Watching you pick the strings is hypnotic, and I remember that feeling back in Austin 1971 when I first saw John Prine play such huge, complete songs with two fingers, three or four notes. He played Wed thru Saturday there, and my little group saw that first show, and kept coming back. We were iron Butterfly and Beatles garage band wannabe's, and Prine was a sea-change. And two weeks later, John Hartford arrived on the AEROPLANE wings with Vassar Clements. And again, all of us spent that week in that club wondering, HOW IN THE HECK-?!! Almost twenty years and a few band lineups later, Dallas radio was playing motorcycle-crash dirge and those old friends called, "I've heard this motorcycle crash song about a girl - what is it?" Finally, we tracked down that album, and someone else called a week later, "David Wilcox is playing in Dallas next week..." We were too old and too He-Man to drool at the extraordinary capo's, but at least we had some ideas of "How-?!!" Thanks for leading us Joni fans into so many more tunings.

My favorite rarity song of yours is the misguidING song you may call "I Saw You First" about the birth of a child. I spent all those early lyrics thinking, "Why is he bragging about seeing you first, like it's some contest? What an oddly competitive set of lyrics!" which then, at the end, we realize it's NOT competitive - it's a branding-iron hot realization that the composer's laying claim to the grand moment of realization. (Or maybe the title is "I First Saw You"? I forget now.) I enjoyed those lyrics so much because it IS misleading... misguiding. You've written a tale that intentionally let me think you're viewing this event one way, but in another - it is so selfishly aware that it can ONLY apply to someone completely self-aware.

By the way, that was the summer when Willis Alan delivered his album, and soon Prine returned with Steve Goodman... then Bromberg, too. That was a pretty magical year for garage-band wannabe's...
