirit can abide. Make it clean and tidy and also be less frustrated with my kids and yell less😅. I also want to abide better myself by putting my phone away and removing distractions so that I can abide and be more present with my kids.

My word this year is peace. I want to find peace. Within myself, within my family, within my community. Last year was a complete whirlwind. I became a mother to our first child 2 months after I became a widow. The lowest of lows fallowed by the highest of highs and ALL of the firsts were bittersweet rather than just purely joyful as they should have been. So my goal is to find peace this year. Settle into life with my daughter and find a peaceful routine for the two of us 😊

I do not normally comment on RUclips videos, but this one is something that I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. My word/mantra for 2024 is “live purposefully.”
I want to really be more present with friends and family and not feel like the days and months just passed me by. A bit of this comes from too much time on the phone, and not thinking critically about how they spend my days. I feel like as a stay at home mom and homemaker, it’s easy to just kind of sit in the sidelines of your own life sometimes.
A goal that I have for the year is to learn ASL. Something that I’ve wanted to do for years and only even more so once I started doing signs with baby.

Relationship & Unity. I am a mom of 4 (so far) BUT I myself am an only child. I am really seeing a desire come up in me to intentionally teach my children how to listen to each other, to pay attention to what each other are feeling/needing & to encourage them to appreciate each other. This has been a HUGE realization this past year as my 3 year old and 1.5 year old have been interacting more, and because the 10 year old hasn't quite learned how to listen and respect the 3 year old as a full person with their own ideas. I really struggle with identifying with people and stepping into their needs to help them, so these two words help me focus in on wanting to build relationships AND to create unity: Not just hang out and talk with someone and then forget to text them/pray for them/reach out to help them later. In my family unit this is so important to me because I want my kids to be friends with their siblings for a long time and to excersize those relational muscles while they're in the home so it's a well developed skill as they get older and move out into the world.

    Growth!
Postpartum depression kicked my butt last year. I ran away from many relationships. Some friends stuck with me through it all. Some other couldn’t understand. I want to grow internally and love myself again. I love my two kids dearly. I want to grow in qualities that will help them feel loved by me: patience, kindness, self-control. I want to grow better habits. I have all those things outlined in my planner already!

My phrase is shut up. I really don’t need to vocalise everything, I really don’t need to have an opinion about everything, i really don’t need to give advice where it’s not wanted, I don’t need to sound like a broken record. I can’t control or fix something or someone. Done with over sharing and feeling overwhelmed by it later. Working on outer silence in order to quieten what’s going on inside.

My word of the year is joy! I can be super restrictive, hard on myself, and full of shame when I don’t do things right. Instead, I want to focus on the things that bring me joy, even if they’re hard. Finding joy in taking care of my family, being outside, and everything I can. Making decisions that help me experience that joy instead of feeling ashamed of what I did or didn’t do.
I think it’s all about living in abundance and doing hard things with joy for me this year!

Hey Shayla! I rarely comment but I loved this. My word(s) are “give grace”. I found myself criticizing my husband a lot. It was super demotivating for him, and now I see that. He responds so well to positivity and I had forgotten that when we had our baby. I’m already seeing that by being positive it’s having the exact effect that I wanted - he’s more present, more helpful, and more motivated to engage with me and the house. Love you Shayla!

I’m four minutes into this video and I’m literally crying. It hits home so much and your content is SOOO relatable. I’m saving to watch and rewatch when I don’t have sweet little voices yelling “mommy” “mommy” from the Livingroom, and one crying from his bed, and the other waiting at the gym to be picked up from basketball practice. I need this! Thank you for bringing it, and for being real!!! I’m thinking I’m going to sign up for therapy sessions as well, and I know my husband will thank you later Shayla!!! Happy New year and I can’t wait to see your goals and dreams come to fruition!

Word of the year IS A GAME CHANGER! Mine this year is Indulge… as I can be pretty miserable because I have to diet and work out and do housework and go to the park blah blah blah… this year I’ve decided I will indulge myself into these things or into rest and eat cake if that feels better in the moment.

