  • In 2005, singer-songwriter David Wilcox sold some of his prized instruments so he could take his wife and teenage son on a year-long journey across the country in a biodiesel truck pulling an Airstream trailer. One of the instruments he sold was an Olson guitar that’s taken a circuitous journey of its own.

Sir, I have hiked the Smokies a long time. I’m 63. I have a picture of my grandpa holding me by a sign to Clingmans Dome when I was just a few months of age. I own a small home on the Little River that comes out of the Smokies. I play the acoustic guitar. It does my heart good to know that sweet music from such a fine musician is coming from a Smoky Mountain tree. I will listen to you and your Olson guitar for as long as I can. I absolutely love your story. Play and sing and speak the sweet language the world needs to hear. Thank you

I could listen to him play them all day - and sing too. There is something so deeply spiritual about this guy's music. It is tapping a vein of such rich beauty it would make an angel weep with sheer joy.
Where pure emotional meets pure spirit - that is the incomparable music of David Wilcox.

@@mragunathan1627 Right? For those of us who dream of the ultimate guitar it seems counterintuitive. On the other hand, sometimes our possessions possess us and based on his last few comments it sounds like it may have been liberating to let it go. I only hope the current owner gets as much joy out of it.

Regardless of the quality of the materials and the workmanship in any instrument, the end result is only potential. Not until it gets to the hands of master does it release that potential. David Wilcox is such a master of songwriting (and playing) that the true beauty of the guitar is revealed. This chord progression and voicing in this song reminds me of a Bach chorale. Of course, I've been a David Wilcox fan for years. I'm sorry I only just found this but I'll be coming back again and again.

Brilliant musician... His story reminds me of his AMAZING song, "All The Roots Grows Deeper When It's Dry" especially given the 'Smokey' Mountains, Dry Climate with which this tree rested & matured... Just venting. Love Mr. Wilcox. I hold much respect for his talents. His old manager, Tom, is such a class act too. Wonderful humans. When I covered a couple of David's songs, "Common As The Rain" & "Rusty Old American Dream" which is off my 'Moonshiner' record. Search, Brian Allan Bode, "Moonshiner" & I do apologize for the shameful plug but it was so special to me when I heard from, Tom, and he said, David & I really like these versions. Not many take that "time" to make another feel good, even if only for a moment. That moment lasts a lifetime. Thank your for you talents & dedication, Mr. Wilcox.
    Respectfully, Brian Allan Bodë.

I've had some beautifully crafted guitars in teh past: a Doerr, Charis (with a neck just like this), Goodall and plenty of Taylors etc. Hearing this tone makes me want to cry - so responsive and beautiful. An amazing guitar is only amazing in the hands of a master musician, which David Wilcox is. That being said, after 20 years in the music business, an extremely talented musician can bring you to tears with a Wal-Mart guitar. David is the only musician that brings both together in perfect harmony.

How deeply your playing touched my heart is very hard to communicate. Let's just say as a musician as well, my soul resonated with your style, your ability, the emotional content, and how your whole being in harmony with the guitar was engaged to create a reminder that we are more than flesh and blood, political affiliations, or religious beliefs. While 'Thank-you' is appropriate, it is also inadequate. I want an Olsen now!

Oh wow! What a beautiful sparkle and projection coming out of that piece! It has a presence that nearly connects your mastoid bone to the bridge! Apparently the more note harmonics it can project from each string, the closer to the magnificent chorus of the universe you get! That spruce is now able to sing out the beauty it observed those many years, clinging to that rocky ledge and peering into the starry sky at God. Just wow, Dave! That guitar speaks love by its very essence. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I have a Breedlove Stage Dreadnought from about 5 years ago, and an old ‘63 Gibson J-50 acoustic Dreadnought.
