The Art of the Essay: Introducing the Most Supple Form of Writing (Essays, no. 1)

This is a new series of talks focused, unlike the companion series on "Books That Matter", on essays. Each talk is on an essay, some as short as 3-4 pages, others 20 pages or even more; some of great renown, others that are viewed as masterpieces of expository writing, and yet others which have somehow escaped the attention they deserve. Nearly every essay that is discussed in this series can easily be found on the internet. In this series of talks, as is the case with the one on books, I speak off the cuff, with little and usually with no preparation. The essay itself is an invitation to think on one's feet.