My word for 2024 is Repair - do the work to make what I have even better. Notice damage/wear/imperfections in relationships, habits, clothes, vehicles, etc… and fix them up. Invest time and energy into good choices I have already made and do the work to follow through with those intentions. Look at what I need to do to heal my postpartum body. No giving up on treasures.

My word is *enchanted* - tame my love affair with productivity and efficiency so I can connect more, be more flexible and whimsical like my younger self, and put myself in environments and situations where wonder happens more. Cheers to a great year! P.S. save more when I can’t make much more is an empowering idea!

    Not sure yet about 2024,
But in 2023 my goal/mantra was a line from the book Going On A Bear Hunt: "We can't go over it, we can't go under it, uh oh, we have to go through it!" I had a really difficult pregnancy with hyperemesis and a lot of anxiety about whether the baby was okay, anxiety about having a repeat C-section, and then a bunch of postpartum complications and I constantly felt overwhelmed by trying to take care of my family when I felt like I couldn't get out of bed. It was hard but weirdly freeing to realize that I even when I doubted myself, I had to do hard things because I didn't have a choice, not doing them wasn't an option. Now I can look back and realize that I did all of them and we made it.

This is a great idea! My word is learning. I want to read more books as well as get my kids out of the house to learn a variety of different things. I need to learn better techniques for handling things like toddler tantrums but I also want to learn new skills like sourdough. I also really want to focus on putting my phone down and turning the tv off and just focus on teaching my boys whatever it is that they’re interested in.

Our word this year is 'quality'. We spent most of 2023 having a baby and getting our finances where we wanted them. We didn't buy a lot of stuff. So this year, we have all the upgrades we want to make listed out on our budget (ex: buying half a cow to have meat in our freezer, farm eggs, a new Dutch Oven for me to cook in). We have the next 6 months planned out, and we are going to be super intentional with buying *quality* items. We also hate having loads of stuff.

My word for 2024 is contentment. We had our first child in 2023, so I quit my full time job and moved into a PRN role. The change what huge and impacted me in a more negative way than I would have liked. This year, I want to slow down and stop trying to make everything perfect and be content with where I am and what I have. We are also looking for a house this year, which is a huge stressor in this market! I want to focus on being content with the homes that are within our purchase budget instead of yearning for bigger and better.

My word is “feel”. Since I was a child I have struggled with chronic overeating (specifically sweets) to bury my emotions and it has gotten to the point where I have been obese for the majority of my adult life and I feel off/sick most days. I want to the be the best mother I can be to my son and live a long life so I know something has to change in how I live my day to day life. I overeat to avoid my emotions, so this year I am going to accept and let myself feel and express all the emotions that are coming up, even the uncomfortable ones. This is a long term weight loss plan in replacement of the short term yo-yo dieting I used to do. I am hoping that being proactive with my frustration and anger will also make me more patient when dealing with a strong-willed toddler. Thanks for this video ❤

ALSO! Reflect. Oh my god. I sat down and journaled yesterday about this past year. My thought process was “wow, things have fallen so off track and I need to get them back in order”. Then I reflected on all the things that happened this year. We joined the Y and I’m in the best shape of my life, I started a women’s group to discuss deeper things (like this!), I made 2 new mom friends and introduced them to each other and now we hang out and meet up at the Y a couple times a week. Like, sure I’m not baking bread twice a week these days, but that’s cause I’m so busy with other things! This would’ve just passed me by if I hadn’t reflected. I’d have felt defeated and ashamed rather than as proud as I do!

My words are peace and pace. Ever since I got married in 2019, my husband and I have had so many "irons in the fire". This year, we are pacing ourselves. Peace is my other word. My family of origin have been nothing but drama and stress since I got married (both of my parents have very high narcissistic characteristics) . This year we had to put up some hard boundaries since I'm pregnant with baby #2 and they make me crazy when I'm pregnant and newly postpartum. I guess another word for the year would be space. I'm finally giving myself the space to be the wife and mother God has called me to be, without worrying about what my parents think of me. It's been hard, but I have to protect the family I am creating.

