We treat these failures completely different! If you have a compressor failure, where it pumped its guts throughout the entire A/C system, you are going to have a lot of other parts that also need to be replaced, along with a system flush. As opposed to just a simple A/C clutch failure, where the integrity of the internals of the A/C system have not been compromised. My teacher told me to come check out your videos his name is mike at Rosedale tech and i definitely will keep watching your videos to help get a better understanding thank you
Yep im a Honda tech and we deal with these all the time. Even if the bearing wasnt bad sooner rather than later it would need a clutch and coil kit because every CRV of this gen needs one! Not necessarily because of noise but because they fail to engage the clutch
if it's like the subaru non-repairable ones(my foot!) the clutch disc gap needs re-shimmed due to wear and the rubber bushing need replaced or it wont always pull in solid and just slip chewing itself up. granted I wouldn't bother doing that on majority of them, except my own/family/friends.
I did a compressor because of the clutch last year on my '04 Envoy. You can buy a kit with everything but the tools for a decent price. As long as I was in there I did the thermostat (hadn't worked in years), fuel pressure regulator (random fuel drips), and serpentine belt and idler pullies. Turned out great!
Imagine being a kid having car problems and scanner Danner shows up to figure it out. That's the automotive equivalent of having a body you need to dispose of and the Wolf shows up.
Look for rust dust around compressor clutch as an early sign of failure. Also, grab the AC clutch center WITH ENGINE OFF and try to rotate. Center should rotate smoothly with slight drag. In some cases, clutch can be disassembled and some shims removed if clutch has wear causing it to not engage properly.
Good recommendations here. Don't do just a clutch on something like this. In my experience, the heat from the toasted bearing damages the shaft seal and the compressor will leak down the road, if it's not leaking already. As Paul recommends, replace the whole compressor. The only time I'd even consider just a clutch is if the coil opens and it just stops engaging, and only then if the clutch is even available. 98% of the time it gets a compressor. I also recommend Denso or genuine Honda only on the compressor. If you do end up needing an entire system (internal compressor failure) don't be lulled in by the low price of those kits that contain everything. Those compressors are often garbage and will fail in a year or two. Ask me how I know this. I've never had a Denso compressor fail on me after a repair. Had a couple of the cheapo ones go bad. Not fun. Same advice on starters and alternators.
Eh, even the name brand parts can be bad. I put a Denso new compressor on a Honda van last year, noisy right out of the box. Had to recover charge, remove and replace it with another one. I hardly ever do clutches only due to availability of the kits being low. But I just did a clutch only last week. Pulley bearing was noisy, was able to get a clutch kit on clearance for $30. Put it on and all is well. Better in that situation over risking a dud new compressor when knew the old oem one was perfect.
I could hear the bearing as the car started, no need to stethoscope for my ears and of course the visual of crooked pulley and debris splatter says it all.
Me too! Nick had a baby and things got put in hold for s bit. Hoping to make the trip out sometime in November or early December. That way I can hit thr mountains in Colorado and snowboard for a day or two 😀
So with checking the voltage here... The only way it could be battery or alternator related is if the voltage is dropping... Can a bad compressor make voltage fluctuating when idling?
I only mentioned testing battery voltage as a variable due to the electrical burning smell. If it wasn't charging, this would have guided me towards the noise.
@@ScannerDanner oh I see.... I'm having an issue at idle where it's fluctuating but giving it gas it's charging normal. New alt, Cleaned connectors all except starter connector,( didn't have time) but still fluctuating at idle. Was just wondering bc it seems to happen more when the ac compressor is on.

Nice audio and visual diagnostic. Looking forward to part 2!
I've seen the older CRV's blow the internals out of the side the compressor housing. Love it!!
You’re looking good, Paul. I hope your mom is doing well!

Just did an ac clutch kit. Worked great!
Thank you so much Paul for another nice video, have a nice weekend with your familiy
The sound difference is very distinctive even through the camera audio.
Awesome video Paul & Caleb ❤

hey, I seen that refrigerant loss! lol. that classifies as de-minimis loss, have to purge air from hoses. 😋

Cool topic / lesson !!
Pardon the pun . 😁
Nice 😮
Did he say this happened after the ac was repaired?
A clutch bearing failure would not be related to any previous work

No belt😂. Belt is pretty much a given on an accessory drive job. Unless it’s brand new
Remember I'm doing this for a friend's son, who doesn't have a lot of money and the belt was fine and did not need to be done at this time. Well, now it does lol
I would have taken the belt off.. if it was a close enough drive.
@@ScannerDanner I get it, BUT a $20 belt now is cheaper than a breakdown and tow bill in a couple months from now.
@@mph5896 of course
I was just gonna say replace the serpentine belt and tensioner and check the other pulleys
That was why we did the sound test
Hi
I was thinking you were going to take the belt off.. because it was such a short drive.
Oh well.. I'm sure it was old anyway
That belt drives the water pump. I definitely was not going to take it off. 🙂

I think he said the battery was new