Our word for 2023, “declutter”- my house, my yard, my mind by journaling and spending time with God, my body and mind (by doing 75 hard challenge), my phone, (deleting apps I don’t use), and subscriptions, and finances (reducing areas that are not needed)
Tip: for cleaning, use dr browners, you can use it for everything.
For toothpaste: just use coconut oil mixed with organic baking soda.
( that’s how I decluttered all products in my house)

My word this year is connect. I spent a lot of 2023 checked out because of depression and I really want to check back in. I want to connect with my son more and my husband. We spend all this time together but we aren’t very connected and I want to change that this year. I also want to focus on connecting with some of our extended family that haven’t met my son yet. 2024 is a relationship building/maintaining/repairing year for me.

I have two: Calm, and Self. I'm newly a mum of two, and before I got pregnant I started to find myself again. It's also been very difficult transitioning to two. I want to be calm for my family, bring a feeling of calm and tranquility to the home for them, but I also don't want to leave to as long before I try to remember who I am again. I want to make sure I take time for myself this year, because I think it would be very easy to get lost in motherhood again

I think my word is “organize”. My partner and I have discussed the areas of our daily life that cause us the most stress and are trying to come up with systems to better manage them (think meal planning, toy rotation, getting out the door). I’m hoping we’ll have a new baby by next year and I’d really like to have these systems established so we have a place to return to after the chaos of a newborn subsides.

You live in Minnesota, yeah? Go to the Woodbury garage sales second weekend of May every year. That's wear I got my entire collection of disney VHS tapes. I own almost every disney movie from before 2005. Get a VHA player at a pawn shop or the garage sales. Never have to pay for disney subscription again. Most kids will just watch the same movie over and over again anyways.

    I’m entirely pinching this from
One of your fab followers but also ‘abide’ for wfty. Heard Ruth Naomi Floyd do a talk on this last year and I can’t get it out of my head. I’ve been making a podcast helping people get into the Bible (The Bible OverBrew - forgive the plug but if I was reading this comment I’d wanna know!) and it has been transforming my relationship with God more than I had dared believe - learning afresh how much God wants to abide with ME and how GOOD it is to abide with him is something I hope to hold onto in what may well be a tumultuous year… also that our home is a place my husband and our lodgers want to abide and that there is a deeper sense of connection and reflection through 2024. Thanks for the vid.

I've been stumped on new years goals because I have no idea what to expect from this year going into motherhood and I don't want to set any expectations that end up being impossible or hinder me from prioritizing whatever this family ends up needing. I'm now so excited to focus on experiences and relationships because no matter what happens, those will be in the picture in some capacity 😊😊

I've got similar financial goals this year. Im going to try buying our food only in bulk, from Costco and Azure Standard. You can look up videos on what Azure is (a lot of crunchy and homesteading moms utilize it) but i love it for all the organic options and from-scratch options. I hate meal planning but i keep all my staples on hand and rotate the same old meals. This eliminates runs to target or cub for one-off ingredients.
Also my word is PLAY. Ive gotten too much into mom-mode that I've forgotten my whimsical, creative self. I think i will enjoy playing with my kids more if i tap back into the kid in myself.

2024 is Potential - 2023 was Potency. I dont know if i have a thing for P words..
I would like to become more aware of my own potential (skills, competence, etc) and achieve in that space.
I use the wheel of life model to help break down my priorities into chunks, then i use every season to work on three of them, always with the focus of my word of the year.
Using menstrual awarness, lunar calendar, and other seasonal anchors has helped to ground me and use the energy I have available in a really intentional way.
I wish you good luck in your new year.

  • @amysingh4

My word for 2024 is simplify, but there’s a whole thought process behind it. We want to have another baby, but I don’t want to be in survival mode for all the little years; I want to enjoy motherhood, and to do that I need to make the work of motherhood sustainable for myself. To do that, I need to simplify basically every area of my life (routines, to do list, home, etc) so I have the margin to enjoy these challenging but precious years with tiny kids. I have specific goals for different areas I want to simplify and what benchmarks I’m hoping to hit before we have baby #2.

Love this video and your words/intention for 2024.
Mine is ‘Growth’. My daughter is turning 3 in a few months and I finally feel like I have time and space for growth so I’m going for it before I plan to add another one to the family and start again lol.
I’ll ask my self questions like:
    - will this thing help me grow?
    - will this help someone else grow?
    - will my wealth or knowledge grow?
    - will my network/village grow?
    - how can I find growth in this?

I have the answer to your slippy mat! I can’t remember what the stuff is called, maybe a type of drawer liner, but it’s a kind of webbing you can put under mats (or anything) to stop them slipping. We used it for EVERYTHING when I used to work at sea and now I use it in our camper 😊

Hey Shayla, I love doing word of the year and have been doing it since 2017.This years word I really struggled with it because last year ( still can't believe im saying that) I had my first baby and my word was impermanence, I knew going into motherhood there would be lots of change and i wanted a word that would allow me to be open to the constant change of newborn days. Anyways! I heard another content create share their word of the year in early december and when i heard it I knew it was meant to also be my word of the year too. Which is Create! create has so many ways to be implemented. I want to create memories with my daughters and husband. I want to create with my hand, create habits and create abundance with my finances. Anyways thank you for your authentic content I really enjoy your realness.

As I was working on goal setting for just the first quarter or 2024, the word that kept coming to mind was “intentional.” The majority of 2023 was my first as a parent, and a lot of it was just figuring things out as we went. This year, I’m trying to get back some sense of my pre-mom self. I’m reading “Getting Things Done,” “Fair Play,” and “Real Self-Care” all with the idea that it will help me be more intentional about how I’m spending my time, be able to set priorities more easily, and find time for things I enjoy.

I'm a stay at home mom, but my husband is super stressed holding down the economic fort - so my goal for 2024 is to start earning from home. I'm hoping to write articles and books about my various interests. I'm starting really late in the game because I have a toddler in the middle of terrible 2's and a 7 month old; it's going to be hard... but I've got to try if I want to be home for my kids.

I contribute to my savings every day. I have 3 separate bank accounts, 1 for bills, the other for living expenses, and a savings account. At the end of every day I round my living expenses account to the nearest 0 or 5. I pretend that my savings account is an old fashioned piggy bank and I send that change over there. It has helped me save so much more each month. Some days it could be $4.99, and other days it might only be 18 cents... but it all goes to me. It helps slowly drain my usable cash so I don't spend too much because I've stashed it in savings. Try it!!
I'm actually thinking about opening another account and just strictly putting that change in there for my son.

Loved this video and totally needed it. I had already settled on potentially doing monthly goals! My partner and I are doing no refined sugar this month and next month I want to try to make all our own bread rather than buying it. As for my word, not sure yet but simplify and minimize definitely landed with me as much as I hate to copy. Over the Christmas break I had a bit of a break down (12weeks pp so things are rough some days lol) and tossed a bunch of stuff on marketplace for free. I HATE clutter too. And I spend too much on nonsense we don't use thinking it was going to make our lives easier lol.
Not sure if it's helpful but something my partner and I did for groceries was plan our meals on Sunday for the week. We do a meal service 3 days a week and used to do Pizza every Friday (before dairy was too much while breastfeeding) so we really only needed to plan 3 meals; but have also done it without the meal service. But then we'd buy all the ingredients for those recipes! We'd reuse receipes week after week until we got sick of them and then we'd switch them out but we saved so much money and honestly time. It's a pain to do it every Sunday but it's better than coming home from work at 5pm and being like what's for dinner and then having to scramble or just eat like a PB sandwich. Something to consider if it fits your life! Disclaimer* I'm new to this motherhood thing so I don't know if this would work well once our baby is eating solids and such but it works for us now!

Shayla, get out of my head! I swear you always say what I've been thinking.
My word for this year is purposeful. I want to be purposeful in my actions this year! I'm doing a year off social media (insta, FB - didn't have tt or x). I'm also doing every other month, no-buys, to make myself be more thoughtful about my purchases.

Also not one for new year's resolution but I started water colour painting with my toddler. It's quality time together and it's rather meditative. It's quiet and calm and I learn a new skill. Loving it. Decluttering is constant work in progress and it gets better with practice.
HAHA! Regarding that rug that slides around, mayyybe this mindset helps. For me, if it adds value to your life (one less annoyance), I'd get it but the old one gets donated. One in one out to maintain inventory 😄
Never thought of word of the year but I think..mind would be..COMPASSION ; It's hard parenting a strong willed child respectfully and just because she seems more able in a lot of things, her 3 year old brain is still underdeveloped. When I have compassion, I am more patient. I find myself expecting more and being less patient than when she was younger when I feel like she is very very young but she STILL is very very young. I tend to disconnect when I find her whining, annoying but 100% of the time, she is just needing connection.
Wishing you and your family a very happy and blessed New Year, Shayla!

My words of the year are opposites which is strange but works specifically for me. They are: Deliberate (with home, finances, kids, well-being) and Contrary (with relationships, with myself, and spirituality)
Deliberate: Be more intentional/specific/succinct with my home/clutter, spending, routine that I know works best for my physical and emotional well-being. Deliberate with my kids activities and the time we spend together.
Contrary: Do the opposite of what I’ve learned to do from trauma 😂 I’ve been a huge bully to myself, i self-isolate, tamper my true personality due to insecurity/fear, and retreat. I want to take more risks in my relationships (being seen more for who I am) so it means I need to do the opposite of what I am doing. Also with creativity I want to do the opposite of what I usually do which is take it too seriously that I stop enjoying it. Just let it be playful, fun, more light hearted.
Love minimize and simplify! Would love to see you declutter and share your experience with that. Start with the non-emotional stuff (aka not the kids stuff).

All so true! I think my word for 2024 would be to LIVE, just be in the moment wherever I am (by myself, with my partner, as a mum, at work). We have been living a bit more in the moment for maybe the past 6 weeks and its been nice. It also come with 'going with the flow' and 'not pushing something that isn't working right now' - weirdly enough most things work out better anyway! We are also choosing to 'live' this year because we also don't want to spend to much, so there is a lot around it :) - I also have to say - we thought we wouldn't be able to live without Netflix but turns out we can! We went and bought a couple of books instead and feel so much better :D There's also a great podcast about minimizing on heyshayla :P

2024 what will you be? I’m a first time mom and I know I’m in for a major life change. I envision the sleepless nights, the uncombed hair and the rampage of a mess my small home will be. And even tho that might be my reality what I want is sunshine filled mornings with baby in my arms as I prepare breakfast, soft music playing as baby naps, I want park dates and garden walks. Sweet nights with lullabies. I want to be PRESNT, in my mind, body, and spirit. And I want to be SOFT, soft in my mind/on myself, and loved ones, soft with my day to day. And soft in my spirit so I can hear God as He speaks to me and helps me grow. I know this time will be so short. I don’t want to take it for granted so 2024 PRESNT AND SOFT

I haven't actually figured out what my year 's word is yet, but I have made a few goals to help me get to whatever it is. 😂 I deleted Facebook and Instagram off of my phone, and then Pinterest for good measure. I want to eventually choose structured time for me to be able to look at those apps on my phone or laptop each week, but I haven't figured out how that time fits into my life yet. I decided I want to read at least one book a month, I want to walk 3 days a week and do my pelvic floor therapy stretches 3 days a week. I'm trying to lose a little bit of weight and restore my core before getting pregnant again, hopefully in the next year. As part of that, I am picking a new salad recipe to make each week. I make five servings and put them into jars for my lunches for the week. I wanted to prioritize spiritual growth this year, so I picked a book of the Bible to listen to on audiobook over and over every month. I figured out how to get all my books on Kindle or audiobook (many of them from my library) so that I can read or listen when I nurse my baby instead of scrolling social media. I also want to learn how to make croissants this year, just for funsies.

I want to spend less time on my phone, but i need other things to do besides that, so stay at home moms with toddlers, what do you do to stay off your phones? Do you endlessly plan activities, sensory bins, where do you go and how often? I feel lost sometimes about how to do this motherhood thing, but i know i want our lives to be full and rich, i just dont know what to do instead.
